    Have two mature hollys and two started from stems about 6" tall. The mature ones get snow dumped on them every year and now have at least one branch that has grown very large. I thought that was a good thing till I saw this video. Thank you. I know what to do now.

    Three years ago I planted a row of Blue Princess Holly across the back of my lot to create a privacy screen. Since then I have slowly learned the pruning techniques demonstrated in this video. Had I seen this video prior to selecting Holly for my privacy screen I would have went with something maintenance free like Blue Arrow Juniper instead.

    Great video. Plan to continue working 2 hollies used as a hedge front of front porch. Hollies do not make good rectangular shapes. They are ruined by 15 years of outer pruning only.

    I need to prune a Blue Princess that has the same issue. This video was great! Thanks for making it.

    i have several holly bushes that are more like trees in how large they are. i would like to get them back to managable size. if the trunks are 4 to 5 inches in diameter is it possible to get them back down in size or is it too large to to consider pruning? some of these are 20 to 30 feet tall.
    another question, would holly branches that have been pruned make good mulch if i run them through my chipper? want to make sure im not planting a bunch of new hollys with the mulch.

    Hi John, I am a gardener and today on a job the landscaper took out a holly and was going to mulch it when I asked if I could have it for my garden at home. It had been clipped, however about an eight inch root ball. The plant is about 3feet high. I planted it in a tight packed mulch and rich soil. Can you give me any pointers. I'm in zone 5 in Canada. August is not ideal I know but I just wanted to save the plant.
    Thanks,
    Jay

    Thank you! This is the most helpful video I have found. At what point should you not prune in order to let the plant harden off.

    Quick question. We have some Hollys that are much older and therefore bigger. To my knowledge, they have always only been trimmed with power gas hedge trimmers. Most of the main stems are probably 3 inches in diameter. Would this process be beneficial to my Hollys or are they to old to "renewal prune"?

      ***** This is what I ended up with. goo.gl/photos/4vo7r795bCNX8zXP6
      A few years ago I trimmed them out of the underside of the roof. I just chopped about half way down and removed all the top growth. Today I tried some of your tactics. Hopefully they will fill in.

      @@snyderwood I actually got a wild hair under my saddle 25 yrs. and took some mature hollies along my garage that were 5-6 ft. tall there when I bought the house -- in mid August in Oklahoma. Took them down to 2-3 feet. branches and all -- similar to your bush -- stripped them bare of foliage to mostly trunks. Watered them like heck for weeks and weeks and they all survived. Luckily. I wouldn't do that again in August having learned much more since then. those hollies are still going strong. They are tough plants.

    Great info... I purchased 13 Blue Princess and a prince for a hedge. Are these easy to maintain at 5-6 ft rather than 8-10ft as the tag states? Will I stress the shrub if I keep them tightly groomed? Thank you kindly

    very informative video. I have a blue princess holly that I've been afraid to attack but it needs to be cut back. This video helps the fear factor. The male plant though looks sickly and just low growth on the ground and I am not sure why it is not growing upward. The female grows berries so I'm assuming that the male plant is still a pollinator. Any suggestions?

    Hey John.. I planted 3 gallon blue maid hollies for privacy... I planted them 3 feet apart on center. Did I plant them to close? That was what the nursery recommended. They look great now and I plan on staying in this home a very long time. Thank you.

    good pieces of information and explanations! Do you know whether Ilex Crenata can be propagated by air layering? Thank you

      Ilex meserveae can be propagated from cuttings. So, I would think they will grow from air layering also. Probably the same thing for Ilex crenata.

    Excellent video, I have been wanting to learn how to prune correctly for a long time.
    I would like to ask your opinion about Leyland Cypress trees. I have a shady back yard with two 40 year old oak tress, I do get some sun during the afternoon. Do you think the Leyland trees will make it? I wanted to plant a living fence to block an ugly view.
    Thank you very much.

      I do love the holly nelly r steven trees, do you think that could work in the shade area? I do get filter sun during the afternoon.
      I am not familiar with the hemlocks but will google it.
      Thank you so much for your adivece :)

    I would appreciate your responds when you have few moments?
    Always, I really do appreciate your videos, it is all very educational.
    Thanks again!

    hey i like all your videos i've seen! Thanks!
    - one thing i wonder: does all this apply to all varieties of holly? (especially wondering about the very small-leaved holly. the one that the leaves at a glance look like boxwood)

    • @CTSCAPER
      @CTSCAPER  5 лет назад

      Yes, Ilex crenata, Japanese Holly can be pruned the same way. I don't usually have to thin Japanese Holly out as much. I think I made a video about pruning Japanese Holly selectively, I know I made one about Boxwood.

    • @coelacanth9821
      @coelacanth9821 5 лет назад +2

      that was fast! i was just about to go back outside!
      - yes i just saw the video on "steed's japanese holly" but it's not about renewal; so i'll consider this one a basic guideline. (in addition to what i've learned mostly by trial & error)
      my sister's property (here in ct also) has lots of beautiful plant life that's been 100% ignored for about 16 years before she bought it 5-6 years ago. so even the most low-maintenance shrubs need help.
      Thanks for your reply and all your helpful videos!

    I know this video is old and I don't doubt that you knew what you were doing but you should have shown a later result to support what you are telling people. This holly will destroy someone's business if the homeowner came home to see this. Even if you know what you are talking about, generally people don't care about this type of thing and will just have a dead one pulled and a new one put in. Just offering a future suggestion sir.
