    to play these suites is to celebrate Bach's genius. the magic is taking the notes off the page and placing them on the keyboard. as listeners we enjoy genius and magic working together in real time. bravo Bach and Schiff.

There is only one sphere, the Bach spirit through a magic sharing and incredible humility and compassion for human kind. The way I feel Andras Schiff: an apostle.

    I used to be of the opinion that only God, God's works, and the abstract ideas of circles and spheres etc. are perfect. The tree is perfect, the mountain is perfect, the river is perfect but not the works of man. They are close, but not quite. I was wrong. The music of JS Bach is perfect in the same way that the tree the mountain and the river are perfect. And András Schiff can express this perfection, perfectly.

    Bach is like some sort of godlike being. Utterly brilliant. He really can make one feel there's a loving Creative force underlying all reality, a force that actually cares about us, and about everything. And one could say much the same of Schiff. He truly does Bach justice.

      The music inspires and uplifts. If you really want there to be "a loving Creative force underlying all reality, a force that actually cares about us", then it will feel like it. I couldn't see in a million years how you get this kind of assumption from music, great as it may be, unless it's what you've been _taught_ to associate with it. And that's not tangible at all. I think the idea diminishes Bach's achievements.

      mckavitt13 somebody asked me what I think about Andras Schiff playing and this what I responded with, it basically explains everything
      Terrible. Like mostly every other modern pianist (Pollini, Perahia, and others). He does nothing interesting to music and just plays exactly what the score says and not only that he also plays everything the same, he can’t switch from one emotion to another, he can’t change his playing depending on the composer, he can’t add anything interesting to the music. Is this really what classical music is about? I just listened to Tatina Nikolayeva play this and THAT is music, great interpretation by a great pianist!

  • @charles.e.g.
    @charles.e.g. Год назад +12

    My absolute favorite Bach interpreter. His playing is so clear and precise. He NEVER uses the sostenuto pedal to create legato phrasing. This is so tempting because their are so many complex contrapuntal lines occurring simultaneously. And many lesser performers fall victim to this trap. But Schiff understands that pedaling will only blur and muddy the lines. So he uses his fingering to do all of this. And it is extraordinarily difficult. But he always makes it look so effortless. I have mad respect for this man and his consummate artistry. 🙏

    • @tehPuulz
      @tehPuulz Год назад +1

      I allow myself to respond since your comment is focused on it but he does use the pedal to create legato while playing bach, like at 13:30 or in his live performances of the whole WTC, Goldbergs, Italian concerto..., like everyone who's playing Bach on a piano (Gould, Richter, Pogorelich, Ashkenazy,...), you can see/hear it for Gould playing the Emajor fugue book 2 or the AoF on youtube you'll see his right foot working.
      Maybe what you meant was pressing the pedal and hold it for a few seconds which can indeed hurt the clarity in Bach but I never heard such pedaling except for HJ Lim live performance of WTC1 or Feinberg recordings and I wouldn't call them lesser pianists.
      Cheers

      @@spicy7302 : You’re quite right in some respects. This was a concert given in Budapest, Hungary, in Feb. 2011. Not in Wigmore Hall. Confirm this by watching from the very beginning, where it says so. It was after that 2011 concert that the ruckus erupted. Schiff experienced, as everyone visiting Hungary nowadays does, the regenerated anti-Semitism and anti-Roma attitudes and behaviour. Hungary was about to become something special in the EU, and Schiff wrote to the authorities wondering whether Hungary was ready for this, given its extreme right-wing policies. CRASH. Hungary and Hungarians have not ever forgiven him for this, and nationalists threatened to cut off his hands if he should ever again set foot in that country. So he didn’t, and probably will not ever do so. And that is it. (You will recall, if you have been at the Wigmore, that it doesn’t look anything like this concert hall! Nor does it have this capacity.) Hope you don’t mind my being such a know-it-all. :)
