Sean first became my hero during that moment with Rory McGrath; he was the ONLY ONE who didn't let McGrath get away with his showing off and generally condescending attitude to everyone else on that particular show. His was a special kind of comedic anarchy, and he was a master at it. RIP, Sean.
Expressing knowledge shouldn't be classified as showing off. That's a mark of wilful ignorance and anti-intellectualism.
McGrath asked for the answers before hand, and was allowed such because most of the guests ask for a couple to form jokes around as it’s just a bit of fun in the end. But Rory just used it to answer EVERY question right. And while Fry’s hands were tied, Sean’s weren’t.

@@Ranger1812 as already mentioned, Rory asked for the questions beforehand, and he researched uninteresting facts related to those questions so he could seem smart, which is pretty pathetic... But even if he didn't "cheat" in this way, it still wouldn't be anti-intellectual to make fun of his behaviour.
It's not the least bit intellectual to memorise pointless trivia about latin terms and to reel them off in a comedy show, to the boredom of everyone.
If anything it shows a complete lack of intellect, in that only a fool would think that anyone would find his uninteresting recitals impressive.

I still can't believe it. People are always saying "Which celebrity death hit you the hardest?", expecting Elvis or someone like that. For me, Sean Lock is way up there. I'm really disappointed that I didn't see him live before he died.

Sean Lock was such a great comedian that he actually managed to make a Rory McGrath episode funny.

The funny thing about Sean going off on Rory about his bird knowledge is that Sean was actually a bit of a bird watcher and would regularly holiday with Bill Bailey... But as many people said he was the ultimate contrarian.
Because he was intelligent enough to know the difference between an interesting conversation and verbal masturbation. I'm pretty knowledgeable about some topics but I wouldn't completely interrupt the conversation so that everyone could listen to me prattle on minutiae of details like an encyclopedia. Rory was just being a prick and was called out on it.
@@Dendarang And Stephen, being of a similar personality, was in a verbal masturbation competition with him. That conversation would likely have gone on for ages if Sean hadn't stepped in with his antics.
@@felisd I don't know that that's fair to Fry. He was just trying to explain the difference between 'the latin' for a species, and what people who actually spoke latin called it. His point made, I think he'd have moved on.
@@WalterLiddy No, it was perfectly fair. He immediately went to the defense of another know-it-all. If you recall a previous episode with Jimmy Carr (can't recall which one) where Fry was trying to tell an overly long serious story and Jimmy keeps making jokes about it. Fry got really pissed off, which made it better from my point of view.
My favorite quip of his is when he called Bill Bailey the Dalai Farmer.
My fav was on 8oo10c about the Scottish referendum: ‘we should sell it off. So like it’ll be called the O2 Highlands.’

It was in that arena that he proved he's not only a hilarious comic, but a bona fide genius.

Honestly, the way he handled McGrath was just *chef's kiss*, counter-acting pompous verbal diarrhoea with pure physical comedy. Gone far too young.
McGrath is an arsehole who also (allegedly) cheated on They Think It's All Over. I like someone spotting it very quickly and coming up with a deliberately silly way to provide the audience with something better.
The comedians are given a few questions to come up with material ahead of time but more use it to craft "spontaneous" jokes rather than try to win a competition where nobody really cares about the points. The best guests are those who are actually smart/witty & come up with knowledge/entertainment on the rest of the show.
Rumored to be one of a couple of guests who insisted on getting the questions in advance so that they could research stuff ahead of time. So Sean shutting him down straight away was definitely appropriate.

Honestly, the "Dalai Farmah" remark honestly is the most genius remark I've ever heard anyone think of right on the spot. It's often seen as Bill Bailey's highlight but honestly, the final slam dunk is the thing that clearly makes it as memorable as it is.
I'm sure not everyone will agree but Sean will forever hold the top spot of most genius impromptu remark ever during any show like this.

Sean Lock knew and understood that they're all on this panel show to make people laugh and be entertaining, whereas I think McGrath was so focused on showing off how much stuff he knew that he kinda forgot that! Read the room Rory!

As an American I had just recently discovered 8 out of 10 Cats, QI and all the other shows Sean has been on just a few years ago. I remember fondly binge watching every video I could find on youtube and just how quickly Sean became one of my favorite comedians EVER. He will sorely be missed.

Dam Sean, didn’t think I’d get hit so hard by a strangers death. Watching all these shows after school in Australia when I was 16 helped me deal with a lot of loneliness I wasn’t fully understanding of how to address at the time. The way Sean carried on through his final days with a smile and joke ready, all while dealing with his imminent death is a testimony to his character and strength.

When I heard the news, I was glad i was in the middle of nowhere, because the scream rattled my car windows. Such a tremendous loss. Thank you for everything Sean.
Started looking for this as soon as I heard the news, RIP Sean Lock what an amazing guy
They say this every time someone passes who are awesome. But there will never be another Sean Lock, his wisdom, his comedy, his whole view on life cannot be replaced.
He had a way of playing an absurd kind of jazz but with words and images. He really was a genius, and, as others have mentioned, we are poorer without his presence.
That's a brilliant description, and maybe explains why other comedians admired him so much.
Sometimes even if you can't guess the punchline, you can timewhen and where it will land. With Sean you often got blindsided by his ideas, and before you'd realised it he was off in another direction. Genius.
That ending was *Perfection*
Having Sean in any show always lifted the mood and got a giggle. RIP Sean.

I hope there is never a final season. I love QI. Cats and QI are how I was introduced to Sean Lock. I started binge watching all the episodes after I found the shows and will sorely miss Sean on them.

The moment where Sean is pulled off his chair and falls down is actually a stroke of comedic genius on his part. His chair started to lift off the ground and he saw that if he was pulled harder it would completely go over, so he egged Brian on to fall and give us that comedy gold!
The way he just accepted his fate and fell had me in tears laughing!
Poor guy... you never know what people are dealing with privately. We lost a shining star in this man, rest in peace.

Damn, only found QI in Jan 2022. Sean was one of the first who stood out the most. Will be missed
It was a formative moment in my appreciation of comedy when I realised Sean was my favourite QI regular. Every time he was on, he came out with something that has lodged deep in my head all these years later. Not just the big laugh moments, and there are many of those, but the little throwaway remarks as well. E.g. “I’m gonna be so rich” which I still say whenever I have a daft idea. I hope his family and friends can at least take some solace from the outpouring of love and respect that has followed the terrible news. We will not see another like him again.
Such a joyous light has gone out. Tears of sadness and laughter, Sean. RIP

I was genuinely saddened when I heard of Sean's passing. RIP Sean ... :,-(
Still can't believe Shaun is gone he was such a genuine nice and funny bloke a propper geezer I seen him once in Coventry and said hello thinking id get ignored as he was busy with what I don't know but he still said hello and wished me a good day no matter how much fame Tv give him it never turned him ignorant like most lost a true legend
What about the one where Jeremy Clarkson was talking about strange things he'd eaten & Sean piped up with the classic "Have you tried one of my turds?"
One never knows the true worth of a human being, until he/she leaves us forever.

You can do. You just have to decide to. Try it, look at someone in a new way, appreciate them before they are gone, it's a much better use of your time :-)
Sean Lock is honestly the first comedian that made me do the silent crying laugh just from his rants. He truly broke me with something he did on 8 out of 10 cats does countdown. I will truly miss this amazing person.
