“At least I have a husband, I could be out there working AND taking out the trash!” As someone who doesn’t have a spouse and has to work and support myself and take out my own trash, I can confidently say my current situation is MUCH better than being married to someone I’m not truly happy with. And **especially** someone who is misogynistic, smug, hypocritical, and-worst of all-a CM.

Girl same. Anna set that bar on the ground with that comment.
Taking out the trash is not a gender specific task. Neither is changing a light bulb. And one of the perks of having money is being able to pay people for lawn care, auto repair, and fixing the plumbing.

Yeah imagine the spousal quality bar being so low that the best thing he does is take out the garbage. I remember when she was pregnant the first time and he went to go pick up some car with a tow truck before her doctors appointment. All he could focus on was this damn car not his sick wife and the fact that he made them over an hour late to her doctors appointment. I couldn’t believe how selfish he was and the excuses that Anna made saying something about how he was such a hard worker or some nonsense. Fml.

I think she is still doing it alone I thought marriage was supposed to be 2 people not 1 and a half when the half wants to be there and it's like she's already doing the stuff alone I'm not sure what the difference is? Is it just me like am I just too young to understand or am I just stupid? Cause I'm 21 and was in a very very toxic abusive relationship and was in it for 3 and a half years and I couldn't be more damaged than I am and even though he had proposed I was always the one doing everything he'd purposely fill up all his dishes and dirty his entire house and I have epilepsy and if I had a seizure he'd let me fall then when it was done he'd ask from the couch if I was ok then I'd have to continue then he'd purposely call his mom tell his mom I destroyed his house and I wasn't cleaning up after myself and she'd come over get in my face and almost slapped me a few times and would say her son deserved better then if I missed something on the dishes he'd break it and make me clean the glass and then make me redo all of them and that's isn't even half of things so I mean I'm not really sure what she means by her statement

As a former fundie, I completely understand Anna’s behavior in the booth. Notice that her dad had to reassure her that it was ok for her to be “alone” with Josh. Not only was she surprised that he was there, she was shy and had been taught her whole life that she should never sit close to a member of the opposite sex. We had the “6 inch rule” and they would measure with a songbook or Bible to make sure we were appropriately spaced. Also, she had only met Josh in person 2-3 times. How she is acting is perfectly normal in cults like these.

Holy hell that explains it. I went to Catholic school and thought it was odd we had confession so often, had nuns hit our pews for cheixh singing practice, and had our skirts measured every morning. I’m now an atheist. I’m sorry but I hate all religion. Along w school, I had Sunday school and church processions and singing at my family’s foreign church (I didn’t understand a word) shoved down my throat. I’ve had 2 natural miscarriages and absolutely will never get married after watching my alcoholic “father” (we are no contact. I won’t even let him see my dog who is treated way better than any of these family vlogging assholes’ kids), I will NEVER marrry. Trying to find IVF for $22k alone bc it’s just about too late bc of cancer treatment. I listened to everyone tell me I didn’t want or need kids at 28. I’m now 36 and very close to menopause. My only dream in life is to be a mom. And I’ll be a single mom by choice. Doing it alone. MY CHOICE. I cannot imagine having to wait for a partner to immediately marry just to sleep with. 9/10 fundamentalist married couples divorce. I’ll be happy alone w my dog and my baby. Thanks but no thanks. A god would not have let what happened to me, happen to me. We are all alone in this life.

We had that at a Christian school I went to for 2 years. Hardly anyone followed it. 😂 I had a buddy who joked that he broke it the same day they handed out promise rings. I was with him when we threw them in the trash. It was the last day of grade 10 and I was going to a public school in September and he spent another year in purgatory. The basketball star got the volleyball captain, one year his senior, pregnant and while he was allowed back after a week, she was banned from the school for the duration of her pregnancy. I saw her sneak in the back to talk to the cook, and I assured her I wouldn’t rat on her. I couldn’t wait to leave. The students were more or less fine, but the administrators and the policies were insane. There are things I miss about that school, but the moralizing and double standards were 2 things I never will.

I want to know how Josh learned it. Especially since their family traditions are not to speak of intercourse. It’s my opinion his only sexual interludes have been as a victim and he learned how to groom. It’s not something we are born with. I know they change the rules in at least Pennsylvania - there is no statute of limitations when it comes to abuse against a minor. Oh - I know grandfathering people through the system if they committed the abuse even if it was before the law was enacted they are still able to be held accountable.
Edit: actually - I’m not sure if this holds true since he was a minor at the time but his parents knew and did not report it to the proper authorities. I think in at least in some states that doesn’t have any limitations

He lost one of his men in that one... he went back up one time too many trying to get as many people out as he could. When found his body, they realized he made a desperate attempt to save a child by covering her body with his. The Firestorm that hit him was so hot, his badge was melted.

I agree with you. Sexual abuse on a child specifically kills a child's capacity to respect himself or herself. It kills a child's caoacity to have a normal sexual life as an adult. It kills the child's innocence and capacity to truly be a child This destroys and kills the child's childhood. So, yes, it is a type of a murder. The child's body is a shell of a person that is alive but all the things that make up the emotional and some physical parts of a child are killed. The penalty for this should be worse than the penalty for murder. There is no guaranteed cure for this perversion. They should never get out of jail.

My mom once told me that she'd listened to the argument for "courting" (*cough* arranged marriage *cough*) and felt it was reasonable, but my dad said no. He said he refused to be responsible for his children's relationships. This isn't a comment against my mom, she's an innocent person who tends not to see things for what they are and wants to believe the best of things. My dad has his faults, but he never liked the methods of the ATI movement, and (as a daughter) I appreciate him immensely for it.

ATI and their ilk are sure devious, I'm glad your father knew better! When I was young my mom listened to "Focus on the Family" and even got the newsletter. She used to tell me all the time what they said, and why we "needed" to listen. Once I was old enough and learned who they actually were, I told my mom not to support then or listen to what they said. And she actually listened! She's a Catholic, so I pointed out how when they said we need to be a "Christian nation," they were talking about THEIR brand of "christianity," and that they don't even consider Catholics to be Christian, so if they ever got their way she'd no longer be able to practice and would have to become their style of Baptist. That was all it took for her to give them up! It's been a really long time, and I can't even think of the last time she brought them up, it was years ago!

I remember when my abusive husband admitted to me that he had sex with 9 other women.... in 4 months. I was sick for days. I could not pick up the pieces of me. It was months and months before I finally left him and then divorced him and even then.....I still loved him. I did NOT want to divorce him. But I knew he would never be safe for me. I knew he would lie to me again. I had become so codependent. It happened very, very quickly. This women has been with this man for YEARS. How much worse would it be for her then it was for me? He will go to prison. She will hopefully have enough space to heal and realize that she deserves better. But even if she doesn't, her children will be protected from a man who is, unfortunately, not safe for them to be alone with. She can not mentally process the reality of what he has done. I don't think she is capable right now. Please don't hate this women. Her world is about to be turned completely upside down. He isn't going to be with her soon. He will go to prison. I think it's about reform. If Anna showed signs of growth and understanding of why what she did was wrong and how she needs to be better, then most people would be inclined to leave it at that. Because she was brainwashed at a very young age and put in a very abusive situation. But she still has custody of those kids and goes out of her way to demonstrate she's learned nothing. So the fact she's going to continue to fail to Protect children just doesn't sit right. Brainwashed of not, you don't get a pass when your behavior is putting children at risk.

Remember, she has been trained from birth to avoid bringing attention to herself, accepting flattery from men, allowing herself to be touched by a male or in close proximity to a male... there is so much more going on here than her response to Josh specifically as an individual.
She is reserved, defensive and fearful because that is the *conditioned response* she has been *taught* to have.

However, the degree of cringe and outrage you both expressed still took me by surprise. As a survivor of CSA myself, I thought I knew how horrible and wrong it is, but the intensity of your reactions took me aback. Being in an abusive and controlling environment growing up, not being allowed to speak, speak up, or even have an opinion, let alone express it has HUGE ramifications on the entirety of your life. Even now, at 59, having been to countless therapists, etc. I am still, apparently, minimizing the importance of what happened to me. That is how pervasive abuse is. Some people believe that “all you have to do is not take it” or “she must be ok with it or she would have left”…. No, just no. It still boggles my mind that people (my parents included) never realized that not being allowed a voice with them and little outside contact would make it MUCH MUCH more difficult if not impossible to “not take” anything from anyone or even recognize that I was in a dangerous situation! When you’re taught every single day of your childhood, all day and at every interaction, that you don’t matter, that you have no right to speak, no right to ever be angry, that how dare you not jump & obey immediately when a word is uttered in your general direction, that you are always wrong no matter what because you are but a child… how the hell do you think it can ever be possible for me to say “No!” when insulted, abused or assaulted?

I appreciate his wife (Megan) giving context to how that culture is and what is seen as the norm there - I was raised in the same religion and I can tell you it’s extremely stifling and demeaning as a girl. We’re simultaneously expected to be extremely interested/worshipping men but at the same time before you’re married you have to act extremely pure or you’ll get called a “harlot” (and that’s the nice word for it). I fortunately got out of that cult a long time ago and I always feel for the children being continuously forced to be in this culture to this day. Women are taught to be responsible for everything, including keeping the men in line and “pure” even though most everyone I knew wasn’t holding themselves to that standard in reality. It’s a toxic place to grow up in and it allows men to get away with horrible things and it fosters a lot of victimizing poor young girls that didn’t do anything wrong except for the misfortune of being born into a family that practiced this religion.

I think we are now seeing these daughters breaking away from Jim Bob's "restrictions" regarding the way they were forced to dress and wear their hair, etc. It's a shame that some denominations lay down these weird rules and laws and blame them on the way a Christian should be when it has nothing to do with what the actual Word of God says. Yes, women are told to dress "modestly" but the definition of "modestly" has nothing to do with the way those girls were raised to dress.... I'm glad these girls are breaking away, dressing more like every day girls dress today while keeping their Christianity. Personally, I like the Bates Family.... they are far more real and relatable than the Duggars.... the Duggar kids always seemed to be hiding something and had a hard time being comfortable in front of the camera.... but I did like the new show with the Duggar kids and without Jim Bob and Michelle....

Sure her brother has offered to take her and her seven children in, but then what? For a woman in a more normalized societal situation staying with a man like Josh I would have far less compassion, but being raised in a cult changes a lot. Oh wow. I'm SO glad you're covering this. Somehow this man, his crimes, and his family have been able to escape a lot of criticism.
Edit: I've actually just looked up his wife, because I wanted to know how many kids they had after Ana's recent birth was discussed. She has had seven children with this man, four girls with this newest birth. She even walked into the courtroom today WITH HIM, hand-in-hand. He's been charged with having "media" involving children under the age of twelve. I'm sorry, but I'd be terrified for my children.
Edit 2: I am absolutely horrified at the end. And this is just small snippets. THANK YOU for covering this man and for promising to continue covering this family. They need to get exposed for this horrid behavior.

When Corey Feldman and Corey Haim came out and said the number one problem in Hollywood is pedos the media did everything discredit them. Look how long they protected Epstein. You have to really work at a marriage and keep his attention." And "If he strayed it because you didn't love him enough or he didn't feel loved enough".I later found out my friends husband cheated on her. She said it gave her the kick in the butt to start wearing full face makeup everday (she had a baby 2 months prior to this). Some religious groups absolutely manipulate these girls into thinking that "his" actions are her fault. And i really wonder if thats why shes trying so hard to "fix him". Because if this family fails, everyone will think its her fault.

The Duggars' cult literally has booklets stating that cheating is because the wife isn't being 'joyfully available' and that if you're a woman and someone sexually assaults you, you have to "forgive them and ask yourself how you tempted them"

Around the time Josh and Anna met, her parents were allegedly trying to get TLC to make a show focusing on them and their friends, like the Duggar shows, and thought the relationship of Josh and Anna would be the perfect crossover/bridge. It never materialized, but the rumor was they tried for quite awhile, especially after the marriage. Considering what Josh has been convicted of, it really gave me pause to see Anna's younger sisters along on the outings with them. Also, I can remember some of his younger sister's he admitted to molesting being sent as "chaperones" on these "courtship" outings. Imagine being someone's victim and then being made to tag along on outings where looks at his young future wife like hamburger he wants to lick the whole time. Further, at the point at which JimBob is giving the "life talk" to Josh after we know he was already experienced forcing himself on his sisters and collecting illicit p**n, I wanted to vomit out my eyes.

This is so hard to watch.. 😢 I grew up in a community like this. I’m now divorced and living on my own, but I was very much like Ana growing up. Listening to you describe Ana’s reaction to a lot of this is like your describing me when I was 18/20. I got married at 22 basically because I felt like I had to based on my “faith”. Everything you’re saying is spot on.
