At a late-night meeting in Jonestown in mid-October 1978 - a month before the deaths - Jim Jones speaks to his followers about his two major concerns of the evening, and of the period leading up to Leo Ryan’s visit: manifestations of disillusionment with Jonestown, which has led to malingerers and runaways; and the threats represented by hostile relatives.

Jonestown/People's Temple was real commentary on what people are willing to tolerate, in the name of achieving utopia.
"Special care" was hell in itself in Jonestown. They kept those people in a zombielike/comatose state 24/7. Paradise? Nowhere close. Sad and tragic. This man was always a monster, he didn't suddenly turn into one.

For context, he would have people who tried to escape drugged and put in the "mental division" that he's talking about. So he's basically talking about how he's going to make his prisoners' lives even worse.

The way he turns around the "betrayal" by his adopted daughter from a personal set back to a tool to get his own followers to turn against their families back in the United States is chilling and fascinating. The concerns of stateside relatives were ultimately what led to Congressman Ryan's visit. Jones' fear of defections and the truth getting about the horrors going on inside Jonestown were what ultimately lead to the massacre.

He literally and figuratively threw the Bible out during one of his sermons. He told his congregation that religion and God are bullshit and was merely a means to an end for him. As he blasphemed the church erupted in applause, cheers, and shouts and hoots of approval. They were totally unable to think for themselves.

Sounds like typical amphetamine rambling to me. He was super addicted to multiple uppers & downers by this point. When you never sleep, you start to go crazy. It wouldn't necessarily cause slurred speech or other "drunk" symptoms, but you best believe speed can make you insane when abused.

It was part of his appeal. He was amazingly charismatic and a master manipulator. His voice added to the whole effect, as he could put on a very dramatic and forceful performance in his sermons and speeches, which he would tailor to his audience either of members or non members. He knew very well what he was doing.

I still believe that Jim Jones lead his people to the wrong direction. Jones was not a man of God.He was the voice of Satin.He forced his people against their will to follow him and made them do themselves in. People like Jim Jones makes me glad I choose not to go to church.
Howard Cunniffe believe me, he had nothing to do with church. These people were conditioned over the years to do what he said. I have never heard a minister talk like this. This was mind control. He talked about suicide all the time. Night after night he would have these people drink the kool aide and told them they would die but they didn’t. It was like practice. It was done so many times that one follower said he did it so often that they had gotten to the point that didn’t care if they did die. On the night it became real, most drank it without hesitation because he had conditioned them to drink. Some did resist so they were injected with a syringe.
I do believe that Jones had these people brain washed into doing it. But it did have something to do with church. He had them do this stupid test in his own church.
Also too much cursing going on there not a sign of a person who's thinking right as a leader.

After listening to this tape how could anyone NOT think Jim Jones is insane. Jones says he is sick and tired of chasing through the jungle with as many as 50 people looking for deserters. No wonder he is so pissed off. So many people desperate to leave, so sad. No need to worry, Congressman Ryan is coming and he has the congressional shield to protect them. If a psychopath showed who they really are at the beginning then no one would want to go anywhere near them. If a man who is abusive and controlling goes on a date with a girl and he hits her, she won't see him again, but if he pretends to be nice for a while until she falls in love with him, then once he starts to gradually show who he really is she won't leave as she gradually accepts the escalating abuse step by step.
