  • Stuart Epps is a legendary British recording engineer who toured the world as Elton John's personal assistant during his 1974 tour. Stuart was one of the few who hung out with John and witnessed the incredible concert at Madison Square Garden when Lennon joined Elton on stage on for what was to be one of John's final public performances. Thanks Patti! I’ve heard so many people talk about that night; but talking to Stuart was different for me. It was the closest I think I’ll ever get to feeling what that experience was like. As always, thanks for watching!

That Elton John / John Lennon version of "I Saw Her Standing Her Standing There" was on the B-side of the first record that I ever bought...the 45 rpm of "Philadelphia Freedom" by the Elton John Band way back in 1975. It doesn't get much better than that! Jon, don't you wish you had been at that Madison Square Garden concert in 1974?

      EVERY ONE DOES

Man I had the exact same experience! I bought Philadelphia Freedom and my buddy and I were knocked out by hearing John talk about “an old estranged fiancé of mine called Paul”. I still think it’s John they played a Paul song that night. Elton had been playing it on that tour so it made sense; but I can’t help but wish they had worked up a song John wrote. The closest I came to feeling the buzz of being at that show was interviewing Stuart Epps. Hearing him describe it was very visceral for me. I’ve heard a hundred people describe it; but it was different talking to someone who was there. I can’t imagine the vibe in that place!

Utterly incredible documentary, as usual, Jon. I consider you the world's #1 EltonJohnologist. The time and effort put into these videos, and your channel will become goto reference videos into the future. You've shared a lot about yourself also, and when I'm next in America I'll hope to shout you a coffee if you've time. Keep up this work, Jon. It is a significant channel, and I would call on all followers to reach out to someone you know who likes Elton, and to get them to subscribe.

Leave it to Yoko to spoil a good Garden Party!..

    • @JonBlackstone

Poor Yoko. She gets such a bad rap. I remember watching “let it be” in the movie theater (in the early 80s) and every time she came on screen the audience would literally hiss and boo. Even as a teenager I thought that was disgusting and hypocritical. I’ve listened to pretty much every interview John did; and he said something I’ll never forget. He basically said “if you’re a fan of mine, and you think she’s evil, or leading me around like a dog on a leash, then screw you. I’m not here for you. I’m here for Yoko and Sean. If you don’t understand that then you don’t understand anything about me”. That’s my paraphrased version of it. It’s especially hypocritical when Beatles fans (who claim to be about peace and love) are so cruel and hateful towards the most important person in John’s life. It’s as if they’re saying “I love what John Lennon stood for; but why did he pick that awful woman?” To be clear I’m not saying this about your comment. I assume you feel the same way as I do. I confess I can’t stand the sound of her voice. In fact, I find it to be one of the most annoying sounds I’ve ever heard. And I certainly don’t understand why John thought the world would accept her music alongside his. But Yoko always strikes me as a lovely person and a perfect fit for John. He was no dummy. He had a lot of emotional scars and issues from the past; and Beatlemania took its toll on him as well. It would take a special person to help him work through his baggage. But by 1980 he seemed to be at peace and very content with himself and his little family. I’m so glad that he reached that place. Listening to the songs on “double fantasy” always makes me sad, but joyful at the same time. He was so excited about the future; and seemed fulfilled by his role as a father. Some people never get to that place. I still miss his voice in our world. Being the very forthright guy he was I suspect he would be very disappointed and critical of what’s happened to pop music.
