Helen Shaw (Grandma) had a really fascinating career - she was born in Michigan in 1897 (ironically, a few months after Grover Cleveland left office), originally studied medicine, and was actually present for the unsealing of the tomb of King Tut in 1923. She served as a writing coach for 30 years, then became a professional actress in her early 80s. She was 92 when she made this film, which was her last one chronologically. She lived to be 100 years old before passing away in September of 1997.

I actually saw this in the theater. Such a funny, charming film! It’s crazy seeing how young Joaquin Phoenix is in this.

Wow, I didn't realize Garry was Joaquin Phoenix! I knew he looked familiar and I briefly wondered if he'd kept acting and I'd seen him anywhere else, but it never crossed my mind that he'd be someone as prolific and well-known.

As a kid seeing this movie when it came out I knew it was special and I related to the kids with the single mom and now, as a parent I totally relate to all of it. Grandma is so right, life is a roller coaster. Might as well enjoy the ride!

This is def one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time. Just probably one of the realest movies about family- really loved your reaction too! 😂

  • @BigGator5
    @BigGator5 Год назад +7

"You know, when I was nineteen, Grandpa took me on a roller coaster."
    "Oh?"
"Up, down, up, down. Oh, what a ride!"
    "What a great story."
"I always wanted to go again. You know, it was just so interesting to me that a ride could make me so frightened, so scared, so sick, so excited, and so thrilled all together! Some didn't like it. They went on the merry-go-round. That just goes around. Nothing. I like the roller coaster. You get more out of it."
Fun Fact: In this film, Steve Martin plays the father of several children. In reality, Steve Martin did not become a parent until he was 67 years old, in 2012.
Historical Fact: When Grandma (Helen Shaw) inhales the helium balloon and says that when she was born, Grover Cleveland was President. Shaw was born on July 25, 1897, just four months and three weeks after the end of Cleveland's second term.
Playing Games Fact: During filming, the cast became obsessed with playing the murder game (a game in which one person, who is the murderer, has to find a subtle way to kill other players simply by looking at them without giving themselves away as the murder). This is very apparent in the dinner scene where everyone is sitting around the table. If you watch everyone's eye movements, it's obvious they are playing the game.

Glad you enjoyed the movie man! Fun Fact: that was a real sticker I put in my mouth. They didn't have any kind of prop or edible sticker, so I had to take the real thing and put it in my mouth, haha.

The sneaking of the food in the closet - I’ve always read it as husband doesn’t allow junk food in the house, so she has to sneak it in in a shoebox in the closet. And yes, I can see it from the point of view of a slope towards an ED.
Steve Martin movies to watch - The Three Amigos, Father of the Bride 1 & 2.
    Great channel!!!!

You can grow up with horrible parents and you can turn out to be an amazing person. You can be the best parent in the world and your kids can turn out to be terrible people. In the end who a child grows up to be is not really something the parents can control.

Info: Dianne Wiest is also Brad Pitt's favorite actress. And mine also.
I think Justin was my favorite character.
I quote him all the time.
    "Help help help!"
"That's my kid brother. Your uncle. Don't give him any money."
    "I won't."

A couple really good Steve Martin movies are Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with Michael Caine and Roxanne... with Darryl Hannah and Shelly Duvall.
A good goofy Steve Martin movie is The Man With Two Brains.
A good (in my opinion) movie with Steve Martin is The Big Year... with Jack Black and Owen Wilson.

Great reaction. Please react to the movie “Roxanne” written by and starring Steve Martin. It’s based on the French play Cyrano de Bergerac. As in the play Steve Martin has a very large nose. He falls for a pretty astronomer who has moved into town named Roxanne.
