A huge THANK YOU for making this easy to follow guide. Apart from the Netkas link being broken (I found the Firmware update tool somewhere else) this guide worked extremely well.
Just in case anyone's just bought a 1,1 which was running an older OS: If you are running e.g. 10.4 Tiger, the Mac Pro 2006-2007 Firmware Tool WILL NOT RUN. I had to upgrade to Snow Leopard and then it all worked like a charm. Many thanks @RetroGamerVX for the otherwise very comprehensive video
You just type in the command for downgrade instead of upgrade at the end, didn't think it worthy of a separate video although could. More tutorials on upgrades coming soon.
How did you upgrade to Snow Leopard? My Mac Pro 1,1 is on 10.4.11 and I'm not sure how to update. Wikipedia says I can update to 10.7 without any patches.
Thats right. The macPro 1,1 has got a 32bit firmware like my Imac 5,1 - and MacOs10.7 ist the last compatible MacOS you can install. But there ist a way you can Install a modern 64bit linux, thanks to Matt Gradient. Check this out
You're a damn wizard Harry!! I've been fighting my 2006 MPC 1,1 for days with different patches and whatnot trying to get it to upgrade to 2,1, with no success. This worked like a champ!! Thank you sir!😄
@@RetroGamerVX Ya anything to help in a work around to update mac osx snow leopard from 10.6.8 to Yosimite 10.10 would be much appreciated. I have run into a wall and nothing on RUclips or google has helped. I've tried with my Yosimite DVD and using a download from apple. Both methods says I can't update. The DVD says I have to download from Apple and stops. When I use the apple download I get an alert that I can't install it on my machine. Others who update to El Capitain use a terminal command, "date" to enter the date in a number string > reboot and then it installs ok from that. That doesn't work for me. I'm thinking Apple has thrown out another obstacle in the updates to prevent us from doing that so we will upgrade our hardware etc to keep us at their mercy. Pure deception! The reason why we need good people like you to provide solutions as our 2006 mac pro's work just fine if we have the latest solutions. Your help and from others is much appreciated.
Confirmed to work in 2023 still, but on the one I was updating, the CD drive never ejected, instead I got the apple logo with progress bar straight off, no white screen with cd-tray. Still completed successfully. Cheers!
Nice video, but watching it I really wished that at 3:34, instead of trying to install the Apple Package, you'd retry the Firmware Tool (just for troubleshooting purposes). What I mean is that once the 'EFI Updater' is MOUNTED, most of these errors never occur. So that's it; my tiny advice to your watchers is to try to start the process by mounting the Apple Mac Pro EFI Firmware 1.2 and see if they still get an error first... Still, nice video and great work :)
Another big thank you for your video - it got me pointed in the right direction. However after patching and starting the machine with power button held in, it did the blinking lights but then chimed twice and booted normally. It turned out that I needed to get the the firmware tool called 'Mac Pro 2006-2007 Firmware Tool (005D-B00)'. This worked fine.
Just did the EFI 1,1 to 2,1 as described here from Mavs with my upgraded video card (ATI Radeon 5770HD) installed. Though a couple of steps looked and happened a little differently, it worked fine and 1st boot shows MacPro2,1. About 15 mins in to out. Now to get a new X5365 pair. Thanks mate. Good stuff.

Thanks for the info. Been using Macs since the mid 80's. I recently picked up a brand new in the box Mac Pro 1,1. Upgraded the OS from Tiger to Snow Leopard then to Lion. Installed 16GB of Ram and replaced the HDD with a SDD. Followed your instructions and it worked with no issues. Next step will be to upgrade to El Capitan.
Im running El Capitan and it works great, you will just need pikers boot EFI and a better graphics card (suggest ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024Mb). Ive also got it running Windows 10 too.

Thanks a lot friend! I did it also to my old mac pro and it wend good without the extra work. I wonder why everything about MAC has to be scary and difficult.
Did not work for me after 3 attempts. One oddity: the ram disk was already populated with more than I was adding, I tried erasing the ram disk before populating it and also just overwriting the appropriate files. Everything seemed ok terminal gave all the same responses as your video, lots of activity from the computer after the flashing light and 'Bong'. But no update.
Thank you very much for this new procedure. It worked great for me... Once I realized I needed to be in Lion (and not in El Capitan). Thankfully I have each OS on a separate HDD. I am now in 2.1 ready to install my quadcore processors :-)

The upgrade script cleans out and writes to the /System/Library/...../Firmware Updates folder. However, on my machine that folder cannot be written to even as root. I have no idea what's going on. The folder is owned by root:wheel but nothing can be written to it. It's like the kernel has it locked. Ever heard of this issue? I'm running El Cap on 2006 MacPro 1,1 unmodified.

Not happening for me. Get the system beep and chime, grey screen for a second or five. Cut to black and my hard drive seems to just be stuck in a loop.
Hello my friend I proceeded step by step as you’ve listed and it did it all until I rebooted as recommended to run the update from the RamDisk. I Phelps the power button until it beeped and chimed, but the computer booted up without opening the CD drawer. The result was, it did not upgrade to 2.1. I open and closed the CD drawer using toast I redid all the process
I’m trying to do this, and no matter how many times I do it or how I try it. I just cannot get it to work. I have everything set up correctly and it just never boots up after I hold the power button until it blinks and beeps. It just stays a black screen and the computer just shuts down and on until I manually shut it down by holding the power button. When I restart it, it’s still a 1,1.
Came across a Mac Pro - BTO.CTO - Mac Pro2,1 A1186 - 2138 with two 3GHz Quad Core Xeon X5365 (Clovertown) processors. It has 5 gigs of ram and 4 hard drives, a 250 and three 500s. Your process is the closest I've came to doing this yet however, after i switch it back on and the progress bar is full it fails to boot back up and the optical drive keeps spinning. Anyways, I turned it off and it's worked like a charm, curious as to whether there's any issues I should look out for though since it didn't boot back up smoothly? What to do, I had El Capitan when I bought Mac Pro 1.1, since I don’t understand the OS at all and this is my first experience, I entered iCloud, after which I got into the app store, I had a notification about possible system updates, I pressed install, after which the Mac rebooted and started the installation, but then after completion, I was transferred to Utilita Mac OS X and there are 4 options there: 1 restore the system from a copy (I did not have a copy there) 2 Reinstall Mac OS completely on Lion 3 help safari and 4 had something to do with memory drives. Hi, if your card is not supported you won't see the process/progress of the upgrade, but if all goes well it'll reboot afterwards. Check if you have boot ROM MP11.005D.B00 before beginning, in which case you need a modified firmware update. Good luck!
hi i got an error of 5570 instead of 5530 can I apply the same procedure as 5530? thanks in advance btw my mac pro am using is 2006 model 2GB memory, dual core intel xeon processor and boot rom version MP11.005D.800 lastly the os version is 10.6.8 snow leopard.
HI.. excellent video. I have an early 2009 2.66 quad core Xenon running El Capitan. I'm trying to update 4,1 to 5,1... and keep getting the 5530 error. Will this process work for this update as well?? I'm thinking there is some different code that needs to be entered. Please help!!!
@@graygreensheim2303 I really don't know... sorry. My problem was solved by someone on one of the forums - he was actually in Germany and did it remotely. It had to do with my original motherboard being replaced by Apple as there was a lightning strike near me that caused a short when it was 6 mos old. The serial number (or some other identifying number) was different than the original and was causing some error messages. Once it was flashed to 5.1 it was great. It CAN be done. I was running Catalina beautifully and just didn't go any further, although you easily can using OC. I upgraded to a Mac Studio a few months ago and love it

Then another set of chimes and then the normal boot sequence begins. The computer acts as if nothing's happened and the firmware is still 1,1. Can anybody help?

Hi, if your card is not supported you won't see the process/progress of the upgrade, but if all goes well it'll reboot afterwards. Check if you have boot ROM MP11.005D.B00 before beginning, in which case you need a modified firmware update. Good luck!
Looks that these files to download are not acceptable from the links provided, can you help?
It works great! thanks!
Where can I get the recovery software? My 1,1 didn’t come with it when hitting command-R
Can I do this on Lion and then update to El Capitan?

HI.. excellent video. I have an early 2009 2.66 quad core Xenon running El Capitan. I'm trying to update 4,1 to 5,1... and keep getting the 5530 error. Will this process work for this update as well?? I'm thinking there is some different code that needs to be entered. Please help!!!
Appologies, can't help, never had one of them.
@@RetroGamerVX No problem... got it all worked out. Upgraded everything and now running Mojave!
@@charlesbumcrot1476 so what is the solution?
@@graygreensheim2303 I really don't know... sorry. My problem was solved by someone on one of the forums - he was actually in Germany and did it remotely. It had to do with my original motherboard being replaced by Apple as there was a lightning strike near me that caused a short when it was 6 mos old. The serial number (or some other identifying number) was different than the original and was causing some error messages. Once it was flashed to 5.1 it was great. It CAN be done. I was running Catalina beautifully and just didn't go any further, although you easily can using OC. I upgraded to a Mac Studio a few months ago and love it
Followed your procedure twice, and couldn't find the ram disk either time. Completely failed...!!!
Stupid question once this is done can I then update the osx to Catalina?
Does not work for me, I can shortly see the loading bar when booting but then I get a blackscreen and it boots normally. Help?
Edit : I fixed it You will need another patch tool for your firmware version where you're coming from
How did you fix this? I'm getting the same issue. It reboots, beeps, then goes to a black screen. My fans are running at full rpms too.
The same issue, i tried on Lion and Snow Leopard...
Guys please read my full edit
Can you reupload the files? the links are down. Thanks!!!!
I've tried this 10 or 15 times. Every time everything seems to be going smoothly. I turn of the computer and when I restart, I see the firmware update screen for half a second. Then another set of chimes and then the normal boot sequence begins. The computer acts as if nothing's happened and the firmware is still 1,1. Can anybody help?
Exact same thing is happening to me as well, everything seems to run fine, i see the progress bar for half a second then it reboots again.
