RIP Jack Kehler, who plays the Dudes’ landlord; he passed away about a week ago. I always love the Coen brothers ability to create memorable side characters even if they play minor roles.
Couldn't agree more. They are masters of side characters with HUGE character even for tiny screen time.
@@Diegesis please react to The Mask Of Zorro (1998) it's directed by Martin Campbell who directed two of the best James Bond movies Goldeneye (1995) & Casino Royale (2006). It stars Antonio Banderas, Sir Anthony Hopkins, & Catherine Zeta-Jones.
@@Swampthing86 Wow, way to hijack a thread about a mans passing to request a movie.
@@robr135 oops I didn't even read the top part. Sorry about that. That was really insensitive of me.
@@Swampthing86 All good, if its a mistake its understandable.
All the clothes that Jeff Bridges wore in this movie where his own personal clothes from home. Including the jelly sandals.
Actors always get the chance for that one role they can never eclipse - this is Bridges.
"Nobody fucks with the Jesus!" That alone is worth the price of admission.
Jesus's outfit really ties that scene together :)
"Click"
They actually spun that off into an entire movie. A bridge too far unfortunately.
“That and a pair of testicles.” -The Dude.
Pretty much every new person who meets The Dude throughout this movie calls him some variation of his real name; Jeff, Jeffrey, Mr. Lebowski, etc. About the only exception is Brandt, the other Lebowski’s butler. It makes me laugh hearing him call him “Dude” all the time.
That’s because Brandt is a consummate professional.
Phillip Seymour-Hoffman was such a gem.
Out of all the movies Phillip Seymour hoffman has been in, this is the one that makes me the most sad about his death. He had such a talent for so many different characters. He will always be remembered, for sure.
Fun Fact: The reason that Walter is always telling Donnie to “shut the fuck up” is a poke at Buscemi’s character from Fargo who never stopped talking.
Another fun fact: There are youtube videos which note that nobody but Walter ever SPEAKS to Donnie -- and it's theorized that Donnie is Walter's "imaginary friend." The dude responds ONCE to Donnie, when he thanks Donnie for noting that his phone was ringing, as he begins to walk home after seeing his car was stolen. This is taken as a mocking "acknowledgment" of Walter's imaginary friend. Even at the "funeral" at the end, the dude has nothing to say regarding Donnie. EDIT: Oh, and, it's also pointed out that the bowling teams seem to consist of TWO members, not three. Certainly, Jesus and his friend seem to be the only two on his team.
@@GetMeThere1 That’s a really interesting theory! I had never heard that before.
@@GetMeThere1 Mind blown.
@@GetMeThere1 Would that make the cowboy, The dudes imaginary friend?
@@lasmoker67 That's an interesting point. Thanks for putting it out there.
In my opinion, the best writing moment Joel and Ethan ever had was Donnie mistaking Lenin for Lennon. That's just grade A.
"I am the walrus..."
Well, that's, like your opinion, man.
I had never heard of the song "I am the walrus" before. In the French version of the movie, Donnay says "Sergeant Pepper", probably because I am the walrus isn't well known outside the US and England.
@@pmarquisYT That’s very interesting
That's fucking interesting
The woman who had her toe cut off was played by Aimee Mann, the lead singer from Til Tuesday (mega popular 80's band)... I have seen this movie over a dozen times and this is the first time I noticed it was her... wow.
And the little nihilist is Flea, bass player for the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
@@jacksonbelow6882 Holy fuck how did i never know that
@Michael Ironsights He's kind of easy to miss without a bass in his hands. 🤘
Smokey was played by Jimmy Dale Gilmore. He did a couple pretty good albums.
Damn never knews, just watched magnolia again today to and she does the soundtrack
So the TV safe version of Walter's greatest line is *"This is what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps"* and I fucking love it.
Dude, tv edits are the best lol I watched scarface on TV once when I was younger and the line "how'd you get those scars, eating pineapple?" Has been stuck in my head ever since lol
@@fthomason93 Oh, yeah I fucking love them. That Scarface one is solid. 😆 My most favorite is one heard watching Snakes on a Plane.
*"I'm tired of these monkey-fried snakes on this Monday to Friday train!"*
@@MontgomeryWenis I haven't heard that but that's fn hilarious
if only they had special edition releases that contain the tv edit as a bonus
That would be great! I don't get cable, but hope I can find that version online sometime.
The main thing you need to understand about this movie is that the plot essentially means nothing because it resolves itself at the end. Ultimately, it's about the quirky, bizarre characters and endlessly quotable dialogue. Supposedly, the characters are based on real people that the Coen brothers personally knew. Sadly, the guy who played The Dude's landlord passed away just last week.
The main theme during the entire movie is how society treats people who are usually classified as outsiders or losers. The Big Lebowski is one of the most funniest movies I know but its actually also a pretty sad movie. Comedy and Tragedy are two sides of a coin and the Coens are absolute master of combining them. The movie is a masterpiece.
this movie is a modern deconstruction of a film noir. Watch some film noir then watch this, it literally is a film noir turned inside out and upside down. and it's even funnier for it. not a lot of people laugh at the detective bit, but to me (who is a fan of film noir) that's one the funnier scenes in the movie.
Huge thumbs up for including and recognizing the humor of the toilet scene punch line ("...it's down there somewhere"). I've seen a number of reactions that leave this line out.
That goes over a lot of peoples heads, not to sound arrogant lol
It’s a great line. One of my favorites is “the toilet seats up”
One of the most quotable movies ever, and, the defining role of John Goodman's career.
In my experience the defining role of John Goodman‘s career was on Roseanne, which may be generational . It’s evolved from there to where he’s an icon known for lots of different roles.
@@chemquests definitely roseanne
You're out of your element!!!
Well that's just like your opinion, man.
The Dude abides.
My dirty undies, Dude.
Laundry.
*THE WHITES.*
8 year Olds, Dude...
I asked a mortician about this, and yeah it happens. He was politic in saying "Everybody grieves differently", but the message was yes, folks come in with coffee cans to pick up ashes.
Respect is something you earn in life and is not multiplied in death. Sometimes it is about cost, and sometimes it is about what is deserved.
@@theelvenwtich You don't get to decide what another person deserves. But I see nothing wrong with a coffee can anyway. Just because we're bereaved doesn't make us saps.
@@jaypee9575 What in your mind unqualifies Sasquatch here from deciding for himself, what someone else deserves? Are you saying that you are the lone arbiter of what someone deserves, or only the one judged can themselves be their own judge? This is utterly moronic.
@@raifthemad Judge not lest ye be judged. It's ancient and basic wisdom. No one is all knowing and wise enough to decide what someone else deserves.
Donny's ashes are not in a coffee can because it is some sort of act of disrespect that he deserves. It's simply the action Walt chose to take. He can choose his own action, but he can not justifiably claim that it is what Donny deserved, as implied by Sasquatch.
@@jaypee9575 Everyone judges everyone, I know of no-one, that gives the exact same amount of affection to everyone else for example. And I was not talking about the movie, but the "You are not the one to judge" silliness, that these days has found its way into, culture debate in the "every culture is equal" garbage mindvirus. I don't find anything wrong with a coffe can either. Who I would judge harshly in that situation, are the leeches, trying to take advantage of grieving people to rob them blind.
Fun facts: The Dude never bowls in the whole movie. Donnie always gets a strike except the last time before he dies. The F bomb is dropped no less than 280 times.
This is one of those movies i feel that literally everyone needs to watch at least once in their life. i don't even care if they don't like it, as long as they watched it.
This is one of the rare comedies that gets funnier the more you watch it. A perfect script. Melodic and quotable.
Donny was never upset with Walter no matter how bad he was treated by him. Took them nihilists to make him feel unsafe.
one of the few movies that get better the more you watch it.
This movie is pure nostalgia for me, my dad loved it. When I was young I didnt really understand why but now I think its hilarious. The John Goodman character is legendary.
I actually paid to watch this in the theater about 5 or 6 times. I simply could not get enough of it. A truly amazing trip and I didn't even have to do drugs to enjoy it. Fun watching it through your eyes. It seems the Coen brothers don't know how to make a bad film.
Y'all be safe.
How did John Goodman not get nominated for a Oscar for this movie? He was so good he steals every scene he is in.
Turning people into The Big Lebowski is akin to smoking weed or eating mushrooms with a newbie for the first time. It’s such a classic, I just like to watch people enjoy it for the first time. It’s in my top 3. Right there with O Brother Where Art Thou and Tombstone.
I've seen SO many of these reactions, and your edits were SO good - captured all of the great scenes. Thank you!
I forgot that Flea was one of the nihilists! 🤣
Ariana and Maple are such beautiful and down to earth women, it's always a blast watching their reactions. Keep up the great work guys
yeah they are
Stop simpin
👍Maple
Yea 9/10 would smash
"Have you ever heard of Vietnam? You're about to enter a world of pain."
Best line I've ever heard in my life.
"Let me explain something to you, I'm not Mr. Lebowski, you're Mr. Lebowski, I'm The Dude. You call at least call me Duder his Royal Dudeness or El Duderino." Lol!!
If you're going to quote something, can you at least put the effort in to actually get it correct?
So refreshing to watch a reaction vid with someone who gets it.
I will never forget watching this movie with my friends in High School and College literally dozens of times. The endless number of quotes that are so easy to drop into nearly any regular conversation make it so memorable. I love the Coen's movies but this is by far their best work imo, which is hilarious considering it's a completely incoherent, rather meaningless story -- the insane and bizarre personalities of the characters are themselves the story.
Often, I ask myself these days, in tense situations, "What would 'The Dude' do?"
You know, that rug really did tie the room together
"The Dude's" clothes were legit from Jeff Bridges' wardrobe.
18:58, the short guy on the left is Flea the bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers
This movie rewards multiple rewatchings. You find some new detail to laugh at each time.
In hospital recovering for having an appendix removal and a chuffed to bits that I can lay and watch my most favorite film of all time with you ❤️ your reaction is priceless. This is a difficult film to follow and the script in this so clever its a must watch twice. This is truly a cult vlassic and has been since its inception. I'm so glad the next generation are now appreciating these gems. Love💜
Here's to your recovery being smooth and fast :D
@@Diegesis 💜💜💜
No one ever comments on the bag phone, which was the state of the art in cell phone tech back then. They didnt work worth a crap, but sometimes they did, so we all bought them.
Still one of the greatest comedies of all time.
One of my favorite movies of all time ! Fun fact Leboski is in every scene of this movie and the one he isn't you can see his car in the background
You'll need to watch this 100 more times. Each time you watch you'll pick up on something different. Great movie.
I know this is an old comment, but I totally agree. Just the other day, I realized that the nihilists were wearing red and carrying black handled scissors because Maude had a painting of those scissors on a red background in her studio.
When John Goodman got his Star on the Hollywood walk of Fame Jeff Bridges came to the ceremony and performed as "The Dude" his speech saluting Goodman !
The diner where the waitress comes over and asks Walter to hold his voice down is the same diner from Pulp Fiction.
Arianna's hair looks AMAZING! #jealous
That's a good reaction. And thorough.
Welcome to a WHOLE new way of communicating with your other friends who love The Big Lebowski -- quoting lines from this movie.
Also, this movie NEVER gets old.
I love the callbacks in this film. "You see what happens," used by the guy at the beginning, later by Walter when he's destroying "Larry's" car; "parlance of our times," used by Maude, and later cribbed by The Dude; "this aggression will not stand," used by President Bush, later used by The Dude when he's paying a visit to The Big Lebowski; Walter's "the Chinaman is not the issue here," later, we see similar use by The Big Lebowski: "my wife is not the issue here"; when The Dude threatens to cut Larry's dick off when others made that same threat to him -- and there are probably MANY, MANY more. Just brilliant.
The coens love that type of line repetition
One of the most re-watchable movies of all time. This movie will survive everything.
John Goodman absolutely creases me in this film! "Smokey, this is not 'Nam. This is bowling - there are rules..." Cryin! XD And when they empty Donnies ashes - oh my days! LOOOOOL
Oh if you watched more Coen Bros. movies, you would be doing yourself and us grateful viewers much service! They have an incredible filmogrphy, both hysterical and tensely dramatic.
Burn After Reading is such an underrated gem. Every scene with Brad Pitt is perfect, especially his final scene.
@@MontgomeryWenis - I didn't post it here as I normally do, but that's my personal favorite Coen Bros. movie. It's so darn funny. Any one of that main cast levels me flat with laughter every time.
They are such a wild duo and their filmography is a ride. Some of the funniest movies ever.
@@MontgomeryWenis If you want underrated, try Hudsucker Proxy
I watch these “reaction videos” to see the movies I love. This viewer actually seems to be a “ first time viewer” in reality. I’m not distracted by the obvious rehearsed reactions like so many others present. Thank you for taking the time to show this entry.
This is my favorite comedy, I appreciate how much you enjoyed the writing and humor
1st reaction to this movie I've seen where the viewer gets (a lot) of the jokes. The more you watch it the more you see. It is a masterpiece and quite possibly the funniest movie ever made.
That new rug really ties the room together 😆
Amongst all the reasons to love this movie, this reaction reminded me of one of the best. Throughout the movie, the plot continues to try and coalesce around the Dude and he does everything in his power to keep that from happening...lol. Great reaction!!!❤
Love the cut from “you’re not blowing” immediately to “OVER THE LINE!”
Jeff Bridges has said that he rarely if ever watches his own movies more than once, but if the Big Lebowski comes on TV before the Jesus scene, he has to watch until it happens because John Turturo is so brilliant. One of the all time great cameos.
That IS a nice rug. Have you noticed his jelly shoes? "Injection molded plastic sandals" , you might have worn them when you were a toddler. 😂
“He cares about this rug situation.” Hey that rug really tied the room together.
This movie is a masterpiece and John Goodman deserved an award.
Congratulations, after watching this you have now unlocked another level of consciousness!
Yes ! Can't wait to watch your reaction to this masterpiece !!! 😁😁
she wasn't impressed. maybe in part from it being so hyped up.
Just in case you were wondering.... a Sasparilla is a vanilla root-beer.
Good Morning! (he shouts) Always fun to watch someone navigate this one. See you in a bit. :)
All the Dude wanted was his rug back! The rug really tied the room together!!
Ariana reactions are always the best 😂😂
Dude… the ashes at the end had me crying laughing the first time I watched this movie. 😂
Lol me too
That PI fights like a red panda. 😂
You know how they kept telling Donny's character to shut up? In his previous movie, Fargo, he would not shut up! :D
It's like a movie keeps trying to happen to The Dude, but he's just not having it.
Your reaction really tied this movie together
This is such a good movie! Hahaha “this is a deep hole we are in”. It just gets deeper!
Yeah? Well, you know, that's just like uh, your opinion man.
"No you are not wrong Walter, you are an a**hole !" - sums up John Goodman's character perfectly.
I was assigned to see this movie in a college film class when this was in theaters. I actually didn't love it the first time I saw it. I loved Fargo, and this just wasn't what I was expecting. But after a couple more viewings I rank this as one of the best comedies of all time. Still makes me laugh out loud for real.
Saw this film 20 odd years ago and never paid much attention to it. Well that was my fault, brilliant film and great reaction, I'll be buying this film got some years of laughing and smiling to catch up on. Great channel And Thank You Ariana . Cheer's 🇬🇧
10:43 holy cow. that was my first mobile phone.
called bag phone because you'd carry it around
in a well, you know. I think it cost about $3.99
per minute to order a pizza and show off to anyone
that cared. which was usually zero.
there's a great interview with the three of them on youtube about the big lebowski :)
The guy with long grey hair is country folk singer Jimmie Dale Gilmore, who is very good. You don't have to like country to like his music.
Thanks for the info. I'm checking him out now.
You are amazing and, I love your reactions!
Keep up the nice work/channel!
✌✌ and 💕💕 to you!
The firs time I watched this, I had to wait till nobody was at home to watch it on a vcd… that’s right the one on two discs. I timed it perfectly and I was in bed before my parents were back. I giggled the whole way through, I thought is was so low key funny at the time. Then I went to college and watch it again high! Best film ever!!
How was the video quality on your VCDs ?
You bear a striking resemblance to someone who meant a lot to me. When you laugh i am happy.
"Phone's ringing Dude!"
Loved your reaction. I could seriously watch this film on a loop.
11:49 Ariana’s eyes after hearing walter’s simple plan 😁
Gotta watch "Miller's Crossing"
Love the reaction!! One of my favorite movie…… try watching again and just keep your attention on Donnie lol
Keep the reactions coming!!
This movie, (along with Shaun of the Dead) has been viewed so many times, my wife and I quote random parts at the bare minimum 5-8 times a day.
It's that goddamn great. Cheers!
It's literally a modern absurd comedy film noir detective story, but with the Dude in place of the private detective.
There's even a private detective. Remember the blue VW beetle guy? He appeared for a whole of 30 seconds.
Arianna IS SO DAMN PRETTY!!!!
LOL right? I have been watching this film every new years day for at least ten years :D
I know almost all dialogue by heart. Still very much worthwhile to relisten to this with your snickering added :')
12:31 “UZI!??” 🤣🤣🤣
This movie has the BEST edited-for-tv line in all of movie history.
Walter's "This is what happens when you F a stranger in the A" becomes....
"This is what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps"
lol phoebe bidgers named her album after that tv edit lol
Can confirm that even the most basic cremation receptacle is ludicrously overpriced for what you get.
As on ordained Dudist Priest with a PhD in Abidance Counseling, it is always a joy to see new people exposed to our religion's founding testament.
Goodman’s character was based, at least in part, on screenwriter and director John Milius. There’s a great documentary about him out there you should see called (wait for it) MILIUS.
Walter was based off of John Milius and The Dude was partially based off of a guy who really told people to call him ‘Dude’.
This is my favorite movie of all time.. I’m now a subscriber, and May i just say and I’m sure you hear this all the time but you are a pretty lady😊
Definitely one of my favorites. Love Cohen bros movies. You should watch raising Arizona for sure
I want the all Arianna Channel!
One of the reasons I like this movie is that there are some really weird funny insane characters. For example. 1. The people who pissed on his rug...
2. The Russians with the ferret...
3. John Leguizamo's character...
4. That kid Larry with the stare...
5. Of course Walter whenever he says "Shut the fuck up Donnie"...🤣
John Leguizamo isn't in this film. Who are you talking about?
There’s so much wrong in this I don’t even know where to start:
1. If you’re referring to the Jesus, he’s played by John Turturro
2. The Russians are Germans
OMG that's PERFECT! I ran into a *female version* of The Dude TODAY (legit same face, aas if Face App'd!!!) and TONIGHT you make me relive this monument of a film ^^
Also, I've been called Lebowski by a few buddies bwahahaha
Wow, Arianna looks stunningly beautiful here!
John Tuturo's character is crazy.
