Thanks for being so honest, Cody! I roll my eyes at those programs that say they can have you speaking a new language in 1 day or 1 month or whatever! It takes lots of time and patience.
The word “can” is a teaser. In theory, someone probably can do it if they turn their life upside-down to take on the challenge; but realistically many/most people don’t have the time (or desire, patience, energy, motivation etc).
Man!!! If I could speak like Cody, I’d be thrilled to pieces. It’s been almost 4 years and I can hardly speak it and when I hear other Hispanic people talking I am just completely lost. Well done Cody!!!
What has helped me some (besides 4 years of dabbling in Duolingo) is listening to videos like this on RUclips with subtitles. Maria is easy to understand and follow for me (thanks!) but some other "spanish teachers" go at a faster speed and are harder to follow even with subtitles. However the variety helps make it more likely you won't need to hear someone who sounds just like the person you learned from in order to understand.
I love the classes i am learning but don't quite no enough to talk to someone. There are some students from mexico city that come to mass at saint marys. I have said hello but am not good enough yet to carry a conservation. Need more time thank you for the classes
Bob, If let them know that you are trying to learn, they may help you. It all starts with a basic greeting, asking a basic question, and answering. I have the SpanisDict app on my phone and have used it to find I word I don't know. There is a housekeeping lady at my workplace from the Domincan Republic, who knows almost no English. We practice for a minute or two each time we see each other. At times she helps me with my pronunciation. Sometimes we understand each other, sometimes we don't, but it's getting better.
I'm really impressed with both of you! While watching this I thought "Why haven't I learned that much the last year?" until I realized that I was watching and understanding the entire thing in Spanish. Thank you so much for all the great lessons!
Me too!!!!! Cody’s sentences are impressive and I was down on myself for not being able to make proper sentences. But I realized at the end that I understood about 80% of the video!
I love that Cody is in these videos. it gives extra motivation to us new starters. im 8 months in, and it looks like on the same track as he. very good job to you Cody. Love your videos Maria. It is my go to study when I don't feel like getting in my books but want to get my 45 minutes of spanish in for the day
Jajaja, absolutely the same problem with my husband: I m learning Spanish and every day I tell him to talk to me in Spanish, and in 5 minutes we again speak in English 😂🥺. Cannot change it 😞😓
This channel is GOLD. This was a very charming and humorous episode. Cody speaks slowly enough that I can understand much of what he says. Ive been taking classes for about 3 months and this channel is my favorite supplement to my classes.
I understand exactly how Cody feels; learning Spanish “for an adult” is NOT easy. I have a similar situation: I live in Puerto Rico and my wife is obviously a native Spanish speaker. The verbs are just so very much more complicated in Spanish than in English. I think that I am very close to the level that Cody is at, but I do not consider myself to be fluent at all. In my humble opinion, to be fluent is to be able to have a conversation at full speed with anyone that you meet on the street and actually understand 99% of what is being communicated. Anyway, I love the videos and the tips are very helpful and right on-target. Keep up the good work Cody.
Haha, I laugh so hard at the examples , because my husband speaks Spanish and I am learning, and these situations are so true haha. I'm always asking him.. What's this, what's that, hows my pronunciation? Haha and he's like... Busy, or doesn't wanna speak spanish xD.. Good job to Cody, I hear more and more words and longer sentences! And Maria I love hearing you speak. :) you make the videos nice and clear. Gracias a los dos. :)
agreed. my hubby is not very helpful or patient with me either. He doesn't even try to gesticulate hints like she did with the laundry. But with the help of my Mother-in-law and sisters-in-law, My spanish is pretty fluent. (even though I still feel shy about trying to speak to people I don't really know.) I just recently discovered this channel and i like it for filling in a bunch of the holes in my understanding. It's also great for helping my kids with their spanish!!
This is my favorite video of yours by far. I am just rule trying to teach myself Spanish. I took 2 semesters of Spanish on college and liked it a lot. I fell in love with the Spanish language and in particular the different sounds of it. I was married to two Puertoriquenos and didn’t speak Spanish. It meant I couldn’t really connect with the family because some spoke no English, very little English and others spoke English quite well. But it was a barrier. I wanted to learn it so badly to fully participate in the language that bound them together. So, I have finally decided to teach myself Spanish. The first thing that I started doing was took Idahosa Ness’ Mimic Method course to learn to hear and mimic the sounds of Spanish. Phenomenal and gave me the foundation for the language. I met a great Mexican lady and told her I was learning and I said some in Spanish (not a lot) but I guess my accent and pronunciation was pretty good that she smiled and started speaking to me in fast Spanish. She forgot that quickly that I wasn’t fluent and had just began to learn. It gave me confidence that I can do it. This video is also very helpful in that department. Because it showcases what you could do with one year of studying/learning. I would say that he reached fluency in being able to communicate clearly and understand what is being said to him. Now he can continue on and begin to sound more like native speakers with more vocabulary and improved grammatical skills. He is progressing faster than a child. He gives me hope that with continued doing something in the language daily of listening to native speakers either in person or other means, reading in the language, and trying to write in the language outside of speaking in it will propel him further and I will tap into the compound effect, getting better at it everyday. I may not be “fluent” in a year, everyone is different but I can’t lose if I keep moving forward. That’s the whole point. This is why like your videos a lot. They give me hope and they’re teaching me a lot as well. Muchas gracias,
First, I love that you film from Nashville. 2nd you all are the only ones that I can understand when you speak spanish. You speak clearly and slowly.... THANK YOU!! Finally, spanish videos that help me.
I love Cody. He is slightly more fluent that I am remembering 3 years of Spanish studied over 30 years ago. He makes the videos much more accessible for me. :)
You two are so cute! It's so brave of you, too, Cody to share your true self and frustrations. It helps the rest of us feel your are truly relatable. Thank you and don't be too hard on yourself!
Mucho respeto Cody.
Good job Cody! You have come a very long way. I have had a goal of fluency for the last few years but have come to the realization that what I thought was"fluent" was "native speaker" and what I I thought was "conversational" is actually fluent. By that definition, I have been fluent for a couple of years, but I always feel the need to learn more. My wife is also a native Spanish speaker and people assume I learned from her. She is "supportive" but doesn't actively help me learn. Keep up the good work! I enjoy your channel very much. I have used some of your activities in the ESL class I teach.
Best.video.ever...'Just tell me in english'...still laughing...and I will never say 'quiero ser fluido' again. You two are awesome. Hands down the best explanation of 'fluidez' i've heard. Ever. Gracias!
Thanks a lot Maria and Cody. I know you may lose your motivaiton sometimes. Hope you wont stop creating new videos.
He is doing well. I have achieved a high level of fluency in Spanish after teaching myself for 7 months now. I will make a video but i will wait until i have reached a year. I believe i am at the (early C1 level )and i hope to reach the C2 level in another 6 months. These videos were very helpful to help me to reach the intermediate level. Great Job guys!
You teach with such joy and patience and it is lovely to see! ...(especially for us who desire sooooo much to learn but don't have a person with patience to listen and practice with!) Thank you for all these videos
Cody, your vocabulary has certainly expanded. I had to look up quite a few of the words that you and Maria used in the video. I had my year anniversary earlier this month. You're definitely ahead of me. Though I have few opportunities for Spanish conversation. Mostly I talk to myself. Congratulations on your year and your progress.
That is a certain plus he has. if you married to or dating a native Spanish speaker that is certainly and edge, however i do understand no matter what he did have to put much effort as well into learning on his own.
wow!! Cody is really getting fluent. I envy him. I wish I had a teacher like you who's there all the time...but I am learning.......thanks for your videos......
I feel for you Cody, people somehow think that by having an partner who speaks another language you will pick it up automatically, like by osmosis or something... it's SO hard, don't underestimate how far you have come! I can give you a couple of tips: Firstly: I HATED speaking with my other half in his language after years speaking in English.... it felt so awkward and clunky....not to mention that if you argue you quickly go back to your own languages :-p So we started off by dedicating only Sundays to speaking his language (since we were both off work and less likely to be tired or busy), then progressed to the whole weekend, then to alternating days... it's so annoying but I promise it gets easier!! The 2nd thing I'd suggest is doing some language exchanges with other people (sorry Maria!!) It takes some of the pressure off her to be your 'teacher', you will hear other expressions and 'ways of speaking' and the language won't only be about you two or your relationship (even if this is a great reason to learn a language). I believe that the more personal experiences you have with the language, the more you will feel you have 'ownership' of it, and so the more motivated you will feel to carry on learning. Finally, thanks for doing these videos guys!!! They are really fun and I'm sure all your fans appreciate you a lot!!!
Thanks for this comment! I can totally relate to all of this! We have tried speaking during the week but being tired and/or busy does not provide the best environment. I’m going to get with Maria and give this a try only on Sunday to start. Before I was trying to go all out by trying to speak every day only in Spanish and it was burning me out really fast. I totally agree with you on speaking Spanish with someone else other than Maria. I recently went to the gym with Manuel. (He was in one of our videos a couple of weeks ago) He does not speak any English so I had to use my Spanish. I was really nervous but we were able to communicate and it was a lot of fun. Thanks for the advice! It is nice to hear from someone that has been there. -Cody
@@WhyNotSpanishCody though u might be not the fastest learner videos of you and Maria are so fun to watch and very inspiring for me as a novice student of Spanish. i've seen your complaints on burning out and taking a pause and I do understand it might get exhausting. still wish you to find the courage to keep going! no habla español fluido, acabo de empezar a aprender español, por eso comento en inglés (que es la lengua extranjera para mi tambien).
Well done Cody and Maria. First of all, Cody - you are speaking so well and with lots of confidence! Maria - you're a great language teacher (I am also so I can appreciate your technique.). And hats off to both of you for "surviving" this year as a couple/ teacher - pupil. I'm looking forward to your future videos.
Wow...your pronunciation Cody is off the charts improved! I wrote yesterday on another video how much work you need, but I didn't notice the date. I apologize as I should have looked before commenting. Buen trabajo!!!
As I am watching how Cody is acquiring the language, I would like to mention that he is really making a good progress. The problem of many students of foreign languages is that they cannot realistically assess their skills. One of the reasons is a lot of ads that promise that it is a fast and easy process.
Gracias por tu video. Soy latina, pero criada hablando mucho inglés. Casi nunca hablo espanol.
Maria, Your diction is so precise that you are easy to understand. I also enjoy your happy demeanor and beautiful smile. It makes watching these videos very pleasant. I just discovered your channel about a week ago, and am going to watch every video.
I love your interaction and honesty! I smile when I watch your videos. I'm obsessed with Spanish, so I appreciate them. Thank you, both, for your perspective.
Estoy muy muy feliz con este video. Im very impressed with your advancement, Cody! Wow! Well done. I didnt realize you could speak like that! Me gusta tu definición the fluidez. En el pasado, no sabia como responder a la pregunta "Are you fluent?" Y ahora puedo decir si! Maria ha dicho!
¡Cody! ¡Hiciste bien!
Wow Cody, I'm impressed with your progress in such a short time! I've been studying Spanish for a year and a half and can't express myself as much as you can! Keep it up! Jeff
Jejejeje. ¡Felicidades, Cody!
I love you guys!! Thanks so much for both the education and amusement! Having a wife from Mexico, I can certainly relate. Please keep up the great work! Cuidanse!
You two are AWESOME!!! I am absorbing all of the content I can for a solo trip to Mexico in July! Your content is THE BEST !!!! and it FUNNY!!! 6:00 ja ja ja jaaaa
Bien hecho Cody! Creo que has mejorado mucho! Acabo de ver el vídeo viejo y se nota que te has puesto en forma y has adelgazado. Buen trabajo!
Me gustan tus videos, yo aprendo mucho and yo practico dos idiomas, espańol y ingles.Mi espańol es basico y ingles es avanzado. For me the most useful videos are the ones when Cody is trying to learn and Maria is mad with him that he can't understand even though she repeated it many times.
Felicidades! He siguiendo tu historia desde septiembre (mi cumple de español). Gracias a tí por compartiendo tu viaje. Y no te preocupes sobre tu Tennessee twang. I can't get rid of my North Carolina drawl 😂😂
Felicidades a Cody! Sigue practicando Cody! Voy a hacer lo mismo!
Cody, I applaud your efforts. I too have been studying for about a year now and yo comprender mucho, pero no hablo en Español. I went on a cruise just last week and spoke with a woman from Cuba who did not speak Ingles. I will have to try harder to actually speaking Spanish so I can think of how to respond when I have a conversation. Keep up the good work! I would love to see you have a conversation with your mother in law!
This makes me feel better; after 10+ years of lots of Spanish classes, I still have trouble out in my Mexican town understanding what is said to me and then how to respond - and yes, those programs that promise you’ll be speaking in 3 weeks are such BS!!! :-)
He's doing fantastic! I understood most of this video. It's my speaking I need work on. 👍
¡ Felicitaciones a Cody! Hahahaha! :)
Buen trabajo Cody y Maria! Side note: I always wondered if you two were “an item”, and thought that if you weren’t, you should be 😁😁 Gracias !!!!
Aww Cody’s face during the skit when you said “just tell me in English” 😭 I know that feeling
I do too haha. So funny they acted too well I felt the pain.
Thanks for being so honest, Cody! I roll my eyes at those programs that say they can have you speaking a new language in 1 day or 1 month or whatever! It takes lots of time and patience.
Right! Gracias, Lori!
¡De verdad! I'm in my first week of properly learning Spanish and it feels so difficult already.
The word “can” is a teaser. In theory, someone probably can do it if they turn their life upside-down to take on the challenge; but realistically many/most people don’t have the time (or desire, patience, energy, motivation etc).

Same here Elisa
How about now?
I’m thinking Cody is pretty smart

redhen689 thanks that is a good idea I'll get one of my sons to find the app for my phone.
Also, Bob, get Duolingo. It's very helpful and it's free. Duolingo.com
I'm really impressed with both of you! While watching this I thought "Why haven't I learned that much the last year?" until I realized that I was watching and understanding the entire thing in Spanish. Thank you so much for all the great lessons!
I go through the same thoughts. Then every now and then you have a moment when you realize how much you have learned.
Same! Now I just need the motivation to speak with a teacher everyday on italki etc..
Jordan Michael How much do you spend on italki?
Me too!!!!! Cody’s sentences are impressive and I was down on myself for not being able to make proper sentences. But I realized at the end that I understood about 80% of the video!

In linguistics 95% comprehension of native speakers is considered fluent (different from native fluecy btw).
¡Eres una gran maestra! Gracias👌🏼
Good luck Cody and I hope your Spanish improves and I can’t wait to see how awesome it is next year!
Awesome job Cody! The difference is incredible!

It takes some of the pressure off her to be your 'teacher', you will hear other expressions and 'ways of speaking' and the language won't only be about you two or your relationship (even if this is a great reason to learn a language).
Before I was
trying to go all out by trying to speak every day only in Spanish and it was burning me out really fast.
-Cody
elemy123456789 what a FANTASTIC COMMENTARY!!! Love it!
True, My girlfriend is Spanish, it doesn't make a difference
@@WhyNotSpanishCody though u might be not the fastest learner videos of you and Maria are so fun to watch and very inspiring for me as a novice student of Spanish. i've seen your complaints on burning out and taking a pause and I do understand it might get exhausting. still wish you to find the courage to keep going! no habla español fluido, acabo de empezar a aprender español, por eso comento en inglés (que es la lengua extranjera para mi tambien).
This is so true and great advice. I am in a similar situation with my boyfriend (he’s a native Spanish speaker).
Nice, Cody knows and understands a lot! I been studying over two years and am not where he is. Thanks for your honesty and compartirlo
Gracias. We are not trying to be perfect, just to be real. Mucha suerte con tu progreso tambien. - Cody.
Ustedes me hacen reír.
Muchisimas gracias a Maria y Cody! Saludos desde Chicago!
I know ASL. Trying to teach my husband was SO MUCH like this!! Absolutely love this video
¡Gracias Nina! This is just the beginning. There are a lot of things to work on! We hope you stay with us to see the process.
Best Spanish channel on RUclips! You two are lovely!
I love watching them! They make learning Spanish fun!
Wow...your pronunciation Cody is off the charts improved! I wrote yesterday on another video how much work you need, but I didn't notice the date. I apologize as I should have looked before commenting. Buen trabajo!!!
The skits are hilarious! Cheers to learning. In for the long haul...
As I am watching how Cody is acquiring the language, I would like to mention that he is really making a good progress. The problem of many students of foreign languages is that they cannot realistically assess their skills. One of the reasons is a lot of ads that promise that it is a fast and easy process.
¡Felicitaciones a ambos!
You guys work great together and put together some very helpful and funny videos! Thanks for your time and effort!
I love your interaction and honesty! I smile when I watch your videos. I'm obsessed with Spanish, so I appreciate them. Thank you, both, for your perspective.
congratulations cody! you guys are so great for each other!
Buen trabajo Cody!!! Lucha! Lucha!
Cody! You did so good!!
You guys are awesome. You've been very helpful in my journey learning Spanish. Thank you!
Yo tambien
¡Cody! ¡Hiciste bien!
Buen trabajo! Mas! Mas! Mas!
Wow Cody, I'm impressed with your progress in such a short time! I've been studying Spanish for a year and a half and can't express myself as much as you can! Keep it up!
Jeff
Este es mi esposa y yo. Pero nosotros estamos tratando. Gracias finalmente puedo escuchar algunos videos y actualmente entender. Muchas gracias
Your videos are hilarious and so helpful gracias...you deserve the Oscar....please keep making them.
¡Enhorabuena a los dos!
“It’s good.” Hahaha her face and her voice were hysterical. So relatable.
Jejejeje. ¡Felicidades, Cody!
I love you guys!! Thanks so much for both the education and amusement! Having a wife from Mexico, I can certainly relate. Please keep up the great work! Cuidanse!
Esto es exactamente que necesito. Gracias por todos tus videos.
Good effort mate. Keep it up!
¡Bien hecho! ¡Sigue así!
Good achievement Cody. Your'e a block ahead of me but im keeping up, thanks two you and Maria.
Muchas gracias . Que dios te bendigas. 💕
Felicitaciones a Cody. Bueno.
You two are AWESOME!!! I am absorbing all of the content I can for a solo trip to Mexico in July! Your content is THE BEST !!!!
and it FUNNY!!! 6:00 ja ja ja jaaaa
His Spanish is way better than last time I've watched these videos
Bien hecho Cody! Creo que has mejorado mucho! Acabo de ver el vídeo viejo y se nota que te has puesto en forma y has adelgazado. Buen trabajo! Siempre aprendo algo y obtengo mas vocabulario mientras veo tus vídeos. Gracias! Síguelo! No puedo esperar por sus vídeos siguientes!
lol I loved the "scenes". I definitely understand what it's like to be Cody! great video!!
jajaja!
Thank you for this video. It takes a lot of patience, and we all understand that struggle. Keep it up Cody
You guys are great! Way to go, BOTH of you! I LOVED this video!!
Cody is my hero!
Love the honesty- this is so encouraging for me.
Sus videos estás anudándome bastante ! Muchas gracias ❤️
*ajudandome
Me gustan tus videos, yo aprendo mucho and yo practico dos idiomas, espańol y ingles.Mi espańol es basico y ingles es avanzado. For me the most useful videos are the ones when Cody is trying to learn and Maria is mad with him that he can't understand even though she repeated it many times.
Oh, and Cody is doing fantastic for only one year! I know this video is also a year old so he undoubtedly is even better.
!Bien hecho Cody! Saludos.
I love this channel haha.
You two are so funny. Cody is a lucky dude!
Tu progreso es increíble! Felicidades! He siguiendo tu historia desde septiembre (mi cumple de español). Gracias a tí por compartiendo tu viaje. Y no te preocupes sobre tu Tennessee twang. I can't get rid of my North Carolina drawl 😂😂
María y Cody, me encantan los videos . . . son muy educativos y divertidos también.
7:30 “Por que “no”, Cody. Confiesa.”
🤣
8:48 “How’s my pronunciation?”
“It’s good, Cody.”
“How’s-“
*death glare* “It’s good.”
👌🏼👍🤣🤣🤣
Felicidades a Cody! Sigue practicando Cody! Voy a hacer lo mismo!
Me gustó mucho este video. Muy divertido.
El español de Cody hay mejorado bastante!
Bravo Cody! Gracias por este video! Aprecio vuestra franqueza in todos los videos!
congrats Cody! You're a f'n badass
He's doing fantastic! I understood most of this video. It's my speaking I need work on. 👍
Monique Marquez I'm the same I got about 95 percent of it but understanding and making yourself understood quite different
Yes, he is doing fantastically!
Very good example of how difficult it is.
que divertido es verles discutar
¡ Felicitaciones a Cody!
Hahahaha! :)
Great job Cody! I think you are doing very well. I've been taking an online Spanish class, but don't have many opportunities to practice.
Buen trabajo Cody y Maria!
Side note: I always wondered if you two were “an item”, and thought that if you weren’t, you should be 😁😁
Gracias !!!!
