It’s worth mentioning that this is NOT a true story. The Coens just added that as a storytelling device.
From what I read, the only connection to a real life story was the wood chipper in regards to a man who did something similar to his wife. Truly hideous, not dismissing that. But yeah, the whole plot is otherwise completely fabricated.
THIS. I think you’re supposed to start out believing it, and as the story goes, you finally just have to stop suspending your disbelief. I feel like it’s one of the essential elements that makes Coen films so magical.

Marge and Norm are couple goals. Love them! Also this is one of the rare movies where the main character's pregnancy is not the focus of the movie. It's just in the middle of her pregnancy. She doesn't give birth or lose the baby. There are no conversations about whether she can still do the job. Awesome movie!
Marge is amazing. She doesn't show up until we're 40 minutes in, and with the short time she has she catches the bad guys, brings most of the comic tone, and while she's at it, manages to completely take over as the protagonist. And all while 7 months pregnant. This movie is fantastic.

Except for the weather and their heavy parkas with the hoods up. Real Minnesotans would be out in their shorts if snow was melting and flowing down the street in mid-winter.
The story and setting of this movie is so unique to others. Probably in my top 50 films actually, really well made. The actors really knew what they were doing. The cinematography is obviously stunning
Ethan Coen first explained why the pair added the "true story" disclaimer to the film, saying, "We wanted to make a movie just in the genre of a true story movie. You don't have to have a true story to make a true story movie."

I just figured that by now, even the people who've not seen the movie but are familiar with it - particularly film enthusiasts such as these two - or those people who haven't seen it but who are familiar with the work of the Coen Brothers, would know that it's NOT ACTUALLY a true story. I remember as teenager, after seeing it, I tried to scour the Internet for articles about the actual events, which I do for any "True Story" because I need the facts, not the cinematic fictionalized facts.

I used to not understand why they had the Mikey scenes in there until I read somebody explain that if not for finding out that he was lying about his wife, she would not have second-guessed Jerry and gone back to talk to him.
It's also a meta-parallel. Since audiences were expecting a true story that isn't actually a true story.
I think the reason the second car parking attendant got killed, is because he asked Buscemi for the $4. That’s why the gate is smashed off.

I saw this movie for the first time ever a couple of months back and I was so gripped. I still need to see The Big Lebowski. That highway scene gives me such chills, I would compare it to the scenes in David Lynch's 1997 film, Lost Highway.... something about those dark and isolated highways in America gets my heart pumping. I grew up taking those long drives with family overnight and it's creepy.
This movie was a trifecta of introductions for me: the Coen Brothers, William H Macy, and Frances McDormand

One of my favorite movies. Such a horrific tale juxtaposed against the wholesome goodness of Francis Mcdormand's character, The kind way she treats the guy who is obviously creeping on her, the amazing cinematography, and William H Macy's desperation. Just great.
I first saw this movie as a kid on network tv. Even at a young age it struck me as an amazing movie so much so I immediately rented the full length movie to see what I'd missed out on.

As a Minnesotan, I love it. While the accents are overplayed, the scene of the officer talking to the old guy shoveling his driveway about the bar encounter is the most true to life Minnesotan conversations I've ever seen in a movie.
For the record, it’s not actually based on a true story. They put that disclaimer at the beginning so people would suspend their disbelief more.
Ya do that these days, people will try to sue the filmmakers.

Frances McDormand is amazing. On Oscar night that year I dashed from my shift at Tower Records over to an Oscar party in a bar in Toronto's gay village. When her name was announced for Best Actress the entire bar burst into cheers. I never tire of watching her in this.

Hi there, so as someone who actually lives in Brainerd I can tell you it was a weird time when this movie came out. Since it isn't really a true story we all got asked questions and had to set everyone right on that front, dontcha know. We didn't even have an Arby's when this movie came out. So ya, it was a real fun time. I always wondered why they set most of the action in Brainerd but the movie was called Fargo. This was a fun reaction for me to watch.
I worked a contract out of D.C. and had to go to Detroit in the winter. Spent a week in a hotel room because of a blizzard... Timing is everything.

Was from "Hey Leonardo" by Blessed Union of Souls, not the Barenaked Ladies but not a bad guess, same era, GOOD TUNE too incidentally.
Fargo's a great film and it was the film that made me 1) check out the Coen's back catalogue of films (loved Millers Crossing and Raising Arizona especially) and 2) had me first in line to see "The Big Lebowski" in 98.
People forget some of the earlier Coen Brother's movies that were really entertaining like "Blood Simple", "Miller's Crossing" and you mentioned "Raising Arizona", all of which are worth watching.

New Rule: If a channel is going to react to Fargo, somebody in their orbit needs to give them an envelope that is not to be opened until after the movie with a note inside saying "this is NOT a true story." Literally everybody watching this wants to see them realize it's not a true story.
I love Marge so much. Her characterisation is just brilliant. She is shown so perfectly to have a great, logical mind, brilliant at piecing things together. Unphased by horrific violence. But is actually pretty naive when it comes to reading people. She is so logical she takes everything at face value, including what people say.
I often see people comment that she was onto Jerry's bullshit right away and was just playing him, but I don't think that's the case at all. She really is still just going through her logical problem solving. The second time she visits him she is still just trying to track down where the car came from. She is blindsided by Jerry's sudden outburst because she didn't clock him getting increasingly aggitated. It's so good.
The two best people for this movie were chosen for this reaction.

I’ve always felt sorry for Scottie in this movie. By the end of the film his mother and grandfather have been murdered and his father was implicated in it and is going to prison.
My mother showed me this one and I watched with her more than once. I want with my heart to get tired of this film and I can't. It is great every single watch no matter how much has passed. And yeah, Raising Arizona but No Country For Old Men is the zenith of this very film. I don't know if you have seen but heck if you haven't done a review I say go for it anyways. YT vids of that one always get a lot of engagements.
If you enjoyed the setting of this movie, I HIGHLY recommend the Fargo mini-series. Each season is a story that's over and done with in 10 EP and S5 just ended. Season 1 has multiple tie-ins/nods with the movie, but you have to watch it to find out. Billy Bob alongside Martin Freeman was so good.

I’m not disappointed, I’m excited for the Coen journey you have in store.
Inside Llewyn Davis is my favorite Coen anything, after that Barton Fink.
I also recommend the Fargo TV show.
If you really want to explore the Coen brothers, you need to see their first movie, _Blood Simple_ (1984). It's one of the best neo-noirs made between _Chinatown_ and _L.A. Confidential_ and they clearly understand all the tropes of noir films, plus you see the genesis of the style you see in their later films. Great character performances from Dan Hedaya, and the late M. Emmett Walsh as a sleazy P.I. who drives an old VW Beetle (recalled with Jon Polito in _The Big Lebowski_ ). It's the first film where Frances McDormand slept with her director; they started dating during production and married shortly thereafter.
It got good reviews in the Washington Post and Baltimore Sun so I went to see it with my roommate and a colleague from work. The colleague hated it and compared it to a cheap slasher film; my roommate and I tried to convince him, No! look at the cinematography, the lighting design, the writing...
Also one of the few movies where the "director's cut" is shorter than the original release; I couldn't tell that anything was missing so it probably was shots the Coens realized were unnecessary after more experience in filmmaking.
Pairing these two reactors are great.

I imagine the William H. Macy character married his wife thinking he too would get rich only to find out afterwards that is now how his Father-in-law works. I think the Father-in-law sensed the type of person his son-in-law was to a point. Macy's character gave no thought about his kid. Not that he really cared about the kid or the wife. No thought if things went wrong. Just no thinking things through in general. Great character: A pathetic sociopath.

I love how much THE BIG LEBOWSKI recalls this film: Both films have a million-dollar ransom for a wife. In both films, Steve Buscemi says, “in and out.” Peter Stormare wants pancakes in both films. The Dude is eager to give 4 dollars because Carl is reluctant to give 4 dollars. In Malibu, The Dude gets the Shep Proudfoot treatment (beaten on the floor). Bunny Lebowski is originally from Moorhead, Minnesota, the city next to . . . Fargo.
Definitely need to watch Fargo TV series that I think started in 2014 I believe! Its very good and I think coen brothers are involved in the production!

❤ I have personally seen William H Macy and a lot of movies. He’s been in a lot of films and it doesn’t matter if it’s a blockbuster if it’s a Academy award-winning performance or just a silly ass movie like primes Stanickey with John Cena in it. Macy makes his participation in the movie the best he loves playing serious heavy rolls to a silly ass little roll and he makes it work every single time.
I love Fargo and the TV series is just as fun. McDormand is a hoot and Macy is equally fun. Buscemi is Buschemi and never fails to entertain.
It's fun watching reactors thinking this is a true story. We all thought it was real.

I believe only Katharine Hepburn has won more Academy Awards than Frances McDormand - she's absolutely phenomenal. Her first role with the Coen Brothers was Blood Simple you should definitely react to that one as well.
Bill Macy played the worst-ever "criminal mastermind" in this flick. He almost got the Oscar as well. . .
THE FOUNDER was based "loosely" on the truth, unlike NONE of the truth, here. One example is that the MacDonald brothers were interviewed after the film was released (I believe). They both said that they were very satisfied with the buyout. They had no complaints. The woman that Ray ended up with was not lured away from her successful loving husband. She was already divorced when Ray met her. I believe that her ex was actually a fireman. Just going from memory. Fans should find the interview. Quite enlightening.
Most ppl for some reason miss the sarcasm when Jerry offers the deal to Wade. He and his partner are rolling their eyes and saying sure you won't mind if we move on this "great" deal.

You need to watch the tv series, especially seasons 1 & 5.
Definitely show him No Country, Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink and Raising Arizona. Also Blood Simple would definitely be interesting as it perfectly demonstrates the Brothers were masters of the craft RIGHT FROM THE START, and also I'd LOVE for you guys to do The Tragedy of Macbeth too, since that's Joel's first major feature on his own that nonetheless shows he's still JUST AS GOOD working without Ethan. Also, Denzel Washington and Frances MacDormand as Macbeth and his Lady? Killer combo, definitely.
