It's because a lot of people do not realize that Lang Lang (and whoever his PR people are) single-handedly sparked a transformation in the dying classical music world of venues full of old, sleeping people; no more than 10 years from their deathbeds. If you walk into a performance in the U.S. by almost any well known pianist nowadays, you will finally see young people again. Other people are also imitating his lively attitude (i.e. Yuja Wang... though some may disagree) and that's really good!
Sorry for being so late, but I have to speak of Lang Lang. He is an excellent performer of Liszt. If we take a quick dive into Liszt’s pieces and personality, firstly, we’d see the markings in the score. “con [awesomeness]” - He was a virtuous pianist who did whatever to show people that his pieces were virtuous alongside. Lang Lang is perfectly fit for this role
Lang Lang absolutely hones in on exactly what needed improvement.... I could even hear n see the brooding Ludwig sitting up and being the powerhouse evident in the music while Lang Lang demonstrated.
In one measure this man can make me hear what I've never heard and I've been listening and hearing pianists in this Sonata over 45 years . The passage before that descending c minor arpeggios is full of meaning ad life 8b his hands and the significance of the Eb. This man matters as much as music itself . He reminds us . Urtext must live in the now, be communicated . Every phrase is part of something!
It is all in the details. Each note in many cases has it's own identity and treatment within a phrase. If you find yourself playing a bar and _not doing much_ you've probably missed a lot. This detail is related to facial micro-expressions which occur for tiny fractions of a second. Watch Charles Boyer & Hedy Lamar in _Algiers_ for a _tour de force_ in this. The movements are so minute that they are virtually invisible w/VHS quality. But they are responsible for he screen magic.
Lang Lang is a PopStar of the Classical Music!! He revolutionised the classical music with lots of different styles. techniques and flair!! Lots of fun too. It’s a joy to watch him interact with his students in Master Class!! 💚🎋😇⭐️🎵
it’s really easy to criticize Lang Lang because of his over-the-top expressions when he performs. All things aside, he is one of the best players of the last 30 years.
i feel the same ..at first i admit his expressions when playing detracted from his skills, but after reading about him and his life, I had a more opened mind when i listened to him again and the result was that I now think he is magnificent
All I can say is.. before you criticize the girl for playing, try to play it yourself. Easy to talk, difficult to procure an rendition worthy of "perfection". This is a very very difficult sonata. Her tempo is even, her idea is there. She is learning how to shape the music, give her a break! Sure her neck is not in the ideal position, but neither was Glenn Gould's. Let people play their stuff their way, be it Lang Lang or Yu-Ja. Every pianist plays certain things better than others, and Lang Lang's superb at interpreting in his unique way. They put up this video for the public benefit to learn, so please, lets not shame them for their courage to share what is obviously a masterclass. Good job young lady for your effort, I am sure your Waldstein is much better now 6 years later!
true that ! masterclass is the best opportunity to learn. it's because she is not playing at her best which is why she needs master class(to improve) so what's all this criticism abt ? she's making an effort to learn and besides Beethoven is extremely challenging !...starting from his 8th sonata onwards

She's young and this sonata is extremely difficult perhaps to difficult for her. True is that these are masterclasses - and these are to teach her to shape the form and slightly modify her idea. And that's what LL is doing. He doesn't teach technique.
Lang Lang is in great demand because he's an outstanding pianist n expressive performer. I like his interpretations (emphasis added) of the master pieces he plays. Of course, there are many others who are just as good with different interpretations. Mozart, Beethoven, et al, would approve his advancing their fantastic music. The kids are nonetheless gifted.
die Genialität von Lang Lang hält meinen Atem an, sein Urteil über das arme Mädchen ist bereits gefallen, bevor sie anzufangen wagt. und es ist grandios vernichtend. Er ist genial.
Beethovens Waldstein Sonata is extremely difficult both musically and technically.Claudio Arrau once canceled his performance and played another piece instead since the pianos action was too stiff to accommodate the right handed octave glissandos in the last movement.Lang Langs comments are those of a real master.
WHAT SN EXCELLENT TEACHER LANG LANG IS. JUST DO AS HE ADVISES/ SAYS, AND YOU WILL PLAY THE PIANO LIKE A,PROFESSIONAL, EVEN IF THAT'S NOT YOUR INTENTION, TO PLAY PROFRSSIONLLY. I WOSH THAT I HAD HAD A TEACHER LIKE THAT WHEN I WAS LEARNING.
Lang Lang is a great teacher. He is trying to teach her to relax and put her feelings into the pieces that she plays so that the music becomes alive. Not just blindly play according to the notes. It would have been very boring and simply dead.
Lang Lang has always been a man of enormous pianist talent but I never saw more humility demonstrated than when he agreed to be coached by Barenboim in the latter's masterclass on the Appassionata Sonata. They had just finished recording the Tchaikovsky Concerto No 1. I don't know many 1st-tier pianist who would agree to do that.
Omg, I mean I am a totally beginner, started 2 months ago....I cannot even picture myself playing this but i probably in some years I could give a try. Amazing..really amazing
It's the outlook of her music, not just the posture. Her music lived and died at the finger tips, each note is almost separate from each other. while LL's music feels like a string instrument, it's connected and fills the hall.
OUCH! I feel for Lang Lang here. I don't know if even a masterclass from Artur Schnabel could help this girl. She bangs out the Waldstein like she is playing the Prokofiev Toccata.
This is how masterclasses are though as well as other festivals where adjudicator gives feedback immediately. This isn't even bad some teachers rip you apart and humiliate you infront of everyone and ask everyone in the audience why you even play piano and that you're the worst things they've heard in their life. This is probably one of the better experiences for these kids.

@matt74055 no, that's not it. To play an instrument well, one must have discipline. Talent helps, but hard work is #1. Asians just have more pressures and inclination to succeed and not screw around.
I'm sure people want to see her face rather than seeing a person burying their face into the keys. If you keep your head up while you are playing, then you will be able to get the point of the music across much easier to the audience because the emotions that you feel in the music are translated on to your facial expressions. there should be something like a hospital curtain in front of the piano. kind of the way Sia does it. that way, people can just focus on the music much easier.
Well, in terms of concert performance, I don't think that seeing the pianist playing would make the music any less enjoyable than it already is, in my opinion. In fact, being able to see the person playing makes the music seem more unique and fresh each and every time that it is played by a different person. Don't get me wrong, though.
