Build your own furniture, a dream of many but a reality for few. In this video I show you how I make farm tables. This is one made for a customer for a new house. It's 10 feet long and made from red oak, sawn from a dead standing tree. The base is made from spruce and yellow pine. It is constructed with mortise and tenon joints, using a hollow chisel mortiser and a tenon jig I made for the table saw. Хобби
Hey! I know this is one of your older videos, but I want you to know that I've been watching your stuff for years! You really helped inspire me to start my own channel, and this video (and I'm not sure the other one where you replaced your old one with a new one) specifically pushed me to get the Porter Cable planer a few years back. Thanks for all you've done! Excited to see more videos from you!
Good balance at 1:41. I do the same thing some times :) Great job on that table man. Looks like you just made something that will be a part of a lot of family memories.
Jay Bates Thanks Jay, the customer told me that here children (grown) where talking about who was going to get the table, I think that's a compliment.
Great video. Personally I like the customers wall, looks like it's made from recycled lumber too :))
scott franks The boards come from a local barn that was taken down. It was a cool wall. The outside of the house looked like a big red barn.
I liked the wide shots of the workshop. Always interesting to see someone's workspace.
Matthias Wandel While small and usually messy, I do enjoy spending time in it. Thanks for watching.
The Homestead Craftsman I'm glad it looked that way. I like seeing that it used and not as just a filming studio.
Chris Elliott Dark, dirty and cold!
+Chris Elliot
Chris Elliott ..
"There goes the customer's horse"...very nice. Great project. I like that these walk-through's are informative and thorough.
Jake B Thanks for watching Jake
That is gorgeous but what I love about your channel and work is the simplicity of your approach and also the collection of tools: cheap every day stuff mixed with industrial quality and then hawking the work around to finish it or glue it again with very basic paints and varnishes. The result is absolutely first class. Respect all round for you from UK
I enjoyed the little blooper at the end. It is good to know that even those I learn from have difficulties like me sometimes. I think your system for making tables is a good mixture of tradition and modern methods, saving some time while also maintaining a traditional look.
I would definitely appreciate a full "How To" video for a farm table! Your videos are my favorite woodworking videos to watch on RUclips. Thanks Craftsman!
York9x19 Well thank you very much.
Your circular saw reminds me of the one my Dad gave me; he bought it in 1960 (Craftsman) to build the house I was raised in. I ran a camp in 1988-89 and did so much that Dad gave me that saw - I love your projects !
Shame you vanished. Coming back to watch this video for probably the 5th time. Always looked forward to new build vids from you. Hope you're well.
It really is that finish and distressing that really makes it look so cool. That turned out great.
I remember watching this when it first hit youtube.. just watched it again, you've come far pilgrim.
I love how all the RUclips woodworkers have their own style and different approaches for making their projects. Been watching most of your vids the last few days. All I can say is keep up the great work.
***** Indeed, thanks for watching.
Its so nice to see a real craftsman doing his work. Gives me hope for this country. That was nicely constructed...better than most items I've seen at RH or the other high end places.
Slap Stick This countries got a lot good too. Bad stuff stands out because of consequences, good stuff often goes unnoticed. For example being able to peacefully sit here on a Sunday and reply to your comment without worry. My computer which was made as a result of an incredible system, the internet, RUclips, etc. Our country is great and we should be very thankful for it. It offers huge opportunity to those who seek it. Of course it has it's problems, it's too big not to. I realize you where not trying to harp on that too much, but I reply to comments not only for the person that I am replying to, but also others that read it as well. Thank you for watching and commenting. Both me and the customer were very happy with the table.
I love the amount of detail and how you explain what your are doing. I have an idea for your workshop. You need space. Buy some winches and make some elevators that you can lower up and down with some of the equipment or various storage items in your workshop. Then when your done you can just hoist it up. Like a versa lift. Your work is supernatural!
I like the idea, but it sounds like a good way to get squashed. I'm in a different shop now, check out some of my newer videos.
This was inspirational. You are helping me to get over my fear and reluctance of mortise and tenon joints. Thanks for sharing!
That table was awesome. Great video. I look forward to seeing your next video.
Thanks for sharing
Roy
Roy Wrenn Thanks Roy, working on the next video now.
I've been watching your videos recently because my wife has put in a request for a farmhouse table! I really enjoy the look of yours! Thanks for sharing with us!
Peter Brown Your welcome peter, If you make one I'd love to see a picture, It would be nice to show it in a video if you don't mind. Good luck with your project.
I'm picturing this gorgeous table encased in a huge block of polished, clear epoxy :)
You'd need a tanker full of West System for that one, Peter!
John Heisz This is an interesting comment......it feels like an inside joke. Thanks for watching John.
The Homestead Craftsman Peter has made some really interesting things from other things cast in epoxy. I loved that table, by the way and the photos at the end of the video really showed it off well - very nicely done!
The Homestead Craftsman
Thanks! I don't do videos of these "grown up projects" but I'll certainly send you some pictures! :) Cheers!
I hope you never stop making videos! Excellent format and final product!
Wow, I don't know if I've ever seen a Sears circular saw. But, I do remember using the Sears catalog to show my parents what I wanted Santa to bring me for Christmas. I love your work, your work ethic and your channel. You are truly an inspiration!
It's a nice saw, triggers a little funny and on occasion it gives you a little buzz.....I'm waiting for the day it really lights me up.
Thank you for sharing all your videos. Beautiful work!
Beautiful table as all your work I've seen so far!
let me first say as usual a beautiful build . if there's any way you could do a how to video that would be absolutely great of course I'm referring to this particular table in this video. as always please keep putting your stuff out I really enjoy the way you explain what you do and I and I enjoy watching your builds.
The watered-down black paint on the top really looks nice. Can't wait to try that out.
Ben Brinkley Sure does, it's a simple solution. Just start out with tinting it lightly and working your way darker. Best thing to do is do sample boards trying different techniques. I also do the same thing sometimes with brown with red or orange to add a little more punch to the wood if I think it needs it. It's a very cheap way to make your own dyes and stains. But it's not the answer for everything, but for something like these farm tables it's perfect.
Always in detailed how to videos. You are on to something very good here! Thx for posting.
I agree! the color was really nice. If I ever find the time, definitely would like to make something similar and probably take 3 or 4 times longer hahaha.
Thank you for this video, I like woodworking alot and I started to make my own project last year and all the trick I've gotten from RUclips and people like you because in my place there is no schools for woodworking and no one from my family was a woodworker, so I really appreciate what you did
Impressive table! I watch a lot of farmhouse table builds, and no one does it the same. Yours seems very simple and effective. Nice job!
The table looks stunning. Love the table setting the customer placed on top. Awesome video, nice and clear and good audio. A project well done.
+Lee Fuller I delivered it to them right before Christmas, last year. While I was attaching the top she was decorating it!, she was pretty excited. Thanks for watching.
Nice video... I've been building custom cabinetry and furniture pieces for nearly 20 yrs and as a wood pro I can appreciate you talents.
Thank you.
Very nice table! Thank you for filming.
Thanks
Wonderful work! Wide boards are the best!
Matthew Cremona Thanks, the wider boards look better and are less work as far as jointing.
Very nice and a good insight in making the table. It gives inspiration for my own projects. Thanks!
That's a great looking table and the design fits so well in the customer's home. Fine job!
Monte Hyler Thank you, I and the customer both where very happy with how it turned out. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful table and craftsmanship!
wow..... so beautiful..... I am jealous of all your tools..... lol..... I know I am a woman but I am pretty crafty.... I have had some kitchen island a few small furniture that I build on my own..... awesome table. Loved it.
My tools have been a long term collection. This is an older video and I've gotten a lot more since, but again, I collected them over time....plus they all help me make money, so the cost almost doesn't matter. In reality, I lose money not buying certain tools from a time point of view. Just set your sites on a certain tool and keep your eyes open. Some tools are best to buy new while others are good to get used. More specifically some tools are not worth waiting for to find used when you factor in the usefulness and cost. Here's a table build I just posted last week. ruclips.net/video/FrK9ValzlE8/видео.html
Rustic beauty! Really liked the little bench to match. Thanks for sharing.
Melody Capehart Medina Thank you Melody, I was also very happy with it, along with the customer. While difficult to move around, I enjoy making the larger tables.............and not just because they have a bigger price tag! Thanks for watching.
Great Job on the Beautiful table!! Good idea on the little block fasting the tabletop down. Tks & keep the videos coming!!
Gary Heflin Thanks Gary
Love this table look! Good work
Just beautiful great job and amazing craftsmanship
Thanks for sharing. If love to see a how to video of making a table like this. Love your channel. Keep up the great work. I really appreciate it.
first video I have ever seen of yours.. you got my subscription
Kevin Johnson Thanks Kevin. Feel free to share my video and channel with those who would like it.
Camera angles from the wood's perspective are cool...
+Nick Fotopoulos Thanks
Awesome work! Great craftsmanship. Thanks for the inspiring video.
Beautiful job, goes great in that house; rustic but elegant. I just watched this as a followup to your video of winching poplar logs up a bank. Great job with a simple shop. I'll have to watch more.
+timberjack Thanks, If you watch some of my newer videos you'll see I'm putting together a new shop. Other than the obvious bonuses, it will be better for filming so I'm going to start doing more instructional where I really show how to do different things.
great job brother God Bless!!! The laborer is worthy of the reward!
This is great work! You block house is a good view too!
Great video and great job on the table!! Definitely looking forward to a detailed build video.
Thanks for sharing!
Jeff Jump Thanks, I'll probably space it out a while, but I'm thinking I will do a "How to build a farm table" video also. I might also do plans for it........maybe. Thanks again.
Great looking table n nice indoor decor
It really blends into your customers home with their other furniture. I should imagine they are delighted with it.
I did my apprenticeship 50 years ago and one thing that was not allowed, was to fix into end grain and I never do it now but times change.
Thanks for the video
Thanks, not sure exactly what you mean about "fix into end grain" The battens underneath maybe? If so, that's just how I was making them at the time for speed and cost. Now I glue all my tops up with a clamping rack I made. Using my track saw also makes me be able to joint my boards easily in my small shop. Thanks for watching.
I meant the battens but this is not a criticism only a comment. I have a high regard for your work.
Good job. Thanks for sharing it to youtube. Happy New Year!
Thanks, you as well.
Sweet build. Great job.
You do beautiful work. I am learning a lot from your work. Thanks for your sharing.
Good job man ! . this is what I call simple and beautiful
Very work! Enjoyed the detail and craftsmanship. Nice Talble
That is an absolute stunning table, you have inspired me to go out into my shop and give it ago I’m going to try to find some reclaimed wood and make something on a much smaller scale for the first time.
Just love the style and the woodwright shop
Very cool video, thanks for sharing.
A magnificent Table . Filming and Lighting very nice also. And the Editing Time that was spent to Produce The Finished Product.
MrUlfang Thank you, I enjoyed filming it, although the lighting is pretty rough in some of the video, but nice in others, as long as I'm outside it looks good, and some interior shots by the window are nice too. But thank you for your kind words, it was my most involved video so far and I'm very pleased with the response it is getting.
Nice job, very inspirational, I would love to learn this skill.
GREAT VIDEO. Post more long and detailed videos like this.
I appreciate how detailed your videos are. You name the store or places you get your material. And explain the methods you use. It's very helpful. Thank you! Great table!
Mario Duckett Thanks
Very very nice job, congratulations!
Lovely job well done. Going to be making two smaller tables for a restaurant close to where I live over here on the north east coast, England.
Gorgeous table, beautifully made!
Thank you for sharing the process of making it, I plan to contact you in the near future to commission a smaller version.
That table looks great. I love the simple design of the farmhouse table.

originalvalleykid Thanks, I enjoy the whole process very much, the making and filming.
Nice video from idea to the new home. Thanks for sharing it all.
+Bruce Sims Thanks Bruce
Beautiful!
Excellent work, as usual. Thanks for sharing.
tiredoldwhiteman Your welcome, I like your youtube name, pretty funny.
There are some things you did that I'm not a big fan of, but even with those little details I'd be more than pleased if that table was in my dining room. You definitely have a style in making these tables. That style with your quality in work makes a beautiful product. Well done!
Jerron Clark For these tables, they are exactly what they need to be for the style, price range and customer expectations. When Making my own "personal projects" I often do things completely different in both technique and style. Not to say there's anything wrong with it, but once again, it's about achieving a look while meeting a certain price.
The table looks really great 😃👌👌👏👏👏👏
You are clearly blessed. Good job!
Wonderful table!
Definitely appreciate you sharing the build. Really like the table. Customer wanting gaps in the top made your job a lot easier. Nice and amusing camera shots. Sturdy camera to make it through that planer (haha). Looked very nice in the customers house (thanks for showing that). Glad you didn't break your shop door glass or you would have needed" more wood to warm it up more" (pun).
MRrwmac They did not specifically want gaps, it's just the way I make the tables. It was a pretty involved video, but I'm happy with the way it turned out.
Nice table. I like your style of video. Thanks for posting.
Your welcome
Amazing job. I have just found your page. I am trying to watch as much as I can. I am in the process of building my own farm house table. Getting a lot of ideas from your process. Thanks
Thanks, I have plans as well if you need some extra help. www.thehomesteadcraftsman.com/p/plans.html
Beautiful.
I noticed your craftsman circular saw (what we call skillsaw). Have one identical which is many many years old, probably older than you are. Great saw!
Beautiful table. Great job.
a really great video. and you make it look so easy. good work man!
Truly stunning work. Thank you for documenting your art for us all. -J
John Mason-Hill Thanks, glad you like it.
HC, I would be conflicted about being in the shop or on that beautiful river in my kayak. Beautifully done table as usual, you have the artistic touch for sure!
Thank you.
Incredible table and wow what a compliment to a nice home!
travisrhaley Thank you.
Great work!
Just found you here on RUclips. Love the vibe of your channel and the detailed work you put into that table. Well done. You just got a new subscriber today.
The Coleman Farm Thank you, glad you like the videos.
Love the ricochet sound effects at 9:45.
Awesome. I have made a few myself. Farm tables are my favorite builds.
They work for me!
Great video I have enjoyed being a subscriber always nice to see your projects come to life. I am glad to hear others have snapped drywall screws. I moved to star bit deck screws after experiencing this and I have yet to be disappointed by them. Keep it up man!
+Ethan Ramirez Cool, thanks.
Great video. I have enjoyed them all.
