    I hope we eventually get a proper Alexander total war game or DLC. There is so much they could do with his time period if they give it enough time and resources: Update the map, extend the map (add India for example, which Alexander wanted to conquer before his army mutinied), add more factions and troops etc.

    i enjoy playing the Julii because they are the main Roman Faction if you ask me, there Red the colour along with Purple, the got the most roman looking symbol as well, there also the family of the man who made Rome into an Empire Octavian. There THE Roman Faction in a way.
    I do agree with you on Troy i do hope this game is more Bronze Age Total War than Troy the Scripted War. The War with Troy better be big and good though otherwise it will be kind of a downer if you can sweep Troy aside like some normal settlement. I mean when Attila came in his name sake game he was a plague on earth minus the annoying three lives mechanic he got going on. But his armies where a real threat to most factions and he was a real main boss battle in a way, Hope Troy when your not playing them is like that or maybe the Spartans are like that when you are Troy.

    Sadly, Shogun 2's unit roster being similar across the board is mostly accurate.
    Though Ikko's gun monks are interesting, as is Takeda's use of cavalry. Not because it had the best cavalry, but because it was one of the ONLY clans to use lancer cavalry.
    Beyond that, yeah everyone's armies in the sengoku period was the same, whith the most significant differences being the skill of the commanders themselves which isn't represented well in game.

    Disagree on the Julii m8, they are actually the most replayable Roman faction. If you find them repetative just going for Barbarians all the time, simply train more armies and send them in other directions, that's what I do. They can go for the Greek lands in the east and for the Islands and North Africa, cut off the other Romans while they're at it.
    The Brutti meanwhile are just up against phalanxes the whole way, now THAT is boring imo.

    One thing that could make for a good Alexander 2 game would be if they expand the map out to the west, so you could have the choice of invading Persia as Alexander historically did, ignoring Persia altogether and invading Italy instead, or trying to do both simultaneously. That would give much more replayability and a wider variety of opponents to deal with.

    To Shogun's defence, that's the point. It's a civil war game, so apart from the unique units it's all about what infrastructure you build and what style you lean into. • @Arritour
    @Arritour 4 года назад +29

    I think it's a bit harsh to say EVERY faction in Shogun 2 plays the same. There are some more unique factions like Ikko Ikki, Hattori, Otomo that play in non-conventional ways, and the Faction specialisms do make you go in different ways (monks for Uesegi, Swords for Shimazu, No Dachi for Date, etc.)
    I do get it's pretty similar, but I find it fun to play as a horde type faction as the takeda, using only cav and a few shock infantry units, or going straight for gunpowder as Shimazu (Nanban trade ships are OP). The Starting positions also do have a pretty big impact, and you've got the different diplomacy, expansion, trade routes you can take. Then you've got Fall of the Samurai, where playing traditional vs playing modern is a completely different game.
    Maybe I'm just a big Shogun fan though. The sieges against the AI can definitely be repetitive (soooo many times shooting arrows in to kill AI troops milling around for 10 minutes) but they're repetitive in Medieval 2 aswell, as much as I love that game. Just my 2 cents anyway :)

      @@armando2845 oh yeah I watch MrSmartDonkeyLP. He got me back into Shogun 2 when I took a long break from it.
      I do feel there's a lot more to the game than what Melkor suggests (especially with DLCs that adds cool units, clans and time periods).
      It's also weirdly one of the best games for Pike and Shot type battles - especially if you're playing the Oda Clan. Doesn't have all the glitches vanilla Medieval 2 has with pikes and guns, and is pretty historically accurate for the end of that era of Japan.

    • @demomanchaos
      @demomanchaos 4 года назад +2

      The DLC units/factions are basically required to make the game more interesting. My main reason for coming back to it time and again are the mods. Not only are there some nice ones out there already, but the game is super easy to mod. I've made quite a few mods myself, like making it so you can run FoTS units in RoTS (MrSmartDonkey did a brief run with that mod) or any other mixture of the 3 campaigns you want (Gods be with you if you try RoTS in FoTS) and even a total overhaul that converted at 12 factions in the Sengoku period into entirely unique historical/fantasy based clans (Dragons, Mages, Elves, Dwarves, Macedon, etc).

    • @Arritour
      @Arritour 4 года назад +1

      @@demomanchaos that sounds cool, wouldn't having FOTS units in ROTS be ludicrously easy though lol (I understand that's probably the point)
      And I always thought Shogun 2 was really hard to mod, besides unit reskins and the like. Are there good mods for it nowadays?

    • @demomanchaos
      @demomanchaos 4 года назад +1

      @@Arritour Generally FoTS in RoTS is fairly easy, but Levy Infantry are just as useless as ever, the loose spacing means your artillery won't be as effective, and the hills make gun units hard to use. Donkey in his run of it nearly had an army of Infintere De Marines get wiped by a fairly small garrison during an offensive siege so don't underestimate RoTS units.
      Download the program called "Pack File Manager." You can open game files and everything appears in a spreadsheet. Once you know what you are looking for you can do quite a lot. Like I said I did a total conversion for all 12 factions using just built-in assets (Made crossbows and slingers work) and while the "Dragons" in my mod don't look like dragons they have fully functional fire "breath" weapons.
      There are plenty of mods with new assets, like the Portugal Mod and one that adds China/Korea to the game (Landmass included). There is also someone working on a LoTR mod, but from what I've seen of the playable demo the balance is just fucked (intentionally so). You've also got a plethora of new units and maps on the Steam Workshop, as well as fixes/tweaks and even outright cheats.
      What I did to learn was open up the files for a mod and poked around to see how they did what they did, what tables they changed and how. Once you know the tables you can adjust pretty much everything you can think of. If you have time, it is certainly worth a try.

Too many factions are crowded in the N-E, making their campaigns really similar and while the unit roster is more varied than Shogun 2, some units are so strong, they become a must-have in every army. Ma Teng and the Yellow Turbans are the only truly unique factions in that game.

Take Mediolanium, Patavium, Segesta for sure, then take Massilia because it's a good city. From then on, stop expanding to the west and work towards taking Carthage and Thapsus. Once you got those, go and try to take Athens and some of the other greek settlements. Focus on taking the rich settlements so that you get the upper hand during the civil war. That's already one way to play differently then just conquering Gaul.

    The Celtics in total war attila would have been far more enjoyable had creative assembly decided to break up ireland and britan they are currently far too small to play in. Ireland alone would be a great opportunity to recreate the mythical legend of Niall Noígíallach an Irish king and supposedly the ancestor of the Uí Néill dynasties that would later dominate northern Ireland of the early medieval period.

    Britain should have more provinces because by the late 4th century both Britiania superior and britannia inferior had been broken up into further 4 provinces, 5 if you include Valencia which was in the occupied zone between Hadrian wall and the antonine wall. It would also have been a great opporunity to make the Romano Britons playable in some fashion

    The reason why I enjoy shogun 2 despite of a lack of variety: the abundance of flavor.
    Shimazu play very different from otomo despite having the same units. It is indeed the same units over and over but in the end medieval 2 is the same. Only difference is numbers but in the end you have your lvl 1 spearman, lvl 2 and lvl 3
    I thoroughly enjoy both shogun 2 and the fantasy ones but i would not say one is more diverse than the other.
    Warhammer 2 has a lot of visual diversity. But all my armies of every faction end up looking the same. I will always have a similar composition
    I've never had a need for a cav heavy army in wh compared to the takeda
    Never made a pike and shot army like the otomo
    Etc, i definitely understand the argument though!

  • @diavasmamevroxi
    @diavasmamevroxi 4 года назад +1

    Yea unfortunately it makes sense for Shogun 2 to have more or less same units because there's no big culture difference between the clans. Otomo, Ikko Ikki and the Sengoku Jidai pack are locked behind a paywall. However you are hardly ever gonna have the same units in each clan endgame, especially in harder difficulties, because they have different bonuses. You have to build your armies around your clan's strengths otherwise you will be outclassed or end up broke. Sadly clans such as the Tokugawa or the Hattori are just fucked.

    Let us talk Troy. I dislike the limited unit choice of Shogun 2 but I like the idea of starting as a minor clan with a single castle. Ancient Greeks had city-states, which makes for a fun start. A single city-state is trying to survive and expand by forging alliances and attacking enemies when they are weak. I just hope the map would be big enough. TW Troy is about archaic Greece, but I want classical Greece map with city-states and possibly the Great empires like Persia and Macedon.

  • @zapdragon23
    @zapdragon23 4 года назад

    I have some disagreements
    1. I just think you're wrong about the Egyptian campaign in NTW because the Italian campaign exists. there's only one branch off the story path you can take and that is heavily discouraged by the time limit and unlike the Egyptian campaign you aren't fighting anyone interesting. while there are some interesting environments at times they almost never show up. Egypt has interesting and different maps in every battle, an incredibly unique roster (even for the french), and unique attrition in the dessert mechanics.
    2. how can you put all of shogun 2 here but nothing from empire. not only does ETW also have a lot of same-y rosters (not only are a lot of Europeans very similar, but most don't have any unique American or Indian units) but ETW lacks any serious challenge because the AI's an idiot.
    3. I can actually get behind putting all of shogun 2 vanilla on this list because honestly it is pretty same-y. the only factions I've seriously played much are the shimazu and ikko ikki which basically means one standard faction and the only unique one. I assume however you aren't including fall of the samurai because that one is incredibly replayable.
    actually beyond egypt I don't have much issue with your picks, I'm just amazed that ETW isn't here and have to assume that you have simply forgotten because you have spent so little time with it.

    I played Alexander more than Barbarian Invasion. If my Rome 2 campaign got 300 hours, Alexander got around 200 to 225 hours. Lot you can do once you make all factions playable in Alexander campaign and rename them to be more accurate such as Persia = Achaemenid Empire, etc.
