  • This Platinum 3776 with a music nib is on loan from Jack Hernandez. I've already done a review of the pen which is linked below, but while I have it in my possession, I wanted to compare it to the Natami Inception I bought in 2019 as a very close copy of the 3776. I talk about the parts and features of the pens, provide some size comparisons and comparison measurements, and then do writing samples. After the writing samples, I talk about what I like and what I don't like about the pens. Please feel free to use the chapters provided below to skip to various parts of the review.

    isn't it fascinating how things work sometimes? This video went live this morning and around mid-day, I received a notification from my CamelCamelCamel (watches for Amazon products to hit pre-selected price targets) about a Platinum 3776 Bourgogne with a coarse nib that I had set a price target for. It hit that target and I picked the pen up for $150 Cdn which is around $118US. It is on its way from Japan. I won't hold my breath, but it is exciting and timely!

    Interesting comment from my review - Franks Vars - The Natami "Flight of time" is the clone of the Platinum Century 3776 Nice.
    Platinum started its activity in 1919: on the ring of the Natami cap there is engraved 1919. Platinum dedicates its pen to the French city of Nice: in 1919 the American journalist Herman Bernstein was in France to attend the Paris Peace Conference. Berneistein wrote "The flight of time and other poems": the writing "The flight of time" is the one on the Natami nib, without "the" on the cap.

    I keep looking at pricing of 3776 on all various sites-an interesting adventure keeping track of exchange rates, stock pricing, color popularity, nib option popularity, shop discounts ... but I’ll be ready when my deal comes along so thanks for great reviews! Love the scritchy 3776 nib👍, scritchy not to be confused with scratchy nib👎, or scrunching which is sound of your boots on cold snow walking to mail box or to school ... sound informing you how cold you’ll be in a few blocks without proper attire (not a wonderful sound if walking far but I get nostalgic for Alberta when I hear it). oh the scrunching of snow at the gloaming of the day! How long does it take to freeze fountain pen ink in a jacket pocket or backpack at say -35C? In watercolors it’s best to use vodka rather than water at those temps, if god forbid the scene inspires painting at such temps. Hmmm mixing ink with vodka to explore & document the frozen north without changing pen choices? I wonder how Franklin did it-did he leave a frozen pen next to a journal filled with scrunching scribbling?

    Thanks for the review! I was thinking of getting the natami myself, if only for the cool nib graphic. I have both the century and gathered 3776 as well. I just want to point out that the gathered is more of a "heritage" model for platinum, remaining essentially the same (save for a few changes - nib and the number of ribs on the body), so it will have some design "flaws" which may not suit modern tastes (cap feels loose - kind of like a Lamy studio, no slip n' seal, and the pen just rattles all around), but despite that, I pick it up every time over the Century for how comfortable and ergonomic it is, with the snap cap and longer body, and especially the longer section.
    Looking forward to your thoughts on your very own #3776!

    It's funny, I've seen these pens in Bobby's store all the time, but never really gave them a second look... Now that I look more closely, the Natami in light blue kind of peaks my interest. Might be a nice pen to ink with something like Diamine Marine, which has recently become one of my favorite inks.
    The F-nib isn't really my thing, but it looks like a pretty standard size, so maybe I can put a spare Jowo BF nib in it.
    Maybe I missed it in your review - would you say the Natami is a good eyedropper option?
    At the same time, I already have a few yet-to-be-inked pens, and two Ranga's (8B and 4C - couldn't choose!) in the mail, so maybe I should hold off for now.

    Doug another interesting comparison video. I have a 3776 and find it very satisfying to write with for all of the reasons you noted, albeit I have a fine nib.
    A slightly unrelated question, you showed a penbbs 308 galaxy in the size comparison. I just received the same pen a couple of days ago. Interestingly the cap band shows the model as a 266. Do you know if the 266 became the 308 or what the difference might be as the retailer advertised it as a 308 / 266.
    Thanks again for the video.
    Richard

    • @InkquiringMinds
      @InkquiringMinds  3 года назад +2

      I think the history of that 266 cap band goes back to when the pen was originally designed and built. It was the 266 and had the cap threads on the end of the section. They redesigned it to the way it is now and changed the model number to 306 but didn't change the die or stamp or whatever machine makes the cap bands. So it remains 266 on the band.

    I have a 3776 Century with a SF nib. It'll take a long time to get it as smooth as I like my pens. I prefer buying used vintage-y 3776 models that are already smooth. The model with rings pops up in Taiwanese buy and sell groups quite a lot (starting around CAD 135 with the JIS symbol on the nib). I like the Natami because of its nib that is a great fit for my writing style and the price point is attractive too.

I have burgundy one and the first one feels scratchy even on a better paper usually used to print packing slips. So I asked for a replacement and the replacement is very smooth on that better paper but a little bit scratchy on the cheap one. Also you can get an adapter which will let you use short international cartridges

    I have the Platinum President and 2 Platinum 3776 pens (one with “M” and one with “Broad” nib), but I do not have a Natami. Interestingly, Platinum could perhaps enforce its patent in Japan (as to the “slip & seal”), but I am not sure whether the patent is a design patent or patent of the engineering (the latter, if unique, novel, useful, could be patented internationally). Intellectual property is a topic I just touched upon in classes I taught. None of us who are engaged in a more generic practice of law are ever really experts in patent law. Plus, recall that I have not actively practiced law for the past 30 years. My main point is that some of these mechanisms are not as innovative as one might think. Mere looks are not protected (except in countries that provide “design” patents, which Japan does or at least has previously provided for its own market). Why Natami wants the pen to look so like the platinum. They could easily differentiate their own fountain pen from all others.

    • @InkquiringMinds
      @InkquiringMinds  3 года назад +1

      There are a LOT of unknowns here. I have no idea WHO Natami is. I suspect it is yet another "brand" given to a line of pens made by one of the big three; Hero, Wing Sung (or Wing Sung) or Jinhao. Trying to sue a Chinese company for international patent violation could be fraught with protracted legal difficulties and hence not worth the effort.

    Every time someone tells me, definitely, this is how to pronounce Diamine... it's a different pronunciation. I prefer to believe they're a small Italian firm named dee-AH-mee-Nay.

    A fountain pen with a cap that can’t be posted! Outrageous- grounds for divorce. Just look 👀 at a Waterman Carene, arguably the most beautiful pen of all time. I rest my case. Humph.

      I LOOOVE my Waterman Carène and the way it posts and feels in the hand.

      Doug, have you tried a Jinhao 9056 with a natural wood finish. Picked up one with an Ebony finish, gold accents, posts well - bin ones that don't.

      Sorry about the message. I've been having trouble with the garage door having a major psychotic episode. Having to get a tech out to administer some TLC. I've only got a couple of hammers and a wrench and a very short fuse.

      @@MrAndrew1953 LOL Perhaps the short fuse is the problem with the garage door?
