- According to scientist and author Paul Dolan, the traditional idea of what makes us happy - money, marriage and kids - is a myth. He says we should all find our own path to happiness. What do you think?
We think all good things come in fives - see our Five things about... playlist 👉 • FIVE THINGS ABOUT...

Balance is everything in life. And by balance i don't mean 50:50. I mean "just enough" of everything
Contentment is great gain. Chasing happiness likely to make us unhappy. Gratitude is a must.
Chasing happiness is one thing but telling people that not having a family is ok is another. Watch depression rates rocket when all the childless people grow old and have no one in their life.
Nothing and all things assembled will make you happy unless you're already happy with what you have it's something we call contentment.
The late actress and songstress, Pearl Bailey, said...
*_"I've been poor and happy, and I've been rich and happy. Rich and happy is best."_*
*_R_* 😎
Thanks for this video! I couldn't agree more!
No music please
Where there's happiness, there's sadness. Because opposites are everywhere, and it's all a matter of balance. We learn about a balanced diet since childhood at school, likewise the same applies to life - a balance of all leads to a happy life. :)
i looove this video! thanks
As usual wonderful! BBC, thanks
Another Common Purpose video by the BBC .
a very interesting video.. thanks...
You can tell this guy knows a thing or two about happiness. You can see it in his face.
Lol he's seen it all
HAPPINESS is not a destination it is a way.....
Being alone makes me happy.
Really?
No it doesn't.
@@sh-hg4eg that is you and that is ohk, but I like some others are happiest when alone.
@@taureansun1501 good luck with that when you've spent your old age with no one and end up lying in a care home with no visitors until you die. Sounds like a nice life.
@@sh-hg4eg you seem not to understand that not everyone is like you. I don't hate being around people I just happen to find being alone peaceful and nice. I have a family and many friends and I love them but I am at my happiest when I am alone it's just that simple.
Happiness is just a state of mind. We can find happiness our job as well as in our conversation. It is upto you how you find it.
" getting married can make some people happy some of the time, bit not all of the people all of the time." Wow, that's very deep and insightful
😂
This channel helped me a lot nowadays I am making my reports on international affairs I wish I could become a part of BBC
You are wonderful as usual.. Thanks so much.
BBC shaped ideology, every single video and each moment of it I behold with keen attention....
Imagine buying your "ideology" from a government propaganda arm.
👍
Oh my God. I couldn't disagree more... Lol
"Be Equanimous" at any given point of time.
Your presentation and delivery is so good. And obviously the radical content and ideas too. I wish you get a lot more viewers in 2021
Thank you so much for the positive feedback 😊
So we should aspire to be like Bridget Jones (the 1st movie, not the sequels)
Was about to watch this but watched BBC's "How to Smash Distractions" vid
😍
We know this.
So basically what makes us happy or sad this is actually myth. It's upto us that what we want to choose.
Don't agree with 1 3.4. And 5.
2 I buy it
I think being happy and grateful doesn't come on it's own. It comes from our willingness to learn from the past.
BBC Ideas make me happy and it's not a myth

Expected little more..
So much truth in such a short video. Loved that ❤🔥
Excellent - so happy to hear you enjoyed it!
He talks of the love Islam recommends: companionship. Marriage.
Of 9 year old girls right...
With more than 1 wife right
only 10-15 percent what the guy said is true
Prof Dolan, if you can take care of your posture, less slouch, and get rid of the scholar's neck will make me happy. --- with LOVE from Indian Prof.
Being married and having children is amazing. It's meant to be hard, it will make you better person. I hate the BBC.
It's literally the purpose of life. It's no coincidence that depression rates are higher in elderly people with no family or offspring. Literally spending the last years of your life alone... Terrible advice.
@@sh-hg4eg @3DSgeek - I see your point, but why "hate the BBC" or label it a "terrible advice"? They don't tell you not to have children, they tell you children as such are no guarantee for happiness. They tell you to think before you decide to have children - and when I (mothering four of my own kids) look around, I think a lot of people should think it over twice. There are so many children who are not directly abused or neglected, but silently ignored by their parents. Provided with food and clothes, but no meaningful relationship. It's really saddening.
And then there are people like hermits who consciously choose a life alone. I don't think they are doomed to depression as they get old.
I believe having a family is a tremendous adventure, and as 3SDgeek said: " It's meant to be hard, it will make you better person.". But I also believe that there are many other ways to grow, and many other adventures in life.
It's literally the purpose of vermin.
I don't want baby in my life cos I do know How frustrated I can be I have sister Whose health is not good at dou to her babies
You can enjoy your happiness if you have no children, but it ends earlier than others' .
F this
I disagree with this video.
All based off of opinions, not facts.

Perheps the very idea of happiness is flawed or an inborn error in us . As sophenhour once put it : There is only one inborn error, and that is the notion that we exist in order to be happy... ... For at every step, in things great and small, we are bound to experience that the world and life are certainly not arranged for the purpose of maintaining a happy existence. In other word , whatever happens in life must be accepted without any conditions , it is the summon bonoum of highest living
👍👍
The idea that your life revolves around chasing a single emotion is flawed, yes. The BBC are pushing very shallow and harmful ideas here.
I don't think I agree... we all want to be satisfied or fulfilled; a kind of happiness. Happiness branches all over the place in life with many varieties.
Having a family is the only way to true happiness.
For some people - yes, for sure. But not for everyone. Think of monks or even hermits. But then, it dependens on how you define "family". For monks, everyone is "a brother" or "a sister", and hermits will call God their father...

This video is awful.
@@henryhunter1773 yep same old propaganda
