    When introducing cats DO NOT HOLD THE KITTEN. From your cat’s perspective they’ll look bigger and more threatening. Another thing is that it’s dangerous for your hands. If your cats fight, they fight. The safest thing to do is to separate them and then introduce them via scent.

    This is the absolute WRONG way to introduce cats. Introducing cats this way makes the process much harder and much much longer. You need to start slowly. Give your big cat something that the kitten has been playing with or sleeping on. The big cat will smell the kitten. After they smell the kitten you give them food. If you give them food right after smelling the kitten they will say "Hey every time I smell this I get food" and it will make them accept the smell. Once you have completed that step, you should continue going slowly, having them see each other through a gated fence but not allow them to get over to each other. Continue giving them food using this routine until they feel comfortable smelling and seeing each other. After ample time doing this, bring the two cats into the same room. Let them explore each other from a distance. The cat will approach the kitten to investigate and determine that the kitten is not a threat. Congratulations you have two cats that don't hate each other.
    You have no idea how many times I have seen people complain that their cats always fight because they didn't introduce them using this method. Unless you do, the cats will see each other as competition instead of play mates because for a kitten, if a big cat walks up and hits them, the kitten will start to hate the big cat. The kitten will also start hissing and arching their backs which only continues to fuel the big cat's concern. It's an endless loop of not being sure if they are hostile -> being nervous -> Becoming hostile validating their hatred for each other.

    I introduce my kitties (and fosters) by giving them a common toy to play with. After they play, they all get a few treats or I give them a full meal. Cats usually groom after eating, so they’re pretty relaxed after all of that & it seems to make it easier to all be in the same space together.

    Awwww. I love a happy ending. At first when the kitten was in the carrier I thought uh-oh. Plus I saw fight in the title. But your cat didn't seem aggressive. Just hissing out of fear. Not out of being territorial which can often create a much worse result. But by the end they're playing 😊

  • @slate2720
    @slate2720 4 года назад +3

    I know it's not going to mean much but... The best way to do this if your original cat might hurt a new one, usually is to put the new cat in an isolated room or area that they can't interact between but can smell each other. Then after learning the surroundings and whatnot, switch the original cat to the room and let the new cat into the open area. Then introduce them if neither cat is showing too much territorial aggression like urinating in unusual places or yowling like a tom does. Intact adult cats will far more likely kill a new kitten, but some queens might take in a baby as her own. Teen cats will legit terrorize an elderly cat until it dies.
    I had two sibling cats separated for a week and the sister became aggressive after meeting her brother again. It all depends on the cats personality. My old cat gets adjusted to other cats fast and just is grumpy for a few days, but momma cat who still is intact until her next vet visit wants to claim other cats (and dogs) homes and chase them out... Very confrontational. Her own mother was similar but more bold towards humans in that way.

      @@amirahnirikays5517 For any future inquiries, as I hope it's a little easier by now, but sometimes it can take a LOT LONGER< LIKE YEARS! Anyway, first start by feeding them on opposite sides of the door. For instance, have 1 person be in a room with 1 cat and close the door and feed cat on that side of room, on the other side of the door/say the hallway to said room, feed the main house cat, against the closed door! Do that every day for 1 week, then open the door at same time every day and if you have it put a dog gate there where they can see each other, and feed them about 5 feet apart/2.5ft on each side of gate, then slowly close the distance until there eating right next to each other. Then remove the gate! And hopefully that will be that! Also try giving them catnip by each other! So that when they go by each other and cooperate they get catnip/rewarded! That usually works! Have had success with dog/cat where the cat was the bad one. And dog/cat where the dog was the bad one. And cat/cat where the house cat was the bad(hissing instigator) one!

They chased each other all over the house for days, then started to sleep together. A month later, I got him back. Musette looked all over meowing for him. When I brought a 2 month kitten to my mom’s house for her lonely cat she hissed at him-fearless kitten stage-for 2 hours, then did the “mother cat call” and threw him down and washed his ears!

Now he's been in the living room with us, while the kitten was in my daughters arm & not a bother on him. But I was not nieve to place her on the ground. My BS is the calmest, coolest, sweetest bfg I could imagine. Until I saw him turn on the poor kitten. All she did was walk past him. He lowers his head & I think he looks at her like prey. He's an indoor cat. He doesn't like going out. He's not an old cat.... hes 1 year & 4 months. Im actually afraid we will have to rehome the kitten. Please help.

      No need! This is actually normal even if it does look scary. My older cat did that to my younger cat when I first got him, and he had to learn how to be more gentle with him due to size. It takes them some time, but they do establish boundaries on their own and become inseparable! Do intervene if you feel like the older cat isn’t respecting the younger ones boundaries. When the younger one gets older, it’ll also learn how to defend itself as the weight makes a huge difference.

    I do not want to get preachy here, but you made some fundamental mistakes in bringing these two cats together the way you did. It unnecessarily stressed them out with a potential for harm to come about to either cat. It also no doubt left these cats with an extreme negative memory of their meeting and the other cat.
    Many people have made valuable comments here and they should be heeded and any future introductions conducted properly. My only hope is that these two cats were not emotionally scarred by the incident and will become used to each other and build a positive relationship that will last their lifetimes as when they don't cause far more trouble throughout their lives for a simple mistake as this video showed us.
    I wish you all the best for your cats long, harmonious and happy life together and that this incident will not linger or evolve into deeper problems and resentments between the cats.
    Please be more considerate to the needs of the cats and not of the camera 🤞
