  • My XP printer stopped working and the error on screen was the ink pad is at the end of service life contact Epson support. For £10 and about an hours work it's simple and very cost effective for any DIY enthusiast to do the same. See below and the end of the video to see where I ordered the new ink pads from and the access code needed to reset the printer.
Video covers XP-500, 520, 540, and XP-600 to XP-860 models (XP-510, 530 use same pads but different installation approach).

Finally got my parts and did this with your guidance. I can't thank you enough. Epson emailed me saying it's time to buy another printer. I love the XP-810 and you can't get printers with these options anymore. Hopefully I'm good as new now.

Update. I got the new potty and put it all back together (my printer is an Epson XP-640 but it was very much the same) downloaded the programme while I was waiting for the post to arrive. Then followed instructions and all went smoothly. Unplugged USB Cable and checked again and yes printer all working. Thankyou very much for this easy to follow video. How kind of you to offer it. I can now use all my stash of inks and saved myself a load of money on a new printer.

Excellent and like other users really pleased that I could “recycle” my XP-620, rather than putting a perfectly usable printer into landfill. For my XP-620 the instructions are slightly different. At 06:14 it says there is no need to remove the front screw (part of 2) holding the tank in place, for the XP-620 you do need to remove this screen

Very well done. Found WIC pads from China for like $6US. Took about 15 minutes to complete the entire process of disassembly, clean tank, replace pads and reassemble. I have been a lifetime user of epson products and it is totally disappointing to have them declare a product obsolete and make it non-functioning through software. Thank you for the video.

With the guidance of your excellent video, I was able to remove the blackened waste ink pads (when I tried to wash them they dissolved!). I ordered new pads, easily installed them, watched your video step-by-step and successfully reassembled the printer (Epson XP-830). I ordered the code from OctoInkjet, received it immediately, watched their super video and viola!! I have a working printer again! Many, many thanks!

Thank you kind sir, worked a treat.
The XP-860 did start throwing up this error before we ordered the replacement + key, but it was intermittent.
After the replacement arrived, the printer was still working, so we just waited about 10 days until it was permanently erroring - then replaced.
I think if you fail to do that, the printer software more that likely will still see the ink waste pot as full - not sure, didn't want to risk it.

Many thanks for your brilliantly clear and helpful instructions. I've gone through the whole process without any problems and the printer now appears to work perfectly. My printer is an XP-630 so not identical but it is nevertheless essentially the same machine.
Interestingly, I did not even need a reset key at the end but simply switched on the machine and it worked straight away. I reused the old pads which I think will be just fine. One word of advice: put on gloves if you rinse and reuse the pads! I didn't and I will now have inky hands for the next few weeks...
The printer has been a totally reliable workhorse for years so no complaints there but I am disappointed that Epson are making it so difficult to service and repair. Their online help pages are directly misleading and unhelpful.

Your very detailed instructions were extremely helpful for ink pad replacement and reset of my printer, an Epson XP-630. I followed your instructions step by step. With the soiled ink pad you have to be double careful and use plastic gloves and a plastic bag. In cleaning out the excess ink reservoir I also have a helpful suggestion. Spray Oxi Clean Laundry Stain Remover in the reservoir, swish it around and rinse with hot water. Even drying out the reservoir with a paper towel, the towel was completely clean. The messiest part of the procedure was the easiest. With your fantastic instructions, and my little helpful hint it makes a complicated procedure easier than I thought. Thanks again.

All sorted. Though I seem to have a silver screw left over.
      Very easy, and straightforward
You need to be comfortable with handling a screwdriver and not frightened to bend plastic. The rest is a doddle.
The windows software is so easy to use. You do need a USB connection between PC and printer though.
48 hour delivery for the pads via royal mail so reasonably quick

@@richardauckland4191 That spare silver screw was probably the one that secures the front of the waste pad holder. Lots count of the times we forgot that step while we've done this process :) Luckily the lugs on the front of the pad holder will stop it from falling out so it's not needed.

I have the Epson XP-410. I ordered my new pads from Walmart and the pads came preinstalled in exact same case as on my printer, however, to install in this model, you close front control panel and paper load. Put printer standing up on panel end, remove one screw and use a flat head screw driver to move tab on left top corner and lift panel out. New pads preinstalled in case go in the same way old one removed. Changed pads that were 10 years, 11 months, 2 weeks and 3 days old. I print a lot and the old pads and assembly were not only filthy and full of ink but the entire space was full of dust, etc. and I blew the entire space out with Blow Off Computer Duster in a can before installing new pads. Now I just need to find a key to reset new printer pads so I can start printing again. It took me about 5 minutes to change the case with new pads and I'm 76.

Great video thanks. I have pads arriving in the mail tomorrow from Octoink for my XP 860 and your video will be very handy as a double check! However, I reset the counter the other day with Octoinks utility and a new code and as you found it was so easy and seamless. I actually did it on WiFi and it worked perfectly I have a strong stable connection from my laptop to printer and was pretty confident it wouldn't be a problem. Many thanks. As you say, the actual error is purely a page limit (20,000 or thereabouts I think) and not the condition of your Printer Pad as such. So if like me you reset the counter with an online download of code and utility from Octoinks it does resurrect the printer though I would recommend replacing the pads soon after. Many thanks.

Many thanks. Very clearly done. I am annoyed that NONE of the Epson printers give any warning that they are approaching end of life for the pads (confirmed by their no-help desk). I was in the middle of a critical job this evening, when it just stopped with the message. We are a long way from any service agent, and no doubt it will takes some time for them to fix it. I will be following your lead and doing it myself.

Yes - agree with comments - very helpful video - thanks. (Procedure is same for XP-600).The error message took me by surprise! Have been using non-Epson inks and ran into trouble because cyan jet got blocked. Flushed OK but then printer refused to work with non-Epson cartridges! Then I I got the inkpad message. Washed the existing ones but messy! Haven't put them back yet as still wet but I assume they will be OK, at least for now. Will buy a replacement set just to be safe. Next I need to do reset. :-)

UPDATE: OK got a reset code and the reset utility program. Worked fine but a bit of an obscure process. I don't see why a user should pay for the privilege of resetting their printer when a normal part of the useage cycle shuts it down. Seems bizarre and somewhat exploitative. Epson should give a reset code free shouldn't it? And how do third party vendors (Tom, Dick and Harry) get the right to issue reset codes? Money for nothing it seems. An odd setup all round. Still, printer's working again thank goodness and couldn't have done it without this video. When I reassembled it I had a screw left over!! No problem just had to backtrack and found the empty screw hole ... Thanks again.

Excellent video, cleaned existing filters and bought one time code on eBay in hindsight it was not worth cleaning the filter it’s better to buy new ones

Great video. Gave me confidence to do this myself and save 70% repair cost offered by Epson - comparable to the cost of a new printer! The one screw that couldn't be positioned by hand to tighten was tricky, but I sellotaped the screwhead on to the screwdriver that gave enough hold to just position the screw upright in place and provide a slight turn that enabled the screw then to be tighten in place. Thank you.

Daaaaaamn. I got worried that when I turned the printer off & on again, that it'd still come back with the "ink pad has reached the end of its life" msg. (My inbuilt pessimism module 😏)
However, I was pleasantly surprised to see the thing return to normal operation.
Much respect, my man. Your video will be saved and/or downloaded...👍🏿👌🏿👍🏿

Hugely grateful for your one-handed repair and filming, and the time you took to describe each stage of the procedure. Result: success on my Epson XP-800. (I wish the inkpad & keycode suppliers' website was as orderly as your film!) Thanks again.

Hi Tristram - thank you very much for taking the time to record and upload this extremely helpful video.
I have just completed the process on my elderly XP-610 and everything went very smoothly.
The only thing I would note is that my connection is wireless over my home office network rather than by ethernet or USB cable, and it worked just fine, no issues.
I took the opportunity to update the firmware using the official EPSON utility, clean and realign the heads, and it is working very well indeed - good for another 8 years I reckon!
I don't use this printer for photos - just normal office duties - and I've put all sorts of pattern cartridges through it with no issue at all - it's more sensitive to good quality paper for the kind of work it does.
Once again - thanks for the video!

Thanks very much. Helped me fix the Epson XP-760 replacing pads and using the reset tool even though I had the instructions sent with the pads and reset key I found it easy to see with your video guide. I got mine from octoinkjet on eBay but I think they have their own website too. Extremely Happy. Thanks again 🙂

I'm extremely grateful for this video! On your recommendation, I ended up purchasing the repair pack from Octoink as well and even though it came with instructions on how to take apart the printer, your video was far more helpful for actually walking through what I needed to do. Thank you!

Fantastic, clear video. Thank you! Utterly appalling that Epson (and no doubt all printer manufacturers) design such needless and unnecessary obsolescence into their products. Shout out to OctoInkjet as well for supplying the pads and the reset key for £15!

Excellent video, Tristram. I got straight to the aptly-named "potty" of my Epson XP-700 using your instructions. I'm now waiting for Octo Inkjet to send me the new pads. All-in cost so far £15.00. Great value if I can get it to work with the new pads and code. My only slight criticism is that the volume of your commentary was a tad low. I could hear better once I plugged in earphones. It may have been a problem at my end. In any case, a really helpful video. Many thanks.

An excellent video explanation. I have the XP-610 which has just come up with the early warning message, I had no idea that is had a tank with pads in it? Before retirement I was a Photocopier engineer for 35 years, so carrying out the procedure looks simple, however I've never like Epson printers, the ones I've owned over the years have always been noisy and unreliable, so do I spend money on a set of pads and obtaining the unlock key, or do I throw it in the bin and buy a brand new HP or Canon printer? Mmm ..descisions...descisions! All the Copiers I worked on had a simple slide out waste tank, that could be emptied and replaced easily by the user. Epson...take note instead of ripping off your customers with more trouble and expense.
