Great video. The more I learn Spanish the more respect I have for foreigners who come to this country (even if they were taught English). It is so intimidating trying to speak in a foreign language to native speakers. I still haven't gotten over the hurdle to be able to speak to people when I hear them speaking Spanish. So I give you props for trying. I know the only way to get over that is to jump right in but I just haven't been able to muster the courage to do so.
Thanks! Yeah, it is really intimidating to talk with native speakers. I felt like my Spanish was way better but when you put me with a native speaker and in front of the camera my mind goes blank. It took me a while to get up the courage to talk with people on the street. After a while, I started to notice that everyone was super friendly and they were excited that I was trying to speak their language. It really gives perspective on what other foreigners go through when they are in your country. Take the jump and let us know how it goes! 🙂 - Cody
WhyNotSpanish sounds good. I actually visit Panama a couple times a year so I'll definitely try when I'm there in September. BTW if give you about a 3 as well. Lol
Hola, Sam. I work with a lot of Latinos and try to say things to them in Spanish as much as possible. It IS very nerve wracking though. I will go over and over what I am going to say and then still worry the word is wrong, my grammar is poor, the conjugation of the word is incorrect. Then is someone says something back it's usually very fast and I have no idea what that person said. :0 But I keep putting myself out there b/c I know speaking is the best way to learn.
CatLady71 I know. I just got back from Panama and tried to use some of my spanish. It didn't really go too well. I was able to get by in some situations but it seems like such a daunting task to really learn at this point. It's almost like it's impossible unless you live in a Spanish speaking country or have someone to converse with everyday. One situation I was in was trying to ask for jelly in a restaurant. I kept saying "dulce", "pan", "sobre en pan" but she just didn't understand. I also notice when. I ask for something like Corona but don't say it like a Spanish person they rarely understand. So even when I say a word they know, unless I pronounce it pretty good, they won't understand most of the time anyway. I've been "sort of studying" for almost 2 years now and I just don't feel like I've made much progress. Like I know a lot of words but just can't get over the hump to understand much of what I hear. Just gonna keep trying and see if it sticks one day. :)
I started studying on my own about a year ago. I totally understand how it can feel like you are putting so much time and effort into learning but still are having trouble speaking and can't understand most of the time. ugh...All you can do is keep practicing. Spanish people who have learned English tell me that speaking is the best way to learn. I've only recently started to say more to people at my job and everyone is very nice and helps me if I get stuck on a word. lol..Language learning is a journey for sure.
I feel very happy that you have a friendCody in your videos. He is very nice. Many people can relate to Cody because I feel nervous too! He is VERY BRAVE! Thank you Cody!
i love this because all the strangers are so kind and patient. im always nervous to talk with native speakers for fear of sounding stupid, but seeing this as a third party helps with that fear a little bit.
That is crucial when we are trying to learn. It is still very intimidating for me... Have you talked to more people in Spanish since the comment? Tardo mucho para responder! - Cody
Omg I know how you feel, I chat on fb messenger in Spanish with my friends every day, and now they are starting to suggest we actually SPEAK on microphone.. I'm quite terrified and they are my long term friends!!
Hola, Stephanie. Yo también. Soy muy nerviosa hablar con español personas. I hope at some point I won't be so nervous & sweaty when trying to get out a sentence lol.
It is intimidating to tell the "world" you're going to do something you have struggled with for a loooooooong time. Let's see how I do! Definitely people like you, cheer me up in this journey! Muchas gracias! - Cody
WhyNotSpanish it is inspirational to other English speakers like me learning a second language to see you learning and struggling like we do. It is not easy to learn even a supposedly 'easy' language, it takes a lot of hard work, discipline and dedication. I'm actually learning Portuguese rather than Spanish at this stage but I enjoy watching your videos and following along as best as I can. :) I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Cody is so right about how unnerving it is to try and talk with someone in their native language. I think that is the biggest barrier to learning. I attempted to order my Mexican meal once in Spanish and totally messed it up but I managed..What was interesting is the young Hispanic woman was just as nervous about speaking English to me and once we both realized how awkward we were in each others language we both became really relaxed about it and had a great time speaking both English and Spanish.
The best way of having dialogues with strangers is to travel solo through South America and have the total stranger sitting next to you on a long bus journey talk your ear off in spanish for 4 hours ..).
I was in Costa Rica earlier this year. Whenever we had a driver, I would sit up front and "force" the driver to engage me in Spanish. I made them repeat themselves if I didn't understand. And I constantly asked for them to correct my Spanish. It was best if they knew some English, but not too much. Yeah, I was un dolor en el culo. Yes, I tipped big.
The two of you are great together! Well played off each other. Your style and humor is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Your channel is now my go-to lesson for the day. I’ve found myself simply interested in watching for the humor and interaction. Learning fast. Will have my wife watching, as well, she’s well behind me and needs to catch up before we move south in two months.
Thank you for sharing this! I met my boyfriend from Argentina a year ago and have been living with him and his family for 6 months. I have bad social anxiety to start with so I know it can be difficult getting the courage to speak to strangers (especially in a foreign language) and can be nerve-racking. Thank you for letting me know I’m not alone out there! I think Cody should get an A+ for effort and courage!!!
You're very kind. In the most recent videos Cody doesn't show up much anymore and they're mostly in Spanish. We'll be moving to Colombia soon though and you can follow us on Instagram to see the process if you're interested. 🙂
Excellent video. It's a great teaching methodology and pedagogy. Both Cody and Maria really have their strengths in helping the viewer learn. Keep up the good work!
Cody man you are doing great. You have a great teacher just keep at it. You will make less and less mistakes until you stop making them altogether. Your videos help me a lot. Great videos. Thanks very much to both of you.
Wow! Big props to you Cody! That was not an easy test! Then compound it with being on camera and having to direct the mic? You should feel great! Well done sir!
I had a conversation with a native speaker for about 10 minutes one day. I went home gleaming in excitement, I could not believe she even understood me let alone converse with me. What a turning point that was for me. That was when I saw the light at the end of the tunnel.
Tambien.
Great video. I am going to have to watch each and everyone. I cannot wait until FRIDAY for the next new one. AWESOME. I am learning so much. Thanks to Maria, Cory, Paul and Jordan.
Hola Cody y Maria! Me llamo es Caroline! I started to learn Spanish last September in an evening class just one evening per week. (Still ongoing) as my son now lives in Pamplona with his girlfriend. Despite going to Spain almost every year on holidays, and being surrounded by Spanish students every summer since my childhood, I never learnt Spanish. Yet I love languages and I am fluent in Irish/Gaelic, and I can make my way well enough in French and German. I think your videos are fantastic. Maria, you are a fabulous teacher. You have a fantastic way of breaking things down for everyone to understand the grammar and syntax of Spanish. And Cody as I watched the video I put myself in your place and I felt I would give me a 3 also! However, even though I understood what was being said, I am not as confident as you yet, as I would struggle with nouns and verbs still. So fair play, I think you are brilliant well done Cody. Again, thank you both so much for all the videos. They help me so much during the week to understand the spoken word when I listen to the language and I find I am getting better and better at understanding Spanish. Much as gracias! (Can’t find Spanish “opening exclamation on my QWERTY keypad on iPad 🤭) Caroline xx
You know what, I’ve been learning Spanish for like 14 years and a few weeks ago I went to a Spanish bookstore and absolutely fumbled while talking to the lady at first lol, so I can understand the part that nerves play in making silly mistakes lol. I’m naturally shy, but I also got more comfortable as the conversation went on. She spoke a lot to me explaining the different books, so it was a good experience in speaking and listening. Cody did quite well here, I think the biggest thing is pronunciation, hambre instead of hombre etc
I enjoy this video. I have been studying for 9 months now and everytime I get the courage to speak to someone it's like I get so nervous I forget almost everything I've learned and it really feels like a "step-back". I feel ya cody!

I love Cody! I'm from the Southern US and have a similar accent as Cody, and I find that I make the same mistakes as Cody. I'd give him a 4.5. Great job, Cody!
I know this is a comment for Cody, but I just wanted to tell you: busca un club de conversación en donde tú vives.
Cool videos. I like the very practical experiences of meeting and talking with people in the street, and also the discussion of the mistakes afterwards. There are many different Spanish learning videos on the internet, but yours are very practical ... and that is good!
I really like the interaction between you and Cory. I wish I was there with you guys...it looks like a lot of fun to learn with Maria. Whenever I hear somebody speak spanish around here I have the urge to start a conversation but as I'm trying to find an introduction phrase, I realise that it would stop at Hola, como estas ! Congratulation Cory, you impress me.I'd give you a big 4!
This video popped up on my feed. It was fun to watch Cody trying his Spanish five years ago. Cody must be very fluent now speaking Spanish like a real Colombian.
I actually like that he was nervous because that's exactly how I would feel in his situation. I think it is encouraging to see someone else work through the nerves and push through.
Cody did pretty well. It's been three years since this video, and I'm sure his Spanish is even better now. I saw he got caught up with the word "pasatiempos", because you either know a word or you don't, but he seemed to read the context and responded appropriately. Awesome!
I will give you a 4.8 because you did great and you were bold to interview people in Spanish. I hope I can have this much courage to talk to more locals.
I know this is an old video, and that I've probably gone past this level of learning so far (I found the videos so fun I thought I'd start from the very beginning!), but that was great work Cody! I learnt German in high school and realise to this day that I still can't speak it very well, at least to others. I can read, write and speak it to myself to a reasonable level - however I never mustered the courage to speak it to others for fear of making mistakes. I then got together with my girlfriend (she is from Spain), and have made a concerted effort to learn Spanish. It is so much more fun, occasionally nervewracking and infuriating, but rewarding to be able to speak to others in their native language! I loved my visit to Spain this year where I got to actually speak basic Spanish to others (in Andalusia no one speaks English anyway), even if it is not nearly to the level of my English - would love to visit Latin America some day.
A BIG thanks to you two, it is a very genius idea and a great work, Grasias. I give you 4.5 I wish I can do like you Cody. I'm Tunisian by the way I wish I can be flue in Spanish.
Av just got to the point where I am confident enough to have basic conversations in Spanish. Just ordering food or other basic interaction with native speakers. But I find the Spanish so helpful when you are trying. Which helps with confidence. Loving learning Spanish. Loving the videos. 😎
9 - nueve 90 - noventa 900 - nove cientos 9000 - nueve mil 90000 - nove cientos mil 9000000 - nueve millones Fluctuates between nueve and nove I notice
So brave to speak to strangers. My mind goes blank and I get nervous even though I know the words. You did so well.
alcohol helps that
I know what to say but it just comes out gibberish when i actually say it to a Spaniard, luckily they are generally very patient with me.
Same happens to me!!
Exactly my problem too😂
Me too

It's not problem. Because we will want to learn english. I study my english lesson every day
Yeah, understandable. Not everbody is patient
It's great to see a video of someone actually learning and not just the perfect language of a fully proficient speaker or polyglot. Good on you! :)
It is intimidating to tell the "world" you're going to do something you have struggled with for a loooooooong time. Let's see how I do! Definitely people like you, cheer me up in this journey! Muchas gracias! - Cody

Lol, a classic case of big fears and little fears uniting for the sake of comfort. You just laugh at and with each other while enjoying the moment.
I'm still a beginner and I think Cody did extremely well. I hope I can learn as much as he has.
I love this video. It gives me hope!! I like seeing Cody screwing up as much as I do. Maria es tan Adorable!! Ella me hace sonreir!!
The best way of having dialogues with strangers is to travel solo through South America and have the total stranger sitting next to you on a long bus journey talk your ear off in spanish for 4 hours ..).
Nice, are you speaking from experience? I've had that happen to me a couple of times. - Cody
WhyNotSpanish yeah, in Bolivia. It's generally a more open culture in Latin America I find.
I was in Costa Rica earlier this year. Whenever we had a driver, I would sit up front and "force" the driver to engage me in Spanish. I made them repeat themselves if I didn't understand. Nice work bro! I'm about 3 months into my Spanish journey. I'm grateful for your videos. Thanks for putting yourself out there.
buen trabajo, cody!
As a Norwegian I was both surprised and happy to see the replica of the most famous Norwegian painting on the wall behind María and Cody:)
Jeg la merke til det også
Jeg også
Me encanta este video y me pone querer a visitar a Colombia!
( I love this video and it makes me want to visit Colombia 🇨🇴) 🙂

Will have my wife watching, as well, she’s well behind me and needs to catch up before we move south in two months.
Entertainment is the best way to deliver difficult / abstract concepts. Thanks for watching.
That was awesome Cody! The hardest hurdle you passed was speaking to people in their native language and you did it!

buen trabajo.
You are an excellent instructor. The best I have come across. If you were my teacher in school I would be fluent in Spanish eons ago.
I had a conversation with a native speaker for about 10 minutes one day. I went home gleaming in excitement, I could not believe she even understood me let alone converse with me. What a turning point that was for me. That was when I saw the light at the end of the tunnel.

Omgosh - watching this in late 2021 Cody has improved drastically! Que bien!
Great video. I am going to have to watch each and everyone. I cannot wait until FRIDAY for the next new one. AWESOME. I am learning so much. Thanks to Maria, Cory, Paul and Jordan.
13:24 Ese humbre esta baracho lol !
“That’s My version” lol !!!

I give this young man an A for effort.
Young....
¡Bien hecho!

I really loved being colombia. The people were wonderful. Good job Cody! You’re the man. Most Americans don’t even dare.
Cierto. Muchas gracias.
This is really helpful. I think it's easy to forget how scary it is making the first move in speaking in the language youre learning
Necesitamos más de Cody!
You 2 are my favorites! Cody you are so sincere and I learn so much from your mistakes and Maria's side notes!
You know what, I’ve been learning Spanish for like 14 years and a few weeks ago I went to a Spanish bookstore and absolutely fumbled while talking to the lady at first lol, so I can understand the part that nerves play in making silly mistakes lol. Cody did quite well here, I think the biggest thing is pronunciation, hambre instead of hombre etc
Muchas gracias
Well done Cody!
I enjoy this video. I have been studying for 9 months now and everytime I get the courage to speak to someone it's like I get so nervous I forget almost everything I've learned and it really feels like a "step-back". I feel ya cody!
You did so well Cody !! its so intimidating speaking to a native speaker, definately worth a 4.
Cody you are a good sport, not sure I could do videos of me learning!
this is really helpful for my learning. Thanks for putting these together!
Me encantan ustedes dos, Cody y maría,
You need to do another one of these!!!!
There's no subtitles
What a blessing! you have Maria to debrief your conversions.
This is my favorite Colombian youtubber. (also my favorite mule channel) ruclips.net/video/3YPYiBaWN2A/видео.html
Colombians have the best mule breeding and mule training programs. Some amazing videos come from Colombia. Also they speak slowly, and clearly, but I still have to listen over and over, but I"m getting close.
Big respect Cody!! You smashed it!!!!
Awesome job Cody! You’ve really improved since from the beginning videos! Tu nota es cuatro! 🤗
This is great thank you guys
Buen trabajo Cody. Eres tan valiente.
Another amazing video!! Buen trabajo.
great work........please keep up the great work ......you guys are awesome
I love Cody! I'm from the Southern US and have a similar accent as Cody, and I find that I make the same mistakes as Cody. I'd give him a 4.5. Great job, Cody!
Muy bueno, Cody. 👍 Estoy muy nervioso también 😬
Good job Cody! I speak well, but I'm speaking to no one. You're getting out there and using what you know. Proud of you man.
I know this is a comment for Cody, but I just wanted to tell you: busca un club de conversación en donde tú vives. Man when he hit cody with the que haces de pase tiempo it took me for a second too lmao (please excuse spelling)
Cody ha hecho muy bien. Entonces será su cumpleaños muy pronto. Gracias por este vídeo. Por favor, haga más vídeos como este. I will give 4.5.
Great video! I live in Nashville too!
I wish I were your student!
You are my student already every time you watch my videos! 😉 ¡Gracias por vernos Brian!
Very proud of him. I miss Spanish articles, too.
Another helpful video.
I'm super impressed! He's come a looong way in a short time
It would be great to see another one of these.
¡Prepárate! Next week it will be a year for Cody since he said he would learn Spanish! We'll make a video with the results. ¡Besos!
WhyNotSpanish ¡felicitaciones a ustedes! Espero con anticipación!
Cool videos. I like the very practical experiences of meeting and talking with people in the street, and also the discussion of the mistakes afterwards. There are many different Spanish learning videos on the internet, but yours are very practical ... and that is good!
Thanks, Ed!
Buen video.
Cody, you're my hero! I have been learning for months and I still don't talk to people. Thanks for doing this!!
I really like the interaction between you and Cory. I wish I was there with you guys...it looks like a lot of fun to learn with Maria. Whenever I hear somebody speak spanish around here I have the urge to start a conversation but as I'm trying to find an introduction phrase, I realise that it would stop at Hola, como estas ! two thumbs up for your bravery & effort.
I agree with the comments. It's hard to talk to native speakers knowing you are making mistakes. Thank you, Cody, for showing us the way!
I know this is an old video, and that I've probably gone past this level of learning so far (I found the videos so fun I thought I'd start from the very beginning!), but that was great work Cody!

I loved my visit to Spain this year where I got to actually speak basic Spanish to others (in Andalusia no one speaks English anyway), even if it is not nearly to the level of my English - would love to visit Latin America some day.
I give you a solid 5 for bravery Cody, you are doing so well and I hope when I get to Argentina I will be able to communicate with the people there.

Cody did such a great job! I learned a lot pretending I was being quizzed too!

These are really good videos
Av just got to the point where I am confident enough to have basic conversations in Spanish. Just ordering food or other basic interaction with native speakers. But I find the Spanish so helpful when you are trying. Which helps with confidence. Loving learning Spanish. Loving the videos. 😎
