    I appreciate the sentiments in this video so much. Having only last week had to sit and listen to the rep of a well-known British caravan manufacturer refer to “anyone with a caravan and a RUclips account” as “freeloaders”, you begin to see that this is an industry-wide problem. It’s a lack of understanding and an unwillingness to change, I feel. I’ve too been asked to work for free (and regrettably, I have on occasion) and it’s such a regular occurrence that companies who profit well into six figures (or more!) expect you to foot the bill for what will turn out to be some of the best advertising that they could ever wish for.
    Your value speaks for itself; you’re probably the British caravanning RUclipsr with the largest audience now, and you have tens of thousands of followers who listen to and respect your views because your thoughts come from a place of passion and vast experience. And your engagement levels are amazingly high, which is the key factor here. Views count for nothing if the engagement is poor, which a lot of businesses don’t seem to understand yet. The caravan industry on the whole isn’t receptive to criticism or fault-finding, but times are changing and customers have a louder voice than ever thanks to social media. The tide IS turning, I feel. Keep doing this because you love it; that’s the passion that shines through with your content. This video is such an important one for highlighting what needs to change to drive the caravan industry forward and take it up to the next level in this country.

      Wow. Just wow. Those words would have meant a lot coming from anyone, but coming from YOU it means the world, thank you. 'Freeloaders?' Yes, there ARE bad apples in the barrel who spoil it for everyone, but it's not exactly difficult to spot them at 100 paces, is it? And who has caused this culture by not approaching new media in a professional way in the first place?
      100% about the engagement etc. It's hilarious when you see videos with high views and super-low engagement as you know what has gone on.
      Funnily enough, my biggest sponsor never refers to the views when we chat - they are only ever talking about the comments.
      I often think of you, and how I wish I had had these platforms and outlets available to me when I was in my 20s and 30s, but the only outlet was magazines which only carried what would suit the generic readership and advertisers.
      I've moved on from doing the cool stuff because I'm middle aged and boring and am privileged and fortunate enough to have 'done' most things that I have wanted to do. Now it is time for YOU to keep doing what you are doing, because from where I sit, any manufacturer or business in this industry would have to be utterly bonkers not to engage your services or partner with you.

    • @michellebyrom6551
      @michellebyrom6551 Год назад

      Absolutely. I'm an artist and my son used to be a self employed fire and circus performer. The amount of free work demanded for the exposure you mention is incredible. Galleries and museums included. I've looked into an online presence for myself and found the upfront costs for a professional image - like a proper website - put it out of reach. Looking at Folksy and Etsy and suchlike without a website gives the appearance of an amateur and prices aren't taken seriously. A painting that cost £50 to £60 in materials plus field research trips (sketching in the woods) and idea development in the studio needs a realistic price tag of £250+ to get anything back. I make my art for myself anyway.
      My son could earn £75 for a 15 minute performance which sounds amazing. They don't get paid for practice, planning, props, costumes, travel etc. Irregular work is an unreliable income. By the time the dole had limited his equipment replacement costs - fire performance equipment runs in the hundreds - he had a £700 profit for his last year without paying himself any wages.
      Those artists who get wide exposure and mass sales - the fame and fortune glamour - earn phenomenal amounts and much, much more for their backers. The rest lower down the ladder earn enough to cover costs at the bottom and scrape by in the middle. As an hourly wage including non performance work it's well below minimum.
      Like your yt earnings, income falls short of needs especially in the early years.
      I sense things are changing at a fundamental level and patreon has done a lot to help those able to make videos. I'm looking forward to seeing new ways of making beneficial connections.
      Thanks for the interesting video. Sharing the unseen work helps everyone to understand what they're looking at.

    Hi Andrew. Thank you, Thank you so much for making this film. Last week we got a big slap in the face from a Company we supported for 5 Years. We have took the decision to no longer endorse large and middle sized Companies again. We intend to make the content we think appeals to our Subscribers and makes us happy. We will not be attending any of the Shows in the foreseeable future (Companies & The Clubs Do not support any of us). I think some Companies think we are a joke and to be laughed at. I hope the Sun keeps shining for them as this year and next is going to be a difficult ride for them.

    Very thought-provoking. I listened to the podcast you did on John's channel and being someone that does vlogging for no payment (mainly because I have a full-time job anyway and don't contact suppliers etc.) I have to say, I disagreed with a lot of what you said, it rather annoyed me. However, listening to you explain the reasons more in-depth, I've changed my opinion; you're absolutely right in what you say. Suppliers shouldn't expect product reviews for free - mind you, I've done this myself, and I think initially you're just so pleased that anyone would give you anything to review. But having done a few now, I'm starting to think it's taking the pee. Also, as a starter, you have imposter syndrome, constantly thinking you're not worth anything, so why would anyone sponsor some content.
    Apologies for the lengthy reply; it's acted like an epiphany for me, which I didn't expect. Thanks for sharing, and I hope more vloggers watch it; it could help them too.

    • @andrewjditton
      @andrewjditton  Год назад +6

      Hi Graham, many thanks for your reply, and many thanks indeed for keeping an open mind and hearing me out. Remember, with me, my Eurostar salary subsidised my content for a few years. I think 'hobby RUclipsrs' are INCREDIBLY important, and I would be bereft if some of my favourite model railway channels stopped. BUT... when someone else is making money on the back of someone's genuine passion, then that's where the problem starts. I clearly remember DT years ago saying that he's not have a Patreon because he strongly feels that it should be those making money on the back of our content (i.e. the industry) who should be supporting what we do. It's something I strongly agree with, and it's why I don't have Membership or Patreon either. I want to keep all my content available to all regardless of their disposable income, but I have taken on Buy Me a Coffee so those who are in a position to support and who want to (especially with vids like the Ferry Comparison that cost me hundreds to make) can do so.
      Imposter syndrome is something we ALL get mate. I still get it. I still see myself as just a man in a van doing his thing, and I STILL cannot get my head around the fact that so many people want to hear my story.
      Doing a couple of manufacturer trips for nothing more than expenses (thinking that once I'd proved myself I'd get proper recompense) and then getting knocked back was such an eye-opener.
      So... please keep doing what you do too. You are obviously passionate about what you do (did someone mention France?). But remember that you DO have influence, you DO have a voice, and don't let anyone bluff you into thinking otherwise and exploiting that for their own gain.
      And you thought your comment was lengthy... ;)

      The reality is YT is a victim of its own success and too many Channels saying the same thing, so Sponsors can pick and choose and whether you work for free or not is up to the individual, they have no responsibilty to follow anyone elses choices, doesn't mean it works for them....Plenty of people earn more than this for less content and plenty of quality Channels that don't rely or need Sponsorship and are still active, you can't speak for all YT viewers, it's also about how you have your Channel setup, failing Channels aren't just about Sponsors or lack of....If one chooses a career path and it doesn't work out then maybe it just wasn't for them, no point trying to blame others for ones own failings.

    Thank you for the candid video! If I might add, 4K video isn't always worth it: for most people, RUclips will by default pick a lower resolution, and those lower resolutions are generated by RUclips by converting the original video at a much lower quality than if the original had been 1080p. (I like to watch swooping vistas from train driver windows, and the lack of quality when a 4K video plays at 1080p or even 1440p is painful.) Just my 2p worth. Either way, looking forward to your future videos, Andrew!

An element of future-proofing is behind the decision too. All the best.

    A lot of manufacturers / suppliers see RUclips as cheap marketing. A few free products cost very little to them and but they get a lot of targeted exposure to an audience in their specific niche. That’s more valuable to them than advertising in a newspaper where, even though more people will see the advertisement, the percentage of those actually interested in their product is much less… but still they’ll never pay a RUclipsr the equivalent advertising rate!

After presenting television programmes for the BBC for some 25 years I'm now thoroughly enjoying making videos for myself, being the producer, director, sound man and camera operator as well as the presenter. One thing you don't mention is the personal cost when it comes to things like privacy or anonymity. It must take some adjustment when complete strangers talk to you with great familiarity about many aspects of your life. You are a great advocate for caravaning and you were the impetus for me switching to a caravan from camping (that and getting older!) with the videos of the beautiful CLs etc

      Oh, I could have gone on and on! Fortunately the huge majority of people are respectful, but there are always those who aren't. At the end of the day, while I acknowledge that I put aspects of my life 'out there,' there are also boundaries as well. Occasionally someone will overstep the mark (like the guy attacking me for getting Ted and living in Uist) and these people DO drain your energy and resources, but also remember that I've been dealing with ***** like that longer than they have been leaving nasty comments ;)

    I got asked the other day why I dont put a donate button on my videos to get donations and I laughed. I started doing mine for me, as a keep sake of my journey. I said to that person that I totally understand why some youtubers ask for donations, its because they put in the time and effort to make good quality content, so why not? ( mine are low quality chit chat and I admit that lol), I have been watching you for years now, and your videos have gone from great to even greater. I think its a shame you do not get more than you do, because you really do go all out to provide informative and entertaining content. ANdrew, I really enjoyed this video. An excellent and honest analysis of how freelancers are sometimes treated by the 'salaried' community who simply do not understand the time and costs involved in creative enterprises. Your comments on being taken for granted on day rates really resonates with me and I agree wholeheartedly in the 'walk away' dictum. Being properly remunerated for your efforts motivates and validates your work as a creator and is essential in my opinion. I think one of the issues is there's so many people in extreme situations - either too much support from wealthy families or no support at all leading to a sense of desperation - that there's a constant pool of creators willing to work for nothing. If this process could somehow be checked so people are encouraged to charge for their work then we could stop this ludicrous bleed of valuable creative work proliferating onto the internet for free...and the big tech companies hoovering it up and monetising it.

    Great video here Andrew. I always appreciate your honesty. I used to do videos for a dealer and I know I sold them many caravans guessing made 10's of K from our videos. Went to trade in van and offered bottom of book, let's just say I no longer give them free advertising. We have worked for 4 years and only get paid enough to reach the pay limit in summer so around 80 pounds then. Most months 20. Average video is 20 hours of work. That is why we are doing a great deal less content than we used to. Although I do enjoy it the time vs the reward has definitely dipped and get little from the trade. This year we had someone try to get us to do a video for a tent, when I said fine for very little money they said no. However, lots of others did and as long as those other people say yes we will always be struggling. So far in 4 years I have had two sleeping bags and a jackery for free so could be worse. I have also been frustrated that caravan vlogs etc really struggle while vanlife/motorhome youtubers often seem to fly in comparison. I had to stop as was getting too frustrated comparing ourselves. Always hoped would get a break of a bigger channel mentioning us but it never happened as much as tried with some.

Congratulations on setting a worth and value to your work. Andrew, an excellent and very informative video that I believe will shock but help many people. RUclips most certainly provides yourself, myself and many others with a global audience for free and that is fantastic. Their model generates income from advertising that one can quite understand. From my own modest experience, in a completely different genre, I was aware many years ago how little income I generated from what I thought were a significant number of views per video or advert. At the end of the day your integrity, valuable information provided and the quality of your videos rightly comes first and by following that path you will always have a significant following of discerning subscribers.

    Andrew I 100% agree with your comments. My son who graduated from Central st Martins two years ago with a degree in film making is constantly being asked to work either for free or for peanuts. If asked if they will cover expenses often they say no. These are high end fashion brands. So it seems far too many sectors are taking people for a ride, my son knows that when he says NO there will be others who will do it. We have the same with our design company, people want us to free pitch all the time, so often 2-3 thousand pounds is spent creating the pitch, if you win budgets are so tight that you never recover that, if you lose the pitch that’s money down the drain. The dangling carrot of getting more work from that client if you win the pitch is a fallacy as they go to tender every time, so your just back to square one again. I still love being a creative, doing great work, but like you want people to value it… that’s all. Thanks for your video.

To say that RUclips is now the 2nd largest search engine in the world they really had better learn to see the value of this platform and impact a lot of the exposure youtubers bring to their businesses. This industry is actually getting younger, by that i mean there are younger couples joining the community and the marketing that appeals to this audience is not a monthly magazine. This Should be a warning to all companies trading in this industry. The passion with which you make your videos inspires me and as said by many this is what your followers adore about you. I think SOME RUclips channels are REALLY good, some are poor and on some I wouldn't trust what they say.
    If caravan/motorhome firms and other areas of the "travel/leisure industry" are not prepared to pay a decent going-rate for first-class, professional and respected work like yours then more fool them! I put more weight on your unbiased views and the opinions of my friends who have many years experience of camping in the fields, than in the views or advice of most of the self-interested sellers of recreational vehicles that I have come into contact with.
    Carry on with the videos if you enjoy making them. I certainly enjoy watching them!
