They were Dumb and Dumber.
They hadn't even thought about what to do with the car.
$20K each was more than a little bit of money in 1987.
But Jerry must have been planning to run off with the $750K or the $960K because his crimes were beyond covering up.
Of course, he was profoundly stupid too.

The best thing about this movie is the relationship between Marge and Norm. Look at how they take care of each other. When she gets the call in the middle of the night, he insists on getting up to make her breakfast even though she tells him he can still sleep. And at the end, when he's all bummed about his painting only making the three-cent stamp, she knows exactly the right thing to say to cheer him up. The way they look after each other, they're like a rock of stability in the middle of all the ugliness and chaos around them. It grounds the whole movie.
"One of the baddest bitches ever put to television." That is so true! Marge is one of my favourite characters ever.
There's a lot of scandinavian "vibe" in this movie, and as a Norwegian from Norway, in Norway, I'm really amused by it! Most of it is just the typical "Minnesota nice"-thing, but I particularily love the melancholic fiddle-tunes that are played, especially towards the end, for instance when Margie drives the cop car away, along with the ambulance. Those melodies, the slow, sad fiddles, they really hit right home, and give the movie an even deeper "nordic" feel :D
Is Minnesota nice a thing in Scandinavia? I thought the vibe up there was cold and aloof?
We kind of are "cold and aloof" as you say, it's more of an ingrained sense of "minding your own business", that can be seen as cold and aloof by people who come from places of higher social density, more activity
The way I understand "Minnesota nice" though, is a certain sense of naivetee, that you'd get from a place or a people not used to the big, wild, metropolitan world - and that is definitely something I recognize!
From 1870 to ca.1900 some Icelandic people moved to North-Dakota, Minnesota and Manitoba area in Canada. Hence Scandinavian/Icelandic names of towns/mountains/villages like Gimli/Reykjaik/husavik in Canada.
Most of the "vibes" are Swedish though - over a quarter of a million Swedes came to Minnesota between 1850 and 1930. In 2020 Minnesota had 7 % of its population being of Swedish origin, making the Swedes by far the biggest Nordic group.
The Fargo TV show is brilliant as well. Highly recommended.

It's not a true story, that's just a joke. But there is a pretty cool Japanese independent movie where the protagonist sees an old VHS copy of the movie, is convinced that it's a true story, and sets out to Fargo to find the money... it's really good.
Komiko, the Treasure Hunter. Just watched it.
I love this movie. It really shows just how off the rails things can go when you can't swim but you dive into the deep end.

Yeah I just found them tonight and I feel the same that's why I subbed right up. This is the second reaction I've watched of there's the first was just before this LOL saving Private Ryan. This is what reaction watchers look for. I'm in. I hope they take requests LOL
That was so intense with Marge and the Big Guy in the Prowler. She went from extreme anger and disgust; and then she just says “I don’t understand”. It's almost as if she forgives him for being a selfish loser. Great scene.
That scene is incredible. She says something so simple but so powerful. She sums up the whole theme of the movie in that scene. The Coens are incredible
I thought it was so cute that you thought Lundegard was sympathetic at the beginning; of all the evil people in this movie, he may be the worst.
What a silly little man. Hope he doesn’t orchestrate multiple schemes stealing millions as well as death and kidnapping

Not based on a real story btw, it was just a stunt by the Coen brothers to sort of make people more engrossed in the story. :)

You really should add Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) to your library (or theater?). It's an insanely underrated movie that shows Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany, and especially Director Peter Weir at their very best. Though historical fiction, it has a shocking amount of accuracy while not sacrificing story. The filmmakers even went so far as to purchase a replica, era appropriate frigate and taught the cast to sail it. Worth consideration at the very least.
I love it too and want to get to it but I've got a list we're going through first before we make another "animatrix" mistake lol

What was so cool was that marge's husband is the only decent guy in the story. And his name is "Norm." Watch the television series to "follow the money."

Frances McDormand won the Academy Award for her performance. Make sure you watch her in "3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri", for which she won another. Weird title but a truly great movie.
"You know Norm we're doing pretty good". Amazing how one simple line of dialogue can elicit a strong reaction. For me a bit like in Casablanca . "Welcome back to the fight. This time I know our side will win". Always gets me.
I live a 1/2 a block from Stillwater Prison that Marge mentions to the mechanic Proudfoot.

For what it's worth, the TV show doesn't stretch out this story into a full season. It tells a completely different story and is just as good as the movie.
The wisp of romance that runs through this magnificent little film elevates it into my top 20.
Marge and Norm are probably my all time favourite movie couple.
The local museum in Fargo (even though the film was not shot there) has the woodchipper and fake leg from the movie on display:).
I'm a confirmed bachelor, but I would LOVE being married to Marge.❤Gosh but what a real human being she is! Girls, let Marge be your roll-model...NOT a supermodel-flavour of the month.
Saw this in the theaters twice because I saw it by myself & then HAD to take my family to go see it too

OMFG you guys did _Fargo_ ?? Oh my God this is two home runs I just found your channel LOL I just finished watching saving Private Ryan and you had me balling at the end all over again LOL. I am a veteran for both the army and the Navy but was blessed to have been in during peacetime both times. I can't even imagine what these boys went through oh my god.
I remember when dealerships were pushing the undercoat crap before it became standard,. One of the girls in the bar being questioned was also the language coach for the movie.
Lol yeah now they dont even have to upsell it. it's just baked into the price

A) people who hate the movie because of the exaggerated accents
B) people who love the movie because of the accurate accents
this movie is the life lesson that when a movie says "its based on a true story" that statement can be completely false
Jerry reminds me of some politician that Obama spoke of by saying "Don't underestimate his ability to things up".

As a Minnesotan the one thing I gotta nitpick about is wherever they are filming looks nothing like Brainerd. Brainerd is smack dab in the middle of lake country, lots of tree and lakes, there are lots of lake resorts there and a lot of people have there cabins in that area, It looks like they were filming closer to the Fargo/Moorhead area, the closer you get to North Dakota the Flater and more open things get. Also Frances McDormand does an amazing job in this.

The first season of the show is one of the greatest seasons of television ever made.
I will argue that the Coens make what I like to call "inept victim" films - many times, the criminals are smart, or have good plans, but the stupidity or the inability of the potential marks to follow directions, causes the plans to go haywire.
If you want to see a right turn, watch the movie the Coen brothers did after Fargo, a little something called The Big Lebowski.

I'm sure it's somewhere else down in the comments, but go watch the Coen Brothers first film "Blood Simple" now. It was Frances' first film, and where she met Joel Coen who she later married. In contrast to this film, it's a sweaty Texas noir film, and has a scene that's super similar to the car chase scene in this one. It's one of the best directorial debuts ever. Also, "No Country for Old Men" by the Coens (no Frances this time) is my favorite movie of all time. It's a master class in fillm making and so freakin' tense with fantastic performances.
Frances McDormand is married to Joel Coen, she can't have children they adopted a boy from Paraguay in the 1990's. If you want to see her "shine" watch her outstanding turn in Alan Parker's 1988 "Mississipi Burning", she is amazing amongst a brilliant cast, and that one is based on a true story.
Probably one of the best films ever made, imo

A really underrated Coen bros. film is their 2004 remake of "The Ladykillers" with Tom Hanks and Ryan Hurst. The 1955 original with Alec Guiness and Peter Sellers is pretty good too.
Also know that the Fargo series ties into the film. There are different generations etc for example in one of the seasons Marge's daughter is the main character. Haven't seen the fourth season but the first three are amazing.

I heard the story of the Japanese woman who froze to death looking for the money Carl buried. She went to the local authorities to get a map of the area, and her not being able to speak English didn't help the situation. It was reported she was wearing a mini skirt and knee high boots. I don't know what that had to do with anything. Was that just a story also.

Think about this. If Carl had remembered to put the tags on the Cierra, the state trooper wouldn't have pulled him over. If that hadn't happened, think about all the other things that wouldn't have happened.
Yeah, it's almost like there was a script written to create a logical story.
Good follow up would be A Simple Plan with Bill Paxton. Tonally quite similar to this.
Oh my gosh, I love you guys, I'm subscribing! Hey: three great 90s movies, big ones that need way more reactions: "Boogie Nights", "Cape Fear", and Tarantino's "Jackie Brown". Also Tarantino's "Death Proof" (that's from the 2000s). You guys are so fun.
Second Boogie Nights. A dark comedy about the 70s porn film industry. But really dark - you’ll love it.

There was a really interesting and really horrifying analysis of Fargo from the point of critiquing late stage capitalism, but it was written in late 2000s or mid 2010s so I can't find it...
The broad point of it was isolation of individuals through capitalistic desires, like Wade ignoring his son in law Jerry while watching TV, the image which is repeated by the wife Jean, who is seemingly not affected by Wade's isolation of Jerry and is OBLIVIOUS to the impending doom lurking outside the window that is money loving Carl, and the lonely killer Gaer who watches a family themed TV show while ignoring his accomplice Carl, both of whom btw BUYS prostitutes to get love, pretty ironic.
Jerry is not given a chair while talking to Wade and his accomplice about his finder's fee, and the next scene shows him walking alone to his car on a white snowcovered parking lot, the image which screams isolation(in retrospect, in my own opinion, the parking lot sums up the isolation caused by car-centric city structure and disconnection of community caused by motoring industry's capitalistic greed but thats just me.)
And it pointed out that Marge and her baby is not safe from all of this cold isolation of capitalist wasteland represented by the snowy field of Minnesota, as she is seen consuming the peak capitalism(take-out junk food) alone in her prowler and not dining inside the restaurant, watches TV with her husband(Gaer visibly noticed the line from the TV drama "I'm pregnant", Marge is, for some narrative reason, pregnant), and the faith in humanity lost by being lied to by Mike Yanagita, who was clearly mentally ill from being isolated for whatever reason(who also lives with his parents like Jerry who lives with his father in law, isolated).
This all points to a bleak future where she carries Gaer through the snowy wasteland like Jerry did in the beginning. What will her unborn child face in this world?
Honestly I prefer the reactions where someone reacts by themself.. y’all speak over so much epic dialogue when there’s someone else there 😂 still love you guys, it’s just personal preference, especially for dialogue heavy movies like Fargo

You should watch "burn after reading" if you havent watched it. One of my favs from the Coen brothers
Each one of those screw ups got what was coming to them . But there was a lot of collateral damage . There was just the right amount of humor mixed into the lurid narrative to give the film a realism . The two loose ends left dangling after the film was over , and were for the audience : What would become of Scotty , the teenage son of the Lundergards , and the doctor bag full of cash buried in the snow on the highway .
Best picture winner of that year and directors Coen Brothers won best director with Francis McDormand got her oscar for best actress

Jerry’s character is the sort that he knows he’s way over his head and sees everythjng going effed all over and still foolishly believes he can come out on top.
One of the best movies ever. The Fargo series is definitely worth a look as well.

Jerry was in trouble either way. Even if the kidnapping had gone through without a problem, he still would have been arrested for fraud for his GMAC scam.
If this was Based on a True Story this Movie would be Epic , Unfortunately the Only Truth that happened in Real life was the Chipper, Do Humans act this way in Real Life.... Everyday, However the Movie is Cohen Classic, Bloodsimple and Barton Fink are exceptional Character Driven Suspense Movies also

Jerry must have known that Shep was an ex-con, and asked him to recommend someone to do the kidnapping. Shep apparently recommended Grimsrud (he must have known Grimsrud from prison) and Grimsrud brought along Showalter -- all of them hardened criminals, one of them a bona fide psychopath. Jerry is completely unaware of what kind of people they are. He thinks he can do business with them as if it were a legitimate deal. He doesn't know these guys are out of control and he seems genuinely surprised when Showalter says he wants all the money -- or all the money Jerry told him about. There are too many examples of Jerry's utter incompetence to count.

@@Diegesis I saw an interview with William H. Macy. He said his family and friends were rooting for Jerry, because they loved him as Bill Macy. He said, "No! Jerry's an idiot! He's a numb-nuts!" Peter Stormare, so frightening as Grimsrud, is an old-fashioned European gentleman in interviews. He already had been working for a long time in Sweden and in the U.S., already a veteran.
You absolutely have to watch the Fargo TV series (at least the first 2 seasons) they are absolutely amazing. Probably the best TV show I've seen in the last decade.
It’s actually NOT a true story. The Cohen brothers put that in there just to make it seem more dramatic.
