To be clear, I agree with the assertion that IQ tests do not measure intelligence. However, this video is garbage with regard to explaining with empirical evidence precisely why or how. Rather than giving hard evidence, of how IQ tests do not measure intelligence accurately, they give us a history lesson. The ONLY thing they remotely touch on about *the modern state of the situation* , is that, if you practice the tests, you get a higher IQ, indicating IQ to be merely a measurement of education, rather than intelligence.
It would be better, to bring up actual modern IQ tests, and show specifically where they fail to measure intelligence.

When being assessed for autism, I had to take an IQ test. The questions centered a lot around pattern recognition, verbal skills, and older math skills (some of which I had forgotten, having been graduated for many years from primary school). However, I noticed a stark lack of testing surrounding creativity or adaptability. To be fair, I am not entirely sure when exactly the IQ test ended and when the rest of the screening began, so it is possible that there are tests that I may have conflated. Still, there is nothing that I say could be used to reasonable gauge an extensive profile of what a person's full intellectual capabilities would realistically look like. I am currently majoring in experimental psychology, and ever since high school, I really admired the theories of Robert Sternberg and Howard Gardner, since they offer a far more nuanced perspective on intelligence. Unfortunately with IQ, there are multiple other problems which arise as well. Not only in measuring IQ but in the application.
People from different socioeconomic backgrounds or with certain neurological limitations might not be best accurately reflected by an IQ test in comparison to people who come from more privileged backgrounds. But even more individual circumstances could potentially influence the results. When I had my assessment, for example, it was a couple of days after the spring forward in DST, and I was still adapting to a new circadian rhythm. It is possible that I may have performed differently had I taken the test in ST, though I do not even know what my results even were, seeing that I declined to receive them for ethical reasons. Personally, I think it harms a person to know their IQ score, even if they are skeptical of the method.
However, aside from the mere measurement of IQ, there is the question of whether or not it *should* be measured. Intellectual and developmental disabilities can be identified without the implementation of IQ. Even if by a similar standardized method, the process of attempting to quantify intelligence into a single number has inevitably led to societies such as MENSA developing exclusive memberships for people who meet thresholds above a certain number. It creates a potential issue where some people in a society are deemed more competent, truly "more intelligent", or more "worthy" than others. Some people will use the concept of, "well you can still be good at other things" to dismiss a person as "stupid" if they score lower in an IQ test, which is toxic and harmful. Yes, they can most certainly be good at other things, but that does not mean that said person does not possess intellectual gifts as well.
That said, I appreciate this video. I think it is important to recognize the roots of IQ as something completely independent from intelligence altogether. Sadly, it has become so ingrained into society as being synonymous with intelligence that people use the two interchangeably.

YUP, that's literally every IQ i've seen out there. If you had mad spatial abilities with pattern recognition skills, you will likely perform highly. Whereas if you don't, well.. ya. hence why i DO NOT AGREE with the iq tests that are currently out there. It only serves to the spatial pattern individuals. But of those whom do score high on so called test.. perhaps they're retarded in other areas. Maybe they're not artistic, or they can't handle music ect. • @vidurkapur1

Interesting video. Many intelligence experts would disagree with some of the views promulgated, though. IQ tests are good at measuring what we generally define as ‘intelligence’: there aren’t multiple intelligences, and different cognitive abilities all correlate with each other. People who do well at verbal reasoning will tend to do well at spatial reasoning, for example. And those same people will tend to perform better at elementary cognitive tasks (ECTs): tests of processing speed, reaction time and inspection time.
In other words, a single, general factor of intelligence (g) underlies performance in different cognitive domains. IQ isn’t a perfect measure of g, but it is the best measure we have. And general intelligence has been linked to numerous desirable outcomes: it’s the best predictor of job performance and occupational status/prestige, a very good predictor of educational achievement, and a good predictor of health and longevity. It’s also a mild predictor of income. And general intelligence predicts desirable life outcomes even at the very top of the intelligence distribution, as shown in the Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth, for instance.
