Tbh Drakengard's best combat was always with the dragons. That said I'd rather anything besides drakengards combat. lol But it teaches you the true pain of the story being worth it
pff, that's not an anime trope ever read the wheel of time series? they could probably have cut out 3 or 4 books if the characters all just sat down together and explained to each other what they were trying to do
"Remember Drakengard 1???" ".... No, that game was a hard M, this one's like a T. A lot of the playerbase probably doesn't even know what happened in the origin-" "Fuck you, I'm back, bitch! Let the slaughter continue!!!"
Making Caim the antagonist is such a cool fucking idea and it's handled really well in that he's essentially the same guy he always was, the only thing that's changed is that you're in his way this time. Shame everything else is dick though. Not like Drakengard had much going on in the gameplay department anyway, so shitting out a sub-par plot means there's fuck all left to enjoy.
Heck... I'm gonna play D2 for the 4th time just to save the game right before fighting Angelus. Seriously that boss fight was legendary, for all the good reason. Funny that the thing I like most about D2 are the D1 protagonist that got turned into enemies ^_^
Drakengard 2 is worthy of existing just because Caim literally kills death, which is cool as fuck. Was also pretty awesome going back to Caim's castle and fighting the skeletons of the dead union soldiers.
I like how when Caim, destroyer of fucking worlds, just pops in and I just thought: FINALLY, MAYBE NOWE WILL DIE! Seriously, how much better would this game have been if the point was to switch to Caim's point of view as you destroy the principal cast the game spent all that time building up. Now THAT would have been Drakengard. I just like bad guys, so sue me.
Coming back to this, I realize one of the points of removing the weight on dragon flight. Angelus was all about overwhelming her opponents with pure strength. Legna was more agile than her, so it makes sense that he moves more swiftly in 2. He overwhelms enemies with his speed
Fun fact: In Japanese game development, a Producer/Executive Producer does the things that in the West is done by a Director. Directors are more of a managerial position. So the Producer would have the most control/responsibility of the overall structure of the game.
in my opinion I think that changing the environment was good because if u think about it for a bet throughout drakengard u were playing during the war between the union and the empire so it's logical for the environment to be depressing the way it was but in drakengard 2 the plot starts 18 years after the war is over and the world could be called at a state of peace so it does fit to see trees grow and villages with inhabitants in my opinion
I know you're not going to read this, but thank you for making a Drakengard retrospective and giving 2 as much attention as the others, people made great effort to make it an interesting game. Are people who skip 2 drakengard fans, or just Yoko Taro fans? Even if it doesn't feel like the first one, it's reportedly Canon (as is EVERYTHING in this world)
Yaaaaaaas. Your production values are so good Clempy poo. I have been loving your new videos. They make me interested in games I am not actually interested in!
ok im not disagreeing with you on nowe asking to many questions but, after watching these videos i went and played the games again and form what i found reading weapon data and looking into the story. Well nowe asks these questions cause he was never told about this stuff in the first place. General Oro trained nowe and helped him learn to protect himself, but nowe never really left that training facility during that time so he was kind of a shut in. NO one else was telling him things because they were either bullies or didn't talk to nowe in general. Then Gismor becomes general and obviously he wants nowe to stay in the dark to make it easier to take him down when the time comes. So it is sadly a poor and somewhat stupid character design for nowe at least from what i could tell.
I keep coming back to this series of videos because your content always has the ability to bring me out of a depressive funk, and every time that opening gives me chills and makes me tear up.
I work at a company where a bunch of our focus is rereleasing old games and sometimes when i play them im like “why did people like this” and i really appreciate your love for an old game and explaining how you loved it and i just will never truly understand it and thats ok!
I freakin love you. I played through this game like 4 times for all the endings and it drove me crazy. seeing your review making fun of the parts that I hated makes me feel better about myself
I wasn't expecting anything from this video but I ended up getting emotionally invested to hunch like immediately with that death scene oh, it was a genuinely good scene
I discovered this game on the Something Awful Let's Play forums many years ago. Generic anime cliches without the original's sheer balls to the walls insanity and violent hate-fetish for humankind in general, made it disappointing to say the least.
+Tim Fukyù Well considering that I can find barely 10 mods for Arkham Knight, a game that let's you play as Batman, but 40,000 mods for a game that is about shouting at dragons, I would say that an action-rpg dripping in stock fantasy cliches sells. Incidentally, why not check out our Dragon Age let's play.
The cutscene begins and I'm wondering where my man Caim is... little did I know... he was right there with his huge freaking smirk! Doing what a Caim does best... Ah I love this... I blame you Clemps, thank you i'm addicted now
I remember being very young playing this game on the ps2 and never being able to get past the ogre battle at the beginning. in fact my little sister and my older brother couldn't either. I seem to recall it being a mixture of just being way too young and bad at games + a bug where some of the controls didn't work properly so I spent 30 minutes trying to get on the dragon but not being able to. :'D Not that I really want to ever play it now but it's interesting refinding it.
This story is much better than I expected. It's tinged with JRPG cliches, but I appreciate the characters, politics, and worldbuilding. The biggest flaw of Drakengard 1 is that, outside of the main characters, it felt like literally nothing else existed. It lacked a lot of context. Even some of the main cast felt way under developed (Arioch in particular. Why was she even with them?)
8:48 I know this might be me interpreting too much into it and yes this is just a general story overview but: Does anyone else think of post-war Germany? It would kinda make sense to give a nudge to it as Japan and Germany were close with each other and shared a very similar fate after the war but with Japan not being enslaved (or rather straight up being a Bondage pet) like Germany
i like that the village at the hallowed water district is in the way of the river they all intend to let flow freely throughout the land, good going nowe
I kind of liked the Drakengard 2, it was a bit disappointing compared to the original, i kind of expected more madness and bloodbath. I kind of liked Caim and Angelus part, though, could be more of them. I didn't really feel as attached to the Nove, Legna or Manah, as i was to the first ones. Caim just felt like this very powerful character. (Urick, is cool though)
The publisher only gets the game out in different regions. I would only associate quality to the dev team/studio. So Ubi did a solid in this case, by making sure another region saw this more niche title.
The weird thing about them lightening the tone and content of the game is that, while it had a lower age rating in the PEGI and CERO systems, the ESRB still made it M like the first game, so I never got to try these games as a kid. Hopefully, I can get a chance some time in the future. Even if 2's story is weaker, I'm a big fan of Dynasty Warriors Ace Combat anyway.
I always thought Sir Yaha sounded like British Elijah Wood (Frodo) on Vallium. But Seymour is also an apt comparison. On that note, tell me Hanch isn't just Mrs. Lovett.
Manah's emotionless personality actually makes a lot of sence, she fucked everything up in the first one for being an emtionally fagile little twat, so she's either been hardened enough that she dosn't bother expressing them or theyve been shattered entierly making it impossible to express them, either way...what the fuck did Caim do to this girl?! shes borderline traumatised when she sees him again. I think he might have put her under some severe yet somehow constructive emotional abuse considering she basically made him loose His pact partner dragon, best friend and Sister. just sayin but from Caims point of view; Manah is getting exactly what she deserves.
Good review so far! Have to acknowledge that the voice acting was more problematic than I remembered, lol. So far that may be my biggest gripe with the actual game so far--first one didn't really need great voice actors to get across the despair of the story, while the second game's more optimistic setting really needs more support than what we're given with characters like Hannah's V.A. Still, I do really dig the new stylistic choice as a complement to Drakengard's insanely bleak world. Even Berserk has some moments and times of humor and brightness, so it's nice to see the world of Drakengard from a less jaded perspective.
JXZX1 A lot of the first game's voice acting was bad too I mean I still can't take the watchers or Inuart or even Caim's which is why he didn't talk much!xD ps2 era had some ups and downs in voice acting.
Anyone knows the song that plays on urick's reveal? it plays at around 16:55 , i searched through the drakengard 2 OST on youtube but couldnt find it, please help!
Funny to see people commenting on the history of the game being bad or weak. But I'm writing this in 2018 and we never get games that deliver this kind of single-player narrative. The market is only about Battle Royales and multiplayer games now (with the exception of the new GOW). If you played and did not like the story, okay, you have this right. But if you've never played the game completely, how can you complain by saying that the story is weak? Both Drakengard 1 and 2 have a complex narrative that can not be fully understood by playing simply once. My opinion is that if they do a reboot of the series, as they did with GOW (if they manage to make 60% similar) it would be a great success
Drakengard 2 had a much better gameplay compared to the first game but Jesus the story is dissapointing... even if it was cliche the ending was rushed as hell.
Legna is the GOAT dragon. I loved him when I played this game over a decade ago after beating the 1st game and found Angelus a typical mysterious dragon.
"What would a Drakengard game be without a Dragon?" Nier.

pff, that's not an anime trope
ever read the wheel of time series?
they could probably have cut out 3 or 4 books if the characters all just sat down together and explained to each other what they were trying to do
Ya mean media trope
Pretty sure that trope is not anime only
unfortunately this is literally how real life works, people basically fighting over miscommunication
it suuuuuuuuuuuuuucks
I mean its a trope cause its super real.
Caim's entrance in a nutshell: "Hey everyone I'm Guts now, is that cool?"
well guts is pretty cool

Of fucking course Caim. Hell, you can be our protagonist again.
+Check Point sure he will

Kire-Kitsune Do I detect a fellow despiser of Nowe?
It's your preference. Still pretty weird.
i know this comment is years old but actually?? you're so right. let caim hijack the narrative and put the drakengard essence back
Well, at least Caim was enjoying himself.
AzureZero "No..., help me..."

Is there an echo in here? 17:54 😒
When you show dialogue in this game I keep thinking it's you impersonating the characters then I remember that that is how it actually sounds haha
I love Legna being consistently done with everyone's shit ; relatable, honestly
Coming back to this, I realize one of the points of removing the weight on dragon flight.
Angelus was all about overwhelming her opponents with pure strength. Legna was more agile than her, so it makes sense that he moves more swiftly in 2. He overwhelms enemies with his speed
"Tell her you were poisoned by Gismor."
How much would the plot change if he just did that from the start?
Soooooo so much
@@MrDaimeonnot much really since she's utterly fucking stupid. She wouldn't believe him
I don't know if this means anything deeper, but at a glance the Drakengard 2 cover looks like a Kingdom Hearts cover to me.
Also Pat sent me here.
What do you mean, I don't get it, maybe it's the anime boy
Maybe because Nowe looks like a grown up 15th Century Sora?
I just think of it as British Sora in the Drakengard world. It makes the entire game make much more sense
@@GPhipps that's actually funny. I made that distinction after getting into KH not too long ago

That Caim reveal was straight up ripped from Berserk.
"No... Help me...."
Wow. Way to get how dire the situation is across to the audience. What a gripping performance.
Caim: absolutely lovin' this shit.

Exactly! Or some other Star Wars character. Maybe the Elder God from Soul Reaver, but a bit lighter.

In the English version, Legna is voiced by Stephen Greif. In the Japanese version he's voiced by Yoshio Harada.
