best plugin to have although I'm not fan of a Dehancer film grain it's a bit strong and I don't like how it's animated. I like my noise with less movement. great tut btw.

Great video tutorial on going over the tools and explaining how they effect the video. I did a iOS Dehancer video about week ago for them as well. Thanks for sharing your experience of working with real film.
Fantastic tutorial, very clear explanation. No stories about your mother in law or what ever nonsens. Straight to the point. Well done. Thank you again. Cheers Richard
Hey George, after one year I came back and have to say, this is still one of the best Guides for Dehancer I have seen so far. So well done! 👍 Please allow me one question, there is one thing I was wondering about. In the Project Settings you choose DaVinci WG and DaVinci Intermediate for Input- and Timeline Color Space. In Dehancer you set as Source DaVinci WG/Rec 709. Shouldn't it be DaVinci WG/Intermediate matching to your Project Settings?
HI and thank you🙏. I see you did not use your camera settings in the first "menu".. is there a reason and how would your CST change if you would chose the Sony setting?
I've been using Dehancer for a year and your video was really helpful. I was overwhelmed by Dehancer's website so I was just messing around with all of the settings, just seeing what each did. I was pretty happy with how my footage ended up looking, I just didn't completely understand what everything was supposed to be doing. Thank you for explaining what each of the settings actually does in a simple and easy-to-follow manner!
Welcome Lum. Thanks for subscribing. You can try using the color space settings of your camera for the input to see if you like the result you get. What timeline color space are you usually working in?
The look I created with Dehancer in this video was applied to those same shots.I just adjusted the contrast, white balance, and saturation accordingly. Let me know if you have any questions on how to go about that.
Good introduction to the plug in, but as for the result, way too heavy on the grain in my opinion... Modern Kodak doesn't look like that on a day exterior.
How do you deal with the gamma shift after exporting.. It look great on davinci software but after you export the gamma shifted, also playing it in quicktime make it washed out. What are the settings for export?
I think in my opinion this video showcases the commercial look. Not necessary the cinematic look. Everything is very bright colored like a commercial with tons of slo mo.
Yeah the slow motion doesn't help when creating a film look. "Commercial" look has changed recently. Have you noticed all the commercials with a more "cinematic" type color grade?
Using the HDR wheels along with a DaVinci Wide Gamut color space allows for more "naturalistic" adjustments. Adjusting exposure using the Global HDR wheel is more similar to adjusting the actual exposure on your camera than if you were making an adjustment with the Gain wheel. Both the HDR wheels and Color Warper will behave in this "natural" manner when working in a DaVinci Wide Gamut color space. Using the HDR wheels is just another way to go about making adjustments.
Yes. The input color space is whatever color space the footage is in. For this tutorial, this footage was in the Rec.709 color space (typical for stock footage) so that is what I used for my input settings.
@@george.colorist thanks bud, I thought that was the way to go as I've have seen sum videos where they just use cst nodes but at the end of the day whatever works again many thanks for a cracking video
Dehancer has a setting which makes it less processor intensive. So far, I haven't had issues with slow playback, lag while making adjustments, etc. You can put Dehancer on one node in the Timeline section of your node tree, making it a global adjustment, but that'll change how you'll be using Dehancer.
Dehancer is a third party plugin that you purchase separately from DaVinci Resolve. This is the link to their page. www.dehancer.com. If you decide you want to buy it, you can use my code "GEORGE" for a 10% percent discount. 👍🏼
Can someone tell me why this $400 add-on to a $300 software (or even free if you bought their cameras) is better than all the effects DR comes with?? 🤔
One of the main reasons is the large library of film stocks that it comes with. Multiply the number of negative film stocks by the number of positive film stocks that Dehancer gives you and that is the minimum amount of looks that you can get with Dehancer either as a final look or a good starting point for further adjustments. Aside from that, the film emulation workflow is laid out in an organized way and all the effects you need are right there in one node. The effects of Dehancer also work differently. Some feel they work "better" than the ones in Resolve such as the grain, bloom, and halation effects. They offer a free trial so check it out to see if it's something you'd like to incorporate into your workflow 👍🏼 $400 is a lot for a plugin so it's definitely worth it to try it out first. If you decide you want to get it, you can get a 10% discount with my affiliate code "GEORGE". Thanks for watching.
We think the $400 is the reason Dehancer doesn't show a price on their website and wants to link directly to a download for a trial version. Probably in the hope that after a number of NLE projects/editings you will not be able to easily go back to previous montages without much loss of time. It is always suspicious if the price is not available or is very difficult to find. For a plug-in compared to the very reasonable (lifetime!!!) price tag of the Studio version of DaVinci Resolve, Dehancer is extremely expensive. If it were a separate program, $400 would still be expensive.🤔 The plugin uses DaVinci and then a price comparison, apart from the features, is absolutely common. Compliments for the good and clear review btw. Very nicely and carefully done.👍🏻
Yes. Just make sure the proper conversion is being made first. Dehancer allows you to choose your camera and color space settings in the first Input tab.

I don’t find it quite as realistic as some private emulations I’ve used. I bought a 500T emulation powergrade and it’s amazing. The halation, bloom, compression, and grain are better. I like dehancer for the wide range of options and all the fine adjustments that can be made to every feature. I’ll probably Frankenstein the pros of each together on a node tree
@@OmniVisionElite Matthias Stoopman developed a powergrade with more math/accuracy than what Dehancer offers. It's no longer for sale, I was one of the 50 people who got it back in 2020. Matthias is a pro colorist and one of the guys at DeMystify Color.
I think people are getting sick of looking at the same digital footage over and over , every video is the same , im a huge fan of Wes Anderson and asteroid city looks bonkers , it’s not for everyone but I’m here for it !!
@@Tonellacam I think a lot of it is nostalgia, too. We respond to those textures and colors. The clinical nature of modern stuff looks really bad, especially in cheaper TV shows and things like that. Very fake looking. Takes me right out.
You gotta be honest man. The video, before you started editing it, is already edited. What you have to do is to show everyone from the very beginning on how to achieve this previous mood before you start editing here. Come on!!!
Where I started in the tutorial is with the original file. This Rec.709 clip is from a stock footage site and it doesn't have much of a treatment besides some contrast and saturation.

yeah its strange to me that they dont offer that like nitrate does. It wouldve been a simple thing to do

what if my footage is V log and V-Gamut should i make the input color space according to what my footage it or it's fixed for that plugin
