    at 19:50 you ask why they would make the same points and ground one base, and not another. As I understand, points can easily break at the base- especially while making the point. When they crack, its easily sharpened into the "ground base" type you find. People were able to fashion the apparatus either way, or there were different apparatuses that needed the ground base type.

    It's been many years since I've hunted A.I. artifacts. I recently came across a fascinating lecture by Wilson "Dub" Crook on the origins of American peoples in general based on the stone tools that they made. I found it particularly interesting that the Clovis is no longer considered the oldest type, having found so many similar Solutrean types and many other far below the Clovis depth. It was also the first time I saw what I frequently suspected. A "broken" point might not be a broken point at all but a push scraper. I'd recommend that lecture to all serious relic hunters.

    • @ChasingHistory
      @ChasingHistory  2 года назад

      @steakfire Thank you for sharing that lecture, if you could provide a link in the comments we and i am sure others would appreciate it! now is the most interesting time to be studying the "Peopling of the Americas" the entire history of when and how humans entered the western hemisphere is completely up for grabs! it is incredible to be living in that moment in history where our knowledge of the past get to be reinterpreted! we hope to have an episode on our channel soon covering the topic! we hope you have subscribed to our channel and will share our little show with others interested in history! thanks!

    • @Steakfrie
      @Steakfrie 2 года назад

      @@ChasingHistory Here is the link to the lecture I mentioned. Clovis were not the oldest.
      ruclips.net/video/7nUZTRXVrac/видео.html
      Another making the same assessments based on new archeological finds.
      ruclips.net/video/9T2XhKtU0hA/видео.html
      Both have stories of stubborn archeologists of the past insisting the mystery of the first peoples was solved with no need to investigate further. New evidence shows they were not correct. Also important is relic hunters may be in possession of artifacts 1000's of years older than they suspect, especially for ones who are digging and sifting their relics.

    Ive always thought that identifying points has never been cut and dry. Saying a certain point came from a certain time period just isn't that simple.
    Ive always been an outdoorsman and a hunter, and have always thought that any number of variables are no doubt involved in the manufacture of points by the user, as I would prefer a certain caliber bullet from another.
    Although hunting gear has definately changed over the years, hunters and the hunter mind, in its basic roots, haven't changed that much. It's all about personal preference...
    Personally, my opinion is that a certain "Indian" would've made points according to what material they had on hand, the type of flaking preferred, the shape and weight of the point, the type of animal hunted, amount of time willing to spend in manufacture, the art of napping passed down from generation to generation and different "nuances" added or taken away from each generation, the personal value of the points, amount of pride each person had in the craft, and lastly, the amount of trade between tribes.
    I find an assortment of points here in WV that are mostly made of Kanawha Black, but have found others made from materials located outside of WV. Which in my opinion, a lot more trade went on in those days than we tend to think.
    Thank you for the informative videos...and the enthusiasm behind them.

      Kalenn Nemoto I agree with you 100%, especially with all the point specific pre-forms. like throwback Thursday, when they play only 80's music, points come back in style sometimes

      @rustyshackelfordiii5587 6 лет назад

      I think points definitely had overlapping characteristics but what I think about is how drastically different the "oldest" points are to the more modern types.
      No other mechanical advances in history show this delineation from the awesome complex craftsmanship of clovis to the more modern small simple almost crude at times.
      Maybe a cataclysm shifted us towards smaller game and harder times....

      I don't know if you're familiar with the Cody Complex or the Dalton Tradition but both are clusters of varying types.. I'm sure that you're on the money with individual preferences playing a part but to add to that, I believe we would likely be surprised by how some points were actually used.. So some variants found in the same strata as other variants might have had different uses from one another.. Some as projectile points and others maybe used to process the kill etc..
      Even though there may be a consensus among archaeologists based on characteristics of a point, it's still speculation. Lithic study can tell us a lot, but usage is somewhat of a mystery.

  • @bigal25938

    Would like to know if certain types were used for certain jobs. One type especially for big game, one type for small game, one type for war etc. Guess we won’t ever know.

    • @ChasingHistory
      @ChasingHistory  2 года назад +1

      their was certain types that were used for certain purposes like tools for cutting plants vs meat.... or knives instead of projectile points. but the vast differences that you see is due to the technology changing over time and not for specific use. the bow is only 2,000 years old in north America so most of what we call "arrowheads" were never on an arrow.. most were simple knives and some were used on Atl-Atl darts. hope this helps and be sure to check out the episodes we just dropped on Prehistoric moundbuilding cultures!

    Would it be trade or migration that brought a point into a certain location. Also, strata's are some what good but a lot of ancient points can be found on the surface or in other strata's and vice versa.

  • @SharekGadd

    I understand stratification and type of points, but is there any research in type of point and the fauna it was shaped to hunt. Example: contemporary fishing lures. Contemporary hunting points.

    • @chasepipes5548
      @chasepipes5548 7 лет назад +3

      Chase Pipes here, mist Archaeologist agree that Projectile Points we're universal in the game they brought down. Archaeologically speaking, there is very little Evidence to give us a better understanding of your question, because few points have been found in the animals they brought down. common sense will leave to the conclusion that Prehistoric Cultures were smart enough to have different projectile for different game, & that those types evolved as hunting practices were advanced, point types change through the ages.... but the question is what you asked, are those changes an improvement on making a more efficient killing weapon, or just a change in fassion?..... sadly there is no answer for that... yet.... and the debate continues, hopefully of Enough sights are preserved & Archaeological technique improves we will have an answer.
      that is a Very Good Question!...

    iam from east Tennessee and have hunted artifacts for 32 years i found a aritfact that i can't identify it. It resembles a granny stone but couldnt b. It looks like it could have been used as a pin or button. its stone 3in long 3/8in wide 1/2in tall and has 3 groves and a taper on 1 side to a point and flat on bottom and has been pecked and ground to very smooth surface. is their a way i can send Mr Dean a picture or take it to him. I live in Unicoi co. I also have 1 more that is shaped like a butterfly made of yellow stone also pecked and ground to a smooth finish the scratches are still visible. and another that is made of soap stone round 5in across 1in thick and a hole in the midle big enough to put a finger in

      Btw, I found many rough stone tools/points while looking for arrowheads 2 days ago. Besides keeping for personal collection or donating, do you sell any of artifacts?

      This episode was made long before we had any ability to edit ... all we had was a camera and good and knowledgeable people to share what they know.... anyone can show you arrowheads... but few could actually TEACH you about them like the Late David Dean... were not here to show you how cool our arrowheads are .... but to teach you about them, there history and the people who once lived here. we apologize for our editing abilities... this was filmed Years ago.... we hope you will check out our more recent episodes.

    Trust Jesus Christ the SON of GOD! Roman’s 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus , and shalt Believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead , thou Shalt be Saved . John 3:18 He that Believeth on Him is Not condemned: but he that Believeth Not on him is condemned already, because he hath Not Believed in the name of the Only Begotten Son of God

      you realize that your just turning people away from Christianity by doing this... we respect all religions and everyone's right to worship as they see fit as laid out in the founding of the American republic. but when you do crap like this... it makes your religion look like its full of crazy people! .....as a Christian... we ask that you not do this on our channel
