Peter Stormare, a Swede, said that Minnesota was more Swedish than Sweden. He went into a number of restaurants that displayed the Swedish flag and pictures of the King and Queen.
Well, he kind of meant the opposite... we never have flags unless there's a national holiday or a birthdays. And most people that bother with a picture of the Knig (not a misspelling :P) have it on the wall in the bathroom. :)
I recently heard that when American soldiers moved into Germany in 1945, they found it to be much less foreign and more like home than the Netherlands, France, and even England. I did ❤ the movie, the English Patient tho... nobody ever talks about it, and nobody's ever reacted to it.... just saying... it'd b a good reaction movie! ... and yes, it did love Fargo as well
This is a Minnesota accent, not midwest. The midwest accent is more generic and is considered the closest to a stereotypical American accent. It's therefore what gets chosen for many of the nationwide newscasters and journalists.
Love the reactions. It’s amazing that being such a huge fan of films and filmmaking, that you’ve never seen the majority of films you review. How can that be? Glad you’ve been catching up.
Peter Stormare plays in a band called "Blonde from Fargo" named after his role in this movie. At one point Peter Stormare was talking to a director about a part in a movie and the director asked him if he would be able to give a performance similar to that blonde guy from Fargo, not knowing that it was Stormare who had played that role. Stormares reply was simply no, that would be too hard for him.
As a native Minnesotan, I love this movie. The accents are exaggerated for the cities, but you can certainly find them on the Iron Range. The music is just... right in the feels. It's really a classic movie.
At the end talking about teaching them to speak Minnesotan, I couldn't help thinking of the same situation Kate Winslet went though trying to get a particular dialect of Pennsylvania. She does a wonderful crack up of SNL doing a take on her.
My friend and I are from Minnesota. We watched it at the movie theater she managed. She was all offended. “We don’t talk like that!” “Actually, we do. “
lol it surely is our accent, it's just not as strong with most people anymore. Gotta go up North to find people with accents as strong as the movie implies. But since so many of us are Norwegian/Swedish/Finnish, that accent (which is basically just how people from those countries sound speaking English) will always probably be somewhat present!
So glad to see this. Fargo is one of my favorite films of all time. Such a great dark comedy. Some of the funniest scenes in film history-my favorites being the snow shoveling conversation and meeting the old classmate. My dad and I consistently quote this movie.
OMG! As much as you love Frances McDormand, you must watch her in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. She won Best Actress Oscar for this performance....... as well as this movie and Nomadland. She plays a very intense character in Three Billboards. One of my top ten movies ever.

Fargo is a great movie to watch with Roger Deakins' commentary on. Tons of really subtle things that really sell the film that you hardly notice, but are clearly there when pointed out.
Hey Shan. Minnesota nice is a real thing. Born and raised. The accents and phrases are obviously over the top which kind of pissed a lot of people off. But I found it hilarious. Being born and raised in Minnesota but my dad from Indiana and my mom from Michigan. I don't have a heavy Minnesota accent. But I hear it in everybody else. Oh yeah, geez it's there when they talk. That was fun. And keep the trivia I don't even know why that's an issue. It's interesting and it totally separates you from other reactors. As always you're awesome. Yoo I'm a shameless skank for the trivia lol fun fact Steve's character donny in the big lebowski was always told to "shut the phuck up donny" by Walter to balance out how he never shut up in this lol
Not long after this came out, there was a store in the mall (Spencer's), where you could buy a snow globe of her throwing up next to the bloody car wreck.
There is an interview or commentary by the Coen brothers somewhere where they mention that every time they kill a Steve Buscemi character, there is less of his corpse remaining.
I always enjoy the trivia segments in your videos. I'm not too far into the video, but if you haven't seen 'No Country for Old Men,' it's really good. Good review so far.
Saw it in the theaters and it's an enduring favorite for myself, friends, family and all the other Michiganders in my life. I think you nail it as far as how the lurid story contrasts with the chipper mundanity. I love the Coens and this is maybe their best.
So I hate to admit it but I watch Fargo many times a year. From the theater as soon as it was on DVD and now streaming... It never gets old. I watch it during the summer here in Az. Going to bed at night it instantly makes your body and room feel cooler! Lol, great movie and great reaction as usual.
I first watched it in film appreciation class in about 2004. The fact that it was on laser disc and projected in the theater sized lecture hall added to cinematic experience.
Seems like many Coen Brothers movies utilize heavy regional accents and have the films' locations act as supporting characters, in a way. Fantastic storytelling!
If I had a million bucks buried in the snow that my partner didn't know about, and he insisted on taking the stolen car with hot tags and cop's brains all over the carpet, that's now linked to six murders, I wouldn't be able to say yes fast enough. And he's going to pay me for half of it, too???
I saw this movie when it was released in the cinema. Already knew it was an inside joke, that this movie was not based on a true story, but like it says ''This is a true story'', which it is, a true original story! I laughed so hard (I was by myself, and never laughed so hard at a movie in the cinema before, with no company at all), especially when the cop got killed, and how Steve Buscemi's reacted with ''Oh Daddy!''. After that scene, two women left the theatre, probably they thought it was really based on a true story, and it was (what I think) in their opinion very inappropriate to make fun on a true crime story. Greetings from The Netherlands.
Not sure how interested you are in TV, but the Fargo TV show is absolutely amazing. The first two seasons especially. It's not like a remake or anything of this movie, it's just new stories told in this kind of dark, comedic, Fargo-y way. Truly, truly some of the best TV of the last decade, however. Highly recommend to check out in your personal time.
Burn After Reading is my favorite Coen Bros. movie. It actually has a somewhat similar plot to Fargo, though more generally comedic. Frances McDormand is utterly hysterical. As is George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and John Malkovich, in particular.
I was so excited to see this come up! This was my mom's favorite movie. :) My mom and I were born in Wisconsin and my "home" accent is very close to this, lol. I can fall into it so easily. Watching this made me miss my mom so much.
I'm glad to see that you were sceptical right away when you saw that "true story" opening. Some reactors get extremely upset when the bodies start piling up.
One of the best movies ever! I love how the criminals are all so amazingly stupid. Jerry pays ex cons with a car that can be traced back to where he works. He's paying them $40k to pick up a bag with a million dollars in it. The kidnappers forget to put their tags on their car. Carl thinks he's being smart by stealing plates from another car, but then chooses a place that probably has cameras and then makes a huge scene with the toll gate guy to make sure he is clearly remembered. It goes on and on. The only smart character in the story, besides Margie, is Jerry's kid who asks all the questions that the adults should be asking. It's total Keystone cops!
Well the 40k thing wasnt really Jerrys fault was it? He intended to take the money himself but the father in law insisted on doing it instead. He wouldve switched out the money and given the 80k to the ransomers who wouldve assumed that was all the money.
@@ComicCrossing As if the kidnappers wouldn't have looked into the money bag before handing it over to Jerry--if they even gave it to him at all. One of the countless things that Jerry should have considered.
@@norwegianblue2017 I'm saying Jerry probably assumed he would get the money from his father in law, take out the rest on his way over and give the kidnappers the case with 40k in it. Not that his father in law would insist on being so involved.
For some reason the style of this movie always reminds me of an old detective mini movie series called "Columbo". Just that knowing the criminal in advance, affable sleuth, criminal slipping up, etc etc etc. Good series if you ever have the time!

Oh, also, the buried money that is left unaccounted for comes back into play in the Fargo TV series, which you would think couldn't match the movie but is aMAZing.

I grew up in a rural area with lots of farmland. It really does get like that in the winter. Just a flat, white void in every direction. No protection from the wind, so snow is blowing in front of you, all over the road, and it keeps pushing your vehicle, so you're constantly compensating for that. Luckily it's also a perfectly straight, very level stretch of road, but it could be terrifying in the winter.
19:42 To me, who lived for a long time in a very cold place, it looked quite warm: Cloudy, minimal wind, and melting snow. Temp must've been pushing 40 (above!)
My entire extended family on my mom’s side is from the Fargo area. I did not grow up there but I can tell you that from and outsiders perspective this is one of the few movies that portray’s the upper Midwest accent in that area perfectly. My family who grew up there however tell me that it is a little embellished. However they do so sounding exactly like the characters portrayed in Fargo would so I don’t know. It may be one of those things like how your voice doesn’t sound how you think it sounds when you hear a recording of yourself.
I watched this for the first time in the theater in North Dakota when the move was released. A guy in the seat in front of me said, “We don’t sound like that!” He said it in a perfect accent that sounded just like the movie. I couldn’t stop laughing after that!

Nominated for 7 Oscars including Best Picture, but won for Best Actress Frances McDormand and Best Original Screenplay.
The English Patient Won Best Picture and Best Director, as well as 7 other Oscars.
I did ❤ the movie, the English Patient tho... nobody ever talks about it, and nobody's ever reacted to it.... just saying... it'd b a good reaction movie! ... and yes, it did love Fargo as well
Tough choice. I love the english patient.
This is a Minnesota accent, not midwest. The midwest accent is more generic and is considered the closest to a stereotypical American accent. It's therefore what gets chosen for many of the nationwide newscasters and journalists.
I love the trivia. It's a nice way to recap the film and relive its moments in a new context.
Oh yaaaaaah. I'm here for it, youbetchya!
Great review! Your enthusiasm adds a lot. I really enjoy the trivia section.
Trivia Ho Squad checking in!
Marge Gunderson is my all-time favorite movie cop!
My friend and I are from Minnesota. We watched it at the movie theater she managed. She was all offended. “We don’t talk like that!” “Actually, we do. “
Yah sure you betcha, we do. Less so in the Twin Cities but it creeps out.
lol it surely is our accent, it's just not as strong with most people anymore.
*Most definitely watch the show. They’re amazing*
REALLY enjoyed your reaction! You have a gift for this.
Hey, Shanelle.
Long time watcher, first time commenter. Loved your react to this classic.
I'm a Long Island boy (Suffolk County). I left N.Y. in '96 and lived in Arizona for a long time. Now I'm in Illinois. I like you a lot because you remind me of all the Long Island girls/women I miss so much. Keep up the good work.
I'm mainly commenting to say I love the trivia section. You're the only one who does it. So keep it going. I learn many things I didn't know about my favorite movies. Fargo definitely being one of them. Peace. 🤘😎🤘
I’m so sad William Hurt passed away, I been watching his movies for over 40 years, thanks Shanelle for reacting to this classic
Same here. William Hurt was one of my faves. He delivered some of my favorite performances of all time in ‘The Big Chill’, ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman,’ ‘Children of a Lesser God,’ ‘Broadcast News,’ and ‘The Accidental Tourist.’
R.I.P. to the great thespian.
Fargo is a great movie to watch with Roger Deakins' commentary on. Tons of really subtle things that really sell the film that you hardly notice, but are clearly there when pointed out.
Marge and Norm's relationship is the kind I need
So yeah, we'll see you next time then ❤️💚☘️🇺🇦
Yoo I'm a shameless skank for the trivia lol fun fact Steve's character donny in the big lebowski was always told to "shut the phuck up donny" by Walter to balance out how he never shut up in this lol
Her take on the a few things in that movie would be interesting. Quite unique.
Saw it in the theaters and it's an enduring favorite for myself, friends, family and all the other Michiganders in my life. I think you nail it as far as how the lurid story contrasts with the chipper mundanity. I love the Coens and this is maybe their best.
He he, “chipper”… I see what you did there.
You got to love a Jose Feliciano cameo.
Iconic flick. We've been quoting lines from this and other Cohen movies for so many years now......Total fun.
I can't explain why love your channel so much.
Love the commentary and faq you do at the end!! Really like this movie it’s a gem- 10/10 it’s always so much fun to watch you watch movies!
As always, your takes on the filmmaking are fascinating.
Although it wasn't connected to the movie there was an awesome TV series called 'Fargo' that followed.
It actually is connected to the movie! One of the characters happens upon the money buried at the end of the movie :)
I absolutely love your review and trivia section 😊😊
More than good.
“Is this gonna be a death movie?!” 😂
Me: Yeah, about that…
8:23 So glad I'm not the only one. I get such anxiety with phone calls and end up pacing the room reciting what I'm going to say for it never turn out like that when I do make the call.
I used to take days to make a phone call.
Saw it in the theatre when it came to Sweden back in '96. First time I remember seeing Peter Stormare (who's Swedish) in anything. He's been in lots of stuff since then. Absolutely loved it.
I have watched a few of your reactions in the last few days. I wondered why do I recognize her. Remembered your face and said "oh ya she's cool" from about 4 months ago. U popped up on my feed and now I am subscribing cutie pie...lol
Roger Deakins did the cinematography on Fargo and Oh Brother Where Art Thou. He was the cinematographer on a lot of Coen Bros movies including No Country For Old Men
His work on No Country was incredible! Some of those shots were heartbreakingly good.
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 👍👍
This is my favourite Coen Brothers film. William H Macy plays pathetic so well and Frances McDormand is wonderful.
I remember watching this with some friends and the whole staff of the theater the night before its release. Top 3 all time experience. Not just movies.
Very nice reaction video. You notice the same things in movies i do. Like the one shot on that empty parking lot to not mess up the snow and so on. :)
Cheers.
I love this movie. It's my favorite Coen Brothers film next to O Brother Where Art Thou. Franny Mc is insanely good; so is William H. Macy. I love how almost every scene with Marge and Norm together involves eating. The two of them are comedy gold.
Oh, also, the buried money that is left unaccounted for comes back into play in the Fargo TV series, which you would think couldn't match the movie but is aMAZing.
Great movie. Check out the FARGO TV show also, every season has been amazing! No Frances McDormand though in the TV show but each season is different and wonderfully done - writing, acting, directing. 🤩
Love the trivia section and your reactions to the trivia.
I love this movie. I remember telling on of my cousins to watch it, but she didn't get it at all. She said "you said this was a comedy, people died." Lol
I am also a trivia junky. I look up the IMDB trivia all the time.
Shanelle!! The Ladykillers!! You will love it!!
I watched this back in the day, rented on video..lol, and I wasn't sure what I was getting into but was pleasantly surprised. I was into action and horror but the pace drew me in for some weird reason. Love the actors. Thanks for the reaction, great as always. Who found the money in the spring? haha
So glad you watched this!
19:42 To me, who lived for a long time in a very cold place, it looked quite warm: Cloudy, minimal wind, and melting snow. Temp must've been pushing 40 (above!)
oh, something that I recognized from a later show (No Country for Old Men) was the 'headlights on the horizon' which opened a new plot sequence.
_Miller's Crossing_ was my intro to these directors. Low-key comedy does seem to flow through these films.
As an aspiring filmmaker, being a trivia section ho has been a large part of my education LOL
I am a total trivia hoe! Pretty much all trivia, but I especially love movie trivia.
Yeah, I don’t notice me or my family’s accent until I’m in an area where everyone speaks with a different accent.
