This movie is so honest, yet has so much heart and humor. The characters and families I related to most were Helen and Julie, from when I was a teen girl with a single mom, as well as Kevin with his anxiety, and now as an adult, to all of the women in the film. Which family/ characters/ situations from the movie do you relate to most???

It's a combo of all for me... i want to explain more, but it's like one or more from each family and parts of individuals... a cluster of human personalities and situations... good/bad... i relate to this.

Dianne Wiest is definitely the star of the movie, and still very attrractive, with Steve Martin excellent too, but with this cast and Ron Howard as director, this movie was guaranteed to be great, should have been a far bigger hit than it was

The grandma's rollercoaster story has always been one of my ALL-TIME favorite scenes in this movie. Becuase her story gives us an important reminder that life is LITERALLY a rollercoaster. Just like being on a rollercoaster, there's going to be a lot of ups (Successes and achievements) and downs (failures) in life. And over time, it ramps up a lot of mixed emotions and feelings. There's people out there that want to live through that type of exciting, adventurous life. And there are others that don't want to go through that and they'd rather go on the merry-go-round and live a quiet, normal, perfect life. 🤗😊😊🙏💖❤

    Fun factoids:
Not everyone recognized Joaquin Phoenix in this movie because at the time he was using the name Leaf Phoenix.
The opening song, "I Love to See You Smile" was written about Mary Steenburgen, who plays Steve Martin's wife.

I am so glad you reacted to this movie. Great reaction! It has been one of my favorite movies since it came out in the theater. Incidentally, several years later, after becoming a mystery writer, I was at a writing festival and met and became friends with Harley Jane Kozak, who played Rick Moranis's wife, and later became a mystery author. We spent about thirty minutes quoting scenes from the movie. It was so great! I still have the autographed Headshot she brought for me the following day. 🙂

This movie should be must watch for young families. It still resonates. I saw it in high school with my parents. We talked about it afterward and they loved it although my dad said it was too real at times. Years later after I’ve raised a family he’s absolutely right.

There was a TV series on NBC called Parenthood for a few years, it was based on this movie. It had Craig T. Nelson, Dax Shepard, Peter Krause, Lauren Graham, and others. The names were changed (like Adam Braverman instead of Gil Buchman) and sometimes the ages of the kids were changed...like Peter Krause played the "Gil" character and his middle daughter (Taylor in the movie) was aged up to being a teenager in the show and his oldest kid having teen issues while in high-school. His son, the "Kevin" character was diagnosed with Aspergers in the show which I thought was an interesting evolution of the storyline. Rewatching the movie now, Kevin really seems to be on the spectrum, but in 1989 so much less was known about children with developmental challenges like ADHD, Autism, and Aspergers so attention deficit, high tension, and anxiety disorders were used to diagnose them sometimes.
Anyway all the characters in the movie appear in the show in some form, sometimes it takes a while to figure out who some are, others it's pretty easy. And it's really interesting to see how they expand and modernize their storylines.
I saw this movie in the theater in 1989. I loved it!
The movie was a respectable box office and critical success which is saying something for 1989. 1989 was the most remarkable movie summer in the history of Blockbuster summers. There may have been years that had more big movies in them throughout the entire year, there may have been summers with a bigger block buster...but there has never been a summer with more blockbusters, more sequels, more cult classics, more iconic films all jammed together like in the summer of 1989!
These are the movies that came out that summer:
    Tim Burton's Batman
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
    Roadhouse
    Dead Poets Society
    Ghostbusters II
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
    The Karate Kid, Part III
    Lethal Weapon 2
    License To Kill
    Friday the 13th, Part VIII
    Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
    When Harry Met Sally
    Uncle Buck
    Parenthood
    UHF
    Weekend At Bernie's
    Millennium
    Casualties Of War
(If you're keeping track, that's 3 movies with Rick Moranis, it was his summer as well)
Not all of these movies were winners of course (though more were than weren't), but the point is they were all either big movies that had hype behind them or movies that were released and then became iconic or cult classics in one way or another. A summer season now (or pre 2020) things start gearing up in May (or end of April recently) and then 4th of July week is the last or close to the last hurrah for the big movie releases.
In 1989, from the beginning of May all the way to Labor Day weekend it was a new movie (or movies) to see every single weekend, and it was either a movie that we'd been looking forward to for a while or a movie we came away saying "Wow, that was good!" (or both).
I was 14 years old that summer. I went swimming at the community pool most days, I stayed over my grandma's a lot, I went to the beach on a few days vacation with my parents several times, I was up all night many nights playing Nintendo games and watching videos rented from Blockbuster...and still I managed to see every movie on that list above in the theater that summer except for Roadhouse and Friday the 13th, Part VIII. Ghostbusters II and Batman I saw twice.
It was one of the best summers ever!
    Best Regards!

Welcome to the family, Angel. Here's some family secrets to help you navigate the Buckman Clan.
A popular game that the cast was playing behind the scenes was a game called "Murderer" where somebody was supposed to be "killing" the other members of the cast with a particular glare and everybody had to guess who the killer was. The dinner scene with everybody sitting at the table shows you everybody playing as people's eyes are shifting back and forth.
This film features 4 Academy Award winners: Mary Steenburgen (Karen), Dianne Wiest (Helen), Joaquin Phoenix (Garry) and Jason Robards (Frank) and 2 Academy Award nominees: Tom Hulce (Larry) and screenwriter Lowell Ganz.
Despite being set in St Louis, filming was done in Central and North Florida with Kevin's birthday party filmed at the mystery fun house in Orlando.
The movie is based on the parenting experiences of director Ron Howard, producer Brian Grazer and screenwriters Lowell Gantz and Babaloo Mandel. The film was eventually adapted into two television shows both named Parenthood, one in 1990 which only lasted 12 episodes and the more famous adaptation done in 2010, that ran until 2015.
Some other actors that were considered for the role of Gil besides Steve Martin include: Dan Aykroyd, Michael Keaton, Robin Williams, Tom Hanks, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Tom Selleck, Billy Crystal and Tim Allen. Jeff Goldblum was also offered both the roles of Gil and Larry but passed on the project entirely.
Martha Plimpton, who plays Julie was wearing a wig throughout the production as she had just finished shooting a movie called Silence Like Glass (1989) in which she played a cancer patient and was bald. Later when she shaves the sides of her head into a mohawk, the top of her head was an extension that was always kept with in place with hats while the sides are her natural hairline. Also while Martha plays Joaquin Phoenix's older sister in the film, in real life, Plimpton dated his older brother, River Phoenix for 5 years and remained close friends with him until his death in 93.
The incident with the photo mix up was inspired by a real life event that happened to producer Brian Grazer. Oh, how times have changed LOL.
Despite being a father of four in the film, Steve Martin didn't actually have his first child until 2012 at the age of 67 and while his performance was lauded as Gil, there was initial concerns that Martin was miscast due to being almost 10 years older than the character who was supposed to be 35.
Howie D from the Backstreet Boys was a teenage extra in the movie, he's in the first row of students in the classroom when Nathan comes in and sings The Carpenters "close to you" to Susan.
Joaquin Phoenix (Garry) was going by the name Leaf Phoenix early in his career before changing it back. He wanted a nature-related name like his siblings (River, Rain and Summer) and liked raking leaves, hence his nickname at the time.
The little redhead girl grinning from ear to ear in the audience when the play falls apart is Bryce Dallas Howard in her feature film debut.
The videotape that Helen finds in Gary's room is an actual adult film but it's real title is Blonde Goddess from 1982, the clip was actually the first scene which is supposed to be a parody of Indiana Jones as she rescues a jungle Jane from a tribe and I remember she then goes and... I realize that I've said too much. Moving on.
As for your question as to best relates to me in the film, the answer is quite a few. As a kid growing up, obviously I had some Garry moments and ironically as I got a little older I was more of a Tod, especially when I had to be a positive male influence to my younger cousins along with the hijinks and that conversation about deadbeat dads hit close to home. There were times in my early twenties when I was definitely becoming a Gil until thankfully one day I learned to pull my head out of my ass and listen to Grandma and enjoy the roller coaster and I think that's kind of where I'm at right now in life. This movie is a slice of life and I don't think anyone ever stays one character as we get older. It's inevitable that you kind of evolve into one or the other and looking back, you can at least think of somebody in your family who's a Larry, a Helen or a Frank. I also have a Cool in one of my cousin's kids. But that's part of the journey, that roller coaster where it'll make you feel a thousand different feelings and you're wondering the whole time whether or not you're even on the right ride or have any reason to be on it but I think it's good to have a little chaos here and there, especially if it forces you to kind of look not yourself and see what kind a person you want to be.. man, this got deep.
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk, until next time Angel 🖤

Other facts: the college dean in Gil's fantasies about Kevin is played by Ron Howard's dad, the late Rance Howard. The other father on the baseball field with Gil is played by Ron's brother Clint.
Correction: Lowell Ganz and his writing pal Marc "Babaloo" Mandel were both Oscar nominated for writing "Splash".

What a pleasant surprise! I've been hoping to find someone react to this movie. Movies were a special part of growing up for me and my family. I saw this with my entire family in the theater and so it's very special to me. I am commenting before I even watch your reaction and I'm sure I'll have so much to say. There will be a lot of emotional moments for me as I'm dealing with a lot of loss in my life at the moment. I really do hope your channel continues to grow Angel as you seem to react to a lot of movies that other channels ignore. I mean I've seen enough reactions to Star Wars and LotR to last a life time at this point lol. Hope you're having a happy holidays to you and everyone out there. If you're not that's fine too. People shouldn't feel pressured to be happy this time of year.

Hi Angel, think we need to change the channel to Angel tears up... great reaction from you and Boo... and what a fantastic discussion section... Trivia - During filming, the cast became obsessed with playing the murder game (a game in which one person, who is the murderer, has to find a subtle way to kill other players simply by looking at them without giving themselves away as the murder). This is very apparent in the dinner scene where everyone is sitting around the table. If you watch everyone's eye movements, it's obvious they are playing the game.

Oh my gosh, Adam, YES. I'm actually ashamed I didn't even mention Steve Martin in that. He's one of my favorite parts of the movie. I sing the "Dentist!" song so often. 😂🤍 Great choice for a favorite role of his, and I LOVE that you love that movie! ❤️
I'm glad you mentioned Punchout again. I'm about to go check to see if I still do have it in my storage. I have to get a new part for my NES (but it's apparently really cheap and the part that has to be replaced in them all of the time)...it got to the point where no amount of tapping the console or dusting it would fix it. I then need to figure out a way to stream my screen with the game on it. Do a live stream of Punchout and other games. 😄
And I'm not sure what they were playing but I thought it looked familiar too and said something about it in the unedited version. Lol!
Also, it's my pleasure to be company for you while you ate your sandwich, Adam. See you for the next video!

Jason Robards (the dad) has been in a ton of movies over the years. Since you mention having seen whatever you recognize him from a bunch of times I wonder if it's from the Metallica video for the song One. It features clips from his movie Johnny Got His Gun.

    • @AngelGroves
      @AngelGroves  Год назад +1

Oh nice! That would have been even cooler if that's what I knew him from. I, sadly, haven't seen a lot of Metallica music videos. Though, I do love their music. I searched him on IMDB just now bc I was so curious, and I think it's from the tv miniseries Heidi from 1993 (that was released on VHS). I know I watched it a lot and apparently he was the Grandpa. Also, Enemy of the State from '98, which I actually did watch a lot when it first came out/when I was 9. I can't remember a thing about it now really, but I know I loved it then for some reason. Haha. Thanks for rhe info, Kenton!
