I feel I should mention, as a French person who was invested in these elections, that when Marine Le Pen was talking about people coming and changing the wallpaper, she was referring to the fact that many French fear and believe that immigrants will come in and change French culture, which is of course a big thing in France, and replace it with their own. I am in no way a supporter of Marine Le Pen, I just felt I should clarify, because the worst thing about her is that she is actually terribly clever and cunning when it comes to convincing others to vote for her. Although luckily not enough for her to get elected....this time.
Les Gilets Jaunes showed us that France is still well on the left, and as the hysteria over immigrants calms down, it's hard to see Le Pen rallying a majority again, unless an equally radical person faces her in the next election.
Marc Nassif If France is still well on the left, how come Le Pen managed to win the European elections? Melenchon and other left wing parties, together, barely manage to reach double digits. I’m still surprised that 20%of the French are still willing to vote for Macron
@@samfreeman2839 My analyze : 1) The police brutalizing peaceful protesters made people realized fascists were already in power, so they switched their usual vote to the candidate with the most chance of winning against Macron, aka nationalists. It's a vote of sanction for a small election, it was meant as a message. There was also a islamic terrorist attack right before the election, it sures helped RN to overcome LREM. 2) LREM's electorate is basically people who don't want things to change. They don't care about the yellow vest movement because they're individualists who are winning in the globalization. It's mostly composed by old people, followers without real political views, or simply wealthy people. 3) A good portion of the left electorate switched their vote to the ecologists. LFI played the card of "Melenchon is our saviour and immigration is 200% nice" which doesn't really work well here, the PS still have to overcome the damage Hollande did to the party and they're doing it pathetically, and the fact far left thugs (Anti-Fa, black blocs) were aggressive during the yellow vest movement and created multiple conflicts with the police disgusted some leftists from the left culture, preferring then for this election a centrist approach represented by the ecologists, less radical.
Tour Guide this is all nice but, between high level of abstention and the ever enduring yellow jacket protests, the left barely made a dent in these elections
Well, Scotland listened when it threatened secession the first time and John begged them not to do it. And then there was John and Michael Myers telling Canadians not to vote for Stephen Harper
I work at the French Parliament a'd everytime I come and shake hand with Jean Lassale I think about the "So you think you can France" ^^ But for real, he's a really nice person :) on the other hand, Marine Le Pen hasn:t done much work... she does not even read the bills we debate on and mostly make political postures instead of arguing over the technical sides of the bills... when she's here (which is another problem...)
Has Marine Le Pen been like this since before her election loss as well? Seems to me that if she's this type of person in general, France and her people do not need a rambling, absentee leader. I may only be a Texan (doesn't seem like much, but I'm a proud one) yet these stories interest me greatly.

French is a very widely understood and fairly widely spoken language in Western Europe, especially Britain. I have no doubt that John was just reading this off the autocue, and his atrocious pronunciation does go some way in suggesting his French is far from perfect, but he'd probably be able to still speak a little even without the help of technology.
The thing about the wallpaper was badly translated, she didn't say "they're going to remove your wallpaper" but rather "they're going to change your wallpaper" which I think is a metaphor about migrants changing the political and ideological landscape of a country when they live in it.
To be honest, even the inaccurate translation said "removed", not "steal", so even with the translation it sounds like she's talking about said people redecorating your house, not running away with the wallpaper. She's still a horrible piece of garbage.
The wallpaper thing is real. I'm moving to France, and as I house hunt, I cannot BELIEVE how all the houses are extensively wallpapered. You better believe this immigrant is going to take down your wallpaper.
Pretty sure she used that as a metaphor regarding cultural change that migrants would bring. Bringing their own culture and replacing French culture with it, instead of blending in.
As I was laughing through that final skit, I was hoping French people watching would find it funny and not be offended. It warms my heart when humans across the globe can all laugh at ridiculous and idiotic people together.

Thank Christ France is still sane compared to Britain and America who are pretty much Batman villains at this point.
Marc Nassif If France is still well on the left, how come Le Pen managed to win the European elections? Melenchon and other left wing parties, together, barely manage to reach double digits. I’m still surprised that 20%of the French are still willing to vote for Macron
@@samfreeman2839
My analyze :
1) The police brutalizing peaceful protesters made people realized fascists were already in power, so they switched their usual vote to the candidate with the most chance of winning against Macron, aka nationalists.

The thing about the wallpaper was badly translated, she didn't say "they're going to remove your wallpaper" but rather "they're going to change your wallpaper"
which I think is a metaphor about migrants changing the political and ideological landscape of a country when they live in it.
@Flekk Bone Gnawer no... it's definitely not. You may not agree with it but it does make much more sense than "people stealing your wallpaper"
But that's such a weird metaphor to use still lol. That was why it sounded so off.
Well if you put it that way
To be honest, even the inaccurate translation said "removed", not "steal", so even with the translation it sounds like she's talking about said people redecorating your house, not running away with the wallpaper.
She's still a horrible piece of garbage.
Even so still a monumentally stupid metaphore to use
I just realized LePen looks like a blonde version of my French teacher which is very unsettling.
Bit of advice: RUN.
The wallpaper thing is real. I'm moving to France, and as I house hunt, I cannot BELIEVE how all the houses are extensively wallpapered. You better believe this immigrant is going to take down your wallpaper.
Nooooo not our wallpaper 😂
Why do they have so much wallpaper?!
What the woman said was "change your wallpaper" not "steal your wallpaper" his team got the translation wrong.
Pretty sure she used that as a metaphor regarding cultural change that migrants would bring. Bringing their own culture and replacing French culture with it, instead of blending in.

Funny, I was actually thinking that for a non-French speaker it wasn't bad at all. But then again I'm Italian 😅
@@lallajazz - The nailed those palatal rhotics (that guttural R sound at the back of the mouth) super well for a non-speaker. I'm wondering if maybe he knows German, since the rhotics are similar.
@@MCDexX or maybe he just studied French! 😆
John Oliver is the only good thing about a Monday.
tboss2447 I finished watching this on Monday
tboss2447
it's 12:04 western time
3:04 eastern
Why am I still awake

Blake Griffins it's Easter Monday we don't work in France this day
Last Week Tonight is one of the most important shows on TV right now, without question!
We listened. Marine Le Pen got to the second round but she lost. We were more intelligent. I'm not gonna say I'm pleased by Macron's election but I'm happy that woman wasn't put in office.
By the way, you can't smoke in restaurants like before here since 2008. This has to be done in special rooms dedicated to it.
I'm just disappointed about how he didn't really talk about Mélanchon's ideas, and just talked about the hologram thing
@@LexiLSify well he just talks about macron's wife... it was only about funny things on candidats.
I understand your dilemma. Neither Trump or Clinton were qualified to be president but I definitely didn’t want Clinton in the office.
We didn't foucked oup ;)
Ehh, we did. It could have been worse, sure, but we fucked up.
Last Jedi my ass. There's Larry Skywalker to the rescue!
That weird bear is our true hero.
Watching this 7 years later, I again realise why it is so crucial that Le Pen lost.
11:27 To be fair, she doesn't say "remove the wallpaper" but "change the wallpaper", meaning "they start making themselves at home". She's still racist as fuck, but her sentence is actually perfectly fine.
They also mistranslated other stuff but I guess its just mistakes they made
French is VERY hard to translate into english unless you speak french to begin with.
Candy breacker Cat oh that’s interesting. Why is that?
well... interpretation mostly. there is a lot of french words that can mean several diferent thing at once
for exemple:
Navet=
-beet
-bad movie
Navette=
-shuttlecraft
-escape boat
-Scolar afiliation
Dragueur=
-Seductor
-Draging boat
Prune=
-Plum
-driving fine
Amande=
-amanda
-also driving fine
femme=
-woman
-wife
also:
"preservatif" does not mean "preserver" but "condom"
"Bonheur" does not mean "erection" but "hapyness"
and finaly:
"araignée" means "spider" but it kinda sounds like "a reigner" wich roughly means "for a reign"
you get the idea. it's verry contextual.
Candy breacker Cat Why? Though. Why have so many meanings to one word?
You're not best friends with someone until you've exchanged seven thousand dollar suits. #Facts.
8:43 Coucou Benalla ;)
Finalement y a un intérêt à revoir cet épisode plus tard 😁
@@davidladjani108 Je l'ai grillé de suite aussi, même en 2020 X)
oooooh c'est mignon il protège la tête de son amant
I don't know French so I am just gonna say Yes
@@Sinstarclair there was a scandal one of macron's bodygaurd was caught on tape hitting yellow vests with a police armband and of course he's not a police officer, pretty big scandal here
As a Frenchman, this is absolute gold!
