if you're ever looking for new headphones in the future, the aune ar5000 or hifiman edition xs are both absurdly good for $300. both of them sound way better than these (although hifiman is known to not have the best build quality and QC)
Can fully second you on the DT770s. Had my pair so far for a little over 2 years and absolutely love them, besides from needing to replace the earpads as they started to peel apart
Yeah the metal is great on these but that just makes the plastic points being weaker all the worse, I had Hi-X55s (Weird sound signature, I hope the X65s are better) and for me, the sliding plastic part for adjusting size did just kinda completely fall apart on me. The earpads were also worse for wear, but I think that's the high humidity area I lived in.
Beyerdynamic really has spoiled my expectations for build quality. $130 for refurbished DT 770s and they're still built ten times better than competing headphones like the HD 560s, HD 6XX, or AKG K371s. And they're still made in Germany instead of China or Romania. I prefer my HD 6XXs for music and because they're the only other headphone I own besides my Bose QC 35 IIs that have adequate internal clearance for my freakish left ear, but DT 770s will always be my "desert island" headphone because of how durable and versatile they are.
Gosh, I love Austrian Audio so much, amazing microphones, and I'm like 90% of the way to getting their headphones too. As for the Shure 215s, I definitely recommend those as well, I've spent days and nights listening to things on almost 0 volume out of my devices, and they're narrow enough to fall asleep with them in my ears
I still use the SE215, but only with an Equalizer. The base is too strong and the highs not loud enough. For using then wirelessly I have the RMCE-BT2 and I wish I could change the battery or even have the choice for nice TWS-like BT-adapters with LE-audio support.
The coily cable is actually fantastic in event production - being able to stand up and move at front of house while still being on-comms or able to hear monitors is huge.
Another vote for the Austrian Audio here. Got one a few years back and haven't looked back for games and music at home. Also they drive like a champ from even my mobile phone without the need for an extra amp / dac. Austrian Audio is very much under the radar on many headphones channels and are left out in many lists and comparisons. I think because it's a small brand without a big marketing budget to send out free or test samples to hundreds of youtubers. Great that you give them some exposure. This kind of 'actual use' testimony is worth a lot more than a dozen generic first impressions.
Thank you so much for this episode. I am a currently a resident in a skilled nursing setting and keeping the noise at bay is a constant struggle. Presently using some cheepo ANC phones and it does well with background levels, but when the roomie decides to blast me out im beat. A couple of the products are actually in my price range and I will definitely give them a go. Hope I will be sleeping again uninterrupted. Cheers from a grateful Yank 🍺
I am actively wearing these headphones, and my biggest gripe is the durability. I normally wouldn't mind, but it's impossible to repair due to Austrian Audio not providing the ability to. My earpads are already tearing on the inside after 5 months...
Ive been recommending five basic types of headgear by situation and environment in the city: pocketable audio (usually earbuds) for light carry commuting, open back wired for static position apartment media consumption, closed back wireless for workplace/productivity and if traveling with something bigger than a laptop bag, sleeping earplugs/earmuffs, and straight up cheap hearing protection earmuffs to use with earbuds outside (ANC sometimes aint good enough for walking by nyc construction) Closed back overear wired is always a weird consideration vs anc wireless overears
I wish I were a rich man, to test all the headphones. I've had 2 pairs of Samson SR850's and they've both died from the same issue. The left sides die very quickly. I tried fixing them and because I have no friends and zero knowledge...I repaired them...but both sides now have stereo...so the right and left come out of both sides. Yup, I'm an idiot.
IEMs are a good cheap substitute for headphones, you can pay as little as 20 bucks and get some really good audio equipment in return I'm still using my salnotes zero from 2 years back and it's still great!
I’ve never had SR850s outright die on me. It’s always been me physically damaging either the ears or the cord by doing something stupid, same as any other headphones I’ve bought.
That happened to me doing the 3.5 jack mod on a MDR V6. I think I just flipped a pole around and had to resolder it the right way around. Otherwise, enjoy the free crosstalk effect lol
Look into getting yourself a pair of fiio jadeaudio jt1s, they sound great, are quite affordable and fiio is a solid brand with great customer service, good QC and great reputation.
Me watching this with my AirPods 2nd Gen that both of their batteries have died and for them to stay on, I have connected them with wires to their case. I am not getting new ones until this ones explode or something!
@@Zatchillac I have them, for the price they sound awesome, the ANC although not the best, really helps out in blocking out engine noise when I ride the bus 💙
As an Austrian I have heard of Austrian Audio before, but never cared to research who they are and what they are about. Seeing this now all of a sudden really makes me happy, as so many productions and companies have moved away over the years for the exact reason of cost, even here in my hometown… This just gave me some hope and I really wish more people were like you and actually cared about where their stuff actually comes from. Thanks again for another great video!
I love the sound of the Hi-X65, but the hinges are both held together by tape on mine after two years of use, that plastic casing around them is just kinda brittle :/
Funny enough, my favorite pair of in-ear buds that I've ever owned were a recommendation from this very channel! KBears, I forget which model sadly, but they were like, a few bucks, came in their own little egg bag, and they work amazingly~!
Thanks to your original patreon video on the X65s I bought them for video editing, music composing, and listening in general. And while the boa constrictor cable can be a hazard and in hot weather my cheeks sweat mad, I do adore them. They are easily the best headphones I own and they always blow my mind. When I get the chance I will buy a mic off Austrian Audio thanks to you!
Strange to think im listening to that drum audio from AKG to AKG as a few videos ago when some other headphones i had went bust i got the K52s and they're great so far and for extra convenience they just so happened to use the same earcup size i was using on my other headphones so its just a straight upgrade. Ive been using my Sennheiser HD58x's for like 2 years since you recommended them and man are they the best headphones I have used for the price. They're like $200 which is a really good price for good audio, they're very durable, and they're fairly comfortable, although they squeeze your head a lot if you don't like that. I love them, they're only 150 Ohms too, which is nice because most phones and other things you plug them into will still make them sound pretty good, but with a good setup they sound amazing. For all of you out there who want great audio for a reasonable price, I can't recommend those enough. They sound almost exactly like the Sennheiser HD600s that he uses in the videos except for a tiny little bit more bass.
i've actually built my own pair of "ultra phones" and i can tell you that adding a removable cable is very difficult because there is not enough space for the connector. there's actually two layers of foam in there and like an inner plastic cup and an outer plastic cup and the cable has to snake around it all. i can totally see why they didn't bother
I love the fact that he threw in ear monitors into the mix! I've been using the same in ear monitors (Shure SE425) for years and I love them. They can work great as just normal ear buds when the air pods die, or for mixing audio! Anyway all that to say great vid!
I ended up getting a few different pairs of iem because of this channel, and have landed on tin T2 as my out in the wild, stuff them in my pocket, wear them with a toque things. Because the sound making part is little and I like that and they're fairly affordable without feeling cheap. And I'm sure whatever halfway decent headphones I end up getting for sitting comfy at home music times will be something mentioned on this channel. So it's cool to learn about company making stuff that isn't crap at not entirely wild prices.
@@Drek492 I got 19 years out of a pair of headphones that cost around $1k today (but I bought them in the country of manufacture so about $370). Also have a pair of MDRV700's that I still use daily, they're over 20 years old now as well.
If you use headphones daily, and I mean DAILY for HOURS, some stuff can start to fall apart already. Just think about shoes. Or shirts. Or brush heads for electric toothbrushes (please change them more frequently than every 3 years though).
@@Metaldad87 Not really, a device that lasts 6 years is what I'd call a scam. I've been using the same iphone for about 6 years, and in general I expect a computer to be useful for 10 years (I'm writing this on a laptop from 2014).
its awesome how when the headphones are really close in quailty, my ears dont need to adjust but when theyre different, it takes me a second to like adjust to the quality every time it switches
I'm rocking the SE215! It's trashed by some in the audiophile forums which isn't totally wrong in terms of sound quality, but the others who understands the true purpose of these will recognize the durability, seal and comfort of them. Rocking them at work 5 hours a day. When you're on a noisy environment, trust me sound quality matters way less than noise isolation.
I never got into the super expensive AKG stuff, but I've been rocking a set of K712 Pros of years now, and I absolutely adore them! Real Dankpods fans remember how often the K712 Pros used to show up during the 2020-2021 videos! What a great, affordable (specifically when purchased used) set of cans.
man this video reminds me of my great purchase from temu: the kz edx. i swear i love the "big" headphones but once i tryed those iem i can't stop listening to them. i pick those ones out of all the others, i frikin love them! as for those ones, they have too much top ends (i mean i'm listening from my pc speaker but still), so i prefer the classic "senn senn" 600. again, thank you for making me discover the kz brand, i love them
I don't have any of Austrian Audio's Hi-X's, but I do have a headset they made called the PG16. In comparison to their Hi-X15, it sounds basically the same as those with the added benefit of having a mic, and many people say that for the money of the Hi-X15s, it's a bargain for professional listening. Granted they aren't openbacks, but the soundstage is really nice and wide, I swear I can hear every detail. There's no mic mute button, but the mic mutes when you rotate the base up, which is a smart and convenient design. It even comes with an audio splitter to separate the headphone and mic plugs. The design is not outlandish either since they stuck with a chassis that works with their then-top-end critical listening drivers. It just has simple red accents to show off a little and that's all that's needed. No LED or RGB lighting at all, and I like it that way.
I wanna say thank you wade, you got me into budget audiophile headphones, i had a pair of supelux hd681 and after those broke i got a set of kz zsn pros, and ive brought a bluetooth calble and i love them, many thanks for getting me into headphones

I actually got the Austrian Audios right after your video, and believe me.. I am BLOWN away compared to my m50x's. I LOVE them. Just came back to say thanks a ton for the reviews on these guys!
Can definitely recommend the Shure 215s, I bought some back in like 2014 before I really knew anything about pro audio on a recommendation from a friend of mine in highschool. They have lasted me TO THIS DAY where I still carry them with me on the road for my job in live tv broadcast. And they still sound as good as the day I bought them. Highly recommend!
I am a person who loves the coil-y cables. I like to be able to move about my office area without the hassle of the cable bunching up by my feet when I'm sitting, getting caught under my chair's wheels and stuff. But for other cases, like traveling, coils are certainly more cumbersome.
I'm taking a break from making a Splatoon avatar render to watch this because DankPods is more important than Blender 3:18 freakish ears on a stand mentioned ‼️
I have been using these daily for long time now, best money I have spent on headphones. They are supremely comfortable around my ears, incredibly well built. But I don't like the sound of them without at least EQ'ing the low mids. The sonic qualities of the drivers make it so that they take EQing extremely well and can effectively be made to sound exactly how you want them to, and you can push the bass, if you so desire, to levels you would not think possible on dynamic drivers without distortion. They're meant for studio work but honestly, I use them for anything at all, gaming included, and I am not wanting for anything else. They are around £300 but honestly, if I did not know that and were told by someone they're £1000, I would believe them.
Considering I've run a HD600 out of a gameboy color just to prove a point multiple times, we really need you to stop talking about the whole ohm myth, it's actually making life hard for people in audio servers lmao
Thay's interesting. I haven't done much research on the subject, but isn't the point that an underpowered source can't get loud enough on the whole frequency spectrum? It will get loud enough to perceive the same volume, but the sound will be all over the place? I don't imagine you could notice a difference in audio quality from a game boy, to be honest. Idk though, worth looking into
the fact that in this video the six huh dohs are the lower tier headphones puts in perspective just how goog the audio actually is ngl its actually so crisp
I'm actually one of the few people who like coiled cables for headphones! I sit at my desk and if the cable was any longer (not coiled), they'd touch the floor and my chair would roll over it and break the cable (or my PC's/DAC's headphone jack!) over time. With the coils, it's the perfect length for sitting at the desk while still having a bit of maneuverability. I've been using my ATH-M50x's for quite a while, and I'm happy with them. I'm not a fan of bluetooth headphones cuz when the batteries inevitably die they'll be wired anyway.
Hey Wade! You need to review a set of Lime Audio Terra. That's the set of IEM that were hand made in Poland (Piwo-land) and sounds stunning. It is a thousand Euros but hands down beat stuff that is three times the price (I think it sounds better than their flagship anima which is more than 3k euros). You have incredibly sparkly and intoxicating highs combined with the most volumetrically thick, deep and detailed bass (stuff with the details that you usually can only get with nice speakers) that I have ever heard in an IEM. I know a few people in the custom IEM industry in taiwan such as w audio and aure, and they all admit defeat to the terra and went "we ain't competing with them in that price" Not sponsored, just a huge fan. Please give them a try! It's life changing for me.
Hearing him actually say "Hi-X65" instead of "hurr durr six hunjoes" like I'm so used to was truly whiplash. For a second I had to check if this was a parody channel that just did a bad job of emulating his usual humor oh, "removable cabeleh" good, this is the correct timeline.
The Hi-X65 are also fantastic in another way: they're serviceable to an extent. The top cushion is just there with a piece of velco that you could just tear off if it got damaged or started to deteriorate. The ear cups aren't as removable, but the replacement kit does give you the tools needed to remove them.
Wade, I have a suggestion for a video: Aviation headsets. Those things require really big amounts of power to drive (they’re really quiet out of a computer) and the mic’s not all that sensitive outside of the airplane. Would love to see some David Clarks or Bose A20 ANC headsets on the channel!
Heya, random grub here, I love coily cables because they don't get all up under my office chair wheels, they don't get tangled up, and I can get up and walk across the room when I need to! They're also fun to play with when you're sitting there thinking about things. I've been using a Sennheiser Pro coiled cable for about a decade now, and it recently got a break in it somewhere. I've been trying to find a good quality replacement but its actual difficult!!
huge recommend for the yellow foam tips for the shures, they look like a stupid weird foam cylinder but they block out so much sound and imo they sound better than silicone tips. also bc u squish them down and then they expand to fill your ear like actual foam earplugs ive never had one come loose
We really need an Ultraphones comparison with the ears on a stand and the music, but Wade yelling in the background so we can compare the noise cancelling.
Forget him yelling, he could just play the drums for the extreme test, like he did for ANC stuff and the GK Ultraphones.
fuck yes. I've always wanted to get a pair, but I've also almost never seen them reviewed

What is "event production" ?

I'm just waiting for the day when I finally decide to get X65s and live with them forever, do they have a store in person to test listen?
Ive been recommending five basic types of headgear by situation and environment in the city: pocketable audio (usually earbuds) for light carry commuting, open back wired for static position apartment media consumption, closed back wireless for workplace/productivity and if traveling with something bigger than a laptop bag, sleeping earplugs/earmuffs, and straight up cheap hearing protection earmuffs to use with earbuds outside (ANC sometimes aint good enough for walking by nyc construction)
Closed back overear wired is always a weird consideration vs anc wireless overears
@0:35 not smasmug? They got to him oh no!
IEMs are a good cheap substitute for headphones, you can pay as little as 20 bucks and get some really good audio equipment in return
I'm still using my salnotes zero from 2 years back and it's still great!

As an Austrian I have heard of Austrian Audio before, but never cared to research who they are and what they are about. Seeing this now all of a sudden really makes me happy, as so many productions and companies have moved away over the years for the exact reason of cost, even here in my hometown…
This just gave me some hope and I really wish more people were like you and actually cared about where their stuff actually comes from.
Thanks again for another great video!
I love the sound of the Hi-X65, but the hinges are both held together by tape on mine after two years of use, that plastic casing around them is just kinda brittle :/
Yeah these things feel indestructible at first with a lot of metal on the bands but then they just give out anyways from the parts that aren't lol
Funny enough, my favorite pair of in-ear buds that I've ever owned were a recommendation from this very channel! KBears, I forget which model sadly, but they were like, a few bucks, came in their own little egg bag, and they work amazingly~!
Your thoughts on headphones are very useful! Yeah man
Thanks to your original patreon video on the X65s I bought them for video editing, music composing, and listening in general. And while the boa constrictor cable can be a hazard and in hot weather my cheeks sweat mad, I do adore them. They are easily the best headphones I own and they always blow my mind. When I get the chance I will buy a mic off Austrian Audio thanks to you!
Shout out to the KB Ear dirtybuds you’ve mentioned in older videos, using them right now!
Strange to think im listening to that drum audio from AKG to AKG as a few videos ago when some other headphones i had went bust i got the K52s and they're great so far and for extra convenience they just so happened to use the same earcup size i was using on my other headphones so its just a straight upgrade. Thanks mate, continue making amazing content
I just have to confess that I literally cannot call the HD600s anything but the hurrdurrsixhundos because of this channel, you have ruined my vocabulary, thank you very much
Decided to buy Hi-X65 right after finishing the video. Should arrive today. Excited to see what they are about.

My comfort Aussie man.
2:59 mate, that's like 3 years. That's not "for ages", that's almost brand new.
Right ? At this price I’d expect these headphones to last at least 10 years with the earmuffs being the only thing needing to be replaced
@@Drek492 I got 19 years out of a pair of headphones that cost around $1k today (but I bought them in the country of manufacture so about $370).
Also have a pair of MDRV700's that I still use daily, they're over 20 years old now as well.
For anything electronic 6 months can be ages tbh
If you use headphones daily, and I mean DAILY for HOURS, some stuff can start to fall apart already. Just think about shoes. Or shirts. Or brush heads for electric toothbrushes (please change them more frequently than every 3 years though).
@@Metaldad87 Not really, a device that lasts 6 years is what I'd call a scam. I've been using the same iphone for about 6 years, and in general I expect a computer to be useful for 10 years (I'm writing this on a laptop from 2014).
its awesome how when the headphones are really close in quailty, my ears dont need to adjust
but when theyre different, it takes me a second to like adjust to the quality every time it switches
I see Wade’s post, I watch Wade’s post
I'm rocking the SE215! It's trashed by some in the audiophile forums which isn't totally wrong in terms of sound quality, but the others who understands the true purpose of these will recognize the durability, seal and comfort of them. Rocking them at work 5 hours a day. When you're on a noisy environment, trust me sound quality matters way less than noise isolation.
seen alot of reports of the plastic cracking on the x65's. so buyer beware. build quality might be great

WHOA DANK PODS UPLOAD
I feel inadequate watching this on Bose QC 25’s
2:06 I dunno man, sounds kinda mid, just like my phone's speaker
I am a person who loves the coil-y cables. I like to be able to move about my office area without the hassle of the cable bunching up by my feet when I'm sitting, getting caught under my chair's wheels and stuff. But for other cases, like traveling, coils are certainly more cumbersome.
I'm taking a break from making a Splatoon avatar render to watch this because DankPods is more important than Blender
3:18 freakish ears on a stand mentioned ‼️
Idk though, worth looking into
the fact that in this video the six huh dohs are the lower tier headphones puts in perspective just how goog the audio actually is
ngl its actually so crisp
I'm actually one of the few people who like coiled cables for headphones! I sit at my desk and if the cable was any longer (not coiled), they'd touch the floor and my chair would roll over it and break the cable (or my PC's/DAC's headphone jack!) over time. With the coils, it's the perfect length for sitting at the desk while still having a bit of maneuverability.
I've been using my ATH-M50x's for quite a while, and I'm happy with them. I'm not a fan of bluetooth headphones cuz when the batteries inevitably die they'll be wired anyway.
I agree! Love a coiled cable for desk use
It makes me so happy hearing you talk about Austrian made stuff in such a positive way. I don't know why, but that just feels good as an Austrian.

I know a few people in the custom IEM industry in taiwan such as w audio and aure, and they all admit defeat to the terra and went "we ain't competing with them in that price"

The Hi-X65 are also fantastic in another way: they're serviceable to an extent. The top cushion is just there with a piece of velco that you could just tear off if it got damaged or started to deteriorate.

Wade, I have a suggestion for a video: Aviation headsets. Those things require really big amounts of power to drive (they’re really quiet out of a computer) and the mic’s not all that sensitive outside of the airplane.

Heya, random grub here, I love coily cables because they don't get all up under my office chair wheels, they don't get tangled up, and I can get up and walk across the room when I need to! They're also fun to play with when you're sitting there thinking about things.
