Hello friends. I recently got this Roland SP-555 in the studio so I thought I'd start with a brief overview and highlight some of its unique features.
If you are just here for music and don't care about hearing my dumb mouth talking about dumb stuff, you can skip to 12:10 for some tunes. ;)
I hope you enjoy the content.
And if you are enjoying what I do and feel like supporting me in any way, feel free to check out one of my albums. Available on Bandcamp and other popular streaming services. Cheers.

Just found your channel. Excellent content. Very cool to see a history of all the different Roland gear.
Thanks for the insight into this Matt..!
Thanks for checking it out.
That beat was hard. If I didn’t have a 404 mk2 I’d be on the lookout for one of these.
Thanks for these vids Matt. Loving being able to come back and going to pick this up for upright bass ambient since it has phantom power. Just wish you could play the synth with pads would have been rad.
Music starts at 12:10 if that's what you prefer to skip to. If you have questions about the SP-555 or suggestions for future videos, please let me know here in the comments. As always, thanks for watching.
That's a good machine
Great overview on the 555 but! You can copy and change pads on the sp555 you’d just have to hit Del+ rec then a pad to change for example
You can copy & exchange:Copy = Hold down DEL and press Resample the display will show CPY. Exchange = Hold down DEL and press Sampling the display will show CHG and DEL and Sampling will light. Then press pad to copy to or change too.
I have a question, can you edit a pad if you don't use the loop capture?
you may know this by now but you can copy samples to the other pads By holding Del and resample at the same time i guess del is the new function button del sampling is to copy patterns
I have since figured that out. Exchange is through a similar combo.
I still appreciate the looking out though.
@@MattGreerMusic hello le sp555 est il comme le sp808?

This thing is so sick man I wish I wasn't broke
I have one, I love it but I wanna know if anyone is using with the new OS versions?
Windows or Mac?
It seems not to recognize it when plugged and there´s no updated drivers!!
So, I can´t use it as external MIDI or sound card.
Thanks in advance for any comment about it!
Good demo/tutorial. The way you explain things makes it very easy to understand for anyone with basic knowledge of music. Cool tune at the end. I'm wondering can it play a really long vocal sample along with those 4 bar loops, or is sample length limited by the number of bars in the pattern ? The main reason i went with the MC808 is that it can play 32 bar long spoken word parts...
You can trigger a sample and just let it play for as long as memory will allow regardless of the bars on the sequencer. It could run the full length of the song if you wanted it to.
thanks for that. the big problem with the MC808 is that it can't record and store loops on the fly. Might consider trading it out for 555...
This was the first synth I bought from a shop and took advantage of the return policy. I just didn't get into the workflow and also needed something that normalized and time stretched which this didn't do. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it, especially since you have experience with these SP machines.
Any SP would likely be a frustrating first synth experience. I had to fight through to end up loving mine. We'll see how it goes with this one.
Not sure you would call this a Synth. It’s more like a sampler/drum machine. It’s too bad you didn’t like it. I always looked at it like a combination of SP303/SP606.
I tend to call everything a synth, but you are right it's a sampler/drum machine. I thought it looked great too, but the features I was hoping for didn't exist on the machine, so I sent it back waiting for something better which never happened.
@@foxglove9 the elektron digitakt can time stretch and slice.
Also the404 og is sick it sounds different than the 555 but ist more limited. all in all if u resample its more bassie
Dan Lopatin of Oneohtrix Point Never uses this (or used to) on his album “Replica”.
Literally why I’m gonna one. I’m a big fan of OPN.
I did not know that. Very cool.
also Panda Bear from animal collective
Even to this day this SP sampler is still the most expensive out there on the market even though it is almost 14 years old
With the Program being so outdated how do you add sounds to the machine / bank?
I just sample them.
Hi,
Thank you for the information. Can you please tell me How we can Plus and Minus prerecorded temp speed?
Thanks.
Are you talking about time stretch?
Great machine got one few months back love it the navigation is kinda of strange if your used to the 404 but once you get it it's a monster good video and congrats !
Thanks a lot. Congrats to you as well. What's your favorite feature on it?
Do you know where I can get mine serviced? Or parts? I've been looking everywhere.my Pads are wearing out.
Sadly I do not. That's the problem with these. Hard to find parts.
Thank you for the video ! I have a question, I'm a beginner with those kind of machine. I would like to buy one to first play with (looks like so much fun) and also to add some beats to play with acoustic instruments (bass, african drums, piano, voices). Would you recommend me to get the sp555 ? Is it "easy" to use? can you put the songs recorded as mp3? Thank you for your answer :)
It's fairly easy to use but not everyone loves the workflow on SP samplers. I would recommend trying the Koala Sampler app first to see if you enjoy this kind of music making.
The 555 cannot export songs to MP3.
Ok thank you !
Another question that might sound stupid, but is it possible to put a song in the sampler and then play with ?
Would you remmand another one ?
I will try the app to see :)
Yes you can sample an entire song into a pad and then mess with it. You can also simply play a song THROUGH the sampler and mess with the effects while it plays.
If I was looking to get into the SP ecosystem, would this be a good choice over a 404? They seem a bit cheaper and being mobile doesn't bother me as I only make tunes in my studio.
Yep, this is pretty much a 404 on steroids. The Compact Flash media makes for a slightly slower processing experience but IMO all the extras more than make up for it.
@@MattGreerMusic awesome, thanks.
LOL if you haven't made your purchase yet now's the time. People are basically giving their 404s away.
Where did you get that skin for the 404???
PavelXpowers on instagram.
Can you go trought the connection Wired needed to sample external sounds?
It's just a standard RCA input. What would you be sampling from?
@@MattGreerMusic RCA Is ok for the turntable but the USB port goes trough your computer? What i mean Is : there is a way to get the loops you get in the machine and use It in a project in a daw?
I'm not sure. I've never tried to use it with a DAW. Sorry.
Try del+sampling for exchanging samples!
Oh right on. Thanks!
What do you mean exchanging samples?
Exchange means swapping the pad location of two different samples.
@@khaz8134 also del+resample to copy pad to another one!
How does this machine sampling, please explain how this machine record, trim samples
1. Press sampling button
2. Choose pad to sample to
3. Press sampling button again
4. Sample audio
5. Press sampling to stop.
@@MattGreerMusic i have One love It but i don t understand how to connect It to my computer since they stopped renewing the software help PLS!!
How do you use the Memory card It recognizes It automatically?
Well you have to format a new card for the machine but otherwise, yes. It depends on which banks you sample to as well though. The first two banks are for the onboard storage. The other banks write to the card.
@@MattGreerMusicJust plain MP3 files Will get recognized i mean It says 2 GB what if I have more than 16 samples in the card, there s a command ti switch between them and choose the Ones i Need?
So you can not trim a wave note
You can trim the start and end of any sampled sound.
This is a good machine but I don't like how this machine trim samples I wish this machine could trim samples like a workstation
Which one you prefer SP606 or SP555?
The SP-555 I think but the 606 has some unique features that I would surely miss.
@@MattGreerMusic interesting. I just picked up a 606 because I was discouraged by the lack of screen on the 404
You won't be disappointed. It's a great machine and it has some handy features that the 555 does not. For one, you can run two effects in parallel AND a master compressor AND the D-beam based filter all at the same time so it's excellent for processing mixes. In fact, I often use it as a finisher even if I made the beat on one of the others.
Secondly it also has the auto-chop feature as well as a 4 track sequencer. The screen is quite handy for dialing in your sample chops as well.
I'm surprised they aren't more sought after than they are to be honest.
@@MattGreerMusic thanks for the insight. Also I really enjoy your videos it motivates me to be in the studio more.
Glad to hear it. That's my goal.
Dude u can exchange samples
just press delete and sample
You're absolutely right. At the time of making this, I still was figuring things out but I've since learned many of the button combo functions. Thanks for the help all the same though.

This machine can not mess with the 505 & 606
It has its own pluses and minuses just like all of them.
