As he used to frequently say, “I love money.” He was never a liar. He was a master bullshit artist. Big difference. And that’s why he’s so lovable.
Same with Picasso who stated himself that what he painted was shit but that he would continue as long as people kept buying them for millions. You got to admire the honesty of these men
@niaj4 I think Dali was being sincere when he said "I'm too intelligent to be a good painter" and it was not an immodest statement. What he meant was that it would take great sacrifices to create truly great art, and he was too intelligent (in terms of self preservation) to do that. He probably had someone like Van Gogh in his mind when he said that.
When you put too many ideas into a painting, it's bad art. Just look at the contemporary art world, too intelligent to be good art. The superstition may also play a part.
That's bullshit though and it very much is an immodest statement. It directly implies that all great painters were less intelligent than Dali, which is obviously not true. Of course, many great artists were a bit quirky and there's nothing wrong with spouting some bs once in a while. Everyone on the internet does it after all. He was still a great painter, whether he wanted to acknowledge it or not.
I think he meant to say he wasn't actually crazy, after all, that was sort of Dalí's trademark, his public icon: "Dalí's a crazy man and that's why he paints surreal (crazy) stuff" but not really, he was in rather good health and position. There's an ideology that actual crazy and weird people tend to make the most powerful pieces that do get to people the instant they look at it, they feel the intensity and emotion put into their work, and perhaps this is what Dalí aknowledged, that he was intelligent instead, and intelligent people know how to handle their lives, people that's not normal on the other hand, they suffer it, they have trouble handling life and you can see that amplified struggle put into their work. I think that's what Dalí meant by being an "idiot", and for that reason, he could not reflect that much of an emotional presence in his work, but rather showcase the concept of surrealism. That's why he calls himself a bad painter.

A rare moment of humility. Dali is one of my favourite painters and I actually prefer his early work myself. One thing I noticed about him, he never smiled, and I don't think he laughed much either.
Dali has a very unique perspective on what it means to be good at painting Some would say that it takes knowledge, wisdom, practice, and intuition to perfect the craft. Dali says it takes a bit of stupidity. VERY different perspectives indeed.

wow...brought tears to my eyes, when he says the moment I can paint as good as velasquez, rafael, rembrant or vermeer, I can die the next week...he was so humble, yet a genius and extraordinary painter...RIP
I think you misunderstood what he meant. He didn't mean it in the way that the moment he paints a painting that is on theirs level, he can die because then he is fulfilled. What he meant was the that if he would do that, he would die, as he knew that great artists die young. He was superstitious, basicly. He was a crazy, arrogant, but none the less great man.
fascinating individual, on the right side of history so you know he wasn't mad, eccentric with the innocence of a child, brilliant with the passion of a novice.
"I'm too intelligent to be a good painter" I understand this. In the way I can identify with this, I'll tell you I make music. I think my music is terrible and for the most part it's because I have to learn so much about what I'm doing and how to do it, that it removes the feeling behind what I create. "You have to be a bit stupid to create good art". Stupid in the sense that you have to let your creations be mostly natural feelings and less focused thought. I'm almost never satisfied with my creations because they never express what I feel. This is because I spend too much time and energy finding/creating sounds I've never heard instead of creating the melodies that my heart sings. This is how I interpreted this quote. I hope it makes sense to someone.
You're not alone, buddy. I'm highly analytical, so art is my Achilles' heel. And yet I chose it as a career... For music, which is a hobby in my case, I have about 2 years of conservatory theory under my belt but the only instrument I can play is clicking notes with a mouse on a DAW. What I intend to do is to learn how to play an instrument and cover other songs, so I can get the "feeling", rather than the cold hard theory. For drawing (my main area), having limitations is liberating. Be it themes, deadlines, time limits. Keep pushing!
All due respect to you, you seem like a really nice dude, I think that’s a bunch of cop-out bullshit. I’m not going to brag on about myself, but I’ve always had an solid academic aptitude, and I’ve discovered that making “good” art requires you to develop certain sensibilities over time, it requires you to narrow down what you’re looking for in art to its critical elements and focus solely on those things; it’s a very intentional craft. Yes, it’s visceral, but it’s in equal parts an intellectual pursuit. Intelligence is never a bar to quality in art, lack of persistence is. Most people are shit for many years when they start. Just because you’re bad from a more cerebral vantage point doesn’t mean it’s your intelligence that makes you bad. Intelligent people often have a rich emotional world to pull from in the creation of their art. They only have to become well versed in expressing those emotions through a medium, like anybody else. They may need to let go of their bent toward perfection A BIT, but largely, that will help them succeed. Intelligent people have an advantage in art. Most artists are on the higher end of the IQ spectrum.

I’ve met some excellent artists. One thing I’ve noticed about them: their standard of ‘bad’ was so much higher than mine! That’s what makes them great.
Hannibal Lecter - it sure does when you dismissively day “Today?” Theres 7 billion people. The popular artists are mostly garbage. Acting like there’s only good artists in the past is a bias, for you to overcome.
@@Sprite_525 I'm not acting like that. But that the last few centuries were a time which didn't even have a little part of the number of "good" or even great artists (it's similar in literature and music) as in the past is just a fact. That's something you have to agree with.
Hannibal Lecter - how is anything you said related to what I said about ‘today’ like it was a rhetorical knockout punch against greatness existing today. Greatness is rare, yes, as in the past or the future or today. Many greats also faded away, too, since there have historically been very few means to preserve what great people created.

I love him because he was a conscious troll. He intentionally took advantage of the bullshit which solely comprises “the art world” and made himself into a multimillionaire off of it.
As he used to frequently say, “I love money.”
He was never a liar. He was a master bullshit artist. Big difference. And that’s why he’s so lovable.
Same with Picasso who stated himself that what he painted was shit but that he would continue as long as people kept buying them for millions.

Yep. I asked myself "Why not?" and clicked on it.
The superstition may also play a part.
imacg4 loool you seriously consider temporary art as intelligent art?
G So salty damn. Van Gogh didn't sell any paintings but now he's known as one of the best artists in the world. What's your problem?
He’s too intelligent to be a good painter because good painters always die too young..
Genius

I love how fearless he is. Salvador Dali is not really a bad painter but an intelligent creator that makes him a good painter.
What I most admire about him is his... humility.
his accent is so strong, you can tell he was born in catalonia. its so interesting to hear all the different accents one country has!
We have atleast 5 big accents, the Andalusian, the south accent. The Canarian, from the African islands. The catalonian/valencian, at the Mediterranean sea. Galician ones, sounds like a lot like Portuguese and then, in the north, the Basques, the speaking of the only prerroman languaje that remains in the entire continent.
Oh, and the most neutral one, the castillean, the most neutral form of Spanish in all county

wow...brought tears to my eyes, when he says the moment I can paint as good as velasquez, rafael, rembrant or vermeer, I can die the next week...he was so humble, yet a genius and extraordinary painter...RIP

"I'm too intelligent to be a good painter"
I understand this.
Keep pushing!
totally feel you bro... never get past a melody... even i dont like them next morning sometime .... so lets talk about it...
I get you man
All due respect to you, you seem like a really nice dude, I think that’s a bunch of cop-out bullshit.
@@whyistheresky "with all due respect" and "bunch of bullshit" on the same sentence, what happened to being well-versed in expressing one's emotions? Either own your footing on Mount Stupid or don't, don't go, with all due respect, yapping this demented crap on the Internet.

Interesting that the bursting out the egg thing (which many would brandish as intellectual garbage) is actually pretty reminiscent of modern memes.
I’ve met some excellent artists. One thing I’ve noticed about them: their standard of ‘bad’ was so much higher than mine! That’s what makes them great.
Excellent artists? Today? Lol. But of course here's the question how you yourself define "excellent".
@@Sprite_525 Then let's say that today there's no artist who is as great as the great artists in the past. Not even in the last few centuries.
My grandfather knew him. Rest in peace

A few years ago I was in London visiting my then partner's family. The day we were leaving we found out about a Dali exhibition going on. Had to leave his family 3 hours early so I could visit. Aw I was like a giddy child in front of the artwork I had only seen in books before. Then I turned round and in the middle of the room, surrounded by railings and rope, was one of the Mae West Lip sofas. Not a security guy in sight. Very few people in the area. I handed my camera to my partner and said take a pic jumped the rope and sat on the sofa!!! I sat for about 1.5 seconds and it felt brilliant!!! I was like a naughty schoolkid breaking the rules. He would have appreciated that I thought.
