Love the Leon FR/CR's as well..they sound like a petrol..although I'm told, the older/noisier PD-engines are stronger and last longer..even though they sound like 90's taxis:)....
The duration either lasts depends mostly on what percentage of ultimate stress you tune them for, maintenance and how you drive it. The CR (common rail) motors can make more power/torque than the PD (unit injector) engines before failure (even though there are some pretty strong PD cars built). However its also easier (and represents a lower percentage change from stock) to add power up towards that point of failure, and the stock CR engines will produce less visible smoke for a given power figure tuned to, which leads to DIY and lower quality shops frequently setting these engines up in more powerful, but less reliable configurations in customers road cars. The PD cars are simpler and cleaner/less crammed under the engine bay, which in some cases can make them cheaper/easier to deal with, and where very low stressed from factory which was good for longevity and tolerant of abuse, all which results in a reputation of PD's as reliable, even though its certainly not true to claim PD-engines are "stronger" than their CR replacement.
