    Really have to give it to Karak for acknowledging that his opinion on the story is subjective, point out someone else really loved it, and then just say "there ya go". Reviews in general are subjective and it's just really refreshing to see one of my favorite reviewers own that.

    For me what makes or breaks games like this are the combat mechanics and character/party building, which wasn't discussed a whole lot. I can put up with meh writing if I really enjoy creating new characters and fighting things.

    The reference to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia where Frank Reynolds (Danny Devito) was sewn into a couch was golden!

  • @Grigeral

    I'd say it's unfair to comment on the voice acting of the game, but not also refer to the actual PC characters. Sure, some of the voice acting on random NPC's isn't great, but the vast majority of the voices you do come across are phenomenal. In particular, the deities as you mentioned, but also the party themselves.
    They went with a well known group of voice actors for the party and it shows there at the very least. Plus, you know, Matt Mercer has to be one of the best voice actors around.

  • @sungmintamayo8702
    @sungmintamayo8702 6 лет назад +45

    Kind of surprising that you didn't like the voice acting as much. I totally can see what you are saying about the inconsistencies, however I felt that for me the companions and main characters really sold me well for the VO. I suppose its a quantity vs quality thing. For me, having every dialogue line voice acted was totally worth it even if it wasn't all perfect.

    • @ACGreviews
      @ACGreviews  6 лет назад +4

      well I don't find it surprising that you didn't mind the voice acting.

      Fair enough :D Thanks for the review! 1 more thing: Did you feel like the story served a sort of Witcher 3 esque skeletal structure to help you navigate the world?

    Great review. I backed both PoE1 and PoE2 so I have both games yet never managed to finish the first game. I guess I just never felt rushed to do so, but I think it would be good for me to go back and play through all of that game first and continue on into Deadfire, it sounds like giving Obsidian a little time to iron out some issues, as well as for maybe 1 or 2 of the planned expansions/dlcs to come out (whatever they are) would be good.

    There's just so much exploration it's hard to even keep track of what your main goal is. I'm just going from island to island, going through my journal trying to complete as much as possible. So I agree that the story isn't the greatest, but still a fantastic game.

      Disconnected from the world? Each characters story is grounded into the current events. Some characters stories are even almost integral to the main campaign. The characters communicate with each other during dialogue often. Yes they characters are optional and you don't have to use them but your understanding and depth of the game will suffer because of it.

    Hey, I remember reading one guy who said Mass Effect Andromeda had the best story, so I got you in the subjective sense. I'm currently playing the first one and the gameplay appeals more to me than the story, so maybe I'll like Deadfire more.

    I've been waiting with baited breath for this review..thanks a lot Karak!
    I've been waiting for this title ever since it was announced and now I'm finally installing the game. I've been waiting ever since I watched a few hours of CohhCarnage playing it on friday (he got early access to it) and I had to stop myself from watching more so I don't get spoiled. These 3 days have been a pain to wait for the release.
    Regardless..I hope the performance will be good for me because PoE1 at launch was quite rough in areas (and White March was awful in terms of framerate).
    With that said..I can't wait to dive in this game and sink dozens of hours into it.

    How were the difficulty spikes? The first one would have you get to the last boss in the dungeon who would one shot you. Then you'd have to go back, level up a few levels, then crush all enemies till a decent fight with the boss.

      There are level scaling options when you start a new game. You can scale up only or up and down for all fights or only story path. Scaling up only solves the problem of being overpowered if you do every quest and fight everything.

    I started with Deadfire (not a newbie to these games, BG2 and Icewind Dale 2 being my most played games of all time probably, love that Drow-powa!)....Anyway, Deadfire , for some reason, won't import my Pillars saves, which kinda ruined wanting to play #1 for me at the moment (when given both games at once, I kinda wanted to play the Isometric RPG with the nicest graphics and most refined combat system of any of the Infinity Engine games. Absolutely in love with this game!)
    That said, I love the classic setting of Pillars 1, but i think allowing you to Captain a vessel in Pillars 2 was fucking brilliant.

      Although the first one was very well written, I still wouldn't say the story was its strongest point. I guess that's just how it goes with all these generic hero's journey stories.
      Still to be fair, Obsidian has some top notch writers compared to the garbage that modern writers in the medium pass for plots.

    Per encounter spells should be much better than per day. Porting D&D rules directly over to a CRPG doesn't work that well. Ina tabletop RPG, players might only have one or two battles between rests, in a game like this, it could easily be dozens. That was one of the things that really annoyed me about the first PoE.

      don't you mean per day spells should be stronger than per encounter ones? I don't know D&D too well but you will usually have several encounters per day, so shouldn't per day spells be more powerful so you have to decide which encounter to use them in? Per encounter you just use all the time in encounters

    • @View619
      @View619 6 лет назад

      Using Empower as a resource for casting more powerful spells is an interesting approach to the per rest cast rules for DND. My only issue is that needing to rest occurs less often due to the change.
      The "acquire injury when bloodied" mechanic from Tyranny would have been a good fit here.

    Well I just finished this game and came back to see this ild review to compare my opinion to others. Pretty similiar. Overall I really enjoyed it but the story.. while good it just didn’t feel quite “full” enough for lack of a better word.
    I kept mentally comparing it to Divinity Original Sin 2. When I beat that game I couldn’t stop thinking about it for days. It felt like a real “whew” sort of sensation. With this it’s more like.. “oh. okay.”

    I just completed Pillars 2 and I agree with most of the points. Exploration was spot on, I hate going through large cities just to end up going district to district to do some quests, but here it was done better than in the first game. Gamplay was great and most of the characters and choices were pretty nice. Story was meh... for me and game lacked epic encounters as you see them in the first game and Baldurs'. I would you that if you like traditional RPGs, go buy it. I was convinced at the start of the game that I would go though it once again once I am done, now after playing it for 5 days straight, I am not so sure about it. Nevertheless great game.

      Good comment. Actually helped in my decision to go ahead and buy it instead of waiting fora sale down the road. Gonna fire it up in the morning and see how much I can play this holiday weekend. I really enjoyed the first one but by the end (especially the white march) I was just exhausted by trying to care about the story. Hoping the enhancements for this one allows me to better overlook any story issues.

    the AI editor is god sent! I've missed it ever since Dragon Age went for a more "hack and slash console-centric" design.
    rememberign the barebones shitty AI you had to tug along in DA2 and DA:I still makes me cry a bit

    It seems like you're putting the game on the edge of buy and wait for a sale. Where would you put this in comparison to the other isometric RPGs, like the original, Tyranny, Divinity: Original Sin, etc?

    Pretty surprising you called out the voice acting specifically as bad. There are some big-name voice actors in this, so strange to see it fall so flat in that aspect.

    I dont expect epic voice acting. A lot of the dialog will be for convenience since these games often leave you to read everything.

    This game is beautiful! Not only eye candy or honey for ear but deep food for brain! Oh its so damn well done. The mechanics of combat, multitudes of different features and all the stuff around is so well done. Everything is perfected! Complex, deep and yet simple! It is indeed the real modern times heir of Baldurs Gate & Icewind Dale legacy. Must have not only for crpg team-adventurers dungeon crawler fantasy fans. Its going to be a legend.

    I dunno why but to me these are some of the best looking games I've ever seen. The infinity engine games also hold up so well. I think it's all the hand-painted art.
