Thank you for the brillant recommendations, especially the stainless steel brush to rough up the edges.

In lieu of using the Stanley knife I've successfully used a thin burnisher in much the same way resulting in the same subtle deckle effect. If you moisten the edge before tearing this will slightly amplify the deckle effect. The moistening will also make tearing the paper much easier. Experiment with both methods to see the actual differences.

Thank you for this How-to. I love everything "vintage". Just to make sure I understand correctly: You showed it here on a piece of paper, but the deckling would be done on the print itself, right? Not deckle a paper and then glue that paper behind a print with normal edges.

Elisabeth, sorry for the delay in responding. Yes, the deckling is done on the print itself. However, I have seen some photographers adhere a 220 GSM print to a piece of heavier GSM paper (i.e. 325 GSM) or matt board and deckle that for a dimensional effect. Either way would work. Best of luck to you!

Hi Lester, how do you mount the print (to the board) after it’s already “dekled” ?

Dan: I will be doing a video on exactly that sometime soon. Stay tuned!
