  • Assassin's Creed Shadows has decided to implement the most non-RPG option ever heard of in an RPG - a mode where you make no choices.

    I think we can all agree that The Office is more historically accurate than this game.

    Something to always keep in mind:
    There is value in exclusivity.
    People want something because it is unique, and like something because it sets itself apart from other things. The moment you make something for everyone, it loses any value it might have had.

    This wouldn’t be that big of a deal if they hadn’t gone down the route of making Assassin’s Creed a Witcher-style RPG. I prefer to do whatever I feel like and not stick down a cannon path. Also it has me wondering what choices you would be locked into on that playthrough. It could be something like Odyssey where you keep your father alive to help you later and you don’t have to get into a fight with your stepbrother. Or it could be that you are locked into something like that one side quest that was basically the story of Oedipus but swapping the roles of the parents (where they kid locked himself in a cage and you have to get a sword from an enemy who turns out to be the boy’s mother, and also visit a particularly flirty blacksmith who turns out to be the boy’s father).
    As an aside, I was reminded of an RPG where I accidentally made some of the canon choices without knowing it. When I played KOTOR I decided to play KOTOR 2 first, and I decided on a whim “I’ll play this as a girl.” I didn’t know that was canon. And early on Nar Shaddaa I was doing another quest where I was trying to negotiate a girl’s release from a Quarren gangster but the negotiation broke down when he demanded more money. Turns out the deal falling apart at that time and a fight breaking out was also canon.

    The Defender: "Its an Option, players don't all game the same. Some people don't like choices, Canon Mode is for Story"
    My Reasoning: "How does that add to the game when you can experience the story and look up guides for the same result?"
    Defender: "It's tedious to look up Guides, Canon Mode is an easier way to get the Story, choices get in the way"
    My Reasoning: "Then why have them? Could have been a Linear game if only Story matters, might as well be a movie or a Lore video."

    I love the title of your video. You said what I'm already thinking. I think it's dumb the direction that AC shadows is going. We had that with the Veilguard, now this? I have never played an AC game but I don't want this because it will affect other games that I care about. I hope this isn't the trend that these big game companies are doing but the writing's on the wall already.

    This just makes me sad. Another step towards games just playing them selves. It already plagues the mobile market.

    I play a lot of Indie games. They are smaller teams and can focus more on the story. Sometimes they are a flop but their could be lots of Gems in the rough.
    By the way I love your puppies!!

    AC should have never been an RPG in the first place and now they are stuck because they cant actually make good RPGs and now they have to somehow appease old fans of the older AC's and the New fans of the last 2 games

    I think this is to avoid the backlash they got when the cannon for odyssey dropped and it revealed that kassandra was the cannon character and she reproduced at which point people freaked out that lesbian kassandra was being erased and accusations of homophobia were thrown and ubisoft had to back track and change the cannon 😂

    No wonder why i'm still playing some 20-25 years old games.
    It's like in "back to the future" except the whole world travelled to a parallel universe, then came back, but at the wrong timeline where most games past 2016-18 are kinda shit.
    Keyword: most. There are few games that are goldmines on an otherwise bland and mediocre aaa regurgitation machine.
    The indie is where's it at now, but the engines being so easily accessible can also be a topic on its own, as (being a little cynical) can lead to people that don't know what they do to make whatever and overbloat the market with unoptimized stuff like NO distant LOD, no polybudget on models or stuff that aims for photorealism at expenses of performance and framerate (yeah, this is a bit more technical discussion but I think it could be one of the many drops that are filling up the cup)

    This game will floop hard. They added in a black man, as a samurai, where there are no historical records of any black samurais even existing, trying to add that in as a historical fact, wikipedia has still not changed that, it is like they are trying to rewrite history of a different nation to fitt their narative. Ever. That they showed off that half torii gate as premotinal meterial, for a get set in 1500s Japan. That half gate is a ww2 remnent. After the yanks drop the sun on them, in 1945, that is over 400 years diffrence time vise. That they used chinese architecture.

    you hit the answer to your question less than five seconds after you asked it: "RPGs aren't for" the tourists both developing the game or the audience they specifically targeted with this game. there is no other answer...

    I don't even understand how Ubisoft thought this would be a thing worth mentioning to people. This sounds rude lol but the person who would be into a game that auto plays all story decisions in their game, most likely isn't the kind of person who is even looking at gaming articles, so this article pretty much will reach people who already dislike Ubisoft lol.

    That is possibly the dumbest option I have ever seen added to a game. This isn't accessibility, or a difficulty mode, this is just laziness from what I can see.

    Mass audiences still want to PLAY video games. This nonsense is made for game reviewers who are too stupid to complete a platformer tutorial. The devs are making sure they have time for the story by making a cinematic mode. Might as well just turn game cutscenes into a movie reviewers can stream at home.

    "Canon Mode" might be the worst of all insults to gamers. I've lost fkn track with those people, is this woke too? Well, possibly, if for instance some specific romance options will be included. Also what's the point of putting the same effort into writing different outcomes and creating those with the same level of conviction? For the player, by the time they finish the game, it can turn out that all you've done was wrong??... It's just pandering to dumb people AND most importantly - lazy developers who won't even need to think about the previous story-branches while creating a sequel - it all contributes directly to having more shallow, more streamlined product. DISGUSTING. DO NOT BUY THIS CRAP.

    Assassin's Creed Odyssey was a rpg, and has multiple endings based on actions and choices. If the devs chose a cannon path it would have likely not been the one I love or fought to get. This Shadows is going backwards from that and the idiot writing that article is basically saying choosing your path is too scary to do for players. That means the writer is not an rpg fan and the coming game is even further from something I want to pay for.
    I began playing TTRPGs back in the days of Original D&D, choices enrich the world and experience. Without choices, the game is just a digital novel that you ride through on rails. Fun but for a RPG nut like me, it ultimately is forgettable.

    • @BlueBD
      @BlueBD Месяц назад +2

      They did choose a canon path. It's quite literally in the Book the released with Odyssey and what is shown in Valhalla. Your choices literally don't matter, because that's literally how the story of assassins creed is built. Your not supposed to have any narrative choices. They are strictly gameplay related. This is nothing but an attempt to cater to older AC fans but of course that doesnt actually work. because the game is still built as an RPG.
      These "Choices" are Only in the last 2 games.

    • @dirkbsilver9260
      @dirkbsilver9260 Месяц назад +1

      @BlueBD tell you something that might shock you. Most gamers never consider the "extra materials" publishers put out. Especially rpg freaks like me. That all is fanfiction add ons that often detract from the games they are supposed to support. In point of fact they don't include this stuff in the games you buy after it's been released years ago. Choices made in game matter alone at that point. If extras mattered then why play any rpg at all? The players get ultimate say in the end as the extra kitsch stuff gets lost to time, but when the game is designed to ignore choices in total it's no longer an rpg.

    • @TheAbysmalCritic
      @TheAbysmalCritic  Месяц назад

      You still make choices in Final Fantasy games.
      At least you did the last time I played one, which was Final Fantasy 15.
      Dialogue options, things that influence relationships. The end was generally the same, but you have choice over how the story plays.

    • @gejamugamlatsoomanam7716
      @gejamugamlatsoomanam7716 Месяц назад

      @TheAbysmalCritic doesn't change the plot, and any romance is fixed and linear. Dialog just gives different responses that don't do much of anything.

    • @TheAbysmalCritic
      @TheAbysmalCritic  Месяц назад +1

      @@gejamugamlatsoomanam7716 And they're STILL choices. They DO effect how someone experiences the story, if only minorly.
      But so do all the other choices that come with playing and RPG from how you spec out your character to the weapons you pick. They are all choices.
      There is no TRULY choice free RPG.
      That said, in an RPG where you allow choices that do effect the game, it's dumb to include a "no choices need to be made mode".
