Countdown was a dry, serious British quiz show with a mainly older audience. As a one-off event for charity, the comedians from the quiz show, 8 out of 10 Cats decided to do their own version of Countdown. It ended up being so hilarious that a whole series was commissioned, and 8 years later they were still doing it.

It seems that whenever Claudia Winkleman was a guest on the show, Sean Lock would tell jokes that had her in tears, and that would always spur him on to go even further.

Countdown is a Channel 4 daytime quiz show, Susie Dent and Rachael Riley are on it, Rachael took over from Carol Vorderman (you often hear Jimmy refer to her). 8 out of 10 Cats is a Channel 4 evening comedy panel show.
One day a lot of shows did other shows, X Does Y (even other channels shows) for "Stand Up To Cancer" SU2C.
8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown was such a laugh they kept making it.
The R.N.L.I is the Royal National Lifeboat Institution which is a 200 year old charity manned by volunteers (you can watch a program called "Saving Lives at Sea", not a comedy obviously).
Claudia Winkleman is very popular in the UK, she presents "Strictly Come Dancing" (Dancing with the Stars in US). She is better known here than her half sister Sophie Winkleman who was in Peep Show with David Mitchell, Rob Webb, Olivia Coleman and others. Sophie was also in Red Dwarf.
You should check out Mitchell and Webb stuff (comedy sketch shows) BTW.
Sean and Bill Baily were really good friends. You may have seen Bill on EOOTCDC with Sean.
Hope this helps with understanding the TV landscape and some of the references.

We could forever dispute who was/is the best comedian. I don't think there ever can be an answer.
But if I had we had to choose the comedian fastest on his feet with off-the-cuff hilarity, the unquestionable answer would be Sean. I think this is why be was such a gift to panel shows.
His gift went beyond humour to a Narnia-like realm he could snatch concepts from in a second. Concepts we might all have thought of - given a week or two.

8 out of ten cats is a show based on polls and surveys, with comedians telling jokes. The name comes from the whiskas ads, I believe. The slogan was “8 out of ten owners said their cats preferred whiskas”’ or something like that. Countdown is a just a show about numbers and letters, watched predominantly by retired people and students, but it has a kind of ironic, cult following among the general population. “Cats does countdown” was supposed to be a one-off mash-up for a charity fundraiser, (Comic Relief maybe), but was so popular, they kept it.

Countdown is an Afternoon quiz show on Channel 4; its launched the day Channel 4 did in 1982. Rachel Riley and Suzie Dent are also on the main program, Suzie since 1992 and Rachel since 2009 (when she replaced Carol Vorderman who had been on it since 1982 and was let go; hence the jokes they sometimes make about Carol at Rachel's expense). Countdown is a Letters and Numbers game. For the Letters game contestants must make the longest word out of 9 Letters, for the Numbers game Contestants must calculate a random 3 digit number using 6 numbers. This is a serious show with viewers playing along at home. There is no deliberate humour there; and anything accidentally hilarious is not highlighted (Such as when a contestant made the word Panties, leaving an N and an O unused on the board, leaving the board behind Rachel saying No Panties)
8 out of 10 Cats was a topical panel show presented by Jimmy Carr with team captains Sean Lock and John Richardson (though not initially). 8 out of 10 cats is a quote from a Cat food advert that 8 out of 10 cats preferred Whiskers cat food. The Show was topical, based on the news that week and focused on statistic; but is generally just comedians telling jokes to a back drop of questions about statistics in the news. Viewers don't watch to play along at home they watch to be entertained by the jokes.
8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown was originally a cross over show with the Comedians from 8 out of 10 cats playing Countdown in a one off special to celebrate Channel 4's 30th birthday. It was successful and an additional one off was commissioned followed by a mini-series and then full series'. As Cats does Countdown is not topical it doesn't need to be recorded the week of broadcast which makes it cheaper to run than the original. The actual Countdown part of the show takes up perhaps 10 minutes of the hour long show; and Jimmy Carr normally adds in some visual comedy to ensure the audience doesn't get too bored during the time that the game is actually played. If I recall 20-25 minutes of the show is spent on the introductions of the contestants; which is where all of the clips you have watched come from and is the funniest bit

Yes there were 2 shows, 8 out of 10 cats a panel show based around current affairs, what people might be talking about in the street. Going back to watch episodes it does date itself quite strongly. Countdown was the first show broadcast on Channel for when it started airing in 1982, and has run continuously ever since then. 8 out of 10 cats is the exact same show with the 8 out of 10 cats panel transplanted into it. Rachel and Suzy both appear on the original Countdown show as well as the 8 out of 10 cats variant. Jimmy does not.

  • @noah1gulfbreeze

8 Out Of 10 Cats vs 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown: 8 Out Of 10 Cats -older comedian panel show (teams used to be captained by Jon Rchardson and Sean Lock) trying to guess (and riffing) on topics that were results of surveys of the British public each week. Name of the show is a reference to the reliance on surveys and the old Whiskas cat food ads that had the tag line "8 out of 10 cats love Whiskas". It's still on but the team captains are different now (obviously). Countdown is a long playing daytime British game show not too dissimilar to Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune in terms of expected audience (older, parents and grandparents, etc ---hence the references to Rachel Riley's likely impact on their 'normal' audience). Several years ago, to fill a later evening timespot, they tried a mashup of the two shows -- the basic format of Countdown with the comedians from 8 Out of 10 Cats -- hence the name "...does Countdown". The first shows only had Jon and Sean (as Coundown normally only has two contestants at a time) but they adjustd it to 'teams'. As you've discovered, the mashup was an enormous hit. Now -- start reacting to some of the QI BBC programs!
