- Here's a look at the crossbow, scope, arrows and broadheads I used on my 2024 Manitoba spring bear hunt. I'm no expert, especially on bears, but I really do like this setup!

I am not sponsored by anyone! But I do share what I like and what I don't like. And I like a good coupon code to save a few bucks as much as you do (see below). My "perfect" crossbow setup these days includes:
Killer Instinct SWAT X1 (starting 2023)
Burris Oracle X Scope (since 2022)
Dragon Claw arrows from Wyvern Creations (good outfit, been buying different gear there for years, these arrows are great in the SWAT...more on this soon!)
All of our crossbows use the following, 100% of time:
Burt Coyote Lumenoks (since 2012 or so) (save 10% on lumenok.com with coupon code BUNJIE )
Swhacker #251 3" cutting diameter crossbow broadheads (for our last 20 or 30 deer) (save 10% off select broadheads including this "perfect" model using coupon code BUNJIE2324 on their website: swhacker.com/d... )
Bunjie (The Original Bunjie, The O.B.) is my 2010 Excalibur Axiom that got me hooked on crossbow hunting. This was my "one gun" for more than a decade and Bunjie's reliability is the reason I ONLY hunt with a crossbow. After killing dozens of deer, hogs, squirrels, woodchucks, and even a bear, Bunjie is now semi-retired, but still gets out every year and even killed two deer 2023--and a woodchuck at 81 yards!
Bunjie and I have written two books: The Death by Bunjie Crossbow Method ( amzn.to/3zJbAI0 ) and The Death by Bunjie Crossbow Story ( amzn.to/2Peq4aC ), both available on Amazon.com with those links.
Check out the Gear Page on our website, deathbybunjie.com. Again, I am not sponsored by anyone! But you can see what gear I like and don't like on that site. And if you buy from Amazon.com using one of those links, Death by Bunjie receives a small referral fee and you DO NOT pay more! How cool is that?
Check out the Death by Bunjie podcast, Talking with Bunjie! It's available on deathbybunjie.com or on the podcast app of your choice.
Facebook much? deathbybunjie
Bunjie, Jr., is my daughter Genevieve's crossbow, an Excalibur Micro Suppressor 355. This crossbow was also a much appreciated gift from a Friend of Bunjie, and it changed Death by Bunjie forever by inspiring Genevieve to become a part of our story as a second-generation crossbow hunter, and it also convinced me there is a benefit to a newer, faster crossbow back in 2020 when I began the Quest for a Successor to Bunjie. Enter Bunjie III (or Bunjie '21, Bunjie 3.0, The Slick Black Cadillac of Crossbows), a 2021 Scorpyd Deathstalker 420, the result of trying various models and looking at dozens of them online for characteristics I liked. It is, in fact, a gift from a Friend of Bunjie, which goes to show how important Friends of Bunjie are to this channel and what an impact they can have. Bunjie III is a testament to modern crossbows, producing over .7 slugs of momentum and almost 140 ft-lbs of kinetic energy with stock arrows--at around 400 fps! This crossbow helped expand the Kingdom fo Bunjie by introducing me to compound crossbows and showing me they're nothing to be feared, and also helped me get my first deer on public ground. This crossbow also inspired the "Rule of 400" that I talk about from time to time: a crossbow that can shoot a 400 grain arrow at 400 feet per second is the definition of a modern crossbow--producing over .7 slugs of momentum and over 140 foot pounds of kinetic energy, the envy of the archery world.
Again, I am not sponsored by these companies. I am sponsored by Friends of Bunjie! (I'm not asking for gifts whatsoever--please don't feel like you should send me stuff! But I do appreciate the support I've received over the years! I'm just trying to express my appreciation for that.)
This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...and music, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, Yankee Militia. The albums "Live Free or Kill" and "Zombies Gotta Eat, Too!" are available on Amazon.com and elsewhere. A third album is in the works.
If you've read this far, then there is only one thing left to say:
All Hail Bunjie!

Death by Bunjie
AJ makes the best arrows on the planet! Gen's new hair style looks great
Boy those are some beautiful arrows! Can't wait to see your follow up video on them!
YES, crossbow appreciation month
I will say one thing Rich you and your daughter are the soul reason I became a crossbow fanatic. I was getting bored rifle hunting and was loosing my passion for hunting. Then one night I came by this death by bunjie channel. Two days later I am in my local sportsman’s warehouse buying a crossbow. The rest is history. Hopefully this year I will have some content on my channel. Best thing is I have my eight year old daughter hooked as well and she is sitting here watching your channel with me as I type this message. So if you ever have a hankering to hunt some farm land in central pa shoot me a message, I would be more than happy to take you guys on a hunt in my neck of pennsylvania. You guys take care and keep up the good work!!!!!!!
This is great to hear, thank you so much!
Already 😮crossbow appreciation month, hahaha.
So glad you back good hunting
As a soon to be 59 year old first time crossbow hunteri love your videos and can't wait for crossbow appreciation month!! ❤
Crossbow perfection at its finest!
Rich,
2 Great Videos and Thanks for the second video follow up of your equipment !
Your the D.A. Bradford Co. Pa , have you seen over this past weekend 2 people killed with crossbows and broadheads, I believe in Blair and Cambria Countys .
I've been Bowhunting going in to my 49th yr. and people have been saying how did the victims die so Quickly ? Sharp Broadheads !
Keep Putting Criminals Behide Bars !
Stay Safe & Healthy !
God Bless !
I have used the lumenok technology before and they work pretty well except for the ravin Crossbow, I had nothing but problems with that specific one designed for ravin. The one I found that worked the best for my Ravin crossbow was firenock
Thanks for a great video Rich. Hunting Season here in South Africa has started and all my friends are out in the bush already. I will have my chance in 3weeks, so I am living vicariously through their photos and your videos until then. 👍
That's great, good luck!
Wyvern Creations is the absolute best place to buy a crossbow from. Just ordered my 4th Tenpoint with Dave. I had to have the new TX440
I found 1 distributor online that had 10 brand-new packs of the Swhacker 251 in-stock...I can't believe it. $42 each but IDC I will take it. Wow crisis semi averted. Thanks for all your help Rich over the years, your setup and videos have helped me with Burris, arrows, broadheads, crossbows and knowledge for being prepared for hunts! Led to several successful hunts!
Sounds good, good luck!
Rich, great video and those are some awesome bolts. Thanks for sharing.
bringing stuff the works and the gear you like to use
Yes, sir, those cases are awesome💪
Best videos on RUclips 🎉🎉😊😊
Thanks 😊
Yup they are great weapons crossbows. Cant wait for crossbow appreciation month as well. Hopefully get some lives too.
Swahackers are deadly heads.
The new ones should be for both crossbow and compounds I will buy a pack or so soon see if they fit on crossbow bolts.
Many times archery things don’t sit flush and that can lead to penetrating problems depending on the power and range ect.
All in all great videos.
Great as always!
Really enjoyed your video. Already can't wait for this season!
Rich just started using C/B and went with K/I 405 fps with Eagle Claw arrows with Swhacker 2” and Lumnok’s these old eye need them. Will see what I can do this hunting season.
Sounds good good luck!
Congratulations lad
Can’t wait until next month
Fun stuff
Good job, I would like to know more about your case maybe you could a video on it
Checking in from the Black Hills, S.D. sight seeing and fishing. Great video. Getting me thru till this fall...
Good luck out there!
Great vid as always! I do miss those classic intros tho. ;) Did want to ask with all the penetration of modern crossbows and arrows, wondering if there is a benefit of broadheads that open on impact to create a large entrance and exit wounds? (and also to use up some of that energy?)
Short answers in the 400 ft per second range, I don't think so, but when you get to 450 or 500 I'm starting to think that's a big deal period I'll talk about this during crossbow appreciation month!
I would like your oppinion about the vertical mini crossbow from hickory creek. Sure it have just 325fps, but many other features hunters like. Maybe interesting for next model watch ?
They're a little underpowered for my tastes as compared to other modern crossbows but I do know people who really like them!
I would bring my excalibur mag 340. Swhacker 150 grain heads
Haha I replaced my string and cables end of last season so i need to sight my crossbow back in.
At 8:52min a cameo by one eyed archer. Bonus!
😂😂😂
Don't blink or you'll miss it lol.
Oh man, I am devastated I cant get the 251 Swhacker anymore..I have 10 packs of the blade replacements and about 25 of the 251's but wow. I dont want anything else...my Burris is dialed with this broadhead and switching after harvesting 2 turkeys, 6 deer in last 2 years, and a bear. I cant switch...Oh my goodness I dont know what I am going to do.
243 same thing, same blades! Woohoo!
Just purchased a swat x1
Sweeeeeet! Watch those strings and cables and you should be goo's to go.

Got to get some trident grease but until then I’ll have to use my scorpion venom
Looking good mister volleyball
😄
Finally!
Brown bear next maybe need that triple mount see on next one
Oh yeah!
Do you have a link to those bubble levels you use?
amzn.to/3zdlQdK
I think it's those
I haven't finished the video yet, but was I dreaming or where you talking in the past about using a smaller sized Swhacker in some other video?
Dreaming maybe? We only use the 3-inch, I think compound guys and older slower crossbows might benefit from smaller varieties though maybe
Did you ever sat the place where you hunted did you like the place as well. 😊
Manitoba, lake Manitoba area.
Do you sharpen your blades? I’ve seen some videos of people talking about sharpening new blades.
I don't sharpen them, just replace the used ones
Ok, thank you for your input. I was hoping they came plenty sharp out of the box. I have a bad habit of tearing up knife blades when I try to make them “better”. 😝
What does this whole set up cost $
The SWAT X1 is Killer Instinct's flagship model, $800 package at Wyvern Creations and with coupons last year you can get them in the low 600s from the company. That's a lot, but it's also a lot less than some other brands that's for sure. The scope is running around $800 now also I believe but there are lots of sales on those from time to time and here's the cool thing about them, if you buy a used one that has a forever warranty. You can buy one that is broken, send it to the company, and they will either fix it or give you a new one. I had to send one of mine back and they were great about it. But even buying new, 1600.00 package which is the price of a lot of crossbows these days that in my opinion do not perform as well as this setup.
Rich, you are working too much. More videos please. Hehee.
I don’t like mechanicals for bear?
I think they're fine with modern crossbows
No nothing about bears from the uk fist time I've watcted golden coloured bears cool
So are you saying all those hunters out there that can't afford the top of the line crossbows, should not bother even trying a bear hunt? R us people with lower, supposedly lower quality of a crossbows, allowed to even deer hunt now? I will admit to one thing, you sure have come a ways. But if you're happy, I wrecking that's all that matters. Maybe I'm wrong and how you have metamorphosized, hope I am, not so sure anymore. Anyways, it was a good ride. Still wish you the best. All hunters, no matter your affordability to purchase whatever you purchase. It's all about getting out there, giving it your best, and enjoying every second. Nothing brings me more happiness or peace of mind.😊
What crossbow do you use?
@@Deathbybunjie I use two. I have a Barnett and a KI. 380 and 420 respectfully.
You used to be all about crossbow hunting. Get yourself a crossbow That's able to kill a deer, and get out there and have some fun. Now you seem to be geared more towards all the top end stuff and special pricey gadgets you can purchase for upgrades. Which is fine, if that's what you're into. And you'd put out lots of other valuable information. All while presenting it all, with your special characteristic way, of presentation. Lol. And yes, I agree, that You once in awhile will throw a segment in, on lower end crossbows. Maybe I'm wrong, but like I said, you definitely seem more geared towards the high end crossbow stuff now. And seems like you've lost track of your roots a bit. But then again, maybe that's what floats your boat. It's all good, don't wish you any ill feelings. Just voiceing my opinion. Take care my friend.
No thank I’m a man
