Thank you Les for bringing this subject up, and congratulation on a great website and very good teaching. I find every place has a special way of dealing with photographing people and you are never in doubt when you ask permission and follow local laws. While on safari in Tanzania, I also learned a similar lesson from our guide, he said, "here, animals are at home and you are stepping on their boundaries, respect that and you'll get great photograph !" So even if you can't ask permission to animals, they also have their conception of privacy, and they kind of acknowledge your request by standing still, some considering you'd be a mate for lunch !

I'm not much into shooting people, but this is very insightful information. Thank you! I didn't realise they still make cameras that follow the polaroid concept of developing images on the spot. This is really good to know!

Wonderful video Les. Besides the seven tips you gave I have another one. CHECK THE LAWS OF THE COUNTRY YOU ARE IN OR ARE GOING TO. In some countries the photograph belongs to the subject, not the photographer. In others like Sudan, photography is not legal period. The photos you may see of Sudan are all taken by the Sudan government or by big companies that have big bucks and very well paid legal teems working for them and then you must have a government rep with you to take the photograph and have every image checked at a government office.

Thanks, John. Your point is very well taken and not only for portraits. In China and MANY other countries taking photos in restricted places can put you in a very uncomfortable jail. I was arrested in Egypt two weeks after Anwar Sadat was assassinated for taking a picture of a college campus after giving a lecture. Not pleasant!

Thanks a lot for that motivating video. I have always been too shy to ask foreign people. Perhaps i will give it a new try…
P.S. unfortunately the link to your blog end with an error: "Looks like you're looking for something no longer available."

You are most welcome. Best of luck with your approach. Just don't take a refusal personally and go on to the next subject. And thanks for the heads-up about the error.
