  • How to prune Inkberry Holly (Ilex Glabra) Selectively for a more natural habit and improved health. Using pruning shears you can prune your inkberry holly for with an informal habit. I like to prune this way because it is more forgiving and I can prune the shrubs a little at a time. I recommend you try selective pruning on your shrubs.

I love this method! I've watched it a few times and it is definitely helpful.

John - I didn't see a more specific answer to the when is best pruning time for these plants. We live in Rhode Island and use these shrubs extensively, due to the fact that deer don't eat them. That's actually not true so we have to fence them in the winter. I'd like to do some pruning and assume that March would be a good time to do that because growth hasn't officially started and the cuts will not dehydrate and die back 1". Guidance would be very much appreciated. Timing is everything.

Thank you for this video. I pruned my inkberry shrub yesterday and thought I pruned too much. Felt desperate about it. After this video I feel so much relive and hope it will grow back in the next few months.

You're going to be fine. Inkberry will grow from any joint between a leaf and a stem. Watch what happens and apply it next time you prune.

Please do more pruning videos. I've gone from shearing ALL shrubs/bushes with electric trimmer to selectively pruning everything! I started last fall and over the winter so I am finally seeing the fruits of my labor now in spring.

I had some inkberry shrubs installed along a fencing facing west. Due to my negligence they had grown grossly out of proportion. I took a chance last February and pruned one shrub down to an appropriate height, however it was leafless. The risk paid off and by August it had fully leafed up. This year the rest get the same treatment. I'm in USDA zone 6.5

Great video! My situation is that we neglected to trim our inkberry hedge for years. The plants are now ~7' tall with most of the branches having leaves only on the last ~9 inches. We would like to get these ~2 feet shorter and realize that this is most likely a multi year process. Since they are in front of our house, we want to keep some green during this transition process. The plants are arranged two deep so we have plenty of depth to work with. What are your thoughts?

This was done really well, even though you were not sure if you explained it well. :). Hopefully, you will prevent those shrub balls we see everywhere...one shrub at a time. Thank you!

I have had this house 7 years and the landscaper planted an inkberry, which I have never had and have no idea how to care for one. It looks nothing like these. It's small and about half of the remaining branches have leaves (pretty ones) and the others are a grayish looking color. it's about 2 feet high. any suggestions on its care? Also, what types of fertilizing would you suggest? Thanks so much

Hi John. I think you did an excellent job of explaining selective pruning. I've read a couple of different opinions on when to prune the Shamrock Holly. After watching this video I think I can trust your answer to be the most informed. When can I prune my Shamrock Holly? Is there a 'best" time? I live in northwest NJ and it's the middle of August. The shrub is 45" tall and looks "leggy" due to improper pruning in the past. The top of the "ball" is 50" x 35". I do want to keep the shrub about 35-40" tall.

***** Great! Thanks. I'll prune next week, but only partially and perhaps again late winter. Again, I think you did a great job showing exactly where to make the cuts. Your average homeowner doesn't know that it makes a difference where you cut the limb.

U should have your own TV show called land designs unlimited. U certainly do have the knowledge of horticulture.

I just watched this video again (I've done some selective pruning based on in the past and needed a refresher). I have to do some major selective pruning. I am afraid to do rejuvenating pruning because I'm afraid they will look horrible and they are in the main garden in the front of my house (I need to reduce the height of my bushes about a foot because they are getting too high). In USDA Zone 6b (Burlington County, NJ), this time of spring is best time to prune - correct? I'm confused because you say this is good time but a few other sites say late winter.

I have 9 year old leggy inkberry. Do I have to take them down to the ground? At 1 ft they would be all wood. At 2 ft they would have some green. Do I try for a rejuvenation type cut ?

Just do what I do in this video. I think I took a lot of the branches down 1-2' into the shrub. Do that a few years in a row and your shrub will be 1-2' shorter.

Thank you for the reply!! Their form is completely different than the shrubs in your video. But I think it will work.
