Thanks for the video, managed to install Mac OS 10.11.6 El Capitan successfully on an old Mac Pro 1,1. Just a small note you have to rename the 'boot_grey.efi' file to just boot.efi otherwise the computer won't recognise it on boot up. Also the Terminal commands have to be exact as shown, got stuck for a while because of the required space at the end of the Terminal command for re-locking the boot.efi file in Core Services, was my first time in Terminal so I guess it's something you learn by trial and error. Anyway thanks again, very clear instructions. 😀👍
Man, you litteraly just saved y ass. I could not load on my El capitan partition anymore. I was terrified to lose ongoing projects and I have a big contract this week. Thanks to you, I could solve the problem in less than an hour ! Thank you !!!!
I just picked up a cheap Mac Pro 1,1 for $80 with a HD 5770 and 11Gb of ram. I used your instructions with out a hitch. Works perfect. I would like to have a quick repair if my images gets corrupt. Thanks a bunch
Didn't have any success with video # 4 copying the el Capitan disk image, in the mac pro 1.1 tried numerous times. Then tried loading onto a drive while installed in a newer mac pro running el Capitan. Found out el Capitan won't install on an erased disk. Loaded a copy of Lion, then el Capitan was able to load. Removed the drive with el Capitan installed then reinstalled the el Capitan drive into my 1.1. Followed procedures outlined in video episode 5. I've been trying multiple ways on and off for 3 weeks. Finally your episode 5 method worked. I'm amazed and can't say thanks enough. One question I can't seem to find an answer to though is can messages be made to work on this old mac pro 1.1 running el Capitan ? Been trying for a day or so and can't seem to find that question out there. I can't get messages to work on this modified 1.1 but messages do operate on all my other higher operating system, macs. If this app can't work I can survive without it but I do use the fuk out of messages, it would be nice to have it operating.
You can also relaunch Finder by pressing command option escape and clicking on Finder and then click relaunch. Where you can type in killall Finder into Terminal
This is the only method (amongst the many I've failed) that has worked for me. Currently running 10.10.5 on a MacPro 1.1 3.0ghz. I really felt up against that wall on this project. Was almost like throwing a fist of cash into a wood chipper. The thing sat for a month until I could pick up the remaining pieces of shattered hope I had for it to try again. First try.... custom black efi screen ..... NO PROBLEM! Thank you so much for posting this. I suppose the only first world problem to it is that I've to hold OPTION during boot to select the newly loaded disk. If you make it a target disk it freaks during boot and defaults to the host OS that was on the other drive. Lion? I believe. Anyhow, great work! Good find (>'.')7
Hi Greg, I managed to get a copy of WebForPC_Install_OS_X_El_Capitan.dmg but cant seem to get to those files specified to mod and complete install :-( Have I got the wrong dmg file ? Just to add: I downloaded the dmg on a windows machine then transfered to usb drive to use on my Mac Pro ? should I have downloaded the dmg directly onto my Mac ?
Can't boot Mac Mini 2,1 (mid-2007) - "No Entry" symbol Hi... I was really happy to come across your tutorial after having wasted tons of late night hours on other flaky patching methods. I had no trouble following your instructions and no issues with any of the steps, having downloaded the image and the "boot.efi" files from the links you provided. I even checked the hashes. However, when trying to boot my new image, it starts out just fine but then stops and gives me the "No Entry" sign. I've tried both the black and the grey versions of "boot.efi". When I then boot back into Lion and check the files, they remain the new ones meant to boot El Capitan. (I've checked both /System/Library/CoreServices and /usr/standalone/i386.) I tried booting in verbose mode, and the last message references the ethernet adapter... nothing more pertinent. Am I missing something?
Hi: Thanks for the work and videos. I’ve a question: What is the latest iTunes version I can install in El Capitan without breaking the hack? Can’t transfer music from iTunes to my iPhone because a newer version is required. Thanks!
Hello Hrutkay, I am having troubles typing in the commands into the terminal. When i do the chflags nouchg "file path" it comes back saying Read Only System File. I am not sure what i am doing wrong.
you have to unhide it using the first command in the description. Also yeah it could boot by just doing that, but if the OS cross checks the two, you could have issues in the future
Hi Greg, Have followed your tutorials and all is working on my Mac Pro 2,1 (1,1 upgraded). What procedure do I now follow to install the 'safe' security update dmg file that you recommended?
Question . . I have a MacPro 1,1 running Lion (10.7.5) I added 2 Xeon 3Ghz (4 cores each - 8 total) CPU's. Install went great ! I then added 16 gigs of ram (2gigs in each bay) all ram comes up and recognized - working great. I then formatted a 1Tb drive and put it in Bay 3 and loaded the El Cap (10.11.6) disk image on it recommended from links posted . .works great and I'm able to boot box in El Cap off of the drive. Only minor issue is the graphics card (Invidia GeForce 7300 GT not supporting two screens) not happy but limping by (I ordered a ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT . . be here in a few days) so here is my issue. When I updated the drive that is booting El Capitan (10.11.6) with the boot.efi file suggested . . all went great, loader changed to prove it was loaded . . . BUT !!!! my CPU's are still unrecognized and the "about this Mac" still says MacPro 1,1. No upgrade to 2,1. BUT . . It boots in El Cap !! I've checked this 6 times to make sure. So to be clear . . right now I have two boot drives in MacPro . . 1 has Lion (10.7.5) on it and it boots . . and one has El Cap (10.11.6) and it boots (but no support for the second screen and dodgy graphics card support) but NO 2,1 and CPU's unrecognized. I cleared the PR Ram as well . . . What am I doing wrong ?! DO I really need the CPU's recognized ? They come up on my activities app and TechTools diagnostics. Do I have to run the boot.efi from Lion to get it to work ?! Only thing I have not tried.
Followed all the proper steps but I'm only able to make the boot drive appear when i restart (and hold option) and not from powering up and option. When i do select the El Cap drive it boots up to about 90% and then the logo and loading bar disappears and I'm stuck with a white screen....what gives??
I run into problem restoring from image file to my spare disk drive, error I get in Disk Utility is: "Could not restore - Input/output error" so I can't actually reach this point of the upgrade yet. Any tips?
Please help if you can, I can't get this to work at all, I used my early 2011 MacBook Pro to load 10.11.6 onto a 3.5 hard drive using a usb to sata adapter, everything loaded fine. Then I took the drive with 10.11.6 and put it into my Mac Pro next to my drive with 10.6.8. I also installed an ati Radeon 2600 out of a 2008 Mac Pro and started up the computer holding down option+alt+p+r so I'd start fresh and then after I released those keys I held down the option to start with 10.6.8 HD I can see my 10.6.8 HD and my 10.11.6 HD and the 10.11.6 recovery I selected the 10.6.8 and started the computer. Once I was in I checked my startup disk under system preferences and my 10.11.6 HD didn't show up. I followed the directions in your video anyway and everything went smoothly until I tried to restart. Since my 10.11.6 drive wasn't in my startup disk I shut down the computer turned it on holding option and selected the 10.11.6 HD the computer froze for a few seconds and then loaded up the 10.6.8 drive instead. I tried moving the 10.11.6 drive to different bays I tried the efi replacement multiple times with the gray boot efi and the black efi and still no matter what i did never saw the 10.11.6 drive in my startup disk screen, I also tried booting the drive outside the computer with the usb to sata cable still no luck. I also wiped the drive again and reinstalled 10.11.6 on it again this time from a 2008 MacBook Pro I had and tried the whole thing over again and it still didn't work. I see the 10.11.6 drive on my desktop I see it in disk utility but I don't see it as an option in my startup disk menu and even after the boot efi replacement holding option and trying to start from the 10.11.6 drive that way it still doesn't work just freezes and goes back to the 10.6.8 drive, please help if you can thank you.
Thanks for your video i managed to do everything from the first try and it works fine with my ssd. I will be ordering now 2x xeon 5365 processors. I have a stock graphic card in the mac. Do you have any suggestion what card to get ? Thanks a million...
hi thank you for this! i have been able to install mac os elcapitan on my mac pro 2006. My problem is when i update my system and do this my mac os el capitan becomes corrupted? it does not want to boot.. any fix? Also when i press command R - the recovery mode doesnt work? is that normal? Thanks
Hi! So, it worked fine for me. Running on a 2006 1,1 Mac Pro. Thing is that it booted perfectly but it seems that the Wifi is no enabled, seems like the El Capitan can't see it. Any ideas?
I just did this today got yosemite installed on my 06 macpro 1,1 ,but got an issue it will only boot to yosemite with the gt 7300 installed, when i switch it out with my 5770 it loads the apple then just restarts ,The 5770 works fine in lion and is flashed using your video ,do you know why it wont boot with the 5770?
hey Greg, just so you know, on a mac pro 1.1 ,2.1 I have a wireless blue tooth and that is what was not giving me USB ports. Removed it and everything is GREAT. Thank you
+Greg Garland oh yeah I should've thought of that... I had that same issue with my MacBook when I updated to El Capitan after upgrading my Bluetooth card. I'm glad you figured it out, btw osxwifi.com 's AC Airport cards have Bluetooth 4.0 built in and it works awesome if you ever miss it Glad you got it working Greg! Sincerely Greg lol
Great Tutorial. Thanks. I used it to reinstall the bootloader after upgrading from 10.12.3 to 10.12.6. But when rebooting, it stops (not freeze, the cursor is still moving) at mid way. Any idea ?
I am in Root but when I type in the comand: chflags nouchg (click and drag boot.efi here) it comes up with read only still. Am I doing something wrong?
Is it possible to upload a bootable usb image? It is nice to know how to do it , but easyer to just download a dmg file to putt on a usb :) Thanks for the tutorial. But a bit to hard for me.
Hi Greg, I have reinstalled OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 and the USB poets are still not working. Also the blue tooth either. Don't now what to do, should i try yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion. any ideas. Thanks Greg Garland
That's interesting... yeah you can try Yosemite, the boot.efi is here: forums.macrumors.com/threads/2006-2007-mac-pro-1-1-2-1-and-os-x-yosemite.1740775/page-65#post-20283936 But if you want to keep troubleshooting El Capitan see if someone here can help you : forums.macrumors.com/threads/2006-2007-mac-pro-1-1-2-1-and-os-x-el-capitan.1890435/
I have been trying for months now to have this work. Close but no cigar. Is there a way i can get the installer on a thumb drive? Would appreciate that dearly. I installed a Video board Model [ NVIDIA GeForce 00 GT 512 MB] into the machine.
Thanks Greg. I used the disk image and updated the EFI.boot files and now I'm pleased to have El cap working on my mac pro 1,1. However, when I rebooted using the El Cap drive, my system just hung so I powered off and powered back on and it booted fine into El Cap - any ideas what might have caused this? Also, I now have Safari 9.1.2 and no means of updating to version 11 - do you have any suggestions? Thanks again for your help.
Thanks for your reply, Greg. OK, I've removed the 512 mb dimms and still have Safari 9.1.2. Do I have to repeat the restore and EFI process to get Safari 11?
I installed Mac OS 10.11.6 it on my Mac Pro 1,1 with 4 GB of ram (4x1 GB) works fine in El Capitan only problem I had when I foolishly tried to do a software update via the system information app. for some reason it went into restart mode saying their was a problem, I just shut the computer down and re-booted and it was fine again.
Do you have Safari 11 installed on another computer? Because you can usually just copy most of Apple's applications from an existing Applications folder and they should work as long as the apps are supported on your version of OS.
Firstly Greg I would like to thank you. Your instructions on installation are simple and clear unlike many of the others out there regarding the boot.efi issue with 32 bit Macs. I do have a couple of questions though as I'm having a few problems: In your video it appears you already have El Capitan installed before you do the efi procedure, how did you do this without your mac checking for compatibility? I have a 1.1 and I'm trying to install Yosemite (10.10.5)(bought from Amazon) from a usb drive and irrespective of the method (yours, SFOTT, Pikers pre patched) the drive doesn't show up in Startup Manager but does in Finder, if I try to install (onto a separate blank 500gb drive) when in Lion it runs the compatibility check and halts the process. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
yeah ep 4 I installed el capitan... I did the target disk way in ep 6 If you need any help lemme know sorry I missed this comment, I dunno how it didn't notify me on it.
Hi Greg, I really wanted to come back with good news after watching episode 4 but alas no so I think it is the component itself - my Mac Pro for info's sake is a 1.1, 3ghz, Xeon quad core with a Radeon HD 3770 a nice little machine that I really don't to scrap. The Yosemite usb that I bought from Amazon is just the installer (10.10.5) and a Utilities folder - no DMG The closest I came was with an "obtained" version 10.10.3 (restored as OSX Base System but not installed as ep 4 on the drive) and the black/white boot efi: It flashed up on the screen for a couple of seconds then reverted to the standard grey apple logo but then just sat there with no indicator doing nothing. Any other obtained versions (Yosemite or El Cap) are just installers and not proper DMG's. So that's me scratching my head wondering where to go next ! :-? (Can't do Target mode as nobody near me has an Apple) Also Piker says verify the efi's upon download but when entering the Terminal command the response is no such file or directory. If I can find a way I shall return with the joyous news!! Cheers Bud.
Greg got there in the end it was the dmg towards which spirit pointed me in the right direction but wouldn't have got there without your tutorials so amny thanks, have a good weekend.
Hi, will this tutorial work on iMac 5.1 2006 with OS X Lion 4GB RAM? I copied El Capitan to the partition where Windows 2000 was and El Capitan boots to the time zone settings, but neither the mouse nor the keyboard works. Anyone have any advice ? Thanks for the reply.
I found your channel very educative. I would appreciate if you could give me where to download Mac OS installation disk. I have Mac Pro 1.1 2006 model with a formatted new disk. Thanks
Instaead of unlock the boot.efi file i drag n drop the old boot.efi to the trash bin and then I drag n drop the new boot.efi to the os x folder. Also even if lock the new boot.efi there references say that you dont benefit something.
I agree, I reuploaded the video with the locking part (I'm sure you can tell lol) because it helped with Yosemite and kept it from replacing the file. But in El Capitan it doesn't seem to make a difference. Also with out the unlocking, some older OS Xes don't seem to want to delete the file while it's locked.
Hrutkay Mods Frankly you are right. Some old OS X doesn't allow you to delete without unlock. But the 99% of the users will do this either at Yosemite or El capitan.
I just updated to 10.11.6, and the boot.efi file stayed intact. Locking the file might still be the way to go, also I have SIP disabled, that might have helped too
Hey greg nice tutorial! I have a mac pro 2.1 12gb ram, I tried Installing el capitan on it with gt 710 1gb. I hear a Chime but there is no display i tried hdmi and dvi but still no success
Make sure you’re running at least 2 GB dimm modules remove every PCI card but the video card itself and maybe try it between different slots and see what happens… unless it’s a 32bit efi Mac flashed it may take a few minutes for the screen to come on while booting
Greg tell me please if your El capitan Mac pro is reliable. I have kernel panics with the reason to be the cpu cores. According to me research the only possibly solution is to put more ram ( I have just 4 gb) or to change the memory modules with brand new and with bigger ammount of ram. Have you kernel panics?
Yes in fact it was basically the same error. The errors would spit out a fault in CPU B. It turned out that the memory controller for Ram Slot Riser A was faulty and giving a false negative for CPU B. Since I removed Riser A completely, no more panics, though I'm stuck with 4 ram slots now instead of 8, I run 16GB of ram happily and I learned with the right type of 8GB dimms, I can go to 32GB with just using Riser B's 4 slots. It's totally reliable now
Hrutkay Mods Because i have see every video of your series i already knew about your problem. BUT it is almost impossible to have the same exactly problem. A lot of people have kernel panics and they write to forums that the solution is the upgrade of the ram. El Capitan at idle uses about 3.6 GB ram. After i show you tested the memory risers on windows. So your problem is 100% of the riser. But mine kernel panics i hope according the references is because i have small amount of RAM. (4 GB). Maybe you can go to 32 GB ram with just memory riser B because i show your video a guy confirm 64 gb on a mac 2.1. But generally there are references from guys with over 16 gb which confirm that the mac pro 1.1 & 2.1 work like a charm. But also there are other references from guys with less memory complain about kernel panics.
makes sense, I know El Capitan is a memory hog, My MacBook came with 2GB and I upgraded it to 6GB... El Capitan leaves it idling between 2.5 and 3.5GB. You cna always try more ram and see if it helps I have 4 512MB, 2 1GB, 2 2GB, and 4 4GB sticks just laying around if you need any lol.
I’m going to be honest with you I wouldn’t... Mountain lion maybe Mavericks is the highest you should go... El Capitan would have no GPU acceleration and run like crap
Hey there, Does it matter if it's 1,1 to get the boot screen with GT120 512mb GPU card Or Do I have to flash it to 2,1 first to see the boot screen? I've already replaced the boot.efi in both locations.
neither work with a factory GT120, they're 64bit EFI only. If you want a supported factory card try the HD 2600XT or you could get a macvidcards GT120 for 1,1/2,1
Hello I cant see my hard drive with the macosx el capitan installed on it I created a partition inside an old hard drive already installed in my mac pro I followed all the steps but i cant get to see the hard drive on startup disk What could be the problem?
are we talking in the EFI boot menu or the startup disk options in settings? it sometimes won't show in the EFI boot menu until after the first boot into it. If you're talking about the startup disk options, try to reboot a few time, there's a possibility the install might be corrupted though
Hrutkay Mods it's on the startup disk menu I will try to delete the partition and start all over again Maybe try with another image copy of el capitan Will reply when i have more news on it Thanks again
Okay, so after a lot of trouble and stuff I finally got it all to work... first I lost finder so I did it all over again.... Now it's functioning, only after some time the mac freezes and reboots... what is this related to? This wasn't happening when OSX Lion was on it. Could this be ram or CPU related? Mac Pro 1.1 5GB Ram 2 X Intel Xeon Dualcore 3GHz Geforce GTX 760 2GB Jetstream. The cpu seems to be on a pretty heavy load when only streaming youtube in 4K. Can this be the cause, and will upgrading to Xeon x5355 (dual Quad core CPU's) help? I hope you can help me out
i have on my mac pro 2.1 mac os 10.5.8 and i used your el capitan drive image and followed your instructions and changed both boot.efi but my mac os not show me the el capitan ssd under startvolume...:-( what can i do?
Zack. Do you have a Bluetooth module? Remove it and see what happens? Another viewer had the USB port problem and that was the fix... as for the restarts, see if episode 29 applies to you
Hello Hrutkay Mods and the community here! Great discussion going on here. I am a biggest fan! A quick question - after following this instruction, all run smooth but there was no boot screen. In any possible ways I tried with GPU: GT120, GTX 680, Radeon 5770, none of them gave access to boot screen. Furthermore, I replaced boot.efi in recovery HD and could not boot into the recovery with CMD + R. Suppose to see boot screen and should be able to boot into recovery HD after boot.eft replaced, r? Any thoughts? My system: MP 2,1| El Capitan 10.11.6 (of course)| SIP disabled
+Shane Tek I just need to make sure, the GPUs you are trying are already EFI flashed correct? The CMD+R may or my not work it really depends which one the Mac decides that it wants to go into, if it even wants to go into one... I had problems doing that, that's where the boot menu comes in handy… Though eventually I did get to work I don't have much of a clue how I did it lol. Anyway yes you should be able see the boot screen if your card is already flashed... If possible, we can talk in more detail on Facebook if you would like? And thank you for all your support ;) it truly means a lot :D
+Hrutkay Mods You are right on! Those cards are not flashed, and have build-in OS drivers for boot menu support, that I am reasonably convinced. My understanding is that only Mac EFI flashed cards from Macvidcards are bootscreen-capable for MP1,1&2,1 - not even the official cards such as GT120 and 5770. By that I mean the cards have to be flashed with Mac 32-bit EFI as well. Because I tried with Quadro 7500GT that came with Mac Pro2,1 and worked like a charm! WRT the ability to boot into the Recovery HD. I was able to pull it off. My contribution to +Hrutkay Mods's community, here is how: After done with RUclips instruction, in El Capitan go to Terminal and type: $ diskutil list Then you will see as in the following: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - /dev/disk2 (internal, physical): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: GUID_partition_scheme *128.0 GB disk2 1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk2s1 2: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 127.2 GB disk2s2 3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk2s3 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Out of IDENTIFIER list, select the corresponding Recovery HD, in this case "disk2s3" $ diskutil mount /dev/disk2s3 Then the Recovery HD will be mounted in the Finder. You'll now have to browse to com.apple.recovery.boot>boot.efi The "unlocking and locking" instruction is the same as in the above video:- Unlock the file: $ sudo chflags nouchg /Volumes/Recovery\ HD/com.apple.recovery.boot/boot.efi Replace it with the one you use from github.com/Piker-Alpha/macosxbootloader, then lock the file and unmount: $ sudo chflags uchg /Volumes/Recovery\ HD/com.apple.recovery.boot/boot.efi $ diskutil unmount /dev/disk2s3 Then shut down and restart pressing and holding CMD+R as usual. Voila!
+Shane Tek very cool, yeah recovery drive was covered I think in ep7? Can't remember, it's been a while since I filmed it lol. Btw the GT120 does have to be flashed for 32bit support, but the Apple 5770 works totally fine stock. My pro originally came with one as an upgraded card ;)
+Hrutkay Mods You are right on again! Yes Radeon 5770 does work on MP 2,1 albeit with Mac 32bit EFI. Amazing what 5770 can do. Definitely not GT120 but it works on all cMPs (2008-2012). Additionally, I installed CaptainPikeFix for capability to install future El Cap update so that I don't have to repeat boot.efi install process all over again. No new update from Apple since last December update (2016-003) so update-proof or not has yet to discover but I see another boot script file in usr>standalone>i386. It seems to function certainly for rewriting the boot.efi in case Apple removed it. It was quite an easy process - download, open and install. But SIP has to remain disable - which lead to a little concern for OS security aspect. There is another method called Boot64 (v.3 now) - SIP can remain enable but MP needs 12GB of RAM. I haven't tried it yet. Envy such a great work you are doing here! I plan to fit similar channel into my routine. It feels as though it's one of those things - "Leave this world a little better than you found it" lol :)) I will catch up to your last episode this weekend! Big thanks for doing this for all of us out there.
Hello Greg, My USB ports still don't work. Could it be that I still have the stock CPU's Not the Quad Cores. I have 2x3 GHz Dual cores, and 20 GB of ram, ATi Radeon hd 5770
Hi Greg, I redid installation 4 times and still no USB. Could it be that i have Lion HD still in the macpro. Or could it be a blue tooth adaptor or something else. I don't have a Facebook account. Thank You Greg G
Ola, depois que fiz todos os passos, eu consegui instalar e tudo, baixei apps, mas teve uma atualização do sistema, e logo depois de atualizar ele nao abre mais o sistema. poderia me ajudar?
ON MY PC, A MAC 1.1, DOES NOT WORK, RESTART AFTER THE APPLE. I THINK THAT THE PROBLEM, IS FROM THE VERSION OF THE INSTALLER, IS MODIFIED AT EVERY LAPSE OF TIME, AND HAS ALREADY DOWNLOADED 5 VERCIONES AND NO WORKS, SOMEONE MAY GO UP A VERSION THAT IF IT WORKS AND SHARES.
UPDATE 2020 - this worked fine for a fresh install 10.11.6, I then went to app store to do updates and did all the tweaky final updates still visible in the app store, one being some final security update - this seemed to break the booting of EL capitan? even after redoing the same boot efi stuff again, gets stuck in an early boot loop, so had to boot to second boot drive, i suspect thats what clobbered the booting anyway, Im gonna test a fresh install and 10.11.6 on that partition and redoing the boot efi hack , I suspect that the final security update nobbles it as such I don't think we can do that final security update, sadly i didn't note its name, I'm hoping a reinstall will resolve it, got too ambitious. I wanted no updates available in app store, should have just hidden that final security update.
Mac 2,1: The first time I tried it and it worked. However, when I had it updated it would boot anymore. Went back to previous os to change boot.efi the same way again but it still loads the black loading bar for a second before restarting again and again. Also, I can never see the usr folder despite doing the command to see all hidden folders. UPDATE: apparently not seeing the other folders is due to a bad install? Anyway, I repartitioned the drive after erasing everything and suddenly all the folders were available including the "usr" folder. Fixed the boot.efi files in both folders and now everything is running smoothly (for now). After restarting multiple times it still seems to work, cant thank you enough.
hi just wanted to know did u manage to update el capitan? I am having the same problem as you. Lastly my command - R recovery boot does not work? is yours fully working? Thanks for your help!
@@HideOnBushOwO if you read my update (last section of my comment) I essentially erased the hard drive & re-partitioned it, then followed instructions again. I used a new hard drive instead of the old one I found in it because these machines are so old it's about that time for the drives to start failing anyway. Never ended up using the machine for anything. I now use it as my night stand :)
@@kennethhudgins1369 thank you for your reply i am using a new ssd. So once el cap is installed i can go to system preference and press update? then if it doesnt boot just re do the video again is that correct? thank you for your help anf ast reply considering this is 3 years old lol!
@@HideOnBushOwO I honestly don't remember. I think k there was something wrong with my original os x install so I had to order a cd install disk from ebay to reinstall it properly, then follow the instructions in the video.
@@HideOnBushOwOso it's been awhile, but if you go look at my RUclips channel , scroll through my videos until you find "vlog: 11" and look at the video description (don't bother watching the video) I put the links to the 2 videos in the description under my video since it was a 2 step process.
Okay… I don’t know if I did that or not this video is like five years old and you’re the first person to say that lol. so thank you for the correction if it was wrong. It apparently has worked if it was wrong 🤷🏻♂️
@@HrutkayMods Thanks for the reply, I guess this method won't work on my 2006 6,1 Imac. I do have a 2,1 pro that I was using as a door stop... guess I'll fire it up an d try your method on it.
FEEDBACK: hello hrukay, thanks for your great video, i've used your mod to install el capitan on my mac pro 1.1 updated to 2.1 with 2x3.0ghz quad processor, and i've everything but the graphic card, the default on 7300 only has 5mo de ram, and the 4500 quadro only has 2mo ram in the new system, what should i do to use them correctly please? btw, i'm in france, and with using a french location and language setup on the el capitan start up, the system crash after enter the desktop, and the system restart, but if i use US setup, everything was fine but the graphic card, just a message feedback for you, thank your for your time and your great work. daniel
and each time i want to install the update from app center, the system crash on the have way during the installation, (not the download part, but when the installation bar appears, and restart before it goes to the end. )
if you ask ram of system, i've 6go, and i'm waiting maybe tomorrow the deliver of new 32go, if you ask the video ram identified by the el capitan on updated 1.1, the 7300 has 5mo detected, and the quadro 4500 has 2mo detected.
now i've upgrade to 32go ram on my macpro, but nothing has changed on graphic card, how do you guys utilise your video card normally without any modification ? do you have a solution pls? thanks you so much.
Hi all. I need some help. I upgraded my Mac Pro 1,1 to 2,1 using these videos. Now, I need to roll it back to Mac 10.7 for work. Unfortunately, I can't reboot into recovery... At all. Nothing will do. Can some one help me? I would like to roll back El Capitan on this machine to Lion.
Rolling back it’s not really a thing on a Mac… you can do it in windows but unless you have a time machine backup you can’t really do it on a Mac. That’s why I always suggest having both and dual booting. You can get a copy of the lion installer offline now. I would suggest getting another hard drive and reinstalling lion then The only thing you can really do is just click and drag files and applications over and hope they work
90% of what you show here works except this chflags nouchg (click and drag boot.efi here) the boot.efi file only exist if I 'ls -axl boot.efi' - it shows -rw--r--r-- but if I try to chmod in the folder I get operation not permitted, your method returns 'read only filesystem. HEELLPP
Anyone know if the Boot.efi patched OS intended for 32 Bit machines will work in 64 bit machines if HD transferred later - from a 1,1 or 2,1 to a 3,1? Or will you have to re-install the original boot.efi file?
@@HrutkayMods i try this but i did not work i have two mac pro 2006 and 2008 same issue redlight CPU for 2006 i fix it by Moving pins of CPU in thier place but 2008 won't anyway thanks for halping
You’re welcome
Man, you litteraly just saved y ass. I could not load on my El capitan partition anymore. I was terrified to lose ongoing projects and I have a big contract this week. Thanks to you, I could solve the problem in less than an hour ! Thank you !!!!
Glad it helped man
I just picked up a cheap Mac Pro 1,1 for $80 with a HD 5770 and 11Gb of ram.
Found out
el Capitan won't install on an erased disk.
Atta boy Greg, worked a treat, well explained, easy to follow as always with you. many thanks
Thank you Greg...For all your top tutorials and also for the El Capitan image disk- Everything works great even with my ATI 5770 HD....
I just did mine and it works, thank you. Just took some time transferring my old files to El Capitan.
Hey Greg, update, I parted with my 2,1 and now have a 3,1- 32GB APFS patch & SSD running Monterey (OCLP) and Windows 10.
That’s awesome Nick bet she runs great 😃
Thank you Greg ! that works perfectly ! My old Mac Pro has reborned !
You’re welcome
Can't boot Mac Mini 2,1 (mid-2007) - "No Entry" symbol
Hi...
(I've checked both /System/Library/CoreServices and /usr/standalone/i386.)
I tried booting in verbose mode, and the last message references the ethernet adapter... nothing more pertinent.
Am I missing something?
it's a Mac Pro only image sadly
Hi: Thanks for the work and videos. I’ve a question: What is the latest iTunes version I can install in El Capitan
without breaking the hack? Can’t transfer music from iTunes to my iPhone because a newer version is required. Thanks!
Hello Hrutkay,
I am having troubles typing in the commands into the terminal. When i do the chflags nouchg "file path" it comes back saying Read Only System File. I am not sure what i am doing wrong.
The com.apple.cinder showallfiles command is saying could not write domain everytime i type it in
com.apple.finder might be why
USB 3.0 on Mac Pro 1.1 working perfectly.
VIA VL805 4 Port
I installed using Kext Utility
and kext RehabMan-Generic-USB3-2015-1215
The El Capitan disk does not show up in the Startup Disk selection. How do I fix this?
my usr folder on my yosemite drive is hidden? but my updated Yosemite booted by just replacing the first boot file.
you have to unhide it using the first command in the description.
2,1 has nothing to do with the boot.efi you need to follow episode 17
hi there followed all your steps but I can not find usr folder please help
it's a hidden folder, it's on there you can even use the shortcut /usr to get to it
Followed all the proper steps but I'm only able to make the boot drive appear when i restart (and hold option) and not from powering up and option.
Thanks
yeah don't update past 2017-005
Flashed? The Mac or card?… uhh check all power connections on the card and reseat it and see
hey Greg, just so you know, on a mac pro 1.1 ,2.1 I have a wireless blue tooth and that is what was not giving me USB ports. Removed it and everything is GREAT. Thank you
+Greg Garland oh yeah I should've thought of that... I had that same issue with my MacBook when I updated to El Capitan after upgrading my Bluetooth card.
I'm glad you figured it out, btw osxwifi.com 's AC Airport cards have Bluetooth 4.0 built in and it works awesome if you ever miss it
Glad you got it working Greg!
Sincerely
Greg lol
I have a Mac Pro 1,1 that is running El Capitan but I want to use Mavericks now. Is there a way to do the downgrade? Thanks!
I would just like to add my thanks excellent tutorial AND WORK.
Best Wishes. Thank you.
Glad it helped
Thanks Greg, just booted my 2007 2,1 (netkas) into El Capitan 10.11.6. Great stuff, do wonder if it can be pushed higher???
I wish :/
Great Tutorial. Thanks.
I used it to reinstall the bootloader after upgrading from 10.12.3 to 10.12.6. But when rebooting, it stops (not freeze, the cursor is still moving) at mid way. Any idea ?
Thank you. This solved an amazingly annoying issue I was having.
I am in Root but when I type in the comand: chflags nouchg (click and drag boot.efi here) it comes up with read only still. Am I doing something wrong?
Just use the image in episode 32 and save the pain
greg, will this work with newer versions of mac os? like mac os high sierra or mojave?
Nope no CPU support for them
Is it possible to upload a bootable usb image?
It is nice to know how to do it , but easyer to just download a dmg file to putt on a usb :)
Thanks for the tutorial. But a bit to hard for me.
I have a Mac pro 1186 w/ 10.11.6 el cap. I wish to install Mojave or higher so I can use Logic10 I’m w/ Logic 9 at the moment is there any hope
Not so far sadly

hello dude, nice job. how did u fix the initial boot with letters like a pc, is a ktext or something to boot like an "un tunned mac" Lol. thnks.
Hi Greg, I have reinstalled OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 and the USB poets are still not working. Also the blue tooth either. Don't now what to do, should i try yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion. any ideas. Thanks Greg Garland
That's interesting... yeah you can try Yosemite, the boot.efi is here: forums.macrumors.com/threads/2006-2007-mac-pro-1-1-2-1-and-os-x-yosemite.1740775/page-65#post-20283936

I have been trying for months now to have this work. Close but no cigar. Is there a way i can get the installer on a thumb drive? Would appreciate that dearly. I installed a Video board Model [ NVIDIA GeForce 00 GT 512 MB] into the machine.
Garth take a look at at episode 32 ;)
Thanks Greg. I used the disk image and updated the EFI.boot files and now I'm pleased to have El cap working on my mac pro 1,1. However, when I rebooted using the El Cap drive, my system just hung so I powered off and powered back on and it booted fine into El Cap - any ideas what might have caused this? Also, I now have Safari 9.1.2 and no means of updating to version 11 - do you have any suggestions? Thanks again for your help.
Check your ram, you can’t run 512MB or 1GB modules... only 2GB or higher modules
I do have a couple of questions though as I'm having a few problems:
In your video it appears you already have El Capitan installed before you do the efi procedure, how did you do this without your mac checking for compatibility? I have a 1.1 and I'm trying to install Yosemite (10.10.5)(bought from Amazon) from a usb drive and irrespective of the method (yours, SFOTT, Pikers pre patched) the drive doesn't show up in Startup Manager but does in Finder, if I try to install (onto a separate blank 500gb drive) when in Lion it runs the compatibility check and halts the process. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
yeah ep 4 I installed el capitan... I did the target disk way in ep 6
If you need any help lemme know
sorry I missed this comment, I dunno how it didn't notify me on it.
+Tobes1100 take a look at ep.32 that might be right up your alley ;)
+Tobes1100 very happy it worked out for you :) you're quite welcome
Hi, will this tutorial work on iMac 5.1 2006 with OS X Lion 4GB RAM? I copied El Capitan to the partition where Windows 2000 was and El Capitan boots to the time zone settings, but neither the mouse nor the keyboard works. Anyone have any advice ? Thanks for the reply.
for Mac Pro only... MacPostFactor might help but I doubt it
MacPostFactor doesn’t work anymore😢
I found your channel very educative. I would appreciate if you could give me where to download Mac OS installation disk. I have Mac Pro 1.1 2006 model with a formatted new disk. Thanks
take a look at ep 32 ;)
Hi , it still workd With high sierra catalina and new mac os ?
No, sorry CPU is not supported in those El Capitan was the very last one… you can, however still run Windows 10 and even hacked windows 11 on it
Instaead of unlock the boot.efi file i drag n drop the old boot.efi to the trash bin and then I drag n drop the new boot.efi to the os x folder.
True, I just did it in Lion so if anything bad happened I was still on a natively supported OS
I just updated to 10.11.6, and the boot.efi file stayed intact. Locking the file might still be the way to go, also I have SIP disabled, that might have helped too
yes greg i already knew it. I had it done too. I have sip enabled so it not the sip.
if you leave sip enabled no need for repair permisions
Hey greg nice tutorial! I have a mac pro 2.1 12gb ram, I tried Installing el capitan on it with gt 710 1gb. I hear a Chime but there is no display i tried hdmi and dvi but still no success
It should in theory work
Make sure you’re running at least 2 GB dimm modules remove every PCI card but the video card itself and maybe try it between different slots and see what happens… unless it’s a 32bit efi Mac flashed it may take a few minutes for the screen to come on while booting
@@HrutkayMods The mac pro previously has an 2 quadcore intel xeon cpu and quadro fx 5600
You cna always try more ram and see if it helps I have 4 512MB, 2 1GB, 2 2GB, and 4 4GB sticks just laying around if you need any lol.
with 32 gb is really Rock Solid. I tried it and i stressed the machine till the limits and works perfect. Just for feedback
Glad to hear it! :D
My imac 6,1 late 2006 with upgraded RAM 4 GB, 500 GB SSD and working on Mac os 10.7.5 LION. HOW TO UPGRADE the OS to El Capitan?
I’m going to be honest with you I wouldn’t... Mountain lion maybe Mavericks is the highest you should go... El Capitan would have no GPU acceleration and run like crap
Mac pro 1.1 to 2.1 efi ERROR 5530 several claim to fix this but not found the work yet can you help me please……
Bill Rilea I managed to fix
Hey there,
Does it matter if it's 1,1 to get the boot screen with GT120 512mb GPU card Or Do I have to flash it to 2,1 first to see the boot screen?
I've already replaced the boot.efi in both locations.
neither work with a factory GT120, they're 64bit EFI only. If you want a supported factory card try the HD 2600XT or you could get a macvidcards GT120 for 1,1/2,1
Hello
I cant see my hard drive with the macosx el capitan installed on it
I created a partition inside an old hard drive already installed in my mac pro
I followed all the steps but i cant get to see the hard drive on startup disk
What could be the problem?
are we talking in the EFI boot menu or the startup disk options in settings? it sometimes won't show in the EFI boot menu until after the first boot into it. If you're talking about the startup disk options, try to reboot a few time, there's a possibility the install might be corrupted though
Hrutkay Mods it's on the startup disk menu
I will try to delete the partition and start all over again
Maybe try with another image copy of el capitan
Will reply when i have more news on it
Thanks again
Hi Greg, After entering chflags nochg and draging the bootefi. i hit enter and it says it is read only. will not unlock. Please Help
Did you do "sudo bash" first? sounds like a root admin issue... if not see if this helps www.macinstruct.com/node/415
Hi Greg, I got it up and running. The only thing is none of my usb ports work. I did pram and smc no good . Please Help
Greg Garland
sounds like a bad install of OS X, try reinstalling it and see if that works
I did this on My Macbook Pro 2,2 and keyboard, trackpad and USB are not working.
Any solutions?
Not for MacBook Pro for Mac Pro... that would be why... you need MacPostFactor
Mac Pro 1.1
5GB Ram
2 X Intel Xeon Dualcore 3GHz
Geforce GTX 760 2GB Jetstream.
The cpu seems to be on a pretty heavy load when only streaming youtube in 4K. Can this be the cause, and will upgrading to Xeon x5355 (dual Quad core CPU's) help?
I hope you can help me out
see episode 29... sounds like that problem ;)
i have on my mac pro 2.1 mac os 10.5.8 and i used your el capitan drive image and followed your instructions and changed both boot.efi but my mac os not show me the el capitan ssd under startvolume...:-( what can i do?
You used my image?... don’t touch it just try restoring it over to the drive again and try booting it... it is presetup to just work
yes i used your image.....but i can boot from it....without editing die boot.efi und with aditing
my os do not show me the ssd with el capitan
Yes you don’t have to edit anything it just works
Hrutkay Mods i tried it another time without changing everything, but i can’t see the partition of el capitan under startvolume
I have a problem where my USB ports don't work and my computer will restart after a little bit. What should I do?
I used the DMG file that you provided in episode 4.
My contribution to +Hrutkay Mods's community, here is how:
After done with RUclips instruction, in El Capitan go to Terminal and type:
$ diskutil list
Then you will see as in the following:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
/dev/disk2 (internal, physical):
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: GUID_partition_scheme *128.0 GB disk2
1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk2s1
2: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 127.2 GB disk2s2
3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk2s3
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Out of IDENTIFIER list, select the corresponding Recovery HD, in this case "disk2s3"
$ diskutil mount /dev/disk2s3
Then the Recovery HD will be mounted in the Finder. You'll now have to browse to com.apple.recovery.boot>boot.efi
The "unlocking and locking" instruction is the same as in the above video:-
Unlock the file:
$ sudo chflags nouchg /Volumes/Recovery\ HD/com.apple.recovery.boot/boot.efi
Replace it with the one you use from github.com/Piker-Alpha/macosxbootloader, then lock the file and unmount:
$ sudo chflags uchg /Volumes/Recovery\ HD/com.apple.recovery.boot/boot.efi
$ diskutil unmount /dev/disk2s3
Then shut down and restart pressing and holding CMD+R as usual.
Thank you, very well explained!!!
Sorry Greg, been away, PM me and I'll send you my email. There has to be something we can do
I found the problem
+Greg Garland that's great to hear! it wasn't the Bluetooth?
ON MY PC, A MAC 1.1, DOES NOT WORK, RESTART AFTER THE APPLE.
I THINK THAT THE PROBLEM, IS FROM THE VERSION OF THE INSTALLER, IS MODIFIED AT EVERY LAPSE OF TIME, AND HAS ALREADY DOWNLOADED 5 VERCIONES AND NO WORKS, SOMEONE MAY GO UP A VERSION THAT IF IT WORKS AND SHARES.
If you can, message me on facebook and I can help you get a working copy... or check out episode 32 when it comes out later today
Check the description and also Check out season two towards the end 👍
@@HideOnBushOwOso it's been awhile, but if you go look at my RUclips channel , scroll through my videos until you find "vlog: 11" and look at the video description (don't bother watching the video) I put the links to the 2 videos in the description under my video since it was a 2 step process.
your command to show hidden files is INCORRECT. rather than YES you need to write TRUE
Yeah it’s missing the extensions for USB for that system they do make a patcher for it though
FEEDBACK: hello hrukay, thanks for your great video, i've used your mod to install el capitan on my mac pro 1.1 updated to 2.1 with 2x3.0ghz quad processor, and i've everything but the graphic card, the default on 7300 only has 5mo de ram, and the 4500 quadro only has 2mo ram in the new system, what should i do to use them correctly please? btw, i'm in france, and with using a french location and language setup on the el capitan start up, the system crash after enter the desktop, and the system restart, but if i use US setup, everything was fine but the graphic card, just a message feedback for you, thank your for your time and your great work. daniel
and each time i want to install the update from app center, the system crash on the have way during the installation, (not the download part, but when the installation bar appears, and restart before it goes to the end. )
+INVEST A PARIS so how much ram do you have again?
if you ask ram of system, i've 6go, and i'm waiting maybe tomorrow the deliver of new 32go, if you ask the video ram identified by the el capitan on updated 1.1, the 7300 has 5mo detected, and the quadro 4500 has 2mo detected.
now i've upgrade to 32go ram on my macpro, but nothing has changed on graphic card, how do you guys utilise your video card normally without any modification ? do you have a solution pls? thanks you so much.
You must have installed the OSX 10.11.6 on another computer. You should state that.
I cover that in another video
Thanks for this. Appreciated.
you're quite welcome :)
You are a legend.
HEELLPP
Does this work with MacBook 2.1?
No, it’ll boot but no drivers including USB so it’d be useless
my boot.efi file doesnt unlock help
Recheck your commands
Anyone know if the Boot.efi patched OS intended for 32 Bit machines will work in 64 bit machines if HD transferred later - from a 1,1 or 2,1 to a 3,1? Or will you have to re-install the original boot.efi file?
Best explaing it works all Time just want vidéo explaing red light diagnostic led CPU erreur how it fix thanks hrutkay mods from Algérie
When mine did that that’s because one of my ram tray controllers had gone bad
@@HrutkayMods i try this but i did not work i have two mac pro 2006 and 2008 same issue redlight CPU for 2006 i fix it by Moving pins of CPU in thier place but 2008 won't anyway thanks for halping
DID NOT WORK.... What is it he says in Ep#32, "100% guarantee". Well , that's not true.
Should work fine... I dunno why you are commenting on this video though? Episode 32 doesn’t need the boot.efi file
