Having played for about 20-odd hours, I reached the underwater level Karak was talking about. It's gorgeous. Most of the game is, really, although the insect warrens can get a bit repetitive.
This game reminds me most of the original Soul Reaver- a mostly empty, layered world with difficult combat and few things to collect, but those few things can make a HUGE difference. After unlocking each new Hollow, you can spend at least an hour backtracking to all the areas that were gated off by that power, collecting either crafting supplies, or hidden weapon enhancements- and those can make a huge difference, especially if upgraded properly. Vulgrim actually sells an item that allows you to start regenerating health from basically the beginning of the game- not a feature that existed in either of the previous games until about 2/3s in... The progression system isn't deep, but your build and playstyle is important. There are a few minibosses, and these can also be fun. The first one you can find, Flame Warden is a being of fire-- so if you attack him with your Flame Hollow, he'll laugh at you- but once I came back with a different power set, the battle was manageable.
Seriously, the levelling up numbers don't mean look like much... but once you hit level 20+, those enemies in the first areas DO become basic trash mobs, just like in the prior games. Yeah, hard-hitting, high HP enemies still hit like a Mack truck, and doing the "evade, go into bullet-time, do the arcane counter" thing is a must for them- but once Fury can take a few hits, it's easy to eliminate all the trash, leaving her one on one with the bigger enemies- and those fights can look as spectacular as the prior games, which also had certain enemy types that'd hit hard up until endgame.
I haven't finished the game yet, but I'm guessing it may take me about 35 hours for one run- and that's because I backtrack and explore and try to map out all the shortcuts, not because I'm purposefully "grinding"- the amount of souls the game throws at you progressively increases- possibly because of the bonuses from the enhancements I'm using, but I have about 100k worth of "unopened soul jar" items.... I could probably buy my way all the way to level 50 right now (I'm in the low 40s), but I don't see the point. Just like in DSII, I re-played it before this came out, and half-way through NG+ on Apocalyptic, 60 hours of play , Death has over a million gold.... these games are not difficult to become OP, if you pay attention to the game's systems.

I learned my lesson along time ago to try things out for myself before I say no to a game. I remember watching all the bad reviews on Castlevania lords of shadow 2. I ended up playing it a couple years ago and it’s one of the best action games I’ve ever played. I even think it’s better than the first. That being said I really like the first 2 Darksiders games. My two big complaints is that they did away with the prior games visual language for climbing and so at the start I found myself trying to grab onto sections of the wall or a ledge and I couldn't because there is no wall climbing, at least not until you get that power apparently. My other big issue with the game is the checkpointing. I do not like the rogue-like element of the game where you die and lose all your money unless you can get back to where you died, and even then I am not certain you get it all back. But otherwise its as interesting a game as the others. It feels like a inbetween game in terms of size and gameplay style.

I just finished it in 27 hours on Apocalyptic difficulty and i absolutely loved it. I havent felt this stressed (in a good way) from dying and losing all of my progress and souls since god of war 4 released. The ending was redeeming for our heroine since from the very beginning we arent sure whether she is good or bad. We like her of course but her morals are somewhat unknown. SO the end fits her well. The fact that we are slapped in the face with Strife in the end leads me to believe there will be a fourth game coming for us. The difficulty was beautiful and the progression feel of leveling up and upgrading your enchants and weapons was spot on. Im a huge Darksiders fan and i have replayed the last 2 games 4+ times each. I highly recommend if for any hack and slash fan or just someone who want to feel challanged by the difficulty.

Level design is more sophisticated than you're giving it credit for. Also, the platforming issues you had, I don't know if that's really an issue for most players. Especially once you get the flame hollow. Also, the metroidvania inspired design makes exploration key to victory as you'll spend most of your time exploring finding objects that will help you upgrade your weapons.
One of the best parts of this series, that a lot of reviewers seem to be having trouble with, is its flexibility in gameplay design. Each game has a different horseman that plays a different way. Then the devs choose a gameplay style to match that horseman. Honestly, if Darksiders 4 is a Vanquish style third person shooter, that would be the ideal choice.

For me the most important aspect of a Darksiders (II) sequel is the story and whether or not that warrants another sequel. The end of the first Darksiders promises more to come after this one and I really want to see the conclusion to the overall story.
As someone who owns the regular and Warmastered/Deathinitive editions on several systems as well as the novel by Ari Marmell, I will definitely buy this game very soon but I would've loved to learn more about how well the story is realized from this video. Although some of it is hinted at/implied by the "fanservice" and "voice acting" remarks, I think it could've been a bit more clear.
Other than that great video. What I really love about this series (Buy, Wait for Sale, Rent, Never Touch?) is that these videos always feel like they're coming from a 99.999% neutral position without any biases, which is extremely professional! Keep 'em coming!

Watching a documentary on Gunfire games also helped me tempered my expectations as it might be Ex Vigil employees but there are many new ones also and previous key people are not here anymore. More impressed by what they present right now with the budget and deadline they were given pretty sure many things were left behind in the idea or cutting department. I wish this game gets a boost in the budget for the next game but that is a very slim hope but this should be a Title for THQ Nordic as it can possible help them push into AAA gaming scene but even they need to invest money in the game get more than great return.

As much as i love darksiders 1 and 2, so far 3 has been great. I had combat gripes tell i found out they are there. With that being said i feel like a lot of people are putting 1 and 2,.*especially 2* on a pedestal. 2 was and is an extremely flawed and underdeveloped game. The second half was extremely rushed. The combat is choppy and not nearly as fluid as 3. Part 1 was also choppy..puzzles...when were the puzzles in darksiders hard? I also feel the puzzles in 3 feel wayy more organic. Expropriation in DS1 was nonexistent and had no rpg elements. DS2 whole thing was the opposite. And so in DS3 they clearly were going for a mix of DS1 and dark souls1, metroidvania. With combat being the most challenging its ever been. All 4 games are supposed to be different. Seems most people just wanted a DS 2.1 remake. :/ that always been a curse with 3rd installments. By that point the fanbase has no idea what they want. And totally disregards the whole idea behind the 3rd game. Replaced with nostalgia goggles.

This is totally detrimental to the image of the game as we see it. As the game turn out, now everybody gonna called it dark souls rip off, which isn't true at all.
Even so called a "fan" like Jim Sterling brutalized the game as "dark souls rip off" & complaining about no loot system like Darksiders II. Such a complete ignorance could definitely ruin this game sales for an already such a niche title.

Thats my annoyance though, alot of people are coming at this like it's a surprise. At this point everyone who's intrested in these games should know what they are getting into. What hurts games, not just this one in general is the fact that peoples imaginations and *for lack of a better word* fanfic get in the way of appreciating whats there. It's a disservice to the work done. Especially for a series that was so close to not existing. All 3 games are flawed on so many levels. But we love these games becouse of the charm and love put into them, yet becouse game 3 is not like game 2 it gets hate even though we know damn well the games a are gonna be different. Nice to come across a reviewer with morals and shows they work hard with their reviews, earned yourself a subscriber. I am still planning on buying this game though haven't decided if I want to wait and buy it for PS4 or get it now for PC. The last two I got for PS3. Though if I get a PS4 eventually I will need at least a few games for it to justify it so idk yet.
But I am glad they kept going with the series after being bought up by a different company. Sucks it's not as polished as it could be but hey. I really liked the story and this one looks interesting. Also can't wait for a 4 as well.

I was worried for a moment that we wouldn't get to see this game, but I am happy to know its out. I played Darksiders 2 first and didnt know what I was getting into, but I liked the art style, the puzzles and combat; it felt to me like a mix of Diablo meets Zelda in terms of game-play.

Pre-ordered this game for XBox One, spent all day playing it and I am absolutely loving it. More of that great Darksiders story, a fun new character to play as, no microtransations, no loot boxes, no *yawn* multiplayer :) all that get's a thumbs up 👍 from Me

This was honestly 99% accurate, as a pretty diehard darksiders fan I can't really find any points to downright disagree on, the only thing I would say is that thq and thq Nordic went out of their way in each game to drastically change the gameplay to mirror sections of specific genres
Ds1: legend of Zelda style dungeon crawler/open world
Ds2: open world (by most definitions of the time) rpg
Ds3: souls games style dungeon crawler
Ds4: by the looks of it, it will be a mix between diablo style movement and worlds, and a combat system that still feels like darksiders

I didn't realise the game was out or close to release already.
A pleasant return of a classic series I would say. The stylised art style is still as cool as ever. Great to see Darksiders back :)
I'll be picking this up at some point.

that whip attacks are just too short & slow imo. Basically the same as using a heavy sword. Compare to CLOS series where the whip weapon attacks has the longest melee range & AoE attacks aside from sword & gauntlets. I guess Death still the fastest & most powerful ones.
