- We all love turbo charged cars. We all love manual cars. WE ALL LOVE ALL WHEEL DRIVE. Now we have another contender in the ring with all 3 options and thats the GR Corolla! is it a good enough competitor for the 2022 WRX? Or does it stand on its own pillars? In this video I compare some of the features that both come with. I think that both the 2023 GR Corolla and 2022 WRX are great options it just comes down to your budget!

I was interested in the Corolla GR when I was on the new car quest but at the time they were unobtainable. Once I started looking at my old obsession (WRX) there was no turning back.
Same. I kept getting told crazy mark ups for a GRC. I went to a dealership and drove a WRX. I stalked the forums and RUclips watching how cool these new VB WRX are and was hooked. I’ve had me VB WRX for 2 months and have dumped countless mods 😂. Love the car.
Yea I had already had my heart set on a WRX. Of course I still would have gotten a WRX after seeing those Corolla prices, regardless of how much I'd want one.
@@HeavyMetalWRX I think a 2.4 liter engine will always be better for modding then a 3 cylinder.
Many things happening here…
The GR Corolla is a new model, it’s Toyota and there is a worldwide hype about it. The WRX is a fifth generation, was not “improved” so much compared to last gen in terms of hp, and is hated because of a non existent STI version.
But if you compare both of them in terms of performance, interior, looking, etc., you cannot tell one is far superior to the other.
The GR Corolla feels stronger stock vs stock, and some could tell funnier, but I’ve driven both, and they are not that different.
A good driver could smoke a GR Corolla in a WRX and viceversa, specially on track. 0-60 time is not everything, and a spec sheet cannot tell everything. The WRX is slower than the Gr in the 0-60 but once corners are present, both are amazing and driver performance becomes the most important.
Media is placing the GR Corolla way too high compared to the WRX, but it’s more because it’s so new and they are looking for readers, they talk so much about the feelings, the super engine, bla bla… but that 2.4L in the Subaru is so under-stressed it could easily make much more power than the 1.6 three cylinder with no risk of failure.
I would have to admit the stick shift in the Toyota is more forgiving than the WRX, that’s why driving the Subaru requires a lot more practice to really show how capable it is. Maybe this is also a factor why the GR Corolla is considered better in short term comparisons…
But well, coming back to this video topic… Spot on! These two are really comparable, but you cannot say that without a lot of people complaining and saying they are in different categories.
Both are sporty, AWD, fun to drive, family suitable, reliable, and much more.
If prices were MSRP for both, decision would be tough, but as the Toyota is now so expensive, decision, at least for me, is obvious!
Congratulations! Great content!
Great comment, cores around me have a 47k +sticker. Saw a few in person and the body lines aren’t quite as nice as I thought from ads.
Great car though, Toyota put a LOT into a little package, would be an absolute steal if it was msrp. Curious to see the torque curve on the 3 cyl if it’s up high or has the mid range like the FA24. Hope to drive one some day!
Full stop, my biggest gripe on my VB performance wise is the brakes. Excited to see the aftermarket scene on both of these platforms! ❤ ✌️
Absolutely amazing insight here! I agree with a lot of these points. I do think that like for like drivers would be fun to see between these cars.
I made the decision between the two last week. The cheapest I could find a GR Corolla was with a $5K markup because I was from out of state. If you buy the GR Corolla you should buy it with the Performance Package. If you actually get the Corolla at MSRP it is enticing - $40K with the Performance Package. I couldn't find a GRC for less than a $5K markup, so I went with a WRX at $2,000 off MSRP. That is a real price difference of $45K - $28,300 = $16,700. I took one WRX and kept $16,700 for maintenance and mods. 1700 miles on it in a week and very few regrets.
Similar experience, and was ready for the GRC (originally put a deposit on one @ $5K over), but my wife eventually sat in one and HATED the cheap / cramped interior. She loved the WRX tho, and I was able to find a Limited for below $4500 MSRP, with 2.9% APR @48 mo. Also got a $500 loyalty coupon from SOA (not my 1st new Ssubaru). No brainer. Only wish it was a hatchback!! So much more utility... oh well.
Wow! Price is a pretty big deal. I think the core is definitely overpriced ( even without makeup). I think Toyota knew they would sell them so really raised the price. I'm glad you made it to team VB.
We own both a VB WRX and a GR Yaris, two very different cars. The Toyota is more fun out of the box, but far less practical and I think the WRX is much easier and cheaper to modify from a horsepower point of view.
You are absolutely right! I think more people need to realize that and decide what their goals with the vehicles are. I think they are with fantastic cars.
I wish the US got the GR Yaris 😣
I have been first on my local Toyota dealers wait-list for a GR since February of 2022 and sold my 2017 WRX shortly after. After waiting and waiting I finally jumped ship and just took delivery of a 2022 WRX Premium in black. There were multiple reasons I went WRX again instead of GR: way better price, more power potential, larger backseat for kids, and the 2.9% APR deal that Subaru had going for the WRX. My local Toyota dealer quoted me 5-9% with Tier 1 credit. 😳
Believe me, you did well! Having a GR Corolla is more like having something unusual and rare. Yes, they are funny, but you can also have that fun with the Subaru.
Yea I'd say you did well! Saving money, getting a bigger car. The brakes suck but that money you saved you can def get a few modifications and still be cheaper than the GR.
That 1.6 is maxed out, it's running more than 20 psi stock, 25 psi or so. Yes, you can run more, but so does the WRX running ~12.5 psi stock.
The 2.4 is actually tuned down on the WRX. On the potential side of things, the WRX is way more capable. Just to say the WRX is better value for power if you plan to tune the car.
Yup, that 1.6 is tuned to death from the factory.
This is very true! The Corolla is pushed pretty far. They CAN make 500whp allegedly but require a lot more changes than a WRX ( what I saw was cam and valve changes as well).
I definitely missed out on a few things. The base GR Corolla has much better brakes and OEM tires than the WRX as well. 😂
Yeah but with a 3 banger it's pushed to the limit. Wrx , sky is the limit
The other fact is that Toyota makes a better car than a Subaru. That's a well known fact. Even with that, I still can't justify paying more than MSRP for a GRC when WRXs are selling $2,000 under MSRP. You could buy 1.5 base model WRXs for the price which would give you a dedicated track WRX.
@@offworkhours I really hope Subaru starts offering a BBK from the factory and maybe mechanical LSDs aswell. Would really close the gap between the GRC and WRX. People would def pay for a performance package on a WRX.
@@molethan6138 I don't think it is far away, possibly in 2025 if they follow the same approach Toyota did with the GR86 for 2024 giving it better brakes.
So I REALLY wanted the GRC. I still do. But in reality, I won’t be able to get one. The VB has been getting the job done for now. But if I were to get the GRC, it’s gonna be the circuit edition.
I got my Super Sonic Red 2024 GR Corolla Premium with a bit of a discount. I did have to go out of state but it's possible. You just have to look for them. I was initially interested in VB but I'm not interested in modding to make it more sporty by doing lots of mods. (I used to own a 2015 WRX.) Would love to see you drive a GR corolla to see your thoughts!
That'd awesome! I think today the GRC is considerably more attainable than during launch. Then it was too many tryharda and FOTM type of people buying them. There is one GRC that I know of in STL and id love the chance to try it out.
I've bin waiting to get a corolla but the more I learn about the fa24 in the wrx the more am leaning towards it. I think the ceiling for wrx is much higher, 2.4 vs 1.6. Imo if you're staying stock it's corolla, plans on making power wrx. Wrx plus STI Trans still under base corolla. Now I just gotta hold out a little to see if they make a manual GT
I test drove both a gt and a limited and I thought the alcantara seats were much better than the recaros
He dont miss !!
Not sure you can squeeze a whole lot more power out of the GR
I'm keeping an eye out for it, just for science. I like to know what cars are capable of when I see em on the road. Already there are reports that aftermarket intakes lower the HP, but I need to confirm that.
stock block is 500whp before the head gasket starts separating. Aftermarket ECU is currently required as they blow up with the stock ecu with minimal mods. Probably a few hidden fueling tables in the stock ecu that makes it difficult to tune.
@@joeromano6549 locked like the Supra?
@@joeromano6549 they actually replaced the gasket, lowered boost and added a cam and still mad 500+ stock gasket
If anyone thinks the GR can't be tuned for much more, then you haven't seen the 500hp ones.
I traded in my 22 WRX for a trifecta packaged GRC and Im not looking back. I have owned like 6 Subarus including 3 STI and 3 WRX and the VB just was not special at all anymore.
what were you expecting? (srs)
@@SacredCASHcow I couldn't find a GRC so I figured why not go with something I am so used to and it was just boring to me. The tuning was so much better but everything else is just the same as the VA.
@@BarbWaltersMusic I'm confused. Isn't the new engine faster than even the sti
I would not trade my VB for a GR at all. Neither a VW or a Type R. The VB from the factory is very under-stressed while the others are running more boost already in their smaller engines. Not to mention the 💰 difference. The VB has a lot of performance potential waiting to be exploited.
If you are getting WRX base at msrp or possibly on discount, it is far better value for money than GRC, even at MSRP. but anything above base WRX imo GRC core with performance package is better.
I love my VB!!! Why am I paying 10k on mark up for a GR when I can use that $ in my VB!!! The aftermarket for is huge right now. Honestly the GR is just hype and dealers are taking advantage of that and marking the crap out of it. With just a CAI and tune the VB is a beast!
Have a 2017 WRX and love it, but when I heard about the Corolla GR I was so excited and considering trading it in. Base/core modes are out of the question, so when I saw the price point for the Circuit I was devastated. No sunroof? Booooo. You can take the CF roof back and give me a sunroof. I don't know, I can't justify parting with a five year old car that's still worth 20k just for the potential of something new and shiny.
I originally wanted the GRC, but Toyota really soured me on it by deliberately limiting production. This car should be like 33k starting, not 40k+ for a corolla with an economy interior. Meanwhile you can get a base WRX for 30k.
Situation is really frustrating because Subaru is actually making cheap fun cars and getting them into to hands of real enthusiasts. The GRC is a collectors item at this point, not an enthusiast car.
The GRC is not "basically an STI". the GRC AWD system is an on-demand system, versus a continuous one with a true longitudinal platform like every STI. Also, a VB STI would demolish the GRC. A tuned FA24DIT would make 350-400 whp in an STI, have much better brakes, suspension and drive train than the GRC.
Subaru has such an easy path to shut the internet up and make a killer STI that makes Toyota look silly.
I saw that the GR Corolla’s “awd “ heats up during track and turns off 😏😏😏
3:08 finally!
It’s not a conspiracy.
I’m still glad I have a VB tho.
Hahaha so you BELIEVE?!
For the money the WRX is the way to go. I have an Elantra N and chose it over the type r for the same reason. For about $1k I'm already making type r power and there's still more power potential.
Tbh I think the GR Corolla will be a better buy down the road. I know subie boys are nutting about how the new WRX is capable making 400hp. I say I’d take a Evo 9 or X for that price tbh.
Out of the dozen or so cars/trucks I've owned my '22 WRX is only the second with a four cylinder engine in it. I had enough trouble talking myself out of another Mustang when I bought the WRX last year as it is - there's no way I'm ever going to buy a car with only three cylinders and a crap-load of boost being crammed into it. Only three cylinders is a bridge too far for me to cross.
You know, I used to always think that 4cyl were just slow compared to V6 an V8. As a kid I always wanted a fast car. I'm glad that as I grew I learned more about turbo chargers and just built cars. I love my VB and I love WRX as a whole.
@@HeavyMetalWRX the power to weight ratio is more important than the engine size but at the same time- its easier to make more Hp/Tq with a larger displacement engine. Also true more cylinders will run smoother. Yes- I'm used to playing with V8s & V6s but a I'm obviously not necessarily opposed to a 4-banger on the larger side. The turbo is new to me.
Maybe I'd think different if I tried a GR. Can't buy everything.
What if you bought a base WRX and put a few thousand dollars in performance mods on it? You'd still be under the cost of a GR Corolla with a faster car. Hummmm....
SUBARU STI 💪🔥
The Cororlla🎉s diffs overheat and shut down. Everything is not cool. But I'm making more power. F-sh!t that B. VB is king.
Whaaat that's interesting. I'll have to look into this.
Just to touch on price, it's even more than you are suggesting in the video. I can drive to my local Subaru dealer RIGHT NOW and buy a base WRX for well under $28k. They have 3 for that price. And I wouldn't be surprised if there was more wiggle room. So in reality, you're looking at probably a $10k price difference.
You are absolutely right! I'm low-key jealous for how cheap people are getting 22 WRX right now 😭
@HeavyMetalWRX with a move and new job, house, etc. I wasn't in a position to place an order for the new wrx, so the silver lining is it probably saved me some $ 😅
And I'm still salty about them canning the STi. But luckily it looks like a drivetrain swap is pretty straight forward.
$10k in parts and a tune and you could have a killer 400whp+ rock solid car. Which I think is the direction I'm leaning.
@@HeavyMetalWRX I picked up my Limited 4500 below msrp
They had this debate on Flatiron. The Facts are the facts. The WRX is flat out cheaper and has more potential! The Toyota is producing too much power for such a small engine and has little to no room for more power.
I agree, get an old Toyota Corolla. With the current one, I am 100% against any markups above MSRP.
Yea that's crazy to think the engine is pushed so hard. We really got lucky with the 2.4. Pushing all that extra boost and timing makes our cars absolute monsters.
The GR Corollas are pretty cool, they just f’d up with that tiny engine. Also it’s out of my budget 😂
I thought the center diff on the wrx is limited slip?
Yeah I was confused about that too, but maybe the US specs don't get it. Australian spec man 2022 does come standard with lsd
We have a center vicious diff but no front / rear lsd.
The GRC has no chance when talking about mods. The tiny 1.6l is already on the far end of its turbo's efficiency range, pushing close to 30psi stock. There is basically no more room for added boost, a couple PSI maybe, but nothing like the wrx. Mod for mod, $ for $, the WRX DESTROYS the GRC. A few bolt ons and a tune and the WRX can make like 400whp on pump. It will take exponentially more money to do the same in the GRC, the stock turbo will struggle to make anything more than low 300whp, even with E.
So ignoring warranties, buying a base WRX for $28k, spending a few thousand on parts and a tune and you have something that will gap any GRC, even with similar mods. There is no replacement for displacement, even with forced induction.
I'm so jealous people are able to get '22 WRX for less than MSRP. Great insights here!
This thing should cost $50K.
Totally. IT'S a 3 banger? So No. I can get more out of the WRX.
Yea I think. Stock for stock the GRC has an edge but anything beyond that, especially for the price, the WRX is better.
Honestly, if i could have got a circuit edition GR at MSRP i would have done. Then put an exhaust and be done with mods.
I have a VB im happy with it, and because of all the aftermarket stuff.... Well... Im not complaining... But my wife is. 😅
Corolla is better, but nearly 10k better? Not sure about that.
You have to admit that trying to guess which one is uglier, is tough.
Hahaha this is why we never argue looks, it's always subjective! I think they both look great 😂
Ya BUT YA but - the Subaru is Ugly as sin🤮 - especially now with the (cheap as f looking) plastic wheel well thingy🤮
Even if the Sub preforms marginally better than the GR??? (which I doubt) - You still need to have a car that actually looks GReat (which the GR does in spades) & as a result take pride in your purchase.
Over the last 30 years I have considered buying a Subaru at least a half dozen times - Another vehicle ALWAYS won out & it was never about the money. (latest - in 2012 BRZ or 911 & in 2015 WRX or Fiesta ST)
The problem with your argument is it's 100% subjective. Looks aren't something that we can ever argue. If someone doesn't like the way a car looks might as well just strike it from the list without worrying about anything else. I love the GR Corolla and the way it looks but I don't think it looks better than the WRX just different. 🤷♂️
Cool looking car, but hard pass.
Yea three cylinders isn’t it look at sti mikeys numbers he hasn’t put a lot into the Corolla yet but that shit is maxed and makes no where near what the wrx does tuned
Ohhh I haven't seen Mikey do anything with the Corolla. I'll need to check it out.
