John Oliver: "Just go to war"
Russia: *And we took that literally*
Yup.
Yup.
Yup.
That comment did not age well 😅
Yes moron, time changes things. Your observation was not worth our time
What I love about Eurovision is that post-WWII Europe went: "Mmmh, what can we do to unite this continent and never let something like that happen again ever!" and thought "SONG CONTEST" was the best answer XD
Actually, the answer was "European Union" - which is even funnier if you think about it.
LoneHylian That was the 1990 competition. Look at the lyrics of some of the songs, they wanted peace through songs in a yearly competition with ABBA (1974) and Celine Dion (1988).
who are you even talking to? Who even mentioned America? If you thought I was american, you're mistaken.
To be fair, it did actually work somehow
Even Andy what worked is that they joined up their war industries so they wouldn’t be able to wield them against each other.
The comment about Ukraine, Russia and war in Europe was omnious on point. I think our mega reverend of Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption demonstrated his spiritual powers. Praise be

Praise Be the Mega Reverent!

I'm European and honestly it's so much fun to watch Americans find out what Eurovision is. John Oliver is obviously exaggerating in this for the sake of laughter. Same goes for that Crimean man he showed.
Eurovision should be noted as the program that birthed the epic sax guy. (2010 competition, performed by Moldova)

The Eurovision Song Contest is almost like the American presidential election, just with slightly more substance.
+Mattias Sollerman Oh come on... I don't wish any of the Eurovision competitors would just die already.
lol
As an American, let's be honest. Eurovision has a LOT more substance than our elections.

That is quite
Quite possibly the funniest thing I have ever heard
Something people need to understand...Eurovision is not American Idol or Got Talent. It's not meant to be a serious competition between countries, because the performers already have fame in their home countries. It's a festival. The popular-voted contestants from each country give the best and often most outlandish performances they can because no matter the political differences and unease between certain countries, they all share a love of music and theatrics. Each country gets their own public vote so no country gets an unfair advantage.
Dont get me wrong, even though it's 'non-political' there are still subtle (and not so subtle) acts that make commentary about historical events and people of power, like Oliver pointed out the suggestive lyrics. One winning act was Ukraine, Jamala '1944' , and it was very controversial because of what the song was about. Look it up if you want to know more.
But on the whole there is a lot of respect and friendships made at the contest. As my country down under was recently invited to join the contest - because we love waking at 5am, dressing up and partaking in drinking games while we laugh at the costumes - I believe I'm allowed to give that opinion and hope the European fans will agree.
True. It’s just that since OTI ended, ESC has been the only contest of its kind and its concept is pretty unknown to the US market
I actually don't think any of those talent things are really serious either. It's all just thrown up there for views.
Theatrics done for views is completely different from theatrics done to 'try something different/expressive'.
i think it wasnt taken seriously.
Putins Sewage hole cover. cant cover up his schittt. smh
"The popular-voted contestants" that is not correct. Each country has different ways of choosing its contestants and for some it's 100% obscure and nobody within that country has heard of the artist before their participation is announced
I just want to say Italy won this year, turned half of Europe bi in the process and I love it.

"Desolate land mass".
Do you know what like half of Russia is like? They love that shit.
WhyNotZoidberg Ukraine depends on Russia for energy so Crimea gets Russian energy indirectly. Ukraine tried to cut energy and stuff like that on Crimea but when winter came and the threat of Russian gas getting gone became real, Ukraine stopped their harassment and everything went back to normal. (energywise)
WhyNotZoidberg Saying "desolate landmass" about Crimea is crazy. It is like a warm gradenland near the sea, they even grow grapes! Fuck, my region in north is desolate landmass with its fucking permafrost, but Crimea cannot be called that way at all. Well, maybe only in case you compare it to Brazil.

Americans' disconnection to eurovision and football amazes me 😁
I mean Eurovision is a European only singing contest that's understandable since most don't know any of the performers. Plenty of people play soccer (football) here in the states it just isn't popular on a national level
+Slender Pawk It just seems weird to me. 😁 It's a country has much effect on universal scale and western culture, at least from what I see yet things what I know are quite popular in my country and many others seems irrelevant. 😁
Amane Misa That's true for any for country. I bet there is plenty of stuff is fairly exclusive to America probably even more so due to how large the US is and diverse culturally it is
+Amane Misa With basketball, football, and hockey, soccer is basically quaint. There's no physical contact and basically nothing happens for 90 minutes. I don't know how people find Americans finding soccer boring surprising. It makes perfect sense if you think about it. To Americans, Soccer is a watered-down less interesting version of hockey/basketball. And they're basically right. I don't blame anyone in America for not caring about soccer. By comparison to what we have here it just isn't interesting.
+Bad Voodoo
>With basketball, football, and hockey, soccer is basically quaint.
Then why is none of them except hockey really popular outside the US?
>There's no physical contact and basically nothing happens for 90
minutes. I don't know how people find Americans finding soccer boring
surprising.
I dont find it surprising, the avergae American has such a short attention spawn that you need to break the games down in little pieces so you can throw in commercials and hot dogs in the breaks and have someone score at least every 5 minutes. I mean it seriously, if an American would watch an entire Football game over 90 minutes do you belive he could possibly figure out which team played better without checking the score?
>I don't blame anyone in America for not caring about soccer. By comparison to what we have here it just isn't interesting.
For international standarts American football is just the worst shit, you literally sit in front of your tv for 3 hours to watch 15 minutes of play and 2 hours commercials, wtf.

It was not annexed 99% participation rate at the referendum and 98% said yes to be in Russia. Look at your voter turnout US lol
+Russian Homie - That 99% participation rate is verifiably false, and those who said yes did so knowing that there was a Russian soldier with a loaded assault rifle standing outside _every single_ polling station. I'm not for a moment going to suggest that nobody in Crimea was in favour of joining Russia, but don't you think the soldiers might have skewed the result slightly? That's all without mentioning that Russia didn't have the authority to organise a referendum in foreign territory in the first place...
Robert Faber alright man I'm from Crimea and my family voted haha there were no riffles anywhere or military scathing people as the US portrayed it this goes way deeper than your ignorant brain can wrap around. Ukraine always hated Crimea and never respected us for speaking Russian from birth. There are 2 navy bases in Crimea a Russian and Ukrainian one even before the revolution. At the time of the referendum Ukraine was going through a horrible revolution where very nationalistic Ukrainians went to the capital and protested to get rid of the president those same nationalist got very mad not only at the government but tried to pick on what everyone else has done wrong. The protestors came to Sevastopol and whoever did not speak Ukrainian to them or say they love Ukraine they would beat up and so they did that to my friend who only spoke Russian. There were military acts and a revolution but the war was happening in the east of Ukraine near the mine lands where most people don't have a higher education and do manual labor for the rest of their life or join a gang and become somewhat illegally rich. And that is where there were shootings between nationalistic Ukrainians and the gangs. There were none of that in Crimea. Crimea did not want to be a part of the mess and since no one ever even liked them they left and only then did Ukrainian started crying how they miss us.
Also John Oliver said Crimea is in the east of Ukraine but it's literally the southern region hahah
Waiting for John Oliver to do something about this years Eurovision!

Crimea has a port that doesn't have to close in the winter. That's why Putin wants it.
Really, for a port
@@adhishreetrivedy6718 absolutely
@@adhishreetrivedy6718 , it's not just "a port" - it's their main military naval base, their only direct access to the Mediterranean, and the only naval base that doesn't freeze over during the winter. "crippling"
"An anthem for annexation" - classic line. I finding that I enjoy John Oliver over Stewart and Colbert. If only he was on four nights a week as well. When he took over for Stewart, The Daily Show experienced a mighty upswing in quality and humour. At the very least, I'm glad he's got his own show now.
So many butt-hurt Russian and Russo-philes in the comments makes the video more hilarious.
Half of them are probably paid propaganda - Russia is kind of famous for astroturfing around English-speaking parts of the Internet.
***** as are Israelis.
***** Is projection an american virtue? I totally think it is at this point.
I dont understand why they should be butthurt though.. Crimea's annexation is symbolic as it is strategic.. 10 billion dollars is nothing if you consider the fact that the only base for Russia's Mediterranean fleet is there.. Also the idea that Crimea is dependent of Ukraine is wrong (it can't be used diplomatically wise), because financially Ukraine is dependent of Russia (debt wise).. How many billions of dollars did U.S spent for South East operations?? How many lives spent?? Well.. no war zone in Crimea region... Still a shit move by Russia, but U.S is not really in a position to critisize xD
M4d Alex my comrade your explanation is 100% accurate... The problem here is not the show (because they advertise themselves as comedians) the problem is the stupid people who take this show as real news source. Feb 2022. John Oliver after creating a church, becomes officially a prophet !!
Its amazing that EVERY time the word Russia was said and after and before they performed everyone booed at them and at some point they actually had to edit out the boos during the live action broadcasting!!
Neko -chan yeah that's amazing how people can have just the same opinion about something!
While I do understand that this show is a pamphlet and I actually agree with 99% of what Oliver says, that one percent remains. You shouldn't make fun of that old man. I'm from a country that had a Communist regime and yes, to that was a man reduced too at an old age. He looks like my grandfather. Well la-di-da to the West that their elderly go jogging, bike riding, take on an ordinary massage and enjoy life. Not everybody has had it this bright. These people had to work all their life for their children to have something on their tables in an abusive regime where free thought was taken and in which you lived in fear with a hoe in a hand and a shovel and a pick ax in the other. Most of the men and women like the one in the picture don't even remember how to write and read very well. Especially women. It's funny how you people babble on everywhere about political correctness and stopping racism, but when it comes to Eastern Europe you just put your hand in the sand! Sorry for my English.
I think it had more to do with the Oligarch corrupt system that had made these countries poor particularly, Russia. With the amount of money generated by Russian oil and gas revenue, the Russian people should have been able to live the type of life style of the Nordic countries. The winter Olympic was a good example of the Russian corrupt system. Kicking people off their lands with little pay to make way for hotels and resorts that was only going to use once. At the price tag of 50 billion dollars, many of the necessary infrastructure was still being built while the event was about to start. Unless the people do something about the amount of corruption in Russian politic, the one most hurt by all of this is the people.

@33kaus holokaust i had a military officer explain it to me back then, Crimea was a territory the Russians "donated" to Ukraine during the Soviet Union, its where most of their naval operations are based from. Them invading Crimea was essentialy just a way to reclaim land that they originally owned. Doesnt excuse the civilian casualties but it made sense on multiple levels.
@@jimn4315 Thats an weak excuse.
Poland also "donated" east Poland to the USSR back then, but hell would break loose if they would reclame it. The russian empire conquered it from the Ottomans.

@@FrogsterLP and then that buffer state wanted to join the EU and hand over russian military bases to the EU in the form of crimea. Its not an excuse for killing civilians but its understandable that an autocratic nation wouldnt allow itself such a disadvantage.

Gary Greca true..lol
I love how Crimea had a referendum during a crisis when people were afraid to go to the streets.... I love it how they didnt wait for stability and rushed the referendum... I love it how they lied to the face of the people of the world about the results.. I love it how its happening all over again in Donetsk and how the pro-russian separatists will consider it legitimate.. I love it how everyone thinks the missile defense shield in europe was placed there for protection againts iran, iraq, etc..I love it how everyone thinks this is about the will of the people and not about the missiles that will be on the doorstep of russia if ukraine joins eu.. Im just full of love... But most of all i love it how people think that this is not a controled crisis orchestrated in order to protect russian interests.. Its a cock fight between US and Russia, and russia is winning...
***** yawn
Is Russia actually winning? I've yet to figure out what America's goal in this conflict is. From my knowledge of history I'm 100% confident that America's true goal is not the stated goal. Beyond that i'm very confused what the actual plan is.
I'm thinking the goal might be just to destabilize Ukraine, and force Russia to invade, tying up troops and resources. While then using their invasion to justify tough sanctions. In economic warfare I don't see Russia as a big threat to the U.S. (unless they get china on board in which case the U.S. is fucked sideways).
Yes.. Russia is winning by achieving their goals.. They are saying to US: this is our region of influence, do not interfere... Up until now US was the dominant world power.. This crisis is a reminder that it might not be so one sided after all.. US didnt destabilize Ukraine, russia did.. And they intend to keep it that way as long as possible... No US interests are threatened in ukraine, only russian are.. All the US is trying to do now is try to appear active as "the worlds policeman"... even though their sanctions and those of EU are pathetic... Just shows how alone the Ukraine is... Oh and russia, has enough troops juston the border to take over all pro-russian regions... Ukraine is not iraq or Afghanistan so there might even be no opposition.. Without nato interference (which will not happen) it is pointless to fight the russians...
Are you serious? Why would US want to destabilize a country that is leaning to the west and would have eventually joined EU and NATO? i guess you are one of those conspiracy nuts that blames the US government for everything..
Liberate Vos Ex Inferis Umm..... Look I hold some believes, that I understand getting criticism for being a 'conspiracy theorist'.
But you seem to forget that the pro-european faction held little power until the country was destabilized. When Ukraine was stable it had a pro-russian government.
Once that government was removed, the pro europeans came to power.
don't go to war please don't go to war
8 years too soon
is he being purposefully ignorant as to why russia would want crimea for comedy'sake, or is he really just ignorant?
Are you gonna cry?
I'm pretty sure he's being sarcastic but I'm not sure the idiot American audience is picking it up
I think this guy knows better. Whats 5bilion for Russia ? Pocket money ? You can say. But what do they gain ? Entrance to the black sea. Something Russia and the Otoman Empira had war for years and years in the past.
Chloe Torres I see what you did there
Chloe Torres You can't think of anything clever to say about the actual content of the video, so you attack the audience. This whole situation must be very frustrating for you.
so after a month of crying and raging, the US comes to terms with Russia taking crimea by saying "pssst, take it, see i I care - it's worthless anyway"?
I think it's more of a "there's fuck-all we can do about it". That, and somehow getting the region back to Ukraine would immediately result in local rebellion. Liberation is, in no uncertain terms, not an option we have.
just for clarification, are you expecting the US to go to war again vs russia? honest question. coz at this point, the diplomacy card has already been dealt with... has obama just sat along through all of this?
sw00sher
Other than the sanctions, I don't know what government-level stuff is going on. I *do* know that open warfare with Russia would be an UNBELIEVABLY STUPID move on both our parts, so I'm hoping the answer is no.
Dash Johnson It is the only option, though. Putin may be a KGB-bred dictator with the innate likeability of a week-old turd, he isn't stupid. Sanctions by the US won't hurt Russia at all, and while sanctions by the EU would, European countries stand to lose more through them than Russia does. Declaring war really is the only thing we can do to stop Putin taking all of Ukraine for himself. Not that we would, of course, which is a pity for the people of Ukraine...
Robert Faber "We" should declare war against Russia over the Ukraine? Seriously? Any other stupid reasons we should declare war on a nuclear power?
3:02 the face summs everything up... all people were like so during that night xD
LOL Crimea depends on gas from Ukraine? You guys do know Ukraine buys all its gas from russia?
The bit from 5:10 was way over the line, John. I'm sorry, I really enjoy your show and you are usually very much on point, but this was just wrong.
I come from a former Eastern Bloc country (Czechoslovakia, now Slovakia). Men and women with that kind of look in their eyes are the ones I honour. They struggled most of their lives, some of them were put into prison. You'd learn a lot about morality and humility from them.
Yeah so what, its still a funny stereotipe, i like making fun of vietnam veterans
+Samuel Leško He's usually very much on point until it hits you personally? That's life man.
Sanchez Stubbs Yeah.. I guess you're right. I changed my mind.
+Samuel Leško Great that you changed your mind and stand by that! I'm German and I still can remember how weird I felt hearing Americans joking about Germans, based on stereotypes (no humor, nazies, etc), but you can grow beeing used to it, as long as you know it is a joke and not mean spirited.
Samuel Leško Wow that so cool man!, you do read that kind of answers in the internet, cheers!
1:37 Ukrainians inventing Tik Tok in a concert
2022 May... these were memories from the future.
Crimea also hosts the biggest Russian Navy base in that territory and Ukraine was negotiating about joining the NATO despite the NATO promising Russia not to expand into the east after the fall of the Berlin wall.
Forgot to mention these facts, huh?
there are no documents for that "promise".
Scatlan Da_Gonozal
Look up what James Baker said on the 9th February 1990
First of all, don't bring politics here. Second, Russian Federation also promised lots of things, to *most* of which it doesn't give a fuck (e.g., it were one of the countries that were meant to "protect" Ukraine's sovereignty), just like it was written on *that* coin.
Crimea was historically part of Ukraine. Warsaw Pact was dissolved on the premise that NATO would not expand. Without Warsaw pact NATO reason to exist is not there. Russia are trying to protect Ukraine from the NEO Nazi that are in power
ok... look... promises in international law are called "treaties." So, if you can cite a treaty that says the Ukraine must not be allowed to join NATO, fine. I may add that the Ukraine joining NATO is like that one awful friend everyone is stuck with, who swears that he's gonna finally start his own business as soon as all the responsible people in his life extend him large unsecured loans and the use of their garage.
That's so fucking good watching it as a German xD
Yes!
2:15 well sadly they have 😬
