  • In this podcast, Razib Khan talks with us about a very controversial subject i.e. "Genes and IQ". This is one of the most sensitive subjects in scientific circles. Razib takes us through the entire range of work in this field from Charles Murray, Robert Plomin, and Kathyrn Harden. We also look at many aspects of this research from the social justice and ethics point of view.

When external appearances or certain diseases are linked to genetics , no one has a problem . But talk about IQ or intelligence , everyone set their hair on fire ! A lot of who you are is genetics with some effect due to environment and upbringing . Live with that truth .

A lot of what we call patriarchy is also a result of the sexual difference between men and women
Rape is also a consequence of male sexuality. ..doesn't mean we tell women that they should learn to live with it!
What is natural is not necessarily good and what is good is not necessarily natural!
Claims of genetic superiority are the first few steps towards a genocide !

Or by having a conversation and try to find a solution .
Patriarchy is weakened because of modernity but what if modernity collapse than these things will come back with a vengeance .
We have to ask questions that are these issues really exist and if they exist how can they be solve.
Rapes are not gone women are living with it even there are laws ans punishment .
We have to ask if this behaviour is natural how can it be controlled and it will not go away by shouting by death to patriarchy or these genetic distinctions don't exist .

Really interesting @ 19:54 . I have a friend who thinks IQ is just your brain adapting to what you're interested in, and if you have little interest in complex things, you won't develop a high IQ. Razib seems to be positing: some slightly higher ability ---> seeking out complex things/ideas ---> greater ability, etc. In other words, it's an unstable system, in the sense that letting out the clutch on a car is an unstable system. Also important to point out, your interests are also likely highly heritable. But if you believe you're stupid, you may be afraid to pursue the things you're interested in, and never develop to your potential. Like a malnourished person with "tall genes" never reached potential height.

Dr. Khan you're ignoring generational differences in IQ - the Flynn efffect reversed decades ago, because the selective pressures that created high IQ in post WW2 Europe (war, starvation, natural disaster, disease, all of these are selective pressures and they don't affect us all evenly - the chance of survival is dramatically lower if you have a low IQ) are now absent in the west. If you want to look for the place on earth with the likely highest IQ today, it's probably Rwanda. (Seriously, look the place up, they're doing damn well for themselves). Human brutality is a powerful selective force, and we've engineered the least brutal world in human history. For exactly that reason, I fear we're going to lose it within a generation - we created heaven on earth, yet we do not deserve it.

I think book type of intelligence is inherited. Academic thinking is in the genes. But there are other gifts people can have. Many so-called intelligent people are dumb in practical things. What about genius types? How can someone grow up in a totally unintelligent environment be super smart? That is a question which interests me the most. Kind of out-of-the -blue knowledge about something that could not be genetic. Autistic people that have supernatural gifts. Any average highly intelligent person that has genetic reasons to be that way is not as mysterious to me as a person with unusual capabilities. Gifts that can't be traced back to upbringing are more valuable. Where does that come from? And there are people of any creed or color or priviledged or underpriviledged backgrounds that can have super powers. Are they created by mutations in their genes? Or coincidences of some recombinations of dna? I don't appreciate arrogance in book s.art people. Being humble is still for me at least a higher human quality than IQ test smartness. I was once given an IQ test and was angry that I had to prove that I a smart because I knew in advance that I would not be categorized as a candidate for umiversity studies because I come from an underpriviledged background. That country would not invest in my higher education so I boycotted the test by answering all questions wrong on purpose. But because I had a lot of time left, I drew pictures so they said I should be an architectual draftsperson because I'm good with my hands. Eventually, I left that country and proved to myself in the US that I can be more intelligent. I always knew it.

Bro, playing basketball takes intelligence. It is the same but it takes a lot of work to be the best basketball player like Kobe or Messi or Mayweather who play with their head than their body. It has a lot to do with solving problems too. Yes, Lebron is more of a body player but the likes of Messi who plan each and every situation and train accordingly are solving problems in seconds because they have done it in training. It is like taking an exam with your entire body and each fake or feint is like solving a problem with your body. Sports that do not include solving problems like rowing or various athletic events may be completely athletic but most aren't.

Here'a question for IQ enthusiasts. Who has the higher IQ, Beethoven or Michelangelo, or Muhammad Ali, or Franklin Delano Roosevelt, or Shakespeare? They were all very high achievers in their realms. Can we use IQ to find out anything about them which allows for comparison? I don't think so. So what value does IQ have? Not much. Mostly what IQ test tells us is who is good at getting high scores on IQ tests. After that, they're pretty much useless. If you just think about it for a minute, you realize that trying to rate something as complex as the human brain with a 3-digit number is ridiculous. As far as achievement goes, the wealth and education level of your parents is far better at predicting how far you'll go in this world.
