The cinematography just keeps getting better. Just that first minute: blending the shots of van at ground level, in van, drone footage - it really is something to marvel at. And I'm not even talking about the effort of searching for a good vantage point, setting up the tripod, hustling back to the van, driving off/past, hustling back to collect the gear... My goodness.
I've been sat here for the first 4.5mins of this video just baffled by the amount of work it must be for all that "B-Roll", the camera angles between each action of unpacking/setting up/etc.. Blows my mind sometimes when I stop, notice, and appreciate it. lol
@@RayneDr0ps Yea having a ascending drone shot while he is driving down the road. How is that?. In the US we have "line of sight" rules, and driving and controlling a drone at the same time? Does make for a great scene.

A tip for the issue with leaving the plastic cutlery inside the ridge monkey, put a tape tab (maybe using electrical tape for a bright colour) on the plastic insert that comes out a few cm from it and doubles back on itself, that way when the ridge money is closed the tape tab will stick out and will be easily noticeable that the insert is still inside 😄
I don't mind the sponsors and would encourage you to continue with them. You will definitely make more cash and while thats not why you make YT videos, it does allow for more things like Van builds, international trips and new gear when its available and whatever other business costs you may have. Maybe for Patreon users, you upload an unlisted version of the video without the sponsored segment and potentially (if it isnt too much more work) that segment can be filled with extra video or something.

I don't mind sponsors as long as the person supporting them is authentic. I do want an honest review if you review it. Additionally, if you LOVE the brand or LOVE the gear and use it in your daily life then heck yeah, that's awesome, proudly uphold their brand, they earned it. I am also a photographer and traveler so I'm always looking to see what other people in the field are doing because I don't have that opportunity IRL. I did subscribe to one photographer's patreon because I am a huge fan. They didn't stick with it but I liked the content. Because it's more niche you can talk more about your process, style, make it personal without having to reveal it all to a full audience. When I watch your videos I am mentally taking notes on how you travel most comfortably, how you edit, your thought process for compositions, what inspires you, and to take a little trip away into the woods in the middle of my work day- living vicariously. What might get me to subscribe is if you took a trip just for patreon and shot a video of that trip and took us along, then edited the photos at the end. I know people love having their own work critiqued too. But it is a lot of work. You'd have to produce for two platforms. If you feel any burnout now, it might increase, but being paid better is nice too. I love that you love the outdoors, chasing light, and doing your own thing, because I am very similar. And you're not afraid to be real, saying "I don't want to be here" yeah, I've been there many times so it's relatable haha. Man, I love this first 4 minutes just enjoying your trip. Your content is for me is about to make and drink a coffee in the mornings while watching you. Thanks for sharing your content. I’ve never Patreon anyone but I’m looking forward to support you there. Greetings from Brazil.
Hi Thomas, the most important thing is that you make a decent living and continue to be fulfilled in what you do. I have no issue with the sponsors as they are usually relevant and the messages don't last long, I have found that being made aware of for example squarespace has been really useful. As regards Patreon I think we are all feeling our way into this new world, content providers and consumers and I do feel that if Patreon becomes common I will have to choose who to follow and it will inevitably be a finite list. Apart from all that I cannot see a circumstance where you wont be in the upper part of the upper quartile of my favourite landscape photography vloggers.... Thanks for the entertainment and inspiration.
We all know supporting your family is the utmost importance. So sponsorships don’t bother me, brand deals whatever affiliate links you name it, it’s the means to that end, and if you get to continue doing what you love for work than more power to you. RUclips is an amazing platform and I hope you stick with it. You could always try RUclips’s paid subscriber thing, can’t remember what it’s called. It allows “ fans” to help support what your doing and it keeps your attention on RUclips and not splitting your focus. Just an idea, I bet you could make a video about pretty much anything and we will watch it, lol.
That sandwich is making my mouth water! I can sympathize about the midges. We call them "no see ums" they were horrible when I went up on the mountain a couple weeks ago. Hopefully they'll all be gone when I go again! The photo was nice. Maybe when the weather is better and the bugs not so bad you can get more photos from this spot.
Hi, Found your channel when I retired just over 3 years ago having never watched or subscribed to RUclips. Only subscribe to two other photographic channels, so don't find the ads an issue. I have found your channel absolutely inspirational and a breath of fresh air. Have enjoyed your occasional vids about the more tech aspects too. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
hi Tom. I sponsored through patreon a number of channels for a year at a time each. I don't expect something for nothing and I am fortunate to have a decent job. I came across your channel a few years back and that meant a huge back catalogue of your work for me to binge on, and I have, a lot. I would fully support that route if you choose to go that way, that said Im not against the sponsor thing either. we do all have the reality of making ends meet its a fact of life and you put a considerable amount of effort into this. I pay to avoid adverts on you tube so I manage to avoid all except the square space ones in bedded in creators videos. it helps people with less dough when those who have it chip in. best of luck whichever way you go.
Fantastic as always. And I’m so glad you talk to yourself when setting up images ( see first pic ) I thought I looked like a nutter I do the same, but I thought if you’re doing it it must be ok 😂
Sponsorships don't bother me, but this is probably about the only channel I would pay to watch, and the 'behind the scenes' niche content would be a big bonus.
I don't support anyone on Patreon...yet. :) But for you, I most certainly would! I've enjoyed your content for a very long time now. I also bought your 2022 calendar and will buy the next, and the next. Every Wednesday when I see you've uploaded a new video, I know that I'm about to have a good time! Thank you for continuing to inspire me. You've really helped change how I look at photography. It's a hobby that now brings me pure, genuine happiness. Thanks to you.
A tip for forgetting about your griddle's plastic insert - see if you can wedge some string/yarn, a bit of cloth, or anything else between the plastic insert and the removable utensils. Make sure it's long enough that it sticks out from the griddle itself when all closed up. That way the next time you unpack it the odd bit of something sticking out will remind you that the insert is still inside. (Been there, done that, did not remember in time.)
Another fine evening spent with Mr. T Fuego :-) never mind the photos for this one , it’s all about getting out and enjoying the outdoors after all !! Great sound design on this one too Pal !! I say go for the patreon
Patreon only works at scale, and you would have to crank out a lot more content to create the requisite value for your supporters, which is how you make it scalable. The biggest money you’ll make will always be from sponsorships and side gigs like paid training courses etc etc.
I have no problem with the sponsorships, hate RUclips ads during anyone's videos but never stops me watching the channels I love. Unfortunately I'm never likely to be able to support channels financially. I found your channel when searching van stuff and stayed for the photography. I enjoyed working through your older videos as well. By the way, I'm in Australia (in case you wonder where your viewers live).
Always love when you've a video out, great filming and I really enjoy the whole storytelling and the photography you do and create. So never stop Tom mate, love what you do 🙌👍🏼
Thank you Thomas, this was a wonderful video, having been a native PNW’er, now in Salt Lake City…now I want to get a Delica for my adventures! Shots were stunning!!!
Stick with the sponsors. I love your videos, watch every single one all the way through. If i had to pay though I wouldnt im afraid. Like most people between sky, netflix, spotify, disney Im subscription maxed out. I would happily watch an additional ad if needed, they dont bother me.
I've gotta say. The best part of the video was you putting the lettuce after heating the sandwich. The one thing I despise the most in food is warm sandwich lettuce. Big ups! Oh, and also the photos came out amazing as well.
The opening sequence of driving through the forest, with the cutaways to the van interior, was superb. I can only marvel at the work you out into your videos. The one image was great and worth the trip alone. I don't know much about Patreon but I'll look into it if that's the route you go down.
Been watching your channel from Kansas for quite some time now. You're doing a great job. That quick clip of you watching Nick Carver was nice. I just watched that video myself the other day. I can relate to his comments he was making about his feelings of uncertainty of his work. I feel that, too, from time to time. You have even touched on that as well. I guess all creatives like ourselves question if what we are doing is fulfilling our need to express our views of the world, photographically. Keep it up, Thomas. Your photography, videos and perspective on this craft from your side of the Pond promises there is still hope for us all creatively. You should try to make a trip to Kansas sometime to see the Flint Hills. Nothing else like it anywhere. Cheers!
"It doesn't feel like 5 to 11, it feels like 9 o'clock." Welcome to Scotland, Tom! I'm having my first summer living here myself and I completely know what you mean :D I've had to hang blackout material in my bedroom window.
I have never got involved with any Patreon subs. Been here many years, don't mind the sponsored videos, does not spoil my enjoyment of your wonderful work.
100% I would gladly pay for a patron for your Chanel. If you ever do go that route I would sign up right away. Thank you for the videos and the inspiration Thomas!
As usual, loved the video, as well as the clip of Nick Carver at the beginning. You’re both so calming to watch. Personally, I’m not bothered about sponsors or ads, just do what you need to do to produce such fab content.
Loved this video per usual, Thomas. Well done. I don't mind the sponsorships on your videos Thomas. You keep its presence moderate and that ensures that the viewing experience is still great.
I’m sixty three and sort of envy you making a living doing what you do but I also realise there are pressures on you produce these videos, that’s life I’m afraid, nowt comes easy. I honestly don’t know the answer for you apart from winning the Lottery and in some weird way it gave me hope, I’m much closer to financial security and retirement than you so maybe in the not too distant future I can do what you do. That all said I absolutely devour your videos, in my opinion you’re the most straight up, no b.s. landscape photographer on RUclips so thanks for that Thomas and keep them coming.
Yours is one of a small handful of channels which I watch and I particularly look forward to your weekly videos. Have to say that I haven’t signed on to any as a patron and for some feel a little guilty given the enjoyment I get from them. I’d certainly consider it and would then have to deal with guilt about at least some of the others. My advice, do what seems best for you.
Hey Thomas, have you considered adding a tab of red duct tape to hang off the side of the plastic cutlery container? That way you see the red tab sticking out of your ridgemonkey to remind you to remove it.
Guacamole is good stuff! Love it. It makes your hair white and teeth curly, or something like that. Try mixing a little lemon juice in with the lime. And, see if you can find Cholula Hot Sauce. It has a very good flavor, but it's not as hot as other sauces. See if you can order some Hatch green chile from New Mexico. Red chile (not chili) isn't quite as hot.
I have not used Patreon or similar for any RUclips or podcast subscriptions to date. I am probably more frugal than the average person though. In all honesty, if I was to do Patreon it would be for a very small number of highly specialised channels of great interest. Your channel gets close but I probably do not learn too much new these days (been doing it poorly for 45 years). I use your exceptional channel as motivation because you are highly "Real" and likeable. Not fake! I wish you well and hope others will carry though with Patreon support for you. You deserve it.
Fantastic video tom! The cinematography is excellent! In regards to patreon it is a good way to support people, I have a patreon account myself, it could be a good way of giving your supporters extra content or giving them a say on some videos ie where to go etc.
I feel your conundrum about sponsorships. Rather than Patreon, I support several RUclips photographers (including Adam Gibbs) via memberships. Depending on the channel, members get certain perks like the opportunity for image reviews, advance looks at videos, exclusive content such as tutorials, etc. Maybe look into that as well as Patreon. But yeah, I learned from the Northrups long ago how sponsors really pay RUclipsrs' bills compared to Adsense. You gotta do what you gotta do.
Thomas- I don't personally support any YT channel via Patreon for the simple fact that I have a wife and 4 kids that need my monetary support :). Having said that, and perhaps sounding a bit hypocritical, I think that Patreon is a wonderful idea and a wonderful way for fans and followers, who are able, to support their favorite channel. I also think that being sponsored is an excellent thing, as long as it pays the bills and allows you to take care of your family. You're an excellent personality with a lot of talent, and you create outstanding content, so any compensation you receive from a sponsor is earned by your talent. Likely you actually deserve far more than you receive. So don't worry about the advertisements. We'll keep watching!
I would say that you and Ben Horne are probably the only 2 photography channels (of the nearly 30 I'm subscribed to) where I consistently watch every episode. I really like the format you guys have. I feel like I'm being invited to come along on an adventure. You talk TO your viewers about your personal experience, not AT them with some kind of tip or trick, or advice/recommendation. I want inspiration, not education. Your video and sound work is also top notch. I already send Ben $24 a year to help keep his film freezer stocked and gas tank full (well, half full nowadays) and would definitely be willing to send you some pocket change as well.
I've been following you for years, for your photography, for your love of the outdoors, and for your "story." I am a Patreon supporter of just one RUclipsr, at a low $$ level, and I feel that what he offers is worth more than what I pay, to be honest. Which is all to say that I would be among those who would be happy to support you if you decide to go Patreon. However you decide, you will continue to enjoy wide support and appreciation.
Nice work in with Nick Carver haha, I watched that yesterday and thought of Tom going through the same doubts about his work. Great to see them both being honest about their own demons. We all have them. Thanks Tom
I have been watching UTube for about 7 years and finally last year I signed up to give $10.00 each a month to pay for their channel and what they do to help their community. I don’t have a lot, but I would pitch in $10.00 a month to you because I have learned so much from you and your bloody entertaining!!!! Thanks and I enjoy this type of video from you just as I watched the van build. It doesn’t all have to be Balls to the Wall landscape photography, I’d love to see you do street photography and portraits. Throw in some Astrophotography and I’m in. Your a very interesting guy so hearing what’s on your mind is fun for me.
Thanks for the Video as always exciting and inspiring. I'm sure you take into account the risks you take when camping alone in a lonely place and you must have some strategies to keep yourself safe, protected and of course get some sleep with both eyes closed at least for a few hours. I'll be very grateful if you can do a video on that subject and any advice you can offer. I loved the way you designed your previous camper van and this one too. Many thanks for being such an inspiration to me and I'm sure for many more out there. Keep well and wish you the best in the years to come.
Love the channel and always look forward to the new releases on Wednesdays to see where you've visited. As for the sponsors, they don't bother me, it's just part of RUclips and worth it for me to access the great content you produce. As for Patreon, I don't support anyone via that platform. I do support Gregg Snell via his RUclips membership page, and find it simple enough to donate a few quid a month using this method. Hope that gives you another idea/option to explore.
But Brad, did you spot the deliberate continuity error when Thomas sits facing the sun over the lake, raises his right hand to shield his eyes and in the next shot it's his left hand?
The quality and variety of meals you manage with the ridge monkey and a single burner never ceases to amaze. Could probably make a dedicated channel just for ridge monkey cooking ! You really should have amazon affiliate links to some of the things you feature so often (outside of the camera gear)
I don't mind sponsorships that creators are inspired by and excited about. There are things I would promote whether I'm paid or not. With that in mind, you could do both the sponsorships and Patreon though I get why you'd want to shy away from promoting on the channel. Your content is great as far as the quality and such; however, one of the things I like the most is how you tend to slow down and breath and enjoy the moment while the rest of RUclips is going faster with faster cuts, click bait, buildup with no pay off, and end up with more commercials than content. That's why I think a Patreon would be ideal. You could just do your content and not have to worry about all the RUclips-isms. That's something I would support for sure. Great work!

Thanks Thomas! Great B roll - felt like I was riding shotgun with you!
Welcome to my wee part of the world,Tom.😉👍
Always enjoy watching Thomas making his Foods while camping!!
Amazing intro. Video, sound, story, light... perfect 👏
I've just noticed that your van's licence plates actually write "f/11 Heaton" 😆😆
That's cool mate
Great fan,🎖💫

Your vids just keep getting better
I have no problem with the sponsorships, hate RUclips ads during anyone's videos but never stops me watching the channels I love. Unfortunately I'm never likely to be able to support channels financially. I found your channel when searching van stuff and stayed for the photography. I enjoyed working through your older videos as well. By the way, I'm in Australia (in case you wonder where your viewers live).
Mate, 11/10 for the intro 💪🏻💪🏻 Enjoy Scotland ❤️🏴
You need the Outdoor Revolution Lumi-Mosi camping light, I have two in my van and they catch the midgies brilliantly. Another great video. Thanks.
It's Art.
I've gotta say. The best part of the video was you putting the lettuce after heating the sandwich. The one thing I despise the most in food is warm sandwich lettuce. Big ups!
Oh, and also the photos came out amazing as well.
Just some thoughts for abstract photography bucket list… the Bungle Bungles out from Broome in Australia.
The opening sequence of driving through the forest, with the cutaways to the van interior, was superb. I can only marvel at the work you out into your videos. The one image was great and worth the trip alone. I don't know much about Patreon but I'll look into it if that's the route you go down.
Great fan,🎖💫

Thomas, think you've got a scam going on. See message below.
Thank you. 👍📷😎
Lovely
100% I would gladly pay for a patron for your Chanel. If you ever do go that route I would sign up right away. Thank you for the videos and the inspiration Thomas!
As usual, loved the video, as well as the clip of Nick Carver at the beginning. You’re both so calming to watch. Personally, I’m not bothered about sponsors or ads, just do what you need to do to produce such fab content.
I like to think I learn something on every video Tom. Thanks. Enjoy Scotland!
Loved this video per usual, Thomas. Well done. I don't mind the sponsorships on your videos Thomas. You keep its presence moderate and that ensures that the viewing experience is still great.
Great cinematography intro Tom, not just a landscape photographer then!
i would absolutley support this channel
Keep your sponsorships, just make sure they are sponsors you use and recommend. Thanks for the awesome content!!
You deserve it.
am just pleased to see you get midge’s in ya van thought it was just me they followed ! 😎
It taste batter than it looks !?! Bro it looks amazing, i'de love to try those !!
New challenge for you. Do a whole 20 minute video without saying a single word. :D The intro was so nice!
Great work there Sir.... love that filter system
Thomas - get an Aeropress for your coffee. It will change your life! It makes the best, smoothest coffee I've ever had.
Wow I thought I was watching a documentary from the opening. Incredible planning and thinking behind the montage. Hats off to you sir!
Nice work in with Nick Carver haha, I watched that yesterday and thought of Tom going through the same doubts about his work. Great to see them both being honest about their own demons. We all have them. Thanks Tom
My next big thing, A filter system like you have !!!
Moments of quiet can be refreshing. I don’t mind the adds, but if your up to creating a Patreon I’m sure there are followers who would love it.
I recommend you open up all possible doors to let people support you, those that want to will walk through them.
Great job as always. I'm a big " fan" of you. You inspire me a lot. Thanks, Thomas!
That owl shirt is money!!!
What too good for a little bit of field recording? Bring a couple pencil condensers with you next time or a sony D100.
You should try France for wild camping?
Great work!
