His spot was funny as hell on Married with Children. The Movie Back To School Sam was a rising star and some Drunk took that from him and as and got a slap on the wrist for it.

So did Jay Leno. Johnny was the King at that time and Jay leno was King in his time. Leno did take over for Johnny not anybody could take over that show. Sam Kinison; having been a Pentecostal preacher of "fire and brimstone" starting at age 17, was surely doing the same "fire and brimstone" thing on that NBC stage that night in Burbank.
I'm 77 and miss Johnny. He was great on his show (the best of the best) His personal life was pvt as it should be for all of us. I watched Johnny when his show was black & white TV through till the end with Betty M singing till Johnny teared up. Don't smoke not being able to breath sux.
You can hear Johnny laughing in the background. He really appreciated the comedians who performed on his show. The world is less special without these two greats.
I saw him live twice. The first time I almost had to leave the venue, I was laughing so hard I could barely breathe. Really the hardest I've ever laughed about anything.
I never had the honor to see Sam live, but watched all of his stuff over the years. Like you, I've never laughed so hard in my entire life. I mean, knee slapping, vapor lock type laughing! Once I almost passed out from laughing so hard. His scream pierced your soul and left you in stitches. I can't imagine seeing his routine live....I would have died a happy man...with a smile on my face.
I saw him live twice, too. First time I was a senior in high school. The buddy I went with looked older. He disappeared and came back with four giant cups of beer. I sat there drinking beer and lmao’ing (Sam tore the place down) and felt like the king of the world. One of my best memories.
First time I saw him was in a hotel ballroom in Honolulu about 1989. The room was filled with rowdy military. His final skit, he asked a soldier about the woman who broke his heart. Then he called her on the phone...
It doesn't have to be bad - getting old. I'm 72 and embarking to move to an Asian island - which doesn't even have an ATM or a grocery shop. The people there are wonderful. I'm the only foreigner. Sorry, I won't say the name of the island.
back when he was doing his show, sure I like what he did, but now comparing his work with talk show host of resent times....... Johnny, forgive me for not recognizing the true talent you were.
That’s why he was the man for 30 years. After your local nightly news, it was this guy, even if you had to rise early or didn’t care for the night’s guests, you caught the monologue.
And not just trying to diss Trump every night with a phony contrived propaganda piece from the communist masters. The "late" shows are just not funny anymore. Like Carson was.
He's funny and pleasant, but he never gets flustered, sets up the guests for jokes, always guides the conversation towards whatever they're promoting, he gives each guest every chance to look good by making them feel at ease, and has a razor wit that he can pull out of nowhere for killer punchlines. And he does it all while making it look effortless. That's his true artform.
I never imagined Sam would break out into one of his signature comedy routines in the middle of such a slow & romantic song. Hilarious! Sam was one of a kind. He left us way too soon & too suddenly.

he was super funny for a short time, but hes comedy really went down hill the more famous he got. he burned super hot for a short time, but that brief period was enough to make him one of the all time guests.
@@mrmaxcarter2306 Had it not been for his drug and alcohol addictions, he would have stayed on top of his game. All of that substance abuse took its toll on him -- you can see it in his face and body, later on. I don't think he was very well toward the end. His massive weight gain, heart arrythmia, horseshoe kidney that very likely caused him trouble, and excesses in a lot of areas were all pulling him down. It may have been a mercy that he went out when he did -- I suspect he was in for a lot of suffering, had he lived into older age.
Sam gave me my biggest tip as a bartender. He rented the VIP room at a club I worked at in Los Angeles for his birthday party. He gave me a 2000 dollar check at the end of the night. I joked to him I better cash it first thing in the morning before he wakes up and stop payment. He said no worries buddy that check will be good. RIP ❤ I split it with cocktail waitress barback and busboy
I remember watching this when it first aired. My dad had just come home from working afternoon shift at the plant, watched this with me and about pissed himself from laughing. Sam was always our favorite comedian.
Sam could be hilarious clean or dirty just like Carlin. George used to do a comedy bit on the Tony Orlando variety show. He was equally hilarious doing a clean bit. We will never see talented people like these guys again.

Proud to say that I am old enough to appreciate both Mr. Carson and Mad Sam. I had no idea Sam was ever on Carson, for obvious reasons. Just watching this in late 2021. What a treat.

Sam died just three short years after this episode. The drunk driver who drove into Sam''s lane and hit him head on was given one year probation and 300 hours of community service. The raw talent of Sam Kinison is unique and rare. He died the day after my father did. I was in Virginia at the time. My brother got the news and shared it with all of us. The room was silent. Sam''s star exploded for 7 short years from his big break on Dangerfield's show in 1985, all the way to his death, heading to a sold out show in Laughlin, NV. RIP brother.
Sam talked to God as he was dying. or someone anyway who was talking to him from afar shall we say. He reportedly looked up and said "why now? " he paused, then said "oh alright".

You should familiarize yourself with a "Nobody" that was popular in the late 70's and very early 80's before he tragically died. His name was John Belushi and he was an accomplished comedian, actor, musician, athlete, writer, director... he could do anything. He is without question the greatest _SNL_ cast member in the history of the show. It was a devastating loss when he was found dead. We can only guess at what he may have accomplished.
The first time I saw Sam Kinison, I thought I would die laughing. His comedy was so unique and a fresh take on an old subject. It really hurt when I heard about his fatal car accident. I can't help but wonder what Sam would have said about the world today.
While I was on federal detail to California, I invited friends over & put in my Rodney Dangerfield VCR Tape to entertain everyone. I swear Sam had many of them literally falling off the sofa on the floor belly laughing. Thus, I had to run the tape back a bit so no one missed anything. God we had a damn fun evening.. thanks to Sam ❤️!
He used to come to a video store I started working at about 2 weeks after he died. We had videos of his that he autographed. It made me sad to see them.
Rickles was the king of wit and insult. Nobody will top him on that. But Kinnison will forever be the king of angry hysterics. His first album title said it all, "Louder Than Hell".
I remember watching this when it aired, and I was laughing so hard, I was in pain. Sam was one of the funniest comedians ever, and even though he's been gone for 30 years, I would love to see him perform live again. Just an amazing talent and one of the best ever.
AXL was forced to go to church, and it was also Pentecostal. Basically, his days in Church and the Church Choir made him an international star, with a voice like no other. He made enough money by the early 90s to live the rest of his life. Many people made it to the Big Stage because of their experiences' in Church.
I remember watching this and just waiting for him to let loose, and brother he didn't disappoint me. I was fortunate enough to see him about a year before he died. Sam was truly a legend.

But, there are some true Christians he just takes home because they will not obey. A Christian that "left us because he was never part of us" would likely be left alone to his own devices till he dies naturally. God does not discipline him , he judges him in the afterlife. Part of this I can defend scripturally, some is conjecture from scripture. But, I did see him one time giving a performance where he ridiculed believers for waiting 2,000 years for his return. I turned the channel. I am skeptical if even a backslidden Christian is capable of such blasphemy. I do not know. I am fully convinced that when I get to heaven there will be some there that will surprise me. But, I also believe that there will be those missing that I will be surprised at not being there. But, because of specific trespasses and things I have done and thought. How my heart can be continually dwell on evil that I know is wrong yet I do it. But, I also, believe that one can not receive the Holy Ghost and it not have affect on his person, no matter how small the portion of the Spirit is imparted.

His name is still a main neon sign in the Main Room of The Comedy Store to this day. People here still love him a lot. I guess if you mean the overly PC types here "he wouldn't play well to"... well yeah, we have those types too... but those are everywhere.... they have always been around, even when he was alive and taking the stage by storm in those days, those types were around and got offended, etc...
This generation does get a kick out of him, anytime they see a modern-day comedian, their pretty-much remnants of Sam kinison's act. Kennison change stand-up comedy to what it is. Along with Pryor & Carlin.
Back in the early 80's (before cable T.V. in my area) my sister and I rented his video and we laughed so hard I almost peed my pants. When him and John Belushi died we were really sad. I miss Johnny Carson too. I will smile all day now after watching this clip!!
You can tell that Johnny genuinely enjoys Sam. I still remember how shocked I was when I heard the news about Sam's death. To this day, I still watch his DVD collection, my favorite routine will always be the mortician one. Morbid, yet hilarious in such a sick way. Great comment, Brian. You got it. He's unique. Totally original. Most of today's comics are watered down versions of other comics. There are few truly original comics with real heavyweight cred or potential .... even Bill Burr and Chappelle are direct descendants of Carlin who came from Bruce....but Carlin's voices, faces, physicality, political theory and philosophy and language command made him unique. Joan Rivers was unique. No one ever like her since. Or before. Kinison's violent delivery, former exp as a preacher, his cadence and tone and even style of dress made him unique - wholly unique. Comics (young/new) like andrew shulz, mark normand, joe list, kellen erskine...funny all, but none of them unique. Even Erskine: he can thank Steven Wright
I don't have the brain power to imagine how wild the after party was this night. Sam, Johnny, Ed, Doc, and the band all together in a bar. Along with the two sisters.
You can tell that Johnny truly enjoyed Sam's comedic and performance value. Clearly he recognized Sam's uniqueness. Seeing people and interviews like this, will never happen again.
Sam was truly one of a kind. His humor resonated with me. He helped get me through a difficult time. And then when I heard he died, I was crushed. Sam will always be the funniest guy I ever heard. R.I.P Sam!
Johnny was not only the best host, he was also the best audience. The guest worked extra hard to please him knowing that all the people watching back home would enjoy it too. Both Carson and Dick Cavett were from Nebraska and they never lost that genuine interest in what that person in the chair was all about.

I literally cried the night my tv went out and I couldn’t watch Johnny. And I had the pleasure of meeting Sam AND Billy Idol outside the Eddie Murphy concert, got some autographs and asked him how he liked the show. He said, “I’m funnier”! He invited me to a show and then I opened a gate and let him and Billy in the EXREV black corvette out and they were on their way!
As a young Marine in the late eighties in SoCal watching Sam at the LA Improv. Bob Saget, Taylor Negron. Drank at the bar one time with James Woods. Good times.
I NEVER will forget his first TV appearance on Rodney Dangerfields HBO special, I laughed so hard I had tears streaming from my eyes. So sad the way he was taken, and like many others have said here, I would love to hear what he'd say about the world today. RIP Sammy, Johnny, and Ed. 😢❤️
Ive met Sam when he came to Cleveland in the early 80s an carried a good conversation with him showIng interest in me. I was told when I'm in LA look him up giving me his ph#. A year an half later I was in LA an called him an told me to come to Comedy Store at 11am but be precise the door will be open. Sure enough the door was open an he remembered precisely everything we talked about when we met prior. There were 3 other comedians there but none I've seen or of an they swarmed me with questions about me an my life, I felt big! At the time little did know they were looking for material!!! Now Sam K was a wonderful an warm person to be around you felt good in his presence.👍🤪Sorry to see his life end. RIP SAM✌️

The classic moments of Johnny Carson just never ever get old. I so enjoy how he just makes all of his guests feel pretty special by treating them so good while making them look good for the audience. Johnny was always so complimentary to the new comics who made their first appearance on his show. A good chunk of their fame they owe to JC...

I saw him live twice, too. First time I was a senior in high school. The buddy I went with looked older. He disappeared and came back with four giant cups of beer. I sat there drinking beer and lmao’ing (Sam tore the place down) and felt like the king of the world. One of my best memories.
First time I saw him was in a hotel ballroom in Honolulu about 1989. The room was filled with rowdy military. His final skit, he asked a soldier about the woman who broke his heart. Then he called her on the phone...
So jealous. He was the most ROFL comedian of all time. And if you get divorced, twice as funny.

That’s why he was the man for 30 years. After your local nightly news, it was this guy, even if you had to rise early or didn’t care for the night’s guests, you caught the monologue.
And not just trying to diss Trump every night with a phony contrived propaganda piece from the communist masters. The "late" shows are just not funny anymore. Like Carson was.
If I may add to 'classy and funny' a-political. He gave it to both sides and never thought for a minute it would be funny to hammer one or the other.
He's funny and pleasant, but he never gets flustered, sets up the guests for jokes, always guides the conversation towards whatever they're promoting, he gives each guest every chance to look good by making them feel at ease, and has a razor wit that he can pull out of nowhere for killer punchlines. And he does it all while making it look effortless. That's his true artform.
Besides Johnny Carson, you have to include David Letterman. Todays Late Night Talk Hosts flushed their legacy down the toilet.
I never imagined Sam would break out into one of his signature comedy routines in the middle of such a slow & romantic song. Hilarious! Sam was one of a kind. He left us way too soon & too suddenly.
I knew he was just by the way he kept smirking.
I saw it coming, even Elvis had fun w/ this song in concert.
I was expecting it from the first moment. You can read it all over his face. You can see it coming if you look closely.
As soon as he pauses, the audience knows that the screaming rant is coming and they start laughing.
I love the permanent smirk on Sam's face the entire performance. Miss him.

he was super funny for a short time, but hes comedy really went down hill the more famous he got. he burned super hot for a short time, but that brief period was enough to make him one of the all time guests.
@@mrmaxcarter2306 Had it not been for his drug and alcohol addictions, he would have stayed on top of his game. All of that substance abuse took its toll on him -- you can see it in his face and body, later on. I don't think he was very well toward the end. His massive weight gain, heart arrythmia, horseshoe kidney that very likely caused him trouble, and excesses in a lot of areas were all pulling him down. It may have been a mercy that he went out when he did -- I suspect he was in for a lot of suffering, had he lived into older age.
Sam gave me my biggest tip as a bartender. He rented the VIP room at a club I worked at in Los Angeles for his birthday party. He gave me a 2000 dollar check at the end of the night. I joked to him I better cash it first thing in the morning before he wakes up and stop payment. He said no worries buddy that check will be good. RIP ❤

I remember watching this when it first aired. My dad had just come home from working afternoon shift at the plant, watched this with me and about pissed himself from laughing. Sam was always our favorite comedian.

Lenny Bruce was a pioneer
You should familiarize yourself with a "Nobody" that was popular in the late 70's and very early 80's before he tragically died. His name was John Belushi and he was an accomplished comedian, actor, musician, athlete, writer, director... he could do anything. He is without question the greatest _SNL_ cast member in the history of the show.
It was a devastating loss when he was found dead. We can only guess at what he may have accomplished.
He had a Very strong voice. The fact that he was able to scream That Much and still sing that smooth is a clear skill that he worked hard on.
He really did have a beautiful singing voice. It was also funny AF, however nowadays people would be too woke and sensitive to appreciate it
The first time I saw Sam Kinison, I thought I would die laughing. His comedy was so unique and a fresh take on an old subject.
It really hurt when I heard about his fatal car accident. I can't help but wonder what Sam would have said about the world today.
While I was on federal detail to California, I invited friends over & put in my Rodney Dangerfield VCR Tape to entertain everyone. I swear Sam had many of them literally falling off the sofa on the floor belly laughing. Thus, I had to run the tape back a bit so no one missed anything. God we had a damn fun evening.. thanks to Sam ❤️!

AXL was forced to go to church, and it was also Pentecostal. Basically, his days in Church and the Church Choir made him an international star, with a voice like no other. He made enough money by the early 90s to live the rest of his life.
Many people made it to the Big Stage because of their experiences' in Church.

I could watch Johnny bring out the very best of Sam all day long. Two masters of their crafts.

But, there are some true Christians he just takes home because they will not obey. Part of this I can defend scripturally, some is conjecture from scripture. But, I did see him one time giving a performance where he ridiculed believers for waiting 2,000 years for his return. I am fully convinced that when I get to heaven there will be some there that will surprise me. But, I also believe that there will be those missing that I will be surprised at not being there. There are few truly original comics with real heavyweight cred or potential .... even Bill Burr and Chappelle are direct descendants of Carlin who came from Bruce....but Carlin's voices, faces, physicality, political theory and philosophy and language command made him unique. Joan Rivers was unique. No one ever like her since. Or before. Kinison's violent delivery, former exp as a preacher, his cadence and tone and even style of dress made him unique - wholly unique. Johnny was not only the best host, he was also the best audience. The guest worked extra hard to please him knowing that all the people watching back home would enjoy it too. Both Carson and Dick Cavett were from Nebraska and they never lost that genuine interest in what that person in the chair was all about.

I literally cried the night my tv went out and I couldn’t watch Johnny. And I had the pleasure of meeting Sam AND Billy Idol outside the Eddie Murphy concert, got some autographs and asked him how he liked the show. He said, “I’m funnier”! He invited me to a show and then I opened a gate and let him and Billy in the EXREV black corvette out and they were on their way!

Ive met Sam when he came to Cleveland in the early 80s an carried a good conversation with him showIng interest in me. I was told when I'm in LA look him up giving me his ph#. A year an half later I was in LA an called him an told me to come to Comedy Store at 11am but be precise the door will be open. Sure enough the door was open an he remembered precisely everything we talked about when we met prior. There were 3 other comedians there but none I've seen or of an they swarmed me with questions about me an my life, I felt big! At the time little did know they were looking for material!!! Now Sam K was a wonderful an warm person to be around you felt good in his presence.👍🤪Sorry to see his life end. RIP SAM✌️

The classic moments of Johnny Carson just never ever get old. I so enjoy how he just makes all of his guests feel pretty special by treating them so good while making them look good for the audience.
