This match took place at Metamoris. Garry Tonon is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Tom deBlass and Ricardo Almeida, having earned important medals for his team (Renzo Gracie Academy - NJ/Ocean County), including titles at the IBJJF World and Pan American Championships. Known as a No-Gi specialist, Tonon earned his reputation through various accomplishments in prestigious grappling events, particularly in the submission-only format such as Metamoris, Polaris and Eddie Bravo Invitational (EBI). Garry Tonon also worked extensively with coach John Danaher at RGA - NYC, having shifted his focus to mixed martial arts (MMA) in 2018.
Garry Tonon was born on the 12th of September, 1991 in New Jersey - USA, where he initiated his grappling career during 5th grade. Wrestling being the sport he followed and competed in for 5 years, from 5th to 9th grade.
At the age of 14, one of Garry’s close friends took him to a local jiu-jitsu tournament. He became increasingly interested in the sport and decided to start attending jiu-jitsu classes at his friend’s gym. The academy was geared up for mixed martial arts (MMA), having just three grappling classes per week. Although Tonon enjoyed the training, he wanted to focus on the sporting facet of BJJ and ended up leaving after 6 months.
A few weeks later leaving the MMA gym, Garry found a leaflet for the Ocean County Jiu-Jitsu academy. OCBJJ was located near his New Jersey home, making perfect sense to pick up where he had left off. The school had just opened its doors, but Tonon fell instantly in love with the methodology of coach Tom deBlass, becoming a very devoted student while taking 2 classes per day on a regular basis.
After one year working his grappling solely at Ocean County, Tom deBlass started bringing Tonon with him to Ricardo Almeida‘s training sessions (deBlass’ coach) once per week. This symbiosis between Ocean County and Almeida’s academies paid dividends with Tonon earning his first international title at the 2008 World Championships, in the Blue Belt Juvenile Division.
While juggling between his Exercise Science course at Rutgers University and maintaining a high-level jiu-jitsu career in his late teens, Tonon earned important titles, particularly in No-Gi competitions.
Tonon maintained a solid gi focused training for the first 5 years of his grappling career, though his competitive success drove him towards no-gi. After seeing the success of Eddie Cummings in competition he sought John Danaher (Cummings’ coach) to specialize in this facet of grappling, in New York - where he gained an interest in heel hooks and lower limb attacks, this way starting the “Danaher Death Squad”. A name that started circulating thanks to Tonon and Cummings’ success in the sub only circuit.
In mid-September, 2013 long-time coaches Tom deBlass and Ricardo Almeida awarded Tonon his black belt in jiu-jitsu.
Kit Dale is an Australian grappler and a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Yuri Simões, who also worked with coaches: Bernie Jenkins and Peter De Been. Widely recognized as one of the best jiu-jitsu competitors developed in Australia, a reputation conquered while competing on the lower belt divisions of the sport - a time when Dale conquered 4 United Arab Emirates Jiu-Jitsu Federation (UAEJJF) world titles, Kit competed in important, mainstream, professional grappling events such as Polaris Invitational, Metamoris, ADCC, Copa Podio and more.
Kit Dale was born on January 24, 1986, in Melbourne, Australia, growing up in the area’s eastern suburbs.
During his formative years Dale practiced a number of athletic activities, from karate to inline hockey, as well as Australian football (Aussie rules), a sport he competed in extensively prior to jiu-jitsu.
Australian rules football is widely recognized as one of the most physical sports in the world, generally played by large individuals. Although a very athletic competitor himself, Kit lacked the physicality of some of the other players, a handicap Dale sought to overcome by learning a few grappling tricks, starting his jiu-jitsu training in 2008 with Robert Parmakovski - a man who would, years later, become Kit’s own student.
Once the highly decorated grappler, Yuri Simões moved to Australia, Kit started training with the Brazilian. The two established a strong relationship as friends and training partners, and it was Yuri who promoted Dale to black belt on June, 2013. At the time of the ceremony, Dale had just under 5 years of training, this being one of the fastest rises to the rank recorded by then.
Dale would later move to California, USA, one of jiu-jitsu’s epicenters in order to improve his grappling skills while also attempting further his acting career and starred in the film Iron Sky: The Coming Race

@@RiccardoAmmendoliaBJJ yep that is the way I herd it also. Too bad but I think bjj is still a niche market. Someone will come along and throw some cash at it one of these days. Just need like sub only and some kind of stalling deduction? And maybe more shorter rounds? Just ideas? Hope they do!

Agreed. A little too ahead of the curve, without the infrastructure, and too high of costs. Wish "they" didn't burn those bridges.

Big J metamoris didn't due well cause 99% of fights end in a draw, EBI did way better due to nothing ending in a draw.

I like Kit Dale but I have never seen him win a match. I know he has (obviously), but I've never seen one. It seems like he was in a lot of events like this several years back. Now I wonder if part of that was that he's just a memorable person? He doesn't seem to be in the events I see anymore, and hasn't been for many years now. Now I need to go do a BJJ Heroes search and see what he's been up to!

I trained under Kit as a white-belt in Melbourne around 2014-2015, and I only have nice things to say about the guy. He is a high performing, knowledgeable, and experienced grappler who has trained with the best in the game and has a lot of knowledge to pass on to his students, but most importantly, he is a fantastic and funny human being...
