Absolutely especially this being a ranger trim with the bedside camper special tool box in the bedside and it is not rusted out!!! And they were long bed trucks for work trucks for a reason, not much the short beds of the era could safely haul compared to the long bed trucks... and honestly i think the profile of the long bed truck generally just looks better in my opinion..I'm speaking as a owner of a 2000 dodge ram laramie slt quad cab long bed magnum V8 1500 4x4 a big truck for a 1500 155 inch wheel base that's a big foot print for a 2000 half ton truck lol
I use SOS (steel wool with built in soap) pads with Ajax or comet. I never stay in one spot too long. This is good for removing mildew on paint or even faded. Also great method for cleaning aluminum trim like you have on this truck. It’ll shine like new I agree not cutting up truck into short bed. That bed is too nice to cut up
I'm glad you're doing this channel. I'm enjoying you, Freiburger, Dirthead Dave, and of course VGG so much. It's nice that you guys can do your own thing without all the producers, etc. that comes with traditional TV shows. Keep up the great work. Of course I still watch MotorTrend TV, but these channels are just refreshingly different.
Yea. As other's have said. Leave it as is. Just clean it up. Maybe a tune up. Change the fluids. A new gas tank, maybe, or just clean out the old one. And just drive it and enjoy it. I bet somewhere down the line someone is going to make you an offer for it that you won't be able to refuse. It's a cool old truck. Such a time capsule! Love it!
Hey man. When I get a new lived outside project I always give it a bleach bath first. Bleach kills anything organic on the surface. Jut bleach with a shot of landury soap in a pump up spiayer before the pressure wash. Just wait 15 minutes after coating everything and wash. You will be amazed how much of that rough stuff on the paint washes off. I live in a wetter area but killing what lives on the paint makes cleanup faster. Love that new truck. That one has me hunting up a long bed.
I've had good success with vinegar for removing rust. I've wet a shop towel and let it soak on an area for an hour and it dissolves the rust and protects the metal. It should work well with scotch brite. As a bonus it also lifts the peeling paint on 90s Chevys.
Love the glow-up. I bought a 1988 crew-cab squarebody dually and used S.O.S pads (pre-soaped 0000 wool) and a hose and it got rid of all the spot rust and impurities. Sealed the truck with Zep High Gloss floor polish and it stands proud. Would be AWESOME to see this camper dropped a bit on good rolling stock!
Wow man, that kit is insane!! Props to QA1 wanting to help out in the first place. This truck is going to be pretty sweet! Can’t wait to see more!! I hope I don’t find myself searching marketplace for a F100….
We are sitting down watching you guys. I keep saying how pretty the kit is. 😂 At the end of the video, my husband stopped on the picture of everything. I then had the pleasure of being able to ask a bunch of questions on how things go together. Thank you, Lucky for letting us be able to talk cats and trucks, and me being able to understand more. 👏
Pure CLR, I would assume is what they were talking about. We used it, commonly, on stucco that had rust stains and what not. It's very caustic / high vapor so if you ever do try it, do it outside.
The two-tone paint on this truck is unusual and cool. I've never seen one like it with that Prairie Yellow roof over white and I like it. Original owner must have special-ordered this truck. Definitely build the FE! Swap to the 428 crank = 410, set of heads, bump the compression up and a decent cam, it'll haul.
I’m literally watching your video right now and just saw the wagon parked in old torrance by la capilla Mexican restaurant, Enjoy your lunch. I say put some nice wheels on the truck and leave it as is!
Other than cleaning it up. Just leave it as it and use it as a daily shop truck/parts getter. Very unassuming and I love it. And obviously fix anything mechanical / fuel system related
Can't wait to see this project start, I did a Heidt's super ride conversion on my 69 F100. Lot more to it than a simple bolt in. A lot of cutting to remove the factory twin I beam. Good luck!😁👍👍
don't slam it down don't kill that Ranger-tough truck, it'll last forever - that rig is a lifetime parts hauler. A little Ford Wimbledon White touch-up blend here and there and you're in Bidness
Cool QA1 suspension upgrade? I'm thinking complete complete replacement what ever way cool damn fine to see that you're keeping on keeping on best wishes for your future
Cant wait to watch this one! Also cant wait to see how it fits on a F250. Only advertised for a F100. I have been toying putting this on my 65 F250 but couldn’t get any clear guidance that it would fit. Keep em coming Lucky
I have done this in the past... worked out okay. Hit the rust areas with brake clean and a hard scrub brush... then rinse. Now, purple stuff with a scotch brite pad on a DA with low air pressure... to run slower than normal. That did a great job. Then satin clear. Bobs your Uncle, job done. Good day mate "" 😊
I like the F250, I have a 70 F100 custom sport with lots of aluminum trim that I straightened and polished, but it's much easier to replace it if you can find it. Nice truck good idea to keep it stock 👍
In my opinion, the FIRST thing I'd do is relocate that fuel tank from the cab to under the bed! Then take care of mechanicals & make it safe. Wheels, tires, & brakes & that should do it for a dependable daily driver! It looks solid & sounds great! 👍 Best wishes!🙏
This! And it's easy because this truck already has the extra under bed tank like my late uncle's camper special that I am restoring. You can see the gas cap for it behind the driver's door in the last video.
Love the truck, I had a 1967 f250 years ago. With a 390, and a c6 trans. I have a 428 (434) engine, rebuilt sitting on a stand. I would love to find something to put it in someday. SOS pads do work well
I like how you said you weren't going to Hot Rod it just a long brother as you remember all roads are paved with good intentions and nothing lays down the set of 11s like a road made out of good intentions
Hey from Dublin Ireland , so glad i finally got to your channel , subscribed right away , big fan of yours from watching you and Tony jerking around in day past . i drive a 2011 Ford ranger . 2.5 diesel , dont a lot to keep it passing inspection . your truck sounds great and its very relaxing to watch you work . American culture at its finest in my book . Tks Lucky . be safe
Muiatic acid is what the car detailers around here to get rid of the rust from bad brakes. You can also save the stainless steel by fine sanding and some buffing. You can also straighten out stainless trim hammer and Dollie’s files. 👍
I think it was the rain running off the camper on to the truck, yeah clr removes rust and calcium deposits fairly decent.. love the two tone yellow and Wimbledon white truck
Lucky, get some aluminum brightener. I've used it for years on these types of clean ups. It is a acid cleaner. Steel wool and the acid on the trim. Paint and chrome works amazing to. Keep off the glass for extended length or it will etch.
Regarding what to do is easy.. put the widest AT,s on the back you can fit and junkyard a 460, install whipple and let it hunt. New suspension would be advisable at that junction.
@Luckysgarageshow, I have been party to an install on a Dentside and will be going that route with my own. It takes longer to grind, hammer, cut, swear at, cry at, and forcibly remove the Ford factory rivets that attach everything to the frame rails on the Bumpside and Dentside trucks. When you finally get to bolting on the QA1 parts, it goes really quick and is great quality ride and handling. Helping on the one I did, sold me on doing The QA1 suspension over an old CVPI front end. Ear protection, a good air hammer with the punch bit, and a new grinder disc are strongly recommended as well as cool drinks. Seriously the frame is like a tuning fork when you start hammering on it, and that ringing sound stays with you for hours or days after.
@@possumwerx it works great to clip the head off the rivet, but you’re still hammering it out of the holes after they have been there for 50 years with the air hammer.
Measure out the head of your plasma cutter and determine the circle size for a ring you can manufacture. The circle size should be just under the diameter of the shaft of the rivet or if you prefer, the ID of the hole of which the shaft sits inside. Center the ring over your rivet and then use your plasma cutter to cut through the head and the shaft of the rivet at the same time. No more rivet head and no more shaft. I use neodymium magnets to attach my guide ring to the frame so there is no movement or slippage when you run the head of your plasma cutter around in a little circle when cutting. Yes, some guys will zip off the heads and then blast the shafts by eyeballing it but that's a personal preference thing in my opinion. I don't use that method myself because it's too easy to damage the holes which doesn't mean anything if you weld them up but it does if you intend to use them as a guide for other parts.
@ with the QA1 suspension you end up using most of the left over holes, so you can’t really weld them up. I like your method, I’ll have to try that. That would make things quicker if not easier.
Go to your big box store in the paint section, and look for powdered CLR in a box. Mix with water as needed. Apply with sponge, use Scotchbrite pad as necessary. Works MUCH better
Personally I'm more of a fan of building the FE and putting EFI on it and a good trans behind it to get 20mpg with the great big block sound.. Coyote exhaust is harsh as hell, nothing beats big block Ford rumble.
With all that unboxing and metal parts stacked inches from that awesome Red Mustang I thought I was going to pass out. Waiting for the table to collapse and demolish the drivers side.
Love the truck! I had an 83 gmc that had similar paint and at local truck club meeting a few demos where done and my truck was chosen. The product was Ardent Marine boat polish. We did the 600 and 1000 put in a buffer and magic happens. If you can find it it's worth a try. I'd send a video I I knew how.

Hey, Lucky Muretic acid will work without taking off the paint, but at full strength it will take the rust down to bare metal you can find it in Home Depot near the brick
Glad you're keeping the shortbed. CLR and scotchbright works most of the time, but ajax or comet works too. I think key is scotchbright pad, a shop rag wont cut it. The guy hasnt asked for his rims back yet?
I need that QA-1 setup for my 84 short box 2wd F-150. I want new suspension all the way around so bad. Might be cheaper just too to build a frame from scratch and hit up the wrecking yards and swap meets
SOS pads do a great job on rust and the soap in it is a great lube and a light buff after with mild compound will make it pop. Did that truck come from somewhere else because I live on the Canadian plains and that truck has a lot more rust than many of those bump side that still roll around here. PS we don't have crazy amounts of salt used on the roads where I live so many other areas in Canada this truck would just be a brown spot and a few pieces of stainless trim.
Glad your not going to shorten the bed. One of the coolest things about the ranger is that tool box.
Finally a build where the "longbed" gets to be just that! :D
