I know I said I'd make reviews of the Resistance franchise but I wanted to take a slight break from console games to quickly get Timeshift done. Now it's time for Resistance! If you want to come join me going over the Resistance trilogy then give a follow on twitch, hope to see you there! www.twitch.tv/jarek4gamingdragon

Your character, before time is changed, takes a better version of the time suit and follows him.

Reverse time is so under-utilized in this game. I wish there were more puzzles where that time power is better utilized. A tech demo from many, many years ago showed off a scenario where the protagonist had to sneak into a control room, so he broke the glass and climbed in. Then he reversed time so the window is unbroken again and the guards wouldn't notice. But something like that never made it into the game.

Hopefully this clears some things up.
There's some government-funded future-tech company working on a black project involving time manipulation, which is referred to as, "Metacognition." Their first prototype model is the B.E.T.A. suit and the would-be production model is the S.A.M. suit. You're one of the researchers working on the project under the development head, Doctor Krone. The Government, however, is investigating Doctor Krone on suspicion of ulterior motives and you, as well as a female scientist, are their moles.
Eventually, the both of you discover that Doctor Krone indeed plans on using the B.E.T.A. suit, the completed stage 1 prototype, to further his own malevolent ends. He plans to travel back to an undetermined time period and use his knowledge of secret government technologies to build his own dictatorship over Earth whilst using time manipulation to essentially keep himself installed as the immortal, de-facto ruler. He understands that he's being watched and plans to destroy the research facility, as well as the S.A.M. suit, which has yet to undergo trials, in order to prevent anyone from stopping him.
You manage to equip the S.A.M. suit and attempt a time jump in order to pursue Doctor Krone, but the damage sustained alongside the S.A.M.'s own system errors lead to a critical malfunction in its capabilities. You are propelled to an alternate, present/future timeline in which Doctor Krone is combating a stiff resistance. Your suit is no longer capable of making long-distance time jumps, so alongside the primary goal of stopping Krone, your secondary objective is to acquire technology from the B.E.T.A. suit in order to re-enable long-distance time jumps.
After a hard-fought campaign, you execute a wounded Doctor Krone, re-enable long-distance time jumps, and presumably un-fuck the world by also killing the Krone that appeared in the aforementioned undetermined time period, before he can create paradoxes or accelerate the growth of technology beyond the original timeline. That part, however, is not played nor is it shown in a cutscene. It is merely inferred by the actual end-game cutscene where the player character simply disarms the bomb in the government facility and nothing else really happens. Well, aside from S.A.M. detecting a paradox and forcing another jump, but we never got that sequel.

    • @PerdiccasMKD
      @PerdiccasMKD 4 года назад +12

Your suit is the B.E.T.A suit where as Krones suit is the Alpha suit! Its S.S.A.M not S.A.M and it stands for Strategic System for Adabtable Metacognision and that is your A.I that warns you of hazzards and enemies nearby and can hack everything(a long with many other things like any other videogame A.I)! A LOT of the story comes from context clues which means it’s up to the player to put the pieces together. This facility is creating a Time Machine. Dr. Krone, one of the overseeing scientists decides that he can steal a Time Machine and give himself power but before he does that, he destroys the only lab working on time travel and in turn (he thinks) also destroying the other Time Machine. Your anonymous player decides everyone is going to die, I’ll steal the other Time Machine but his malfunctions and time jumps him into a random point in time where Krone has already started his dictatorship and you meet a resistance trying to oppose him. Those 10-25 second cutscenes are “memories” and they show the relationships of the scientists and how Krone was planning to steal the suit. At the end of the game, the paradox is, you only decided to time travel AFTER the bomb went off but if you stopped the bomb, how did you ever decide to use the suit?

It looks like the creator of this video didn't have the right video codecs for the CGI cutscenes, because I just saw a Let's Play of the ending, and there's way more to it than what we see in this old video. I think that's why the plot made no sense to the creator.

Basic gist of the story is that krone stole one of two time suits in order to gain power for some reason(that isnt necessarily explained but whatever, he basically holds the world hostage for a couple years because he can control time) You as one of the scientists is running away from the explosion of the lab and you hop into the second suit activate it and you arrive in the future after krone has taken complete control of the world. After that you run into the resistance which takes you in after they see how good of a soldier you are because of your suit, after that its pretty much say hey release this legendary squad of the rebels in order to boost moral and etc etc then it all ends with you fighting krone in his giant mech spider city thing and then you shoot him in the head ending the timeline or something like that and freeing the world . Thats the cliff notes of the story for anyone who is interested

The Timeshift manuel which came with my 360 copy of the game told you a lot more about the characters and story. Not a very efficient way of doing it, but...
Crone was a horrible person who worked for the scientist guys developing the suit. He was the project lead. Then he stole the suit and went back to the 1930s and started up a Hitlerian regime.
Your guy, the beta suit guy, was a spy who had been told to keep an eye on Crone during the suit's development to ensure he didn’t steal the suit...which kinda happened anyway. So your guy jumped in the beta suit and followed him back.

4:35 - There was supposed to be final pre-rendered cutscene before the credits where you return in the facility from the opening, defuse a bomb, then your costume warns about time paradox and warps you into unknown time and place. Literally, your character just disappears, ending this game with cliffhanger. I really want a sequel for this game.
I even wrote a TimeShift/MLP crossover in 2013 when I was 16 years old, which follows the ending of this game. It was like the costume warped protagonist into different universe XD

Been going since 1980 when I was 6 and my Dad bought my bro and I an Atari 2600. Something I didn’t realize until later is crazy remembering how poor we were, eating cut up hot dogs and pork and beans probably 5 times a week for years as a kid. Later, my Dad worked up to making $40 per hour as a machinist, but back then he supported us with a minimum wage job while going to night school and working for free in an apprenticeship program he convinced a Machinist company to start himself, yet still had to apply for. Crazy. Mad respect now that I’m older.

I think this games biggest falure is its story as it has so much promise given the premise as well as the suit just having a good design as well as the world generaly having this alternate timeline almost steam/electro punk hybrid vibe going on but they just kinda ignored it and thats a real shame
it feels like the story in the 90's doom where you can tell its there but you as the player have no fucking clue whats happening
I think the best way I can think of to describe the story is it feels like we were dropped into act 2 and then when we hit the climax it just stops. not ends stops. so your missing all the context for the events of the game and your missing any and all resolution to said events
however to me from a gameplay point of view the game feels like it realeased like half way through the balancing process where you have guns like the pistol and the assult rifle (which looks dope as hell) feel like they have no bite and the enemies feel like sponges then you get the crossbow and all the sudden enemies are falling in one hit also just a personal thing I wish the time powers lasted a few seconds longer and recharged a few seconds faster because I always feel like I am waiting for my powers to come back rather than actually using them that could just be me being bad at the game though
also there is a single use for the rewind power I have found in combat and that is if you get hit with a sticky granade you can rewind time to get it off you other than that it is only useful for puzzles

I always loved stealing the enemy weapon, walk behind them, start time, then watch they be all *Where'd my gun go*, then BAM.
Reverse time was useful in combat when you want to reverse any enemy shots.

Rewind time is great in combat if you need to undo a missed opportunity or a bad grenade throw. When they rush you with the shotgun murder maniacs later in the game on harder difficulties its almost a requirement to rewind time a few times just to figure out the exact positions of each one

It's interesting how two people can have such radically different experiences playing the same game. I ADORED the "show, don't tell" direction the developers took with this title. Everything you need to know could be gleaned from the world. Dr Krone (chronos) steals a time suit from work, travels back in time, and in so doing, kills your lady. Looking for some getback, you take the less advanced suit and follow him back in time, arriving a good deal later than Krone did. He has used this time to become a technocratic dictator, utilizing his technical knowledge to bring 1939 up to a level of technology comparable, and in some ways superior, to our own. Judging from Krone's public address messages, many citizens are rebelling against being "registered" with his regime, ergo the scrappin'. Hijinks ensue. I loved that, for once, a developer didn't hold our hands and stuff the story down our stupid throats. We arrive, as does our protagonist, in an unknown city, confused as to what the f*ck is going on. I liked that sense confusion, and having to piece it together along with the hero. Different strokes, I guess.

Krone was one of the scientists working on the time-shifting suits. He stole the Alpha suit and went back in time and took over the world with future tech and knowledge. Your character (in the Beta suit) jumps and is essentially working to undo Krone's meddling. Basic as plots go, but it *is* there. I played through it once as a kid years and years ago and I still remember the fundamentals. Love your videos, by the way. Keep up the good work.

I like this but I really wish the opening cutscene was more clear.
At first I thought it was set in the near-future and your suit protected you when history got altered by Krone so you started at the same point in time Krone shifted from just the new history's version of it. But I've also read that you shifted both back in time and across to the new timeline because your suit being damaged prevented you from jumping to the exact point Krone did, and the reason you end up in a Krone ruled timeline is you didn't jump back as far as he did and most of the game after the opening occurs in an universe Korne created parallel to your own.
However the suit was equipped so you could return to your native time and universe at will except the damage to your suit prevents a return jump. So your goal is to get the parts to repair it. Killing Krone just also happens to be a means to get the parts you need from his suit.
Edit: to be clear I originally believed it would work like in Terminator. Krone goes back in time and alters history but it takes time for his changes to take hold. So I thought before they took hold you got into a suit that would protect you and were fighting him in the altered present not the altered past. I thought your goal was to find him and kill him in the present then finish your suit, go back in time, and prevent him from altering history.

You may not have known this or it probably didn't work anymore, but there was a multiplayer for this game. The demo for it had access to a few maps and game modes. The powers worked as throwable grenades with varying abilities. You would create spheres of time-wapr. I'd say this had one of the most memorable multiplayers because you could shut off vents with a freeze time, jump off buildings with a slow time to catch yourself, fill in an entrance to a tunnel with rockets using freeze time and even have people blowthemselves up or stick themselves with the crossbow using reverse time. If you caught someone in a freeze time, you could run around the warp bubble and surround them in flame or bullets or shells. The'd be gibbed for certain. Needless to say, if the multiplayer made a comeback with modern graphics and combat mechanics, it'd be a big hit.

When you actually use time reverse in combat it is really useful for setting up more efficient attacks especially indoors. Like getting a whole squad to stand back near explosive barrels saving you ammo. Hell I even used it to repair some cover before using time stop to regen my health. Time reverse is pretty underrated.

Kronos was a scientist who worked on the project with your team, he then decided to take the first version of the time suit to go back into the past to use his advanced knowledge to take over the world. The main character was a military liaison, and when they saw what Kron was doing the other scientists put the main character into the second more refined version of the time suit. This protected the protagonist from the changes in the time line and launched him into the past to a time a few years after when Kron transported too, I believe the first version of the suit couldn't control time that well so he just kinda pointed it and hoped for the best. Basically he's just your typical crazy scientist.

Multiplayer was crazy fun back in the days. Instead of using the suit, you had grenades that used the time mechanic in the zone they landed into. You could use the reverse grenade to propulse yourself in the air. Or Stop time in a zone, shoot that zone, and have a MEGA blast at your opponent.

When I played it I understood that Crone is one of the scientists working with me (player), this short-haired girl (with whom I have an affair) and the other guy who shows up in a panic. Our job is to develop this time-manipulating costume. Crone betrays us all, steals one of the suits, implants a bomb in the lab to kill us all and erase his tracks, and travels back in time to a time that feels like the 40s or 50s (so things get a little steam punk). The civil war is going on the year Crone went there because he became a dictator there (this is pretty clear to me). Me, I take one of the prototypes of the suit before the bomb goes off and travel back in time to the same time Crone escape. The rest is easy to understand.
    I love this game.

    ON the story:
the implication in the cutscenes was that Kronen came to "your" timeline when one of the probing test hit his timeline and ?destroyed? it, and thats how he knows time travel is possible? Same with you? You are Kronen from the sideways future?
Can you tell there were 4 rewrites and 2 start-overs?

Great review, like you I loved the game's weapons and found the combat to be satisfying. As for the story... it was rewritten during development, forcing them to get rid of expensive cutscenes featuring the voice talents of Hollywood actors Dennis Quaid and Michael Ironside. The game does still have a backstory, but its only given in the manual! For an explanation of the game's original story, I did a video in which I give a detailed history of the game's troubled development:
    ruclips.net/video/pKYcDHZVgMo/видео.html
The subsequent videos are a thorough Let's Play of the entire game, during which I discuss various plot and setting details as and when they occur (those mysterious little flashbacks you get occasionally), but if you want to skip to the finale I give a full explanation of the game's ending during the credits: ruclips.net/video/06GdM95OrIU/видео.html
I've also put up the full backstory and character details (from the original manual) on my page on the LParchive: lparchive.org/TimeShift/

A quick note for those who want to play this game now, it is not officially supported by anyone, and - if you’re like me and wanting to play it on a newer system - the game doesn’t run on systems with more than 8 threads. In order to get it to run, you will need to go into BIOS and disable Hyper-threading (I know AMD calls it SMT), or disable all but 4 cores. Then the game will run.
