It technically was a dream. Tidus was a figment of the past, a mere recreation of Jecht's imagination brought to the present by Auron. If you haven't seen it yet, you should watch Final Fantasy X - Auron's Story - A Tribute... as it really shows how, through Jecht Spheres and the few words that Auron speaks, this story is about his uncanny friendship with Jecht and Auron is truly the one pulling all the strings and making things happen as time goes on.

Yeah, it’s not on today’s standards exactly. But it still looks great, easily! I mean it’s the same as comparing a NES game from 1985 to an Xbox 360 game in 2006. Which one aged better?
I used to do this dance in my mom's room and I'd play the scene over and over! I remember trying to do it on top of a laundry basket (like the water pillar she's standing on) but I was too big and I broke the basket. ahh memories.
Azure Kate I used to do the dance, too. I would dance on top of the well in my backyard using a big stick as a staff. My brother came over to ask what I was doing and I accidentally wacked him in the face. 😂
I think this scene also marks one of the first steps in Tidus's growth. Just before, his biggest issue was his desire to go back home to Zanarkand, but after seeing this sad dance, his thoughts are all about the people killed by Sin and those left behind. Progression from being a selfish blitzball ace, I think.

My uncle used to babysit for me when I wa a kid and he'd always hum the hymn of the fayth to get me to sleep I never knew what the song was. yeah many don't realize how much asian elements are put in place. the clothing, the world building...etc. I think that is why it feels very different than rest of the FF where its usually built in the western settings
It's one reason why it's my favorite FF game. Its just.. different in so many ways. I know you made this comment like 5 years ago, but I came back to watch this scene today, in 2022 to relive it again.
I feel the trauma and inspiration for this stems from tsunamis that are native to Asian countries. Small villages like this would get wiped out, Asian culture puts so much grief into their art, turning it into a phenomal experience
Yes, FFX was the first game I played with this much attention to detail and wasn’t little bit pieces RPG. I was recently talking about this scene to my bf and felt the urge to look it up.
I remember seeing this at my friend's place when I was a kid and I had no idea what Final Fantasy was. I remember being absolutely mesmerized by this and went out to buy FFX the very next day. After that, I realized video games are more than just arcade fun that you play with your friends/alone, they've stories and worlds that they can deliver in a way no other media can. I hate to use the term "gamer", but without this scene and this game, I'd have never spent countless hours playing video games and become a "gamer."
Even in 2018 this scene is still iconic. Her stoicism and resolve were still strong at this point, which made it even more heartbreaking when she finally broke down in Macalania Woods and admitted for the first time that she didn't want to die after the Final Summoning.
This is still so stunning 20 something years later. The way the destruction of Kilika was so brutally swift, the way the dead are arranged underwater like flower petals, the way Yuna walks on water like a prophet, the way Yuna and the water become the style/stigma and the pyreflies fly away like pollen, the way the fire torches intensify, the way the people are crying and Lulu explains the sending, the sun setting... Top tier scene.
Johan Liebert if you don't care about this kind of art then it's only you and you only that doesn't appreciate this kind of art, who are you to call this nonsense? stfu.
Johan Liebert You're just a sad pathetic troll who replies in most of these comments under this video trying to show your shitty opinion that games or this scene in particular isn't a form of art, this is art if you like it or not.
When my cousin introduced me to this I genuinely felt like Tidus and my cousin being Lulu. Tidus in the game asking "what's the end?" And my same confusion when I would ask my cousin "what's gonna happen!?" And my cousin reveling in the spoiler-free torture would simply say "you need to play to find out." Similar to Lulu saying "when Yuna defeats Sin."
I have a job like this. And I don't wish this job on anyone! I am a Kaitiaki of New Zealand. (A Guardian of Birth, Death, and Marriage) It's a birthright.
I remember when I first played this I wondered who that woman had lost to make her collapse in such a way. When I played this again I realised she is in the scene when sin attacks kilika, holding a baby. Now when I watch this I feel horror struck as opposed to feeling in awe.
I was wondering if I was the only one who put two and two together. Even more horrifying is that she was also with two other children.... ma'am, where are those children? Ma'am? 😢
I cannot imagine the pressure that was on Yuna in that moment. Actually seeing the souls of your loved ones leaving the physical bodies, like no, I would be an emotional wreck. Period.
What I love about this scene is that, out of context, the dance is very beautiful. In context, it is still beautiful but there is a much greater sadness which comes to the dance. I love it so much!
The job what they did here (especially the animators) is beyond human....The fluidity of the dance (especially around 2:38) is jawdropping even nowadays....
Look at the level of animation when shes doing the sending. That is truly masterful. Its almost life like. The little twists of her staff, the stances she makes... amazing craftmanship. Every detail thought of
Everyone always talks about how amazing Aeres, Tifa, Lightning are etc. etc. For me, it's always been Yuna. She's the girl you take home to momma. Tidus might've been a moron at times, but he's got good taste in women. She truly is a beautiful soul.
@@jet44444 I wouldn't say it ruined her. FFX-2 may be a little cheesy with the Charlies Angels vibe. But I actually like it a lot. X is Tidus story so it has the dramatic weight of his arc and the weight of the responsibilities she carries. FFX-2 is more like a glorified epilogue/after story. I like that we get to see Yuna let her hair down and have some fun. She goes through so much in this game, I found it really nice to be able spend time with Yuna being a free spirit.
I remember playing this game for the first time years ago. This scene definitely set the tone for the rest of the game. It felt like I was truly on an adventure.
The first time I saw this scene I cried as despite the beauty and all the graphical genius in this game it was one of the most heartfelt games I’ve played I have loved final fantasy since seven came out and every one is beautiful and lovingly written the creators should be proud of their storytelling as not many other games have every emotion and heartbreaking choices in them
I have a lot going in my life. Depression is at the point of feeling emotionless, yet, I am writing my novel and inspiring myself on the games of my childhood like Megaman Zero and, of course, Final Fantasy X. This scene reawakened the same emotion I felt playing this as a kid. I feel much better now. Thank God for videogames.
One of my favorite things about this scene other than how beautiful it is is how it subverts a certain trope you see in romance stories/subplots while also PROGRESSING said romance in a mature, believable way. Its pretty common for the romantic interests to witness one person in their element (you know, that moment when the world disappears and they are focused on this one thing) while the other gazes in awe, acting as a catalyst for the budding romance. Usually for the male characters, it's when they are displaying their martial art prowess, strength, or courage that makes them look cool to the female romantic interest that sparks the beginning of that budding romance (think MHA when Ochako blushes watching Deku train or ATLA when Aang protects a town from a volcano and Katara realizes how powerful a bender he is). For women, it's usually when they display skills that pertain to beauty and grace like singing or dancing. When the male lead watches them, they have that 😳 moment and realize they find them attractive (and it's usually paired with the "male gaze"). Here, the scene and camera, although showing us substantial shots of the villagers and Tidus' reaction, is very much focused on Yuna. And it's done where it kinda involuntarily makes the player (us) participate in the "male gaze". Many of the shots are focused on Yuna's body, how she moves, how graceful and beautiful she looks as she does the sending. Only Tidus-and I can't stress how important this is-TIDUS, THE MALE ROMANTIC INTEREST, is the one who brings the player (us) back to reality and reminds us that what we're witnessing is horrific and not something ANYONE should want to see. Not Lulu, not the villagers, not even Yuna. TIDUS is the one who tells us this. It subverts our expectations because the way the scene plays, we expect that Tidus, after Yuna's done, will remark on how lovely Yuna looked in the sunset, dancing on the water, only for him to basically say, "I never want to see this again." It displays maturity on his part too, since he realizes the circumstances of this dance revolve around death, pain, and envy, and not just "ooh pretty lady dancing!😳" It also makes their eventual romance feel much more mature and founded on a deeper understanding of what roles and responsibilities they have in the fight against Sin. It's not a spur of the moment realization under beautiful lighting or heroic music; it's realizing their journey will entail suffering, and if they want to stop that suffering, then they must do their part to stop Sin.
LOVE your reading of it, youre completely correct. Also, this is the scene that made tidus realize hell NEVER come back home. In a way, yuna performed sending for tidus, because he too started to let go of his hopes of being back playing blitz with no care in the world. This scene is so beautiful and is an emotional gut punch on many levels.
Really insightful reading, absolutely love how this game contrasts the darkness of the world with its beauty and shows how it can be both of those things equally.
@@Juanmaligno When I was a kid playing the game for the first few times, I saw them but I just didn't comprehend what they could be lol. But yeah, pretty heavy stuff
3:40 I must say... the part that broke my heart is the ending. In this moment you can see yuna looking behind her and then on the sunset. I first thought that was part of the sending coreografy, but it isn't. She's actually want to be sure that she send all the poor souls to the otherworld. She want to be sure that she made a perfect duty ad a summoner, she cares about all of them. Everybody gangsta saying that she's a Marysue, until they understand how much pressure she have, how much courage she have, how much she suffers everyday.
I cried so hard of emotion when I first saw this scene. There's something about the colors, music and the moment itself that just makes it perfect and soul-piercing.
Did someone notice that in 3:39, when Yuna is sending all the souls, some kind of "bright" or "luminiscent" Tidus is being closer to her walking in the water too??? That was a quick clue to notice Tidus is dead already!!!
They really made a good work on how beautiful and gloom are holding hands in this scene. From Tidus perspective as an innocent and naive person who feels himself out of that world how he admires the beauty on the scenery and performance through her dancing when in the meantime the people surrounding him can only feel grieve and pain for their loved ones deceased being sending to the farplane.
I cry everytime I see this! We have something similar to a Sending here in New Zealand. On the third day after death a Maori spirit must be ushered into what we call "the Deadlands" at Spirits Bay, NZ. Because of my birthright, must perform a type of 'sending' when Maori people die. I am called a 'Kaitiaki.' (Guardian of the Dead) It's a very sad job to have!
3:39 The Sending tugs at the magic that brought Tidus from the other "dimension" of Zanarkand. Yuna ascending on a magical waterspout tends to draw the eye away, I guess until you've seen it twenty times or so.
I remember when i was a kid. I watched my brother play and this scene came on I remember being so mesmerized and thought its the most beautiful scene ever.
That moment when realize that it's not all just superstition, that she's dancing for the dead and that the dead are *listening*, that was really a killer moment.
This scene gives me goosebumps! It just ... just so beautiful yet so heartbreaking for the lives that was lost...It just gets me every single time... so much emotion.
I can't believe this game is as old at it is. It's still probably the most beautiful awe inspiring scene I've ever witnessed to date... It's weird how things flow together in life. There is definitely hands upon ours we don' notice. I was just saying a few hours ago how I felt like a ghost and it's been depressing me for a long time so seeing this made me cry tonight.
The only scene in a game to bring tears to my eyes. Not just because of how beautiful it is, but because of the circumstance they were in. Very heavy scene...
"Yuna chose her own path. She knew, from the beginning, what it meant. All we can do is protect her along the way, until the end." After your first playthrough you be like :|
The tiniest of touches in this game... notice how he glowed there at the end just before she stopped? They were telling us from the very start what was to come, but we were all too wrapped up in the love story to notice. This game breaks my heart over again each time I replay it.
I always thought of the scene as Erie but never out right horrifying. It was strangely beautiful in someway but I can understand why everyone was scared and we’re traumatized. Most of the village and or their loved ones were just killed by sin and now they have to watch them leave.
"Until then end" it means so much more when you fully understand what that means. As a kid playing I really thought it was just defeat Sin and that was it the world was save. But you never imaging that defeating Sin means..
I remember being blown away as a 14 year old boy when I first saw Final Fantasy X. I already knew about Final Fantasy but I only played VIII and not all the way. When I saw Final Fantasy X, it was amazing. The summons, the abilities, hell, this cutscene.
This scene is perfect. The beauty of the music, pyreflies and water mixed with the mourning of the locals and Tidus's look of confusion and horror. It's all perfect. Not to mention this is Yuna's first sending but yet Lulu and Khimari are completely unfazed
This is one of those scenes comparable to the opera of VI, the death of the ancient in VII, the ballroom dance in VIII, the... in IX well, hm... I suppose Bahamut killing Queen Brahne was remarkable.
I remember I flew out to visit my best friend in Japan solely to play this game because it wasn’t out in the US yet. She and I stayed up late watching this scene for the first time.. it was an emotional moment. Holy shit that was a long add time ago!
how do I know the dialog? why do I feel such a deep strong feeling in my heart when I see this game? I don't understand, seriously don't. but I feel like ffx is a part of me, an important part of my growing up and understanding myself. and 10 years after I finished it for the 1st time, it still is the game I genuinely loved most in my life. wish any other game would one day come to be as close to my heart this one...
The religious context of FFX helped me realize I could be gay and not fear hell. That sometimes, a world will make a monster from its own fears. Then sentence anything unique to face it’s horrors.
This scene made me cry the first time I played the game. And I still cry every so often watching it. One of the most beautiful scenes in Final Fantasy history.
this was golden ages of jrpg.. companies used to compete to whom make best work of art in all aspects.. it was all good times until mmorpg been invented.. and they are never the same ever since..
Am I the only one who thinks that the quality of those scenes dropped drastically after FFX?? Like... compare this scene with FF13 - the overhaul graphics may be better but where's the love for detail? It looks like half of their hair is glued to their heads (while Lightnings hair seems to have no physics at all... must be a wig of steel she has there) and the clothes, too. I liked this style here way more than it is now.
i'm not able to explain the technicality of it all, but maybe someone can because for some reason--and i do agree--the cinematic scenes in ffx were just way more satisfying. I'm sure plenty disagree w/ me but i think these scenes aged pretty well, i still find them beautiful.

I've never noticed this but Tidus is glowing slightly when Yuna completes the Sending.
he's spirit himself.
miss this game; shame I don't have it anymore
Am i blind? how come i can't see him glowing o.O?
kalliskivike He isn't, just the lighting.
Probably just lighting, but then again it could be very subtle foreshadowing.
thangnguyen02 I've it now for my ps4 *_* and i love it x and x 2
Today is January 06, 2025. This scene remains iconic.
I've studied great artists for 62 years..from Rembrandt to Hendrix, Bob Fosse to Mozart, this is one of my favorite pieces of work in any medium...
T.J. Payeur Beautiful comment
Videogames are almost the perfect art form
@Mariel Ramirez Ico also was a very artistic videogame. That's why some dumb gamers didn't like it.
This scene with this music stucked into my mind for almost 14 years. So sad and beautiful. FFX was art.
I like this comment.
Your cousin should get more respect for not spoiling the game outright.
+Davey Bowen Your cousin gave you a perfect answer.
Your cousin gave you a perfect answer.
Same I was like OK so the last holding the baby is alive where's the baby?
.....*realize what happened*OOOOOHHHH NOOOOOOO!!!!!
I was wondering if I was the only one who put two and two together. Even more horrifying is that she was also with two other children.... ma'am, where are those children? Ma'am? 😢
@@natashaw.7315 one of the children is the one crying while Lulu explains the sending.
I cannot imagine the pressure that was on Yuna in that moment. Actually seeing the souls of your loved ones leaving the physical bodies, like no, I would be an emotional wreck. Period.
Oh my god... Ive never noticed that Tidus also responds to the ritual. His souls years for rest.
What I love about this scene is that, out of context, the dance is very beautiful. In context, it is still beautiful but there is a much greater sadness which comes to the dance. I love it so much!
4:30 I never forget how everyone just couldn't bear to tell Tidus at the time what exactly "the end" meant.
Brian04510
Well, later on, when Tidus learns the truth, Lulu admits that no one had it in them to tell Tidus that.
I've seen this scene so many times..I just love how they portray the sending done by a summoner. T_T
The job what they did here (especially the animators) is beyond human....The fluidity of the dance (especially around 2:38) is jawdropping even nowadays....
still gives me goosebumps every time. amazing scene
Hei Hei until X2 ruined her.
who says Lighting is amazing lmfao
What about Aerith tho
@@jet44444 I wouldn't say it ruined her. FFX-2 may be a little cheesy with the Charlies Angels vibe. But I actually like it a lot. X is Tidus story so it has the dramatic weight of his arc and the weight of the responsibilities she carries. FFX-2 is more like a glorified epilogue/after story. I like that we get to see Yuna let her hair down and have some fun. She goes through so much in this game, I found it really nice to be able spend time with Yuna being a free spirit.
I remember playing this game for the first time as a kid. one of the most iconic scenes ever.
I remember playing this game for the first time years ago. This scene definitely set the tone for the rest of the game. It felt like I was truly on an adventure.
The first time I saw this scene I cried as despite the beauty and all the graphical genius in this game it was one of the most heartfelt games I’ve played I have loved final fantasy since seven came out and every one is beautiful and lovingly written the creators should be proud of their storytelling as not many other games have every emotion and heartbreaking choices in them
many years later and i realized those are coffins in the water. the chills i got.
The graphics of this cutscene, 20 years ago, were mindblowing. It's still beautiful today.
I love this comment. This is such a beautiful and timeless scene.
This whole time I thought those were manta rays of some sort. They're DEAD BODIES. OMG.
The right name for them is: Souls, but yes, they are.
@@Rick41632 He is talking about the caskets that the sould are coming out of
@@peteypablo09 OMG I DID NOT SEE THAT
@@Juanmaligno When I was a kid playing the game for the first few times, I saw them but I just didn't comprehend what they could be lol. But yeah, pretty heavy stuff

I must say... the part that broke my heart is the ending.
I never read anyone saying that Yuna is a Marysue. She's probably one of the most human and stronger female characters in gaming history.
I cried so hard of emotion when I first saw this scene. There's something about the colors, music and the moment itself that just makes it perfect and soul-piercing.
best final fantasy game ever
christian p. trinidad there will never be another final fantasy game like this one
***** ff versus came put already?
Yeah until they screwed it over with Final Fantasy X-2...
Really? No I don’t think so. X2? Lol suddenly this summoner is shooting guns? Lol yeah no.
Amazing battle system. I love anything with Yuna. She's an amazing character.
Did someone notice that in 3:39, when Yuna is sending all the souls, some kind of "bright" or "luminiscent" Tidus is being closer to her walking in the water too??? That was a quick clue to notice Tidus is dead already!!!
tidus isnt dead or a unsent. he would more likely be more aligned with what a aeon is.
I got chills. Felt like crying. Seriously this game is so beautiful, even now.
This scene still makes me fight back tears literally 20 YEARS LATER!
Instantly fell in love with Yuna in this scene.
Easely one of the most beautifull scenes in gaming history
This is one of the most beautiful scenes I've ever seen in a video game... and it's also what solidified my major childhood crush on Yuna.
Yuna is breathtaking beautiful my no.1 favorite female ff character
Nothing has yet to surpass this!
One of the most breath taking scene in the game.
3:28 idk why when that girl cries it makes me wanna cry
Because she's the same from another cutscene, where she's watching her kid play while holding a baby in her arms
2022 and this scene still lingers on my mind its so beautiful💗😭
This scene gives me goosebumps! It just ... just so beautiful yet so heartbreaking for the lives that was lost...It just gets me every single time... so much emotion.
Yuna is such a wafu
Tidas hit it on the head when he said "beautiful, yet somehow horrifying"
I can't believe this game is as old at it is. It's still probably the most beautiful awe inspiring scene I've ever witnessed to date... It's weird how things flow together in life. There is definitely hands upon ours we don' notice. I was just saying a few hours ago how I felt like a ghost and it's been depressing me for a long time so seeing this made me cry tonight.
The only scene in a game to bring tears to my eyes. Not just because of how beautiful it is, but because of the circumstance they were in. Very heavy scene...
The way Tidus looks at Yuna ❤😍
"Yuna chose her own path. She knew, from the beginning, what it meant. All we can do is protect her along the way, until the end."
After your first playthrough you be like :|
Hear this song playing 19 years later and still remember it.
The tiniest of touches in this game... notice how he glowed there at the end just before she stopped? They were telling us from the very start what was to come, but we were all too wrapped up in the love story to notice. This game breaks my heart over again each time I replay it.
That song has always been haunting. In a positive way.
This version of Yuna is so much better than the X-2
When I first saw this, I thought it looked so real. I remember wondering how it could get better from here.
I love Yuna
Years after this scene still amazes me. This ladies and gentleman is ART.
I always thought of the scene as Erie but never out right horrifying. It was strangely beautiful in someway but I can understand why everyone was scared and we’re traumatized. Most of the village and or their loved ones were just killed by sin and now they have to watch them leave.
FFVII moment was the first heart breaking moment ever but if you watched this and felt nothing then i feel nothing but sorrow for you.
One of my favorite scenes in the entire game, so sad and beautiful.
"Until then end" it means so much more when you fully understand what that means. As a kid playing I really thought it was just defeat Sin and that was it the world was save. But you never imaging that defeating Sin means..
I need a Live Yuna Sending Performance during Distance Worlds FFX 20 years anniversary concert 2021
This was my first final fantasy at age 10. To this day, this is the most riveting scene from any piece of media I’ve seen since then.
My eyes flow out tears watching this eveytime.
Never before a scene in a game has made me feel in awe like this. Beatiful
I remember making a separate save just to watch this over and over again when I was a kid.
I genuinely cried at this part, this game is a dam masterpeice.
such a beautiful scene.
Why does no one, even in modern day times/gameplay, talk about how this is one of the most beautiful scenes of gameplay ever?
Because this game trash
18 years later... still as good as I remember... captivating
this is such a powerful scene....the feels...Yuna -sama!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is art people. beautiful art gets me emotional!
I remember being blown away as a 14 year old boy when I first saw Final Fantasy X. I already knew about Final Fantasy but I only played VIII and not all the way. When I saw Final Fantasy X, it was amazing. The summons, the abilities, hell, this cutscene.
Yuna was like a mini goddess
This scene is perfect. The beauty of the music, pyreflies and water mixed with the mourning of the locals and Tidus's look of confusion and horror. It's all perfect. Not to mention this is Yuna's first sending but yet Lulu and Khimari are completely unfazed
This is one of those scenes comparable to the opera of VI, the death of the ancient in VII, the ballroom dance in VIII, the... in IX well, hm... I suppose Bahamut killing Queen Brahne was remarkable.
theConduit ffix: Alexander vs. Bahamut
Ah! Thanks, yes, that was a great scene. I completely forgot about it.
theConduit SPOILERS!!!
E - yea - yu - yiiiiiii XD always sang that part , beautiful cutscene I’ll remember this forever.
That head turn at 3:46 is sooooo cool.
When I saw Yae Mikos story quest cutscene i immediately thought of this?
Best beautiful 😍scene ever Yuna is the beautiful final fantasy character ever
2021 and i'm still amazed by this scene. Yuna had become the great summoner.
You're right, it was the uncanny valley.
Such a beautiful piece of art.
